Tribune Critic Uses Social Media to Rip Northwest Side Pizzeria’s Mask Compliance | Eater Chicago

"An Edison Park pizzeria drew sharp criticism after Tribune dining critic Nick Kindelsperger posted on Facebook and Instagram that none of the employees — including the cashier, kitchen workers or the owner — were wearing masks during his visit and that there was no sign on the door asking customers to mask. The post, which cited Chicago’s indoor-mask mandate (masks required unless actively eating or drinking) and referenced potential inspector fines of $75 to $2,500 per violation, prompted an immediate flood of phone calls to the restaurant. Owner Carlo Bertolli responded that staff were unmasked because they were eating, that he did not know the critic was there and that he would have addressed the situation if told; he called the social-media post “dumb and unprofessional” and framed it as inappropriate politicization of food writing. Others defended the restaurant and its pizza, while chefs and public-health advocates argued that enforcing masking is a basic safety issue akin to food-safety violations; some social-media comments (including criticism of the food) were later deleted. Kindelsperger, who says he eats out daily, wrote that he doesn’t see his role as “mask police” but had never seen such a flagrant disregard for the mandate and hopes the incident was isolated, and the episode has prompted broader debate about how critics should use personal social accounts to report on beat-related issues." - Aimee Levitt

We wanted to try a new pizza place and were pleasantly surprised by the portions and quality of the food! We got the Edison Park Deluxe thin crust pizza, breaded mushrooms and garlic bread. The pizza was oh-so-cheesy! And juicy! Breaded mushrooms - portion size was really good, well-cooked and seasoned well. Garlic bread - nice and light and very garlicky - yum!!! The only thing was service. She was really nice but they should staff one more person up front, we kept having to go to the counter to get her attention with no success because she was so busy helping out takeout orders and ringing them up (totally not her fault). Can someone help her please? So that people who are dining are served quickly, especially when they might also be on a time crunch to eat and go.

Google
LOVE their pizza! Their thin crust cheese tastes like every great pizza I had in the 80's that somehow other pizza places today can't seem to replicate. The nostalgic flavor will keep me coming back here. Highly recommend! Great work Pizzaboy!

I have had almost every pizza off of Harlem Avenue in the Chicagoland area. I’ve ordered from here twice in the past two weeks first pizza, buffalo chicken Detroit style, and then regular cheese, sausage and bacon Detroit style. Probably one of the best pizzas I ever had. They use very good ingredients and different cooking techniques. This place has franchise capability.

Google
Had the food delivered. I ordered deluxe and wings with boom boom sauce. Pizza was great, well contained and generous toppings. I mean it was so good, I actually want to eat at the restaurant next time, so I can eat it right away. The wing was also great, I have no idea whats in boom boom sauce but the size of the wing and flavor and top notch. Will order again or visit the store next time.

4/11 Finally got a chance to check out this place. Walked in… got punched in the face with the stench of dirty mop water. Then seen this cool looking girl behind the counter with piercings and tattoos. Too bad she didn’t want anything to do with us. We waited to be acknowledged. Crazy thing is we walked passed her and she was too busy on the phone. Then she rather make boxes and twiddle her thumbs than a wait on one table. After 15 mins we got up to leave. Having to walk passed her again she asks “oh you guys ready to order” I just responded “nope waited long enough” Would have love to try the food but I don’t think I’ll ever go in there again. We went a few doors down and got snappy dogs!! Probably the best hot dog I’ve ever had!!! The guy there was awesome!!!!!

Google
Absolutely fire. PizzaBoy doesn’t miss — perfect crust, sauce with just the right kick, and toppings that actually taste fresh (rare these days). You can tell they care about every pie that leaves the oven. The vibe is local, the staff’s legit friendly, and the food hits every single time. Whether you’re grabbing a slice or a full pie for the crew, this is Chicago pizza done right.

Google
I tried the Detroit Don first. Oh my! Delicious. My son loves the Hawaiian thin crust. My go to is thin crust pepperoni mushroom onion and black olive. Sides of sausage and peppers was killer. As was the meatball side. The wings are also top notch. I've never had anything but really, really good meals here. Never ate in, but based on the food quality and friendly staff on the phone I imagine the ambiance is also 5 star. I will need to stop in soon.

Google
The pizza here is the best pizza I've ever had! We drove 4.5 hours just to grab a couple of pizzas from the one and only PizzaBoy and let me say it was worth every mile traveled! We were greeted as soon as we walked in. The girl that took our order at the counter was very friendly. When the pizza came out to the table, it looked so delicious we couldn't wait to try it! Talking to Carlo and Cristina was an added special bonus to us. My girls were over the moon happy to meet them. We will definitely travel back just for the amazing pizza!! Thank you PizzaBoy for an amazing memorable experience!!

Yelp
This place is awesome ! We ordered take out but wow the portion size is very generous and it's one of the places in the city where you can get Detroit style pizza ! We got the "Don" Detroit style and it was delicious with the hot honey! We added the red chilli pepper on top n it's was perfect and very nice dough ! Also the portions are huge so well worth the 30 dollars for 2-3 ppl! We also tried the wings n got the mango Haberno and portions are also gigantic as well! Well worth 13 bucks for 10 wings ! The house salad is a good pairing as well. We usually go to Pauli g for Detroit style pizza but this is gonna be one of new fav places to also go as well!

Yelp
This place was 1000009/10 the service was phenomenal and the food was on point ! The made sure the food was fresh and we even stopped next door to go to the bar and they made sure to come out and tell us that our food was ready for pickup. The workers were very passionate about their job, and making sure that customers (us) were happy. Wholeheartedly recommend this place: Food 1000/10 Ambiance 1000/10 Service 1000/10 Thank you for making the start of my birthday weekend amazing.

Yelp
Pizza was okay. We just picked from the ready made slices available that day. My kids enjoyed their thin crust pizzas. I had a nonna's pie. It was very crispy and had hot honey drizzled. It's a very large space with good amount of seating. It looks like they also have a party room. The service was very good.

Yelp
We went in for pizza by the slice. My daughters loved the thin crust. I had the Detroit style. I thought it was good not great. I would give it another try but I don't think I would get the Detroit style again. Service was good. And the restaurant was clean.

Yelp
I'm not sure what happened...we loved pizza boy and ordered from here all the time. The last few times have been so disappointing. We ordered delivery this past Friday and was told it would be 45minutes to an hour...an hour and 15 minutes later we called to see where our pizza was...we were told it's on the way...we got it finally, an hour and a half after we ordered it! This has happened often when we ordered delivery. The pizza had little to no flavor, and the cheese curds are not as good as they once were... I like to spend my $ on neighborhood restaurants, but I don't know if we can order from here again. The worst was ordering the cheese curds the other night and finding fried/breaded mushrooms mixed in. My children were not happy. My husband thought it was bad cheese until I looked closely and could smell the mushroom.... Just disappointed in the decline of food quality

Yelp
I'm so glad we decided to order from here! I wasn't sure, to be honest. I don't think of Edison Park as a hotbed of great pizza, especially a place that seems like it's out to be hip and instaworthy, but that's my mistake. I wanted to try the Detroit style pizza, which I've only had once in Detroit and didn't know there were places around here that made it. We got the Sweetheat. Pineapple was a favorite pizza topping when I was little, but I haven't been as keen on it in many years; however, it worked really well on this pizza. I've never had banana peppers, but the ingredients of this pizza are a great combination. In the Detroit style version it comes with hot honey as well, but we decided to leave it out since honey isn't something I'm especially fond of and we wanted to keep the possible mess to a minimum. I'd be curious to try it sometime with the honey, though I doubt they sell it by the slice... perhaps if I order again I'll ask for the honey only on part of the pizza. We also ordered some appetizers, fried mushrooms and garlic knots. Neither were great. I think I misunderstood and thought the garlic knots had cheese in them. And the mushrooms aren't my thing but they unexpectedly came with a dusting of parmesan cheese, which my partner doesn't like, so we had to pick around that and only about half of it was eaten. Definitely would skip the garlic knots next time and possibly the mushrooms (or at least ask that they leave the garnish off). They delivered, which thrilled me since I didn't want to have to go pick it up, especially now that the time change has occurred and it gets dark at 2pm (I feel like it's time to hibernate once the sun goes down). The estimate I was given was almost two hours, which I was actually fine with since it was a Friday night and it wouldn't surprise me that they'd be busy, but it came within an hour so that was another happy surprise. If you're a pizza connoisseur or just want to try something new, Pizzaboy is worth your time.

Yelp
Great spot first time having the Italian beef pizza and celebrating a pope named from Chicago

Yelp
Excellent place to grab a slice and eat in or to grab takeout. Salads are very good. Great variety of slices to choose from and the staff is friendly and helpful.

Yelp
Had an order on Sunday 8/31 for a late lunch carryout, food quality was poor, had pizza, wings, salad and mozz sticks the kichen needs help But your cashier very nice and friendly.

Yelp
I've had really good pizza here before and then - I came in the other day and said hey you guys have sandwiches too right? The guy behind the counter said "Yeah, the BEST sandwiches!" OMG he was right. Especially...the eggplant parm we ordered. Warm, toasty in all the right places and soft in the middle, delish marinara saucey, and the eggplant (kisses fingertips - MWWUAH!) made JUST right. I'm DREAMING of that damn sandwich. I gotta go back and get more MORE MORE I tells ya! If you're reading this and going to Pizzaboy, you better get one and mangia mangia!

Yelp
Dropped by for some thin crust slices and couldn't have been more surprised by the quality. Nice crunch, saltiness, good chew from the cheese. The thin crust is a must and the only thing I would be returning for. The deep dish I found to be too heavy and you're just eating the bread. Garlic knots had good flavor, but once again, too much bread. Stick with the thin crust and you'll be rewarded with the perfect ratio of crust to topping and a satisfying crunch.

Yelp
My daughter and I are HUGE fans of Smothered! We had to stop and eat at Pizzaboy when we were visiting Chicago on 3/4/25. The pizza was delicious and the garlic knots were amazing. Carlo came out and said hi. We were speechless and so excited to meet him. The entire experience was so much fun. We were smothered at Pizzaboy.

Yelp
Their pizza is solid, but the crust is so thin that a grown man can eat a large on his own. But that's not why i'm leaving a review...They should start calling their meatballs "breadcrumb balls". The consistency is dense mush; and i can't taste or feel any ground meat. Pizza: B Salads: C Meatballs: D Wings: A+
google avatar

Yelp
The pizza was good. Typical crispy crust pizza with pretty decent ingredients. I personally didn't enjoy the waffle fries with cheese and marinara sauce. Their version of loaded fries. The wings were actually very good. I highly recommend them. The only thing I can complain about was the price. 2 pies, wings and side order of fries was $90. Not the best pricing but understandable in the location.

Yelp
I tried Pizzaboy's thin crust for the first time this week and I was pleasantly surprised by the generous amount of sauce and red peppers. I only eat plant based food so I requested no cheese. Other restaurants are skimpy with the sauce. I tried the Detroit style the week before and I liked the toppings and the generous amount of sauce but the crust is not as good as Jett's unfortunately because the crunchy part around the edges was too hard and rubbery. I will definitely go back for the thin crust. Call me crazy but I like green peppers mushrooms and pineapple. They threw in the red peppers as a pleasant surprise for some reason. The servers were very friendly and polite for my two pick up orders. I might take my wife there to dine in soon. It looks nice inside.

S K.

Yelp
Ordered double dough and a thin crust. Not a fan of either. Sparse toppings, couldn't find the pepperoni or mushrooms/onions, even under the cheese on either pizza. Pretty expensive for what you get.

Yelp
Never order on a Friday or Saturday night. Definitely not enough kitchen help or staff to get orders done on time. 500pm - Ordered online 550pm - Pickup time 600pm - Sorry we're just starting your order - it'll be 15 minutes". 615pm - Still waiting 630pm - Still waiting 640pm - Asked counter help to check on order. Response: "There was a cross in your order - we're making you a new pizza. It'll be a few more minutes" 641pm - Asked to cancel my order 642pm - Heading to Spuntinos ... I should never have tried something new. Definitely avoid unless they choose to staff properly. A lot of unhappy customers .... Customer service and time management needs a lot to be desired.

Yelp
This place has great pizza, including a super thin crust that is thinner than a tortilla and yet still stands up to the sauce and cheese. It's not listed on their online menu but you can see it on their sit down menu. I had one of their ready slices which was very good they had a pretty decent selection at the front and it included a good variety including a NY style, a pan option, and a Detroit style. There was so much I wanted to try, including the Panzerotti and garlic knots we'll definitely have to come back. There was plenty of street parking when we got there but it seemed to fill up pretty quickly as dinner time rolled by as there are a number of other bars and restaurants in the area. Service was very friendly!

Yelp
My husband and I came in on a Thursday recently. The waitress was so sweet and personable. The food was excellent and the pizza was a perfect thin crust- such a good crisp. We loved it :)

Brian M.

Yelp
Amazing pie and atmosphere Love this place and the people who run it Definition of community and who we should be ordering from for parities and corporate events to show them our authentic roots
google avatar

Patti O.

Yelp
Excellent and friendly service from all staff! This was our second time trying this place. The Panzerotti was a bit doughy and its contents inside could have been filled up a bit more, but other than that both entrees were very tasty. They also have a private party room in the back which seems great for a kids' bday party!
google avatar

Christina A.

Yelp
Service wasn't bad. The waitress was nice. Table was dirty. We ordered pizza and garlic knots. Wanted to try it, but don't know if I would go back unless I was in the area.

Yelp
We needed to grab a bite before going to Firewater to see a music act. We loved the fast service and the flash heating of the pizza by the slice. (Mmm!) Good value for the money--if you are a bit grease averse, dab this pizza with a few napkins. But good either way. We enjoyed the crunchy crust and great toppings and cheese! Counter service was attentive-- you can eat in or take out. Try it and you won't be dissatisfied. Trust me!
google avatar

Yelp
Pizza plus deserts are all delicious. My son especially loves the Detroit style. I love all of them and prefer the single slices they have in special each day. Also the Italian beef sandwich is soooo good

Bryan C.

Yelp
Terrible experience on Saturday. Waited 2 hours for a delivery only for it the pizza to be delivered literally ice cold. Wanted to try a new place. Stupid me. Back to Dino's I go.
google avatar

Erv S.

Yelp
First time here, but definitely going back! Ordered a thin crust and a salad for pickup - and a first for me, they called and said my order could be ready earlier than the time the ordering app gave me. Nice touch! Pizza was great, crispy and chewy! Tasty toppings - garlic, onions, pepperoni and sausage. They definitely don't skim on toppings either. One of the best thin crusts I've had in a long time. Salad was really good too - fresh and the creamy garlic dressing was great. Looking forward to exploring more of their offerings.

Yelp
We all deserve second chances! Just stopped in for a quick slice and it was so good! The lady was extremely friendly, and the overall vibe was good. I stand corrected.
google avatar

Jennifer G.

Yelp
Normally I absolutely love this place. Today, I ordered a salad with no onions and no croutons because I have a gluten allergy and they give me a salad that you can clearly tell they took the croutons off of so I couldn't eat it. Very sad.
google avatar

Yelp
st walk in you immediately hit with a fun, loving, & caring atmosphere! You'll be greeted by wonderful people in a very amazing welcome in type of vibe! When JoJo is working and she's the one that greets you and helps you with your orders you'll know what I mean! She is the best in the business from her kindness to her knowledge of the menu! But then once you get down to it! You get your food be it slices, full pizzas: NY, Detroit, or Thin Crust, this spot with Carlo's guidance and brilliance really knock it out of the park! I mean everything is made with such love, care and precision that it makes me want to take the 45 minute drive every day! Carlo has really figured it out with his ingredients and flavors! I also truly appreciate his willingness to allow customers creativity with an option to BYoP(Build Your own Pizza)! I will always recommend Pizzaboy to the people that ask me where can I go for a slice thats different! The people of Edison Park have a GEM in their midst! Hope to get a Pizzaboy 2 closer to the Southside asap!!!

Tess W.

Yelp
best pizza place around!!! I love going here with friends and family. Pizza is always cooked perfectly! Definitely recommend to people near by or stoping in town.

Yelp
8/25/22 HAPPY UPDATE information for AAdvantage Dining members: Apparently, Pizzaboy is part of the American Airlines AAdvantage® miles, and since I paid with my connected credit card, I rec'd AA points! Thanks, Pizzaboy. I LOVE that you are part of this awesome program! It was a great surprise email to receive from AA. We will definitely travel out again because this makes it even more worth the trip! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ So, maybe you've seen Smothered on TLC? I have watched it, and the restaurant owners and family are featured on the show. So, we (my cousin and I) decided to head to Edison Park and grab some food. First, great location. On the SE corner of Northwest Ave and Oliphant, great parking options, and it's just the best part of the neighborhood. (I was born just a few blocks away.) My cousin was hoping to meet Carlo and Christina, the owners. I was just happy to take the photos for Yelp! LOL We arrived around 6pm. It was actually pretty empty, but to be fair, it was a Wednesday night. Pizzaboy's menu is extensive. We placed our food order with Maeve, who was super-kind behind the counter. I informed her about my food allergies. She had to ask about the oil used, and out popped Carlo! What a very nice guy. We went over the allergies, and I was fine. I ordered their curly fries and eggplant parmesan (sans cheese). My cousin ordered the garden salad with a new york style BBQ chicken pizza. We grabbed our table. The restaurant was so clean. I notice that kind of stuff. Maeve brought out our food. The salad was huge. We could not finish it. Fresh lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and red onion. The croutons were excellent too. Then Maeve brought out us our main plates. My sandwich was thick and a generous portion. Yikes! A lot of food! The sandwich was delicious, though. The eggplant was cooked perfectly. The Italian bread used was soft yet crunchy. The curly fries were more than the two of us could eat. Think of Checker's french fries, but I think waaaaaay better. The seasoning was fantastic! My cousin enjoyed her BBQ chicken pizza, saying she would travel to get it again. She did say it was a thick pizza, too, and she could have used a bigger knife to split it in half. Not in a complaining way, but a "holy crap, this is a large piece" type of way. We capped off our dinner with fried dough. I'm not a fried dough eater, but my cousin wanted to try theirs. OMG! They were OUTSTANDING! Like crave-worthy. The portion was a lot. The dough was soft, and they were covered in powdered sugar and a chocolate sauce of some kind. I had to reassess my life and diet as someone who does not eat sweets as the norm. Just delicious. I definitely gave our visit 5 stars. Clean, great service, really good food, truly impressive. Mangia!

Yelp
By far the best pizzeria in Chicago. I'm a customer for life. Great service great food great atmosphere.

Yelp
Finding the right pizza place when you've grown up enjoying some of the best in Chicago is no easy task. Having been raised on the SouthWest Side, where the gold standard was set by legends like Obbie's and Vito and Nick's, I've got a pretty high bar when it comes to my pizza expectations. Now living on the Northwest Side, I've spent quite a bit of time searching for that perfect square that could bring back the flavors of home and I've finally found it at Pizza Boy Pizza! From the first bite, I knew my search was over. The crust (love they offer extra thin option) at Pizza Boy Pizza strikes that ideal balance of crispy tasty that I've been craving, and the sauce? Just the right amount of zest. They are generous with their toppings, all fresh and flavorful, making each pizza a hearty and satisfying experience. The atmosphere is just as inviting, with a friendly staff that makes you feel right at home. It's clear they care about their food and their customers, ensuring that each visit is as memorable as the last. For anyone on the Northwest Side longing for a taste of true Chicago pizza, or for anyone who just loves great food made with care, Pizza Boy Pizza is the spot. Trust me, it's worth the trip--this is the pizza haven I've been searching for!" Bonus - in house delivery guys are extremely professional and kind!

Yelp
We had my son's birthday here and it was a great experience! They were super flexible and helpful! Christina even made pizza set ups with the kids which was so cute. The food was amazing and the party room is so cute! Highly recommend stopping in or hosting a party. It's byob too which is great!

Yelp
AMAZING! Super quick and the pizza is delicious! The Don Detroit style slice was out of this world good. We had our two toddler boys with us so we wanted only quick things from the menu (just got slices of pizza), but already looking forward to coming back and trying other delicious sounding items from their menu.

Sal S.

Yelp
Its darn good food and awesome workers plus we love the outdoor seating in the summer months

Yelp
Pizza was delicious and the service was great. Absolutely going back and recommending to friends

Yelp
After giving it another chance, I went there in person with the family. While we made sure just to get the extra thin, it was actually really good. The pizza sauce had some great flavor. I also liked the boneless wings and cheese curds. The garlic knots are still not great. I will say the service was pretty outstanding. They were awesome with my nephews. I'm still a little mixed on this place, but the thin pizza was pretty good. Along with the boneless wings, I could make a good pickup meal from here.

Yelp
Pizza boy has been in Edison park for a while now and this is the first time we tried it, and not because we're were not curious. My wife is a huge Detroit style fan, so we figured we give it a go. We ordered a basil and tomato Detroit and a thin crust pepperoni and green pepper so that we got a taste of both and ordered a garlic knots too. I'll start with the Detroit style, it was not good. It was a lot of dough, and I know that's its supposed to be thicker but this was different. It tasted like focaccia and had a very strong olive oil taste but it was not pleasant. The thin crust however was very good. The crust was really crispy and thin and held up to the sauce and toppings. It had good flavor and was cooked well. The garlic knots were okay. There were only 3 in an order and they were small. The taste was good, good but not worth the $5 price for me. We picked it up, but the food was hot and fresh when we got home. I would order the thin crust again, but not sure if I would give the other stuff a second chance especially with places in the area that are also pretty solid.

Amanda T.

Yelp
Had food catered by Pizzaboy himself today at my place of employment and I think everyone will agree, it was nothing short of SPECTACULAR! The Chicken Parmesan was very good with the perfect amount of spices. The sausage and peppers were tasty and a beautiful salad with all the amenities to top it off. From all of us at Norridge Ace Hardware.... THANK YOU PIZZABOY!

Yelp
We went to pizza boy last Sunday and it was the first time for my family. BBQ Boneless Wings, Garlic Knots and cheese curds to start out our lunch. For lunch main meal we had thin crust cheese pizza and a thin half sausage half pepperoni pizza. All the staters were very flavorful and well prepared. The BBQ Boneless Wings was the one that left the longest impression on all of us. Just the perfect amount of sauce and a great crunch. The cheese curds for myself was the big surprise. Little nuggets of bitesize cheese that I could not stop eating. The garlic knots while good in their own merit were to me a bit tough and overly oily. I suggest giving all of these starters a taste and you will not regret it for on moment. The pizza was the next to come out of the kitchen. This pizza was nice and crispy with a sauce the had the perfect sweetness to compliment the salty sausage and cheese. All pizzas were well prepared and a good size for my group. One regret is that I didn't get to try the Detroit style pizza that they are said to be known for making. This just means I get to go to this great restaurant again to complete the entire gastro experience.

Yelp
We just had a fantastic meal at Pizza Boy. We got several slices, arancini balls, and the fried dough for dessert. The sauce and crust/dough were perfect. The Don was our favorite. The owner Carlo and his team member JoJo were so friendly and welcoming. We highly recommend heading to Edison Park for a great meal.

Yelp
Good, solid Detroit style (aka Sicilian) pizza, with a thick, flacky crust, cut in squares. We had ours with sausage, mushrooms, and garlic, which were great choices. Service was slow to receive the pizza, but they checked in on us regularly, keeping us updated on the status. Overall it took a little over an hour for our food to be served. The dining room wasn't busy, but they had a lot of counter pickups for carry-out, so maybe they took priority? We weren't sure. Good selection of drinks in the soda fountain, and wait staff was young but very hard working, efficient, and pleasant. I took part of the pizza home and warmed it up under the broiler the next day -- delicious!

Yelp
I thought this was pretty decent pizza. It wasn't everybody's opinion in my group - but I did enjoy it. Hawaiian (don't you judge me) thin crust. Base was just right crispy/soft mixture, sauce was ok (could use juuuuuust a touch more salt - but that can be added to personal taste). Service was good. Cheerful and friendly. They have whole pizzas - some of the usual suspects and some a little more adventurous. And pizza by the slice. I am gonna go back and work my way through the menu. Summary :- I liked it... but others didn't... so I can't resoundingly recommend it. But I am going to keep going there.

That pizza was completely off the chain delicious. I was in Chicago visiting and ran across this jewel. I can't wait to go back and try some other items. Absolutely love this place!!!

Yelp
This pizza was really good and they delivered it to my hotel MUCH faster than I anticipated! All around good service and great Chicago style pizza!

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch with my mom. Place is on the corner right in the heart of Edison Park. We ate in, was a solid sit down place. Nothing to fancy. Staff was friendly. Mom had the white slice and said it was good. I have the deep fried calzone, which most places will only bake now a days. It was great! Nice and crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Will definitely be back.
