PIZZERIA MARITA – Kyoto - a MICHELIN Guide Restaurant

"A large masonry oven sits to one side of the entrance. Clad in his crisp white uniform, the owner-chef stokes the firewood as he bakes authentic Neapolitan pizzas. The extensive menu includes a full list of famous pizza types. The speciality flavour of the house is ‘Regina’. Named from the nickname of where the owner-chef apprenticed, this style is a combination of smoked mozzarella, tomato and basil. The smoky aroma of burning firewood whets the appetite." - Michelin Inspector

So lucky to be the last people in line to make it in the night we were there. The Neapolitan brick oven pizza was expertly made and delicious. Ingredients were fresh, dough was thin, yet crispy and enjoyed every bite. The owner and chef was welcoming and we learn that photos hanging in the restaurant were from his chef mentor in Italy. Tip: get there early. There is a limited number of pizzas that can be made and the chef is the only person there. Be prepared to wait in line and when the pizzas are done, they are done.

One of the best pizza I've ever tested. Don't give up. The line could be large but It will be a great experience. I recommend this place absolutely. I will go back every time I visit Kyoto.

Amazing dough! Really loved my diavola and then our desert pizza. Fantastic being able to watch the process and then enjoy delicious food. Probably the best pizza I’ve had in Japan :)

Who would have thought I would find the best-tasting pizza ever in Kyoto. It is worth queueing for and watching the chef's magnificent work. Oishii desu yo!

Possibly the best margherita I've ever had! If you have the time and are happy to wait I would recommend this place. Pizza size is good for one person so I would recommend getting 1 each. The restaurant is very cozy and if you get a seat next to the oven you get to watch him make the pizzas while you wait 🍕 We even tried to go back during our short stay in Kyoto but while waiting in line we got turned away due to him not being able to accommodate everyone. There was only one staff member (likely the owner) to take orders, serv and make the pizzas which slowed things down a lot.. He also seemed frustrated when we only wanted to order one pizza for two people.

Just perfect 👌 the dough, the sauce, the cheese, the wood fire and the skill of the pizzaiolo/owner!! Just perfection. You will not be disappointed...that is all!

Google
Best pizza in Kyoto! And the best I had around. Never fails to amaze me with food! Always consistent in taste and texture of his pizza dough. First stop whenever I get the chance to step into Kyoto! The Chef is often misunderstood as unfriendly but he’s just fastidious in his preparation and presentation of his food and restaurant. He was never once unprofessional and unfriendly towards me and my companions. Been dining there for a while and I’m a tourist.

One of the best pizzas I have ever enjoyed. Perfect crust and delicious topping. The kind that you get only in a wood fired oven. Expect basic but appropriate pizza experience straight to the point. There are approx. 15 seats. If the restaurant is full you have to wait outside. Better not to bother the owner with questions about waiting time or other stuff: Just be humble and wait until its your turn. If you follow this advice, you will have a great pizza experience. Otherwise: See some of the 1 star ratings here…

Yelp
As soon as you walk it the smell of pizza is in the area. I've seen my fair share of oven back pizza and the chef here knows what he's doing. His skills with the oven and paddle are amazing. When I went the chef was the only person working. He was cooking preparing and taking orders. Not a single guest was missed, pizza burnt or undercooked. A master of his craft. If your looking for a personal pizza in Kyoto this is the spot

Yelp
Had Pizzeria Marita and so happy I did. This is a small shop run by the person who owns it - he takes the orders, makes the meals and does everything from front to end in this cute experience. We waited around an hour before we were seated and ended up ordering: * margherita pizza - delicious and fresh this came out straight from the oven right in front of me. The crust was soft and chewy and the toppings were fresh * four cheese pizza - this was delicious and a white sauce based one - this was rich with different cheese flavors but delicious and yummy Overall, delicious food and please go support this local business!

Yelp
The best pizza I have ever had in my life! A small shop with only 12-15 seats where the chef personally invites each guest inside and sees them out. He individually prepares each pie from scratch in front of you. Each component is incredible from the buffalo mozzarella to the perfectly seasoned sauce to the quality of the olive oil to the undercarriage of the gorgeous crust.

Yelp
A man and his wife run the restaurant and there are multiple types of red and white pizzas and drinks to choose from. This place is cash only. It felt like the toppings were skimped a little but surprisingly, it was still tasty! You watch the whole process from kneading the dough, to adding the toppings, to cooking the pizza in the brick stone oven. For the service and the amount of food provided, it seemed a little over priced but it's still a good local place if you're craving pizza.

Yelp
One of the best pizzas I've had in my life! We waited for about an hour, but it was well worth it. Would iterate what others have said in their recommendations - the quattro formaggi and marinara are so good! We also got the Nutella pizza which was great for something sweet

Yelp
If you're tired of Japanese food and craving pizza, this is an easy solution that will transport you to Italy. A few things to know ahead of time: Cash only No pics or videos of the guy making pizzas. Just respect that and don't do it. Beware there are about 8 table seats and five bar seats so plan accordingly. They also have a sign saying they may close early if they run out of ingredients and sure enough, they roped off the entrance once they took us in. There's some signs that you're in a special place Little signs write about the quality of pizza in Napoli and instructions on how to eat with knife and fork. Pizzas are about 12" in diameter so easily consumable by one person. The wood fired oven is many hundreds of degrees so it only takes 2 minutes to make each pizza. Margherita - the best! Ingredients are obviously premium and homemade. The sauce is zesty tart fresh tomato. And like the Italians, toppings are sparse - like it's a privilege not an entitlement. Prosciutto Cotto E Funghi Tomato sauce, mozzarella, ham and mushroom. Although delicious, it starts to get to the point where too many flavors are competing against each other. Condor No tomato sauce, just cheese, sausage and broccoli rabe. The rabe is an interesting selection, I didn't think it paired too well, and some bites result in a.m stringy tangle. The sausage is more American/German than italian. Could have had more spice to it. Pizza dough is to die for - that and the tomato sauce are truly the highlight which is why I think the margherita was my favorite. Simple. And very very well done. That's all....

Yelp
Found this place when googling for good pizza, very safe to say that they have not only good, but extraordinary pizza. The tomato sauce is spot on and compliments the olive oil perfectly. Cheeses are nice and proportioned well across the pizza, and the toppings aren't over the top. A very authentic spot for pizza and the chef knows exactly what he is doing. One of the best pizzas I've ever eaten. Also the frittatina appetizer is great as well

Yelp
Excellent wood fired pizza. Similar to getting a Margherita pizza in Naples. Chewy tasty crust infused with San Marzano tomatoes. Great tasting Neapolitan pizza. They also have take away and reservations are encouraged. Staff has knowledge of English.

Yelp
Found this place online and it looked good, so we came by and found out it's a really small place and was completely packed! We opted to wait outside until a table opened up, and we did eventually get seated, so that was nice. The Capricciosa pizza and Funghi pizza were delish and legit. Totally worth the wait. It reminded me of the wood fired pizzas I used to have in Switzerland. I love the crispy and chewy crust. Seating is tight because the place is small. But the food is totally worth it when you want something different from Japanese food. A great find during my Japan vacation!

Yelp
One of my favorite foods is Pizza! Especially pizzas grilled in the stone-oven are awesome! I happened to find this Napoli pizza specialty when humbling around Nishiki Market. It is not located along the market, but very close to it. This rectangular-shaped tiny restaurant has no more than two or three tables and counter seats. I was able to see the pizza baked by the chef in front. A burning hot pizza arrived at me soon! Pizza was crispy and acidity of tomato sauce worked well, but something wrong or ill-balanced. Oh, dear! Gagagaga-n! This is because there was no cheese. A drink and a pizza were included in 800 yen of the lunch course that I ordered. But I was told that cheese was not contained in a pizza. Cheese sometimes causes my head ache. So I supposed that it would be OK without any cheese. However, pizza without cheese is like coffee without creap (old CM says). Besides pizza, you can order other delis such as croquette, others I forgot. An elderly male customer next to me enjoyed pizza with wine (additional fare is needed). Very chic man! I have grilled pizza several times at home, but I have no stone oven. I would like to use one to grill a pizza by myself.

Yelp
Had lunch at this great little pizzeria near Nishiki. It's limited for space with only a couple staff tending to max. 15 customers (3 tables + counter seats), but that means you get to watch each pizza being made and then baked in a large stone oven one by one right in front of you. Although i can't speak to the other items on their limited lunch menu, the margherita i had was one of the best i've had in Kyoto, perhaps Japan. Lunch pizzas come with a drink and cost 800,1000 (margherita), and up.

Yelp
I've used Yelp for years but was never a member, until now. I joined to write a positive review of this restaurant. They produce a very good quality Neapolitan pizza, better than most I tolerate in the states. If I find myself in Kyoto again I will seek this place out.
