London’s Best Listed Building Restaurants Are Quirky and Historic | Eater London

"For a slice of history, head to this handsome Victorian former dairy in Bloomsbury, where Peter Boizot opened his second restaurant in 1967. It may not have the blue plaque of his 1965 Wardour Street debut but, as keen students of the ailing chain will know, it was the first to feature the now distinctive Pizza Express “look” by Italian designer Enzo Apicella. Note the chequerwork marble floor, stained glass and exterior brick cartouches. Order classically here: Fiorentina, Veneziana, La Reine." - Hilary Armstrong

SO NICE!! I came here on a school trip but it was so fun :)) the food was so nice, and there was a really nice waiter who was spinning the tray on one hand. Very impressive, give him a raise rn !! Anyway look at this pic I took :))

If they take 20 min to bring a pizza to your table it should not be called Express. The pasta was cold and we needed to ask them to warm it ☹️ other 10 min of wait The place's atmosphere is nice for kids

We walked in here around 6pm and got seated right away. Nice homey feeling. Service very friendly and quick. Food was delicious - might be that we were super jet-lagged and starving, but everything hit the right spot! They have options to make a split pizza with any flavours on the menu, so you can share with someone else. I would highly recommend, especially with kids.

Great pizza and a nice atmosphere inside. Service a bit slow at times but otherwise a good pizza express restaurant

We had to dash in for dinner on Wednesday evening before my friend had to get a train. We asked the manager beforehand if we could be in and out in 40 minutes, and after a talk with the chefs, he so kindly sat us down and made sure we got our food as soon as possible! The waiter was also fantastic and speedy with friendly service. Great pizza as always. Thank you Pedro and Xina (apologies if spellings are wrong!) Will definitely be going again! :)

The manager was so nice, the food was so nice, however the service was the worst ever. I went to many pizza express and the service was ok, except this one! The waiter (Asteet) was very rude. We asked for a tap water and took them so long to bring it. We asked for drinks and they didn’t bring them.

If I could of left a zero star I would have done. Probably the worse Pizza Express I have ever been too. The takeaway pizza and cheesy garlic bread was awful. The pizza was so burnt and underneath the pizza was just black where it was burnt so much. The garlic bread was the same just thrown together and chucked in a box. I had a bad feeling when I walked in. The staff were rude, miserable and just lacked customer service. The pizza ended up in the bin. Anybody that reads this review and were thinking of going to this restaurant I would literally avoid like the plague!

We had such a lovely evening on a relatively full Friday night. Our waiter Xina was absolutely fabulous providing light hearted fun and great service throughout our meal. Which made me and my mum laugh. the food was also amazing especially The mozzarella sticks which were beautifully crispy. Obviously the pizza was good, but the service was truly made by the incredible staff. Especially Xina.

Yelp
Slow, inattentive service. Conveniently located (we were here mainly for its convenient location). Standard pizza fares like other Pizza Express's. Nothing to write home about. We were expecting faster more efficient service. We waited forever to get the waiter's attention to place our order and to get the bill (check). I do recommend their pizza shaped like a donut (empty in the middle where they put salad). Delicious and unique.

Yelp
Great pizza! Express is really express! With less then an hour before the NFL game we ordered two pizzas, beer, and water. All great and great service! Suggestions- Carbonara. Moose Out

Yelp
We were in such dire need of food after getting off the Eurostar and checking in our hotel that we needed to eat somewhere close ASAP! Pizza Express was only a couple of doors down from our hotel and We hoped that the "express" part of their name means we're going to get our food fast. As it was after 2 pm, there were only a few tables occupied in the entire place. We got seated right away, and ordered as soon as we finished looking at the menu. The hubby ordered the American Pizza and I ordered their Pollo Pesto with a small salad. For drinks, the hubby had a bottle of Peroni and I had an Aperol Spritzer. Both were very refreshing! The hubby was not impressed with the pizza. He said it wasn't very flavorful and with the thin crust, he was still hungry after having the whole thing. I had to supplement his lunch with my pasta. My pesto pasta was good and very filling, especially with slices of chicken breast on top. Service was good, as the place was almost empty, and the restaurant offers gluten-free options if that is your thing. We did not go back there again during our stay in London. Their pizza disappointed the hubby and we're not much for chain restaurants. And if you're really hungry when you dine here, order an appetizer before having your pizza or, better yet, order a pasta instead to appease your hunger.

Yelp
We thought it was just a another pizza place, we were absolutely wrong! The flavor combination danced on your tongue! The flavors were layered so with every bite you tasted something new! BRAVO! We ate the Calabrese pizza (a signature) and the Pollo salad and shared the very smooth Merlot! We highly recommend this place. Our waiter Eddie was fantastic!

Yelp
This place looks fancy but really isn't. I got the sloppy giuseppe. The crust was good but the toppings did not taste fresh. So for the amount, your paying does not much for the quality and honestly, you could get the same quality pizza for less by just going to Dominos. I probably would not come here if you are craving really good pizza.

Yelp
You would have to be very convincing to get me to eat any type of Italian food even if it's as basic as pizza. This was a very pleasant surprise as I'm used to just seeing very oily and boring pizza. I ordered the build your own pizza romana with lite sauce and cheese and smoked ham. It was excellent! It was thin and not too crispy and was not greasy at all. I especially liked the ham. Will definitely visit whether we feel like getting Italian again.

Yelp
Walked in here on a Wednesday evening, visiting from brussels on a business trip. Very busy place! Ideal for a quick (relatively expensive) bite. I wouldn't come here for a romantic night out. Pizza was ok. Flavours were perfect but the dough was too wet to make it the perfect pizza. What really made it a nice experience was the staff. I went to eat alone so I had plenty of time to watch the staff... and they all seemed so happy with a lot of attention to the clients, despite the place being very crowded. Well done pizza express and compliments to your staff!

Yelp
I love Pizza Express. I don't care how chainy or expense they may be, I LOVE them. It's kinda like going out for a nice meal but it's pizza! I have to say the English to pizza joints right. I love pizza but it doesn't feel like a treat when it is a bunch of rowdy frat boys. So instead the have flowers in vases & jazz! Hooray! I was always super broke when I was in London but as simple as it is, Pizza Express was almost always my choice for a splurge.

Yelp
I've been to THIS Pizza Express before? Who knew??? I used to go to the one on Baker Street near Dorsett Square a lot. I've always liked the pizza and the salads are good. The Americano is sauce, cheese and peperoni. It can be sort of tough to get peperoni "right" overseas. The US over-spiced and salty version is what I like. On this point Pizza Express does a fantastic job. Their crust is pretty good too.

Yelp
The pizza express is right across from the British library. The Pizza was nothing to brag about. Service was extremely slow. Took 20 minutes for the waiter to stop by our table to take our drinks and 40 minutes for our food to come. The place was packed and it looked the only one waiter was working.

Yelp
Even though I'm not a huge Pizza Express fan, I find myself here every couple of months as it's near work, and we get a discount. There's nothing really to differentiate this branch from the others, but the service is consistently fine. I've never had anyone go above and beyond - but never given them the reason to, either. The one time I had a complaint they dealt with it fine, and they are always pleasant enough. No reason to avoid if you're wanting pizza!

Yelp
Just had lunch here and forgot to take a photo stupidly but it was really weird today. I normally am a big fan of pizza express but today the staff were slow and a bit rude. Maybe just having an off day but has anyone else had a similar experience here??

Yelp
Pizza Express... oh how I love you. Returning from a long day trip to Paris, a friend and I made the walk from St. Pancreas International Station back to our hotel on Gower Street. Starving and tired we came across Pizza Express and it was like seeing an oasis in the middle of the desert. We decided to stop in for a quick bite because we assumed, from the name, that it was sort of a fast food type pizza chain. It was definitely nothing like a Pizza Hut. We walked in and were greeted by a friendly young hostess and seated at a table in the center of the restaurant. We ordered a couple of beers from our waiter while we poured over the menu. My friend decided on the American Hot with jalapenos and I went with the Sloppy Giuseppe which was a pizza topped with hot spiced beef, green peppers and onions. It reminded me of a Sloppy Joe in a good way. The crust was thin but not too crispy and way too big for one person -- but I managed OK. I didn't get the opportunity to check out some of the other things on the menu -- salads, pasta, the Romana or Leggera pizzas -- but next time I'm in London, I will. I wish we had Pizza Express in Houston.

Yelp
So we all know Pizza Express is a chain and that the menus are a constant throughout, so although I can tell you my pizzas and starters were tasty (if slightly undercooked on one) and my drink delicious, I will rate this on the staff and facilities. The staff were quick, smiled when speaking to me, knew their menu and gave great advice, and lastly were fast in delivering the bill upon asking. Clean tables and cutlery as well. Can anyone ask for anything more in a chain?

Yelp
Honestly, I'm not so much a Pizza Express fan (see my other review of the Highgate location), but the service here puts it over the edge. It may have been because the place was pretty empty, it may be because this is a tourist-heavy location so the staff is trained to be extra nice... whatever it is, it was good enough for me to seriously consider coming back here. A friend and I were looking for a place with WiFi where we could plug in our computers and do work. Pizza Express had plenty of tables so we decided to try going there. Unfortunately, we couldn't get a table by an outlet (but the staff would have let us move if we were still there when one opened up), but the staff was extremely accommodating. We decided to share a pizza - half a topping I like, half a topping she likes - and the waiter had the kitchen cut it in half and put it on two separate plates for us. They also let us take over two tables: one for our food and one for us to actually sit at and do work. They never seemed put out by us sitting there a bit without eating, nor did they make us feel unwelcome. Although the food isn't the best, the quality of the service here (and free WiFi, yay!) almost guarantees that I'll return if I'm in the neighborhood, hungry and needing to get work done.

Yelp
I once sat down to eat at this branch of Pizza Express and I must admit that I love the decor of this place. The food is also great as always. This branch is in a great location. The only issue I have with this branch is that even when it was just a few people (less than 10 seated) the service took a really long time and we had to keep chasing things up with the staff to get our orders sorted out. Please get this sorted out but other than that the place is great and so is the food.

Yelp
I loved the pizza and the restaurants look. The only bad thing I have to say about it is expensive. But setting that aside, I loved it.

Yelp
I was here last night with a few friends to catch up over dinner. I often like Pizza Express places; they're often reliably the same (like any good chain) and usually have a decent atmosphere. However, this particular restaurant isn't great; the food I ordered was OK, but nothing special and, like all Pizza Express restaurants, they provide you with blunt knives to cut pizza with. The atmosphere, though, was a bit of a pain - for some reason sound really carries there and I found it hard to have a quiet conversation with my friends. Sadly Pizza Express have become a cliche and their saving grace is that they take tastelondon cards, so you get much better value for money.

Yelp
Today I spent a long leisurely lunch here catching up with a group of friends that I hadn't seen for a while. The service was wonderful and the food is consistently good. I always have a good meal at Pizza Express - whichever branch I visit - but this particular branch does seem to excel at offering really friendly service which makes the experience even better. I love the dolcetti - a bite sized dessert with the beverage of your choice. Great way to end a meal without overeating.

Yelp
I LOVE PIZZA EXPRESS! I kid you not, if I could have one of these right around the corner from where I live and afford to come here at least once a week for the rest of my life, I would be a very happy girl. I stumbled upon Pizza Express right after service at St. Paul's. I was with a group, and we were hungry and looking for something filling but reasonably quick. Now, I had researched gluten free food around London weeks before coming, and Pizza Express never came up in any of my searches. But a girl in my group said she could have sworn she saw a sign on the window about having food that was gluten free. I was skeptic, but when we crossed the street, I saw the sign on the window she had been talking about, so we decided to give it a try. Once inside, we were all impressed by the cool, modern look of the restaurant. The staff was friendly, and the prices were really reasonable for London. All of the portions were huge, but it was wonderful! We were all starving, so there were no complaints when pizzas came out bigger than our heads. For gluten free options, I was surprised that they didn't have pastas, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise because the gluten free cheese pizza I ordered was the best I've had anywhere -- all around the US, and in any of the countries I've been to in Europe. No cardboard crust here! The crust was crunchy but not too crunchy, and soft enough that I felt like I was eating normal pizza again. It even tasted good just by itself when the cheese slipped off! Seriously, even thinking about it right now makes me so hungry. I came here at least five times during my stay in London, and each time the gluten free pizza was hot, delicious, and basically dream-worthy. I would go back to London in a heartbeat JUST for Pizza Express. You'll see this chain around every corner in the city, so you have no excuse not to go. Especially if you're gluten free, you won't regret it! Also, please note that I'm from Chicago -- a city that is pretty much obsessed with pizza -- so if I'm saying this is the best gluten free pizza I've ever had, that really says something!

Yelp
We made a reservation and they didn't have it ready for us, didn't even have our names. We got a table and then it took a lot of time for them to finally take our orders. We ordered the calamari and it was disgusting, not at all what calamari should be. It was more like shrimp. Very strange. Then we waited 40 minutes longer for our pizzas. Everyone around us got food earlier than us even though they came in after. Pizza was decent, but pizza union down the street is less money and takes 5 minutes to get. Overall a pain and stress at this place. Waiter wasn't around to ask for the bill so we had to ask another waitress. Probably won't come back to this location.

Peter ..

Yelp
Service is as cold as the pasta. Overstaffed in the afternoon, and still dont manage to deliver a warm pasta or a smile.

Yelp
Never imagined a queue for a pizzeria but even though we were there about 6pm the tail was out the door. Couples were less problem than more than 2 so we didn't need to wait for long. Had one Romano and one side salad to share but wished we'd ordered more. Tasty but lots of kids and very noisy. The best part was watching the guys form the pizza bases.

Lily P.

Yelp
Convenient location just steps away from Euston and St Pancras/King's Cross stations. The music playlist was great, the pizza was mediocre, our waiters were oh so slow. Overall, probably wouldn't return unless I was starving and/or heavily drunk. If you want better pizza in the area, walk a few blocks to Pizza Sofia.

Yelp
We all know how much everyones loves pizza express - delicious pizza (best in london from my opinion) so a must visit for all the tourists. A busy, buzzing atmoshpere indeed!
