Charleston Restaurant Melfi’s Serves Pizzas Fit For a Tuxedo - Eater Carolinas

"The “aha moment” occurred at an old-school, cash-only pizzeria in Rome called Baffetto. Reitz explained that the super-thin and crispy pie was unlike anything he had ever had in the United States. “We thought that style would appeal to those that wanted the sinfulness of pizza but not the breadiness of a Neapolitan pie,” said Reitz." - Parker Milner

Google
One of the best pizza places we have been to in our trip. They offer so many options. The portion comes in a perfect size. They make them fresh right in front of you. The service is great too. I love how they serve the house wine in a clay jar. Definitely recommend!

Google
Great place for freshly prepared authentic Pizza, totally enjoyed watching the 3 cooks making pizza dough and placing toppings, a bit of waiting in line because of group of middle schoolers but definitely was worth the wait. Had vegetable pizza and salad. Thought the price was reasonable (much better than US) , waiter was prompt and helpful.

Google
It was recommended by friends who were there, and it was confirmed by locals that we just meet as a place with the best pizza and they weren’t laying. Crispy dough, fresh ingredients… the location is very nice. And if you are lucky then you will get a table fast as we (actually we were there 10 minutes before opening)… all and all a must visit place while in Rome.

Google
Really good pizza, we enjoyed it, ask for a Coca Cola but it came without ice, could be great if they serve it with Ice, not Air conditioners inside very hot seating besides of the wood oven,

Google
Really great Roman style pizza. It is super affordable and delicious. Kinda hectic to get into and the seating system is broken but worth the wait!

Google
An authentic experience of flat crispy pizza. As for authenticy- tasty - but the service as well, not so quick, not so efficient, but all in all, a good pizza night. Be prepared for some queue...

Google
This place was so busy so we were very lucky to have a seat. Heard it has some of the best pizzas in town so had to try it. And my friend was right, these pizzas are SO GOOD! Got to get the ones with an egg on top with artichoke. We had a craft of wine with the cutest cups and jug.

Eugenija Biel

Google
Waited for an hour in a queue for origonal pizza and tiramisu. Friendly and experienced waiter immediately recognized that we are asking for salami pizza, not for peperoni (which happened to be a vegetarian pepper pizza) :D

Yelp
Crazy how simple can be so much better! Don't come here expecting anything other than the traditional Roman pizza. I had the margherita and it was delicious. No frills. Super thin dough with a light layer of sauce and cheese. My partner had the salami and fungi which was also delicious. I didn't think the service was bad at all. The place is busy. Line out the door even as it started raining. So yes, you may have to wait for a table and yes, you'll wait a bit to order and be served so don't try to squeeze this place in between reservations or tours. Relax and enjoy!

Yelp
Our last night in Rome and we fell into a Pizza opera! We lined up at 6pm and were luck to have a ringside seat to the pizza magic! The mood inside is wonderful with many wait staff taking orders, bringing your wine immediately and delivering the piping hot pizza to your table. The pizza was so thin and crispy! We ordered a plain Margherita and one mushroom with sausage. Both were fantastic! If your in Roma, this is a great stop but get there early!

Yelp
This was the best pizza we had in Rome!! It's worth the wait! It was soo good we ended up going back a second time during the week we stayed in Rome. It was really cool getting to watch them make the pizzas too!! The waiters were really nice and service was quick! Highly recommend.

Yelp
An authentic family-owned pizza restaurant with delicious food. This was our first meal in Italy and did not disappoint. Lots of locals were visiting which made us feel good about the decision to make this our first stop. We watched the pizza being made while sipping on peronis (next time would go with the house wine). We can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Amazing pizza that will not disappoint! Some of the best in Rome. Great service towards non-locals and would highlight recommend sitting on the patio to enjoy the weather.

Yelp
Da Baffetto is honestly not the best pizza in Rome. I've been here twice and the first time was bad and the second was just "meh". Let's start with the staff. The owner is not exactly the most charming person in the city of Rome. I've been here twice and he is always making faces at customers and kicking people out of their tables when they haven't even finished their wine. Thank God, this second time I was sited in the outside area of the restaurants, which was GREAT because nobody was pressuring us to leave. One positive thing about Da Baffetto is that they are open pretty late compared to other restaurants and their prices are really affordable. So in a way, you are getting what you paid for. This place can get really crowded and have huge lines, so don't come here if you are starving because you might have to wait for a few minutes to get in. The second time we visited, we came here around 11PM on St. Patrick's Day and were seated really quickly.

Yelp
This review is for a pre COVID visit. What I love about Rome is that you can find many different types of pizzas to suit your mood or personal preference. The pizza at Da Baffetto is the super thin, eat with the fork kind. The place is pretty unassuming, that if you weren't looking for it you'd certainly miss it. There are also no pushy waiters standing outside convincing you to go in -- sign number one of a good place. Secondly, you'll see many locals frequent and when in Rome certainly do as the Italians do. On my multiple occasions I've only ever ordered the pizza so I can't speak to their other menu items. However, I think the pizza is what makes this place popular. It's fired in the brick oven so it comes out super quick, if there's not many other people at the restaurant. It's served piping hot in a huge pan and I do recommend you get one for yourself. They might be as big as your head but because they're so thin it's incredibly easy to eat an entire one by yourself. Don't try to pick it up with your hands since it'll fall apart pretty quickly, use a fork and nice especially if you don't want to look like a clueless tourist. The margarita pizza was incredible. The flavors fresh and authentic with a perfectly thin dough with just the right amount of charred edges for the crust. While I stayed in Rome I visited this place often and highly recommend you add it to your list!

Yelp
PIZZA FANS! OVER HERE!! Stop looking for traditional pizzerias in Rome and hurry to visit this one. Pizza here is thin and they have a good flavor variety in the menu. I recommend ordering the house's wine, mushroom pizza, pepperoni pizza, and for dessert, Nutella pizza. If you are a good-eater, order one for yourself, I did! But split the dessert. I do not recall making any reservations but we waited for 15-20 minutes, which is very reasonable for a popular place.

Yelp
Amazing food. Amazing staff. A little hole in the wall place with the lightest pizza I've ever had. I ate the whole thing, which rarely happens. What I also liked and appreciated was that they have some staff that speak languages outside of Italian and basic English (one speaks Spanish marvellously). If you want real Italian pizza that is reasonably priced and tastes amazing, go here!

Yelp
Old style authentic setting. The pizza is a bit above average. I don't recommend the house wine.

Yelp
This gem was hidden on a small street off the main road. It was much bigger than anticipated when looking from the outside. There was a dining area on the 2nd floor where lots of pictures of customers with the employees occupied the walls. The food came out in a timely matter. I ordered the pizza al salame. It contained Pomodoro, mozzarella, and hot salami. The slightly burnt thin crust was appropriate. Everything about this pizza was outstanding. The hot salami with the mozzarella along with the light Pomodoro sauce proved to be the right choice. I also tried the following pizzas that are below... Pizza With Prosciutto - This was similar to the pizza above except with the prosciutto. A solid put together pizza. Pizza with Zucchini Flowers - This contained tomato, mozzarella, and zucchini flowers. The pizza as a whole was good, but I was just not a fan of the presence of the zucchini flowers. Pizza with Mushrooms, Onions & Sausage - This was my favorite pizza I had. I am usually not a fan of mushrooms on a pizza, but I was pleased with this. It might have just been the overall combination with the onions and sausage. Will I go back? Easily.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I ate here during our first night in Italy. If I could, I would rate this as a 3.5. We enjoyed the pizza and bruschetta a lot. We contemplated on trying the margarita but we're suckers for pizza with a fried egg. The tomatoes on the bruschetta tasted really fresh and the bread it was on was delicious. However, the service wasn't the greatest. We ate at a late hour where it wasn't as busy so you would think the waiters would be more attentive. Be prepared for a line though!

Yelp
Knife and fork pizza. If you go at night be prepared for a wait ,not only for service but for your food as well. Seems to be a locals favorite. I am a thin crust guy, and this place has it for sure seemed to be almost as thin as a crepe. We tried pizza everywhere we went and everyday we were in Europe and out of the many places we tried this was better than the rest. If you like your pizza with cheese only like I do be prepared to get the stink eye from the waiter, like when people want ketchup for their steak it seemed. To me cheese pizza is the way you can really see how pizza taste at the most basic level, before the can alter or hide the flavor with all the ad ons. When I eat real bbq (the stuff only found in Texas.) I never need or want sauce. Anyway this place was pretty good. Pro tip = try and get a seat down stairs or even better outside-upstairs made me feel a bit forgotten.

Yelp
This place gets a little busy, a reservation would be best. The owner of an Italian restaurant told me, "if you can see the chefs actually making the pizza, eat there"! If you don't see anyone making your pizza, chances are it might be frozen!! Our table was right next to about 3 guys hand tossing pizza dough and cooking it in a large oven. I knew we would not be disappointed eating their pizza! I got the mushroom and cheese pizza. The pizzas are larger than the plate but the crust is thin and crunchy. They are filling, but you don't get uncomfortably stuffed! I have learned to appreciate thinner crusted pizza for this reason! Our food was great and I would definitely come back to this place!!

Maggie L.

Yelp
We got here right at opening, and we were seated right away. we couldn't believe the reviews of this place and the quality of the pizza that we had. Not really sure how to say this nicely, but it was terrible. The best part of the meal was the house white wine. The pizza dough was nonexistent, it was so thin and the parts that you can actually taste the dough were the burnt crust. the toppings were not evenly distributed amongst the pizza so you either had really salty pieces or very bland pieces. The tomato sauce was lack luster. And there was maybe one or two sausages amongst a whole pizza for the specialty pizza named after the name of the restaurant. Will not be going back.

Prestley B.

Yelp
Such a cute and quaint restaurant. You know it's going to be good when they are making the pizza right in front of you! Nice staff too.

Yelp
Best local spot, great selection of pizza! I try to come here every time I am in Rome.
google avatar

Yelp
This place was recommended to us by both locals and tourists. We came right at opening so there was no line. We ordered a large with mozzarella, prosciutto and mushrooms. It was nice to see the guys working their love into the pizza dough and to see our pizza being made. It's a very thin crust, almost cracker like and the sauce is light so it does not overpower the other flavors. Depending on how hungry you are, the large could feed 2-3 people. As others have mentioned in previous reviews, I don't think I would wait an hour to eat here. I wasn't disappointed but i wasn't wow'd either. Don't get me wrong, the pizza was good, but this place may have been overhyped for us. There are outside tables as well as tables inside, but very limited seating. Come early or like others have said, be prepared to wait.

James L.

Yelp
Outstanding pizza, maybe the best in Roma. The Service was fast and friendly. A++++++
google avatar

Janet E.

Yelp
Definitely put this on your list of places to visit. We came here several years ago and remembered it being so good that we wanted to come back. It's a quaint and super small place, service is only ok but the pizza makes up for it. Pizza is thin, delicious, authentic and inexpensive. Get here early before they open or expect to wait an hour or more. As a bonus it's right by the best gelato place, Fridgedarium.

Yelp
My husband received a recommendation to go to this pizzeria from a client and we learned a fun fact while waiting in line, that Nicolas Cage loves this restaurant as well. It is a busy and cramped corner of a classic Roman building. The pizza was decent and my husband enjoyed it, but for me it was crispy on the edges and a soggy at the middle or tips. I have found that this is common in Rome at several places. I got the plain cheese because I ate a lot of meat the past few days and wanted to keep it simple. Way too much Gorgonzola. I could smell it before the pizza was brought to our table. The wait, style of food, and price was not worth the hype to me.
google avatar

Yelp
This pizza was good but not good enough for 5 stars. Got salami pizza and Sausage mushroom onion they were both good will be trying several other places before I leave Rome.
google avatar

Giovanna B.

Yelp
Most amazing pizza I've ever had IN MY LIFE. Thin crust isn't my thing but Baffeto made me change my mind. The smell alone from the outside is intoxicating. There was a line around the corner for this place FOR A REASON! Must try!!!

Yelp
I visited this restaurant about 9 years ago with a group from college while studying abroad and thought it was the best pizza I had ever tasted in my life. I came back here today with my boyfriend on a trip to Rome and it was the worst experience ever. The staff is nasty. I'm sorry but there is no better word to describe them. We walked in with a Italian greeting and asked for a table for two. The inside is sad and grim with no music whatsoever playing. So we asked to sit outside. The lady at the front could barley make a grunt and could care less. We find a table outside. Soon a male waiter comes over to put paper down on the table and basically throws menus at us and leaves without even saying a single word. He seemed extremely annoyed that we where there. He comes back and we order two pizzas, two coke zeros, and a liter of water. He disappears without a word and just nastily looks at us. We somehow get our pizzas extremely quickly (less then 10 mins). They were fresh and hot. But no beverages. He finally brings us our cokes. But no water. We didn't even have time to ask because the literally threw the pizzas down on the table so aggressively my pizza slid half off the plate onto the table! At this point I was disappointed because I had talked so much about my previous experience a decade ago to my boyfriend and remember having such a wonderful time. We eat our pizzas. They were fine. Thin and crunchy. Much better than American pizza but I'm sure there is better pizza in Rome elsewhere. The kicker was the waiter came back retrieve our plates we asked for the bill. It was 22 euros. I was taking the money out of my wallet to pay. And looking for coins to make the correct change. The waiter had the nerve to come and speak his FIRST words to us during the experience. And say "tip for me. tip for me". Now we are American and as such are very good tippers. But let me tell you that man was not going to get a single cent out of me. When he realized I wasn't putting down more money he snatched the money off the table and picked up our glasses (I wasn't finished drinking my drink) and basically snarled at us with his nasty attitude. Tipping in Italy is not mandatory and if so 10-15% is generous and the fact that he wanted our money when he couldn't even say hello to us is laughable. We are a nice, polite couple in our late twenties, not obnoxious American teenagers. We have had some rude experiences with Roman hospitality staff but this took the cake! Don't eat here and give this rude establishment your money!!
google avatar

Marta G.

Yelp
Beautiful pizza, terrible service. The pizza is very good, but the service is so bad that it doesn't worth it. The experience in general is not very nice.
google avatar

Susan T.

Yelp
The crust is so thin it almost evaporates with each bite. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Service was a little herky-jerky. Busy place, pack your patience.

Gage G.

Yelp
Our server was very rude and seemed like he didnt want anything to do with us, it was obnoxious. Yet, the pizza was great.

Yelp
I had one request before leaving Rome: to eat traditional Roman style pizza. My Roman friend suggested Da Baffeto. I was ecstatic that my American friend's recommendation and internet search was validated by a local. I'd also like to clarify that she did not suggest this place because it is touristy, but because it is where she goes for Roman style pizza. Cracker thin and as big as a record, real pizza (not fast food pizza) from a restaurant is mainly served for dinner. Do not make the mistake of going to Da Baffetto for lunch. They will be closed. Also, it takes awhile for the wood fired ovens to heat up and boy are they hot. So hot, if you lift your pizza up to check out the crust, you will find spots of charred crust. This is normal, good, and all part of the charm. A medium versus a large pizza is not much of a difference in size. It's about a Euro difference in price. Splurge. The pizzas are personal servings and since they are so thin, you will have no problem putting it away. After all, didn't you come to Italy to eat REAL pizza? We ordered three different types of pizza- one with anchovies, one with bresaola and arugula, and one with zucchini and squash blossoms. The bresaola one also had squash blossoms on it. I found the pizza okay. I like Da Baffetto more for the ambiance. Think communal tables, long lines, and a crazy owner. He was a personality similar to that guy who serves and denies soup in the USA. The toppings on the pizza weren't evenly distributed and the sauce didn't leave much of an impression. I found it a little difficult to eat. How does one eat Roman pizza? They don't slice it for you but you do have utensils. We sort of did half and half. Sometimes tore it and ate it bit by bit, other times sliced off a triangle and folded it into something with weight on it. The food is simple at Da Baffetto. I'd definitely go to check it out. However leaving, I did ponder if it was all hype. Should I have given it four stars? This place is like going to Grimaldi's in New York City, kind of a toss up.

Shagaf S.

Yelp
The staff are ridiculously rude! Sorry, but not coming back. I have to remove the taste of the rude waiter outside who refused to seat us, why, because it is inconvenient for him.
google avatar

Olya S.

Yelp
Excellent pizza!!! I can't say best in Rome because I haven't tried them all but the best among the ones I've tried. Thin crust, lovely sauce, tasty topping. I enjoyed it so much! The place does have a line up, but it goes quickly and they have a lot of room with a second floor. Our waiter had a lot of work but he managed to keep up happy. Highly recommend! Tiramisu was tasty.
google avatar

Cynthia L.

Yelp
Looking for true Roman style pizza? This place is it and legit! For those who don't know, Roman style pizza has avery thin crust (almost cracker-like texture). They have their menu in Italian, English, French, and German - Plus. Hubs ordered the Margherita pizza and I ordered the Zucchini Flower pizza. Both were buono! Zucchini flower seems like a local fav and was def tasty (although nothing particularly strong because I couldn't quite pick its taste out form the pizza). Quick, fast, and cheap. We loved this place! *(Italian) Celebrity gawk with all the pictures covering the walls *Two people and our bill was only 18 euros...steal! *No service/sit-down fee!
google avatar

Jim G.

Yelp
Great experience and great pizza! We have eaten here multiple times and usually bring friends. They always order one pizza each and then order a second because it's so darn good. Thin wood fired perfection. You might have to share a table. The place is crazy busy. Expect to wait in a big line unless you come early.
google avatar

Juan G.

Yelp
Busy place at night. There is about an hour line outside very night I past this place. But I think you get to the front of the line if a taxi drops you off because on two occasions I saw couples get seated without waiting (to the delight of the people in line). Me? I ordered "to go". I kept it simple with a plain Margarita (cheese and tomato sauce for 6 uro) so that I can truly get there flavor. The crust had a great texture; thin, slightly crispy, and bendable. But not too much flavor on the crust itself only the char from the oven. The sauce was balanced, not too sweet and a mild tang. That was good. The cheese texture was there melted with a bit of saltiness at the start then morphed into a ricotta creamy flavor at the end. Good "take out" pizza but not an hour wait in line pizza. And remember cash only and they do not slice the pizza. The box it whole. So if you share one you will be tearing pieces off. Not a bad thing tho.
google avatar

Ifrah S.

Yelp
Very very crowded place, but to me that's a good sign; means the food is good and people are willing to wait for it. This was also a place with lots of locals so we were sure to try it out. I got the mushroom and onion pizza and a four cheese pizza. I didn't know what 4 cheeses were on the pizza, thus when I ate it there was a flavor I didn't particularly enjoy and I'm still not sure which cheese it was. Regardless the pizza was a great size and the mushroom and onion pizza tasted awesome!
google avatar

Dennie C.

Yelp
Da Baffetto is one of those places which for whatever reason has perpetual buzz about it and is highly recommended to visitors to the city, however when you go eat there you're left wondering what the big deal was about. My wife and I had the Margherita and the Napoletana and they were both good, price was fine but the service wasn't great which unfortunately happens with anyplace that predominantly services tourists. We fortunately, didn't have to wait on the long line for the restaurant because the concierge at our hotel hooked us up but we saw some people waiting 45 minutes to get seated. I would have been pretty disappointed to have to wait that long to get just decent pizza. Honestly, we've had comparable to better pizza throughout Italy from even modest mom and pop establishments. The bottom line is if you are in the area, don't see a line and want decent pizza then this is a good option but it's not something to go out of your way to get.
google avatar

Remington W.

Yelp
Pizza here was just ok. Better than most you'd get back in the US, but just average for Italy. The servers were pretty rude and unwelcoming, so that didn't help. I think this place is skippable. Def not worth a long wait for.
google avatar

Itay M.

Yelp
We waited for 50 minutes to get a table, another 30 minutes to get the pizza which is just ok. Nothing special. Also, the waiters are not nice and not welcoming at all. We really don't get what all the commotion is all about. An extremely disappointing, time wasting experience...

Matt S.

Yelp
Baffetto makes the best pizza I've ever had. My favorite is the Baffetto, which is basically pizza with everything (I never imagined that pizza with a baked egg on it would actually be a good thing). My wife's favorite is the pizza with mushrooms and arugula. You have to wait on line briefly (no reservations), but it is worth the wait (and the line generally moves quickly).
google avatar

Benny W.

Yelp
Baffetto has always been a favorite of mine. This restaurant has been open forever and as a testament of that an infinite collection of pictures on the wall with soccer players, showbiz gals, models, politicians, actors, etc. The restaurant is 3 minutes away from piazza Navona which makes it a touristy destination, however local people dine there as well. The wait stuff is rude and they will make fun of everyone, straight in your face. Despite this the pizza is good and different from other places. It's a very thin crust almost like a saltine cracker but the ingredients are fresh and after all the service is very attentive. The only drawbacks are the infinite line to get a table and the price which literally doubled from my latest visit last year. Do no expect these folks to speak any other language outer than Roman dialect! I'm an Italian myself that lives abroad for many years and they are not gonna make any effort to even speak Italian. This last time I had a 4 cheese with arugula & bresaola which was great however you might wanna order the house special "baffetto" with sausage, onions and a fresh egg in the middle. I will definitely recommend this place while you are in Rome, especially when hunting for pizza different from the square, by the weight typical Roman options.
google avatar

Xander H.

Yelp
Very mediocre pizza. It certainly wasn't even close to many of the best places we've tried in Rome, Florence, and the rest of Italy. The price is decent at €6 for the cheapest pizza, and it's not bad by American standards but for Italy this was probably at the very bottom of my pizza list. Not sure I would specifically recommend this to anyone. Also..around dinner time (especially on Saturdays) the line gets VERY long. We were in the area for the gelato place next-door and couldn't believe so many people were lining up for what I considered mediocre pizza. The staff was very unfriendly when I went before, I can't even imagine what they would be like when they're this packed!

Tiffany N.

Yelp
Best pizza in Rome! This place is a local gem that definitely cannot be missed. It's attracted people from all over the world including us travelling from Toronto. (We went there twice in the week we were in Rome!) The atmosphere is so homey, you can't help but be fascinated when you look at all the pictures on the walls through out the years and noticing the same people are still there. Food is excellent and prices are reasonable. This place is guaranteed to give you that authentic Italian experience. Their Baffetto pizza was the best thing I ever had, you need to try it.
google avatar

K V.

Yelp
This was recommend to me by a local resident. We were seated among many Italians -- not a typical tourist joint. One star for excellent pizza and no stars for service. Wait staff isn't even trying. I recommend this place for pizzas but do not expect a warm welcome.
google avatar

Mai Y.

Yelp
With so much good pizza in Italy, Da Baffeto pales in comparison. It's a tourist trap. The pizza is average at best. The portions are large and prices are cheap. There are a lot of American tourists eating here. A sign that you should avoid it at all costs. Better to find a place the locals frequent. If you're a foodie, you won't want to waste a precious meal here.
google avatar

Michelle W.

Yelp
Rude and nasty service. We rented an apartment next door and wanted to try the pizza. We ordered the largest pizza for a group of 4 and the sever told us that we have to order one each then pulled the table cover away and asked us to wait outside if we wanted take out. Ugh. So rude. Never going back. Pizza was not that great.
google avatar

Rob S.

Yelp
Simply the best pizza in Roma! Every time I'm in Rome, Baffetto's is a must! With so many choices you will know this is the spot when half the line is locals! Get there early or come a little later, but don't miss out! The table wine is perfect for the price and disappears quickly. The pizzas are the main attraction and we always get at least one with an egg cracked in the center!! Enjoy and leave stuffed and happy!! Thank you from California!!
google avatar

Juliane L.

Yelp
Well, I have had MUCH better pizza... I don't understand what's the thing with that place. Found it on a guide book and given the line outside the store, it was probably in a bunch of other guide books haha. Had a calzone and a pizza. It was okay, nothing great, staff was super rude. oh well. Save your time and money, it's easy to make and eat better "traditional" pizza anywhere else.
google avatar

Jenna E.

Yelp
Great authentic Roma pizza! In a touristy enough area and easy to communicate with, although our waiters limited English only added to the experience. Great pizza, great wine, great price. 5 euro for half a litre of house wine!
google avatar

Beasan M.

Yelp
Gross. Zero flavor. Tourist trap. Pleeeaaasssseee don't come here. Service is crap. Just trying to get tourists in and out. What a waste of carbs in my body. My husband and I 100% disliked this place. I promise you will too
google avatar

Yulia S.

Yelp
The servers were grumpy, and there seemed to be negative attitude towards tourists. I liked that pizza was super thin crust, but it seemed that the topping was underdone - the cheese was barely melted, mushrooms and onions tasted like boiled, and I could use more salt/pepper. We also ordered a salad - romaine lettuce was floating in olive oil; some tomato pieces were too salty, and some without spices at all.
