I had a rare, full day off and wanted to visit a brewery. I took my query to Facebook, "Where should I go?" And among the many great ideas, someone mentioned Pizza Boy in Harrisburg.
It sounded like some kind of gimmick. A pizza place that brewed some beer? But I trusted the person who suggested it implicitly and like I said, I had the whole day, so I made the trek.
It took about 2hrs up the Pa Turnpike. While it was easy with the GPS, when I arrived on scene, things were a little cloudy. Pizza Boy is located within a business area in a pizza place called Als. I don't recall seeing Pizza Boy written on any sign on the facade but I assumed I was in the right place.
I was. There's nothing fancy about the interior. A huge beer keg area on one side and a pizza oven on the other. It has numerous tables and a long bar. It's not a sit down , get waited on type place. You order your food and/or beer and they'll bring it to your table.
I'll mention the food briefly because it's not the draw of the place. Merely the sustenance needed to continue drinking more beer. In lieu of a menu, they just give you their takeout menu. One that might be sent to your house. It's standard pizza place fare; pizza, hoagies (although this is Sub country...where is the Sub/Hoagie line drawn?), salads, etc. I had a slice of cheese and I found it above average.
I thought of giving the place 4 stars because the food is just alright, but then I realized, it's a 5 star beer place that offers pizza.
The beer. It's a bit overwhelming to sit at the bar, look at the endless row of taps, and see the changing beer screen of at least 80 options , 40 of them brewed on site! That wasn't a typo. They are brewing about 40 beers on premises , from sours to IPAs, hard sodas to stouts. As well as a great selection of local beers and some stellar beers from out of state.
No matter what you have the taste for, Pizza Boy can provide. I tried a cream ale, for old times sake and their Coffee Stout "Sunny Side Up" which was out of this world. In fact, I'm sipping from a growler of it as I write this review.
The bartender, I believe his name was Josh, was really knowledgable about beers and asks the right questions to get you the right beer, which is good considering they don't do samples (probably because greedy people took advantage.)
In fact, I perused their electronic beer board and mentally decided to try the Sunny as my second beer. After a few questions, I was impressed that Josh suggested I try the Sunny as my second beer. They know their shit.
Overall, while its far away and there are many other breweries to try out, I'd go back to Pizza Boy in a heartbeat. I'll also be looking for their wares to hit local taprooms in the Philly area. I got a tip to check out Uptown Beer Garden this summer. This place definitely surpasses it's seemingly gimmicky name.
