Mile End’s Farine Shuts Down Its Ovens — and Other Closures | Eater Montreal

"Operated as a mid-range NDG pizza place, Pizzeria Melrose is the focus of its owners’ attention and is preparing to expand with a new location in the Plateau opening soon; it has generally drawn more notice than the owners’ former Mediterranean-style bistro." - Tim Forster

Hit NDG Pizzeria Melrose Plans Plateau Location on St-Laurent | Eater Montreal

"A NDG pizza favorite that opened about three years ago, Pizzeria Melrose focuses on pizza and wine and is set to expand to St-Laurent in the Plateau after tipsters spotted papered-over windows bearing Melrose’s identical logo in the space that formerly housed café-bar Laïka. The original on Sherbrooke West serves a mix of white and red pizzas—from a classic margarita to the “NDG” with white sauce, gruyere, rosemary, potato, and pancetta—offers delivery and take-out, and keeps a small number of salad and meat options among its appetizers. The Gazette critic Lesley Chesterman awarded it three stars, calling it a simple neighbourhood restaurant doing things right." - Tim Forster

Excellent restaurant and wonderful experience. We loved the Caesar salad and the fennel salad. The pizzas are amazing. Delicious thin crust, nice tomato sauce, quality ingredients. We tried the Margherita, Classique and NDG. We loved all three, but if I had to choose, the NDG was my favourite. We also shared the homemade rigatoni with sausage and rapini. Delicious! The Margaritas were amazing and paired beautifully with the salads. 😊 For dessert we had the tiramisu and Nutella pizza. The tiramisu was good, but the Nutella pizza was amazing. It even has crushed hazelnuts on top. The restaurant was busy inside and on the terrace. Even so, the service was very good. Attentive and friendly. The prices are very reasonable. Highly recommended!

My husband and I have been trying different Pizza Restaurants when ever we travel to bitter cities. Now, we have decided to try one in our neighborhood. Pizzaria Melrose has been at its current location for over 10 years. They serve neopolitain style pizza, pasta, salads, and a few desserts. This time, we were 3, so we got to try 3 different pizzas. First, we started with the Cesar salad. The lettuce was crisp. The dressing was plentiful with a lot of grated cheese on top. Four small slices of bacon were decorativly placed on top. It was very good. We then ordered a Classic pizza, a Gigi pizza, and a Three Meat pizza. The undercarriage of the Classic and Gigi were perfectly cooked and held up to lifting and folding in half. The Tree Meat one, however, was wet and had to be eaten with a fork and knife. They will, for next time, if asked, cook it longer so it won't be soggy. The toppings on all 3 pizzas were very good, making them delicious. Overall, we enjoyed the pizza and will go back. The service was great. Parking was easy considering the location. The atmosphere was noisy, but it's expected for the type of restaurant.

Google
The pizzas were gorgeous! Love that. Pizzas not fat as it happens sometimes in other places. I would like to come back next time of being in Montreal. I like the atmosphere in the restaurant and especially music. Waiters were pleasant and polite.

Google
Awesome pizza! Loved that the crust was more on the thin side. The eggplant one was my favourite (topped off with their Chili oil mix) however I enjoyed all the other pizzas we ordered. The pepperoni and margarita were good but nothing remarkable. The less generic flavour combos were the better pizzas in my opinion!

Google
Very Very expensive for what you get. An hour later we were hungry. The quality is really there ! But the quantity and the strength of the flavor, for what you pay ? It's not. Looking at the other pictures.. our pizzas were pretty empty. Almost no sauce and no cheese and one slice of meat spread around .

Google
An amazing pizzeria, a must-visit on your next pizza date night! We got lucky and were able to score a table, but heads up, make a reservation. We ordered the Melrose and Cinq formage - delicious ! Amazing and flavourful crust, delicious sauce and toppings 10/10 🍕

This is a place you’ll be back to over and over. The managers make this feeling that you’re having dinner at your buddy’s. Everything tastes authentic and delicious.

Google
Love Melrose Pizzeria! Fresh, high quality ingredients that brings up your pizza experience to another level. Where else can you find five cheese and spicy honey pizza 😋 Their veal meatballs and fennel salad is also delicious! Pablo, the owner is also an absolute star and always a pleasure to meet!

Yelp
For the most part, good. We sat on the terrasse at 5:30 on a Saturday and shared salads and pizzas (and wine). The food presentation was excellent and a few substitutions were allowed, which we appreciated very much. Pizzas are great, but maybe a little thin in the middle, weighed down by so many toppings. Nice selection of wines, with something to please everyone. We went with an Aligoté at $60 / bottle. Service was very, very attentive... perhaps overly attentive, with 3 different people checking on us, breaking up the conversation and whisking plates away that weren't entirely finished. We had to ask the servers to stop refilling our wine glasses, gave us a feeling of being rushed. And I know this is a personal pet peeve of mine, but servers please, can we stop asking diners " are we still working on this? " This question really ticks me off and makes me feel like a horse at a trough. I'm not at work, I'm trying to enjoy the meal you prepared for me at my own pace. Lastly, one of us did not enjoy the calamari... wondered if it was frozen as it had a fishy, not-fresh taste. I will say the server appreciated the feedback and removed this from the bill.

Yelp
Pizza excellente, la pâte est vieilli 72h et je pense que cela fait toute la différence, la carte des pizzas est originale. Service impeccable, les prix sont très correct au vu de la qualité de la pizza, j'y retournerai sans hésiter

Yelp
Pizza was pretty good but the long wait kind of ruined the experience. I came with 4 others here on a wednesday night. The restaurant itself is very nicely decorated and has a small terrasse. We ordered at 19:20. I got the Jos Pappo's which was a pizza with mozzarella, rapini, sopressata and garlic. One of the people with us has a seafood allergy so he notified the waiter. I was kind of in a hurry but didn't expect a long wait for pizza. Over an hour passed when we decided to inquire about our food. The waiter explained that in order to ensure there was no contamination with seafood, they passed all other tables who ordered seafood before us so they could clean their cooking area. Though precaution for allergies is very appreciated, the person with allergies told me that this has never happened before and we all found this excuse quite lame. When the food came around 20:30, we were all pretty hangry. That being said, I really enjoyed my pizza. Though pricey ($18), they used high quality ingredients and did not skimp on them. The spicy sauce on the side was also delish. Overall, I would return to this restaurant and give it a second chance given how good the pizza was. Hopefully the service will be better next time. 3.5/5

Yelp
This restaurant took Covid19 an incentive to improve their total operation. A lot of other competing pizza restaurants just gave up and closed for a few months. Before the pandemic, the restaurant was frantic, understaffed and awkward. Now they have an organized takeout setup, & deliver promptly by UberEats. Pizza crusts is always cooked correctly. Not burned, not undercooked. I wouldn't have recommended them before but I definitely recommend them fully now. Right now, there is no one better in the west end.

Yelp
I ordered the NDG pizza using Uber eats last night. It was a decent attempt at a white pizza, but could use some improvements. Their description of the pizza is "White sauce, potatoes, pancetta, mozzarella, gruyère cheese & rosemary" Reading this, I thought to myself "that sounds epic!" It should be bursting with flavour and texture. It should be rich and creamy with the salty pancetta elevating the whole thing. Unfortunately, the taste of this pie can best be described as timid and mild. The sauce and cheese are a bit bland. It's overflowing with scalopped potatoes. They ought to season them a little bit. When I think of pancetta on a pizza, I picture, the large crispy discs of salty magic that adorn the Rustica pizza (#32) at Pizzeria Napoletana in little Italy. On any given night, that pizza has the ability to make you realize that all is right in the world. The "pancetta" on the NDG pizza was essentially 3 small bacon-like strips, arranged in an unnecessary triangle in the middle of the pie. Therefore, 100% of the pizza is covered in the potatoes, sauce and cheese while about 25% is covered with the pancetta. Why can't we have good things in life? Put pancetta on the whole thing!!! Add 2 more slices, and spread them out evenly instead of creating a daycare art project with meat at the centre of the pizza. For 18$ plus tax, they shouldn't be rationing portions. This pizza didn't taste bad, but it needs some work. It comes unsliced which should be automatic for a restaurant. The crust was quite good despite a few spots where it was burnt. It could be great with a few adjustments.

Yelp
Called and they told us that they had no tables inside but that the terrace had quite a few tables open and it was first come first serve. Arrived immediately and saw 3 tables open. All of a sudden all 3 were reserved (but empty). I suspect that they didn't want us there because we had little kids with us. I prefer to dine at restaurants where people are treated fairly.

Yelp
So happy I finally got to try this place ! Super cute pizza spot on Sherbrooke, they do takeout but also have in and outdoor seating with really nice ambience & pretty airy decor. The service was on point , super friendly , knowledgeable about the menu and didn't miss a beat ! COVID measure properly in place as well. we ordered wine to start (nice selection reasonable priced per glass, really enjoyed) , Serrano ham and marmalade starter was sooo thinly sliced and delicious I'm still thinking about it ! The pizza was also really awesome. My boyfriend ordered the 3 meats pizza and I ordered the mushroom pizza (we shared them so we can try both). The dough was outstanding , it was sooo tasty and probably one of the best in town. The meat pizza was delicious and packed with flavour , the mushroom pizza was a more subtle rich flavour with white sauce and garlic/sage it was really good , if you're a mushroom lover this is a must try ! Both pizzas came with a little container of hot sauce that was super tasty. it was so hard to choose because all the pizzas sounded amazing, I'll be coming back here again & again to make my way through that menu ! I would also like to add that the pricing was reasonable and affordable 15$-18$ range per pizza.

Yelp
Beautiful place with quality food made with quality ingredients. I've heard a big buzz about the place and I can understand why.. I was very pleased with my meal and the service. Wish this establishment many years of luck

Yelp
Well where to begin. I honestly wanted this to be good. I have heard good and bad reviews about this place. We took a chance, had a party of 10 tonight. The head waiter was a straight hipster who decided that French would be the only language he decided to speak. No matter how much English I spoke to him, he insisted in answering in french. I get it, he feels entitled to it, so why not force it on your customers who are paying to eat at your restaurant, behond me. Back to the review (. I could only imagine at this point, the waiter/manager must be dying to check if I left a review, guess what, I did! I hope your reading this and your just smirking. So....he takes our order and it's off. Food comes in a bit slow, but nothing to really complain about. My Tuna entree, tasted like 4 pieces of fresh tuna, canned tuna, mayo, mixed and dumped on a plate with cucumbers and radishes. Some oil and there a branch of cilantro. Personally, I would chopped it into the mayo/crap mix. 3/10. By the way, who has tuna tartare at a pizza joint. Get the concept / menu close. Don't put things on the menu that are not relivent. Let's move on to main course.....I'm still waiting for mine. While 9 other people were eating and I was watching them like a poor homeless man downtown at the Burger King window. ( no offence ) My "N.D.G, pizza was burnt supposedly. Didn't bother telling me, make me wait. He thought I wouldn't notice. Can't blame him for trying. So when I called the young hip lad, nice jean shirt buttoned to the top by the way, over. I asked him where is my pizza....he finally spoke English and told me "shit happens". So I told him that I do not want the pizza anymore. He pulled the " but it's on the house!" OMG....thank you so much. That makes everything better. You ruined a night out. That's what you did. The best part is that the rest of the people there all had a bad taste in there mouth now about this restaurant and how mr. hipster waiter/clown acted. I hope if you own Melrose Pizza and you read this, I did not right this to be an asshole, it was a big fail tonight. Staff problems, from the kitchen burning pizzas to waiters who don't know how to act in public. A big 4/10 for me.

Yelp
Fabulous staff and hospitable. Ali was great with checking in on me all night. Frederick is a sweetheart and recommended the perfect digestif. What can I say about Eric - great visual as you sit at the bar. The pizza takes me back to my days on the Amalfi Coast of Italy. #nostalgia #summer16

Yelp
I went this venue for a birthday dinner party, the location is ok, there is not much happening around there but if you have a large group 10-20 people they have a nice room downstairs. The appetizers and the pizza was pretty good, if I am around there and I want pizza, I would go back. The cocktails though were disappointing. I wouldn't recommend them.

Elizabeth R.

Yelp
The pizza is delicious, but the salad needs a lot of work. For example, the olives tasted like they came from a can! Very disappointing. There are places in the neighbourhood where fresher ingredients can be bought...it almost seems as though some short cuts are being taken in the kitchen. There's no substitute for freshness!

Michael F.

Yelp
They make good pizza, but their menu is impossible. I take a pizza with Serrano (a mexican chili pepper). I like spicy, so I'm happy. I get my pizza - it is serrano ham. How am I supposed to guess? Also, the pizza is supposed to come with roquette. No roquette. I call, they tell me it is the fault of the driver. Tired of this restaurant. Second time I order vegetarian and get meat because they are too vague with their descriptions.

Nicholas M.

Yelp
Great pizza place! The service is equally as good as is the ambiance. If you like a great pizza and selection of wines you'll be right at home. A must especially if you live in the area. We're here several times per month.

Cary M.

Yelp
I picked up a couple of pizzas and a green salad last night at Melrose Pizza. The pizzas were excellent. However, the green salad at $8.00 is a total and complete ripoff. The lettuce in the salad comes from a pre-washed plastic bag that can be purchased at a local grocery store and there was so little of it. The salad dressing was good, but again so little of it. Not enough to coat this tiny salad. My guess is that the total cost of actual food and salad dressing in this salad is around 10 cents. Never again! Cary Miller

Yelp
Best pizza in the area for sure. Not the best I've had but definitely a good pizza close to home. Service was great, very friendly staff and our pizza came in under a half hour on a very busy night. Would come back for sure.

Mary F.

Yelp
Last night I brought a party of 9 to Pizza Melrose. It was my second time bringing a party there and I won't be returning. We were kept waiting for an hour and a half before being served and the service came with a heavy dose of attitude. At one point, our server spilled some wine (maybe a half cup) while pouring. Not a big deal but I was surprised that there was no offer to compensate or replace the spilled wine. Our table was seated next to the speaker and the music (along with restaurant noise) made conversation difficult. After close to an hour, I rose from my seat to privately ask the server if she might turn down the music. She paused from her phone conversation long enough to tell me (quite sternly) to return to my seat, that she was busy. When she came to the table shortly afterward and we asked if the music could be turned down, the answer was " I'll ask but probably not". And it was not. The pizza finally arrived a good 90 minutes and two or three bottles of wine after our orders had been placed. Half the plates arrived with an announcement from our server: "don't wait, it's going to be a while until the rest come". The pizzas themselves are overpriced by at least $8 per pizza. Each pizza is about the size of a dinner plate, very thin crust and thinly dressed - so basically enough for one. Aside from a nice thin crust, this is really not particularly special pizza when it comes to the gourmet variety. The average single person pizza price is $16- $20 when it should be $9 - $12. I ordered the special which was anchovies on white sauce and though I usually devour almost everything, I found this one unappetizing and didn't finish this. The Margarita and the Classique are what I've had before; they are both fine, nothing extraordinary - but quite overpriced. I was excited about this place at first. I know the neighbourhood needs a nice pizza place but this one is over-priced, and the service is dismissive and not as respectful as I would have liked. Instead, I'll recommend Notre Boeuf de Grace for a delicious and much more fairly priced meal that is served by people who want to please.

Yelp
Disappointed after initial excitement about a new pizza spot on Sherbrooke Street. There is little to no ambience and mood despite a beautiful local, which has some interesting features (bank vault door leads to coat check in the back). Pizzas were OK, overpriced at nearly $20 each ($17 & $19). Pizza crust was nice and thin, except too thin so it became crispy. Service was ok, though a little impersonal. I wouldn't recommend it nor foresee myself returning.
google avatar

Vincent C.

Yelp
We were looking forward to trying the pizza at this new place and it did not disappoint, From the decor to the music to the service to the pizza menu, everything exceeded our expectations. My wife had the Carbeau and I had the Classique and both were delicious. Unfortunately, they did not give the same thought to their beer selection. They had the same generic Sapporo brands on tap instead of some great local beers (Boreal, St. Ambroise, Cheval, Dieu Du Ciel..... I could name a dozen more). It would have been nice to enjoy a couple of pints with that delicious pizza.
google avatar

Judy L.

Yelp
I was so excited to try this new neighbourhood restaurant... we were greatly disappointed!!! Terrible service - ridiculous portion of Arugula salad - three large leaves for $11.00??? We were completely ignored, order came in wrong - when we spoke to one of the owner's on the way out. He shrugged his shoulders and said ..."bad night - it happens" (no remorse) He also arrogantly asked us if the pizza was good. Yes it was...but there are many good pizza's in this city. We won't be back.

Yelp

Yelp
We had the appetizer special which was really good as well as some Serrano ham, which was sliced in front of us on a large slicer in the middle of the restaurant and came with some delicious bread. Then we ordered some pizza which were very tasty and fresh. Our waiter, while a little pushy, was nice and overall service was fast and efficient.

Yelp
First time , reserved table for two .. Greeting and reservation went great . 18:30 on Saturday, October 15th, 2016.. On a friends recommendation , drove from little Italy area .. Very easy commute, met, Decarie and right on Sherbrooke and Bing parking a block away ;)! Had the calamari to start , tender and delicious in red sauce ! Ordered the private import bottle of Spanish wine ( Jumilla, Coso......) great wine for $40.00 .. Had two different pizzas which we shared, potatoe and sausage both were delicious and added a little house spicy sauce ( hot pepper in oil).. Definitely a home run that potatoe pizza but both were delicious including the meatball pizza from the table next to us ! Music and vibe of the place was great ... The size of the pizza and prices were also good .. Forgot the name of our waiter but very good and helpful ( tall with short hair on the side and longer on top ) along with Gaspar ( assistant ) who brought out the plates etc Gaspar was fantastic , made you feel welcome .. Even the pizza guys in the open kitchen were cool and chit chated with them on the way to the washroom .. Ricotta desert with an expresso ( restritto :) ) Highly recommend this place , great vibe and staff + took a walk in the neighborhood afterwards .. Will be back

Yelp
Great service and great food, me an my girlfriend decided to go out last night to get some food, and decided to stop here, we both ordered the classic pizza for our main course and the nutella pizza for dessert and we adored both of them

Sharon G.

Yelp
We went to Pizzeria Melrose on Saturday at 10:15 pm. The hours posted are until 11:00 pm. The front door was wide open and there was a table of 4 or 5 people, and a few people at the bar. When I asked for a table for two, the busboy seemed caught off guard, and when he spoke to someone at the back, he came back and said he was sorry, but because it was a quiet night, they were closing early. Why was the front door wide open? I got the feeling the people there wanted to party privately! Not good business sense to have hours posted, an open door, and then not allow people to come in a full 45 minutes before your published closing time. BAD business!

Ames M.

Yelp
Pros: pizzas are fresh, ambience is nice, and place is clean. Cons: we made reservations and still had to wait, hostess was a mix of rude and confused. So First impression was not very inviting...

Leanne T.

Yelp
We had the best pizza here! Fresh ingredients, creative combinations and creative starters! A lovely restaurant, good wine and great service! Good value for your money and portions were just right! This was a wonderful restaurant to finish our weekend away in Montreal!

Noah G.

Yelp
I love this spot! Amazing and creative pizzas and great people! The owner is constantly checking on his patrons. After going there twice, he recognizes me and comes over to say hi every time.
