PKL Pickleball Venue, Restaurant, and Bar Opens in South Boston | Eater Boston

"A 22,000-square-foot, social pickleball destination that blends sport and hospitality: players can use five dedicated courts and multiple lounge areas (each seating about 10), relax in a separate tucked-away lounge, or play on two shuffleboard courts and a cornhole area. The venue features two bars and dining areas and offers first-come, first-served bar seating plus reservation-based court and shuffleboard bookings. Food is overseen by a seasoned local chef and focuses on elevated, shareable versions of bar snacks—plentiful vegetarian options and lighter dishes that complement active play rather than weighing guests down. Standouts on the menu include wagyu pigs in a blanket, pretzel bites, wings, nachos, and a reimagined cheesesteak finished with chipotle aioli, house-made cheese sauce, sautéed peppers and onions, pickled onions, and chives. The beverage program includes classic cocktails, low-alcohol and nonalcoholic options, and a full bar. Located in the Iron Works development in South Boston, the venue aims to be as much about socializing and casual dining as it is about athletics; current hours and reservation details (including kitchen hours) are listed on the venue website." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

As this is a fairly new establishment, I didn't know what to expect but I had a great time. I wasn't there for pickleball or corn hole but having people playing the respective sports added to the fun vibe. The service was amazing and I was honestly impressed by the food. I will say, I had better ribs, but the fun selection of BBQ sauces to try with the ribs made the experience exceptional. I also loved the Dice Game when it came time to pay. While, we didn't win, it helped create a memorable experience.

We went to the Pig Beach BBQ at PKL. REALLY good BBQ!! Staff was super helpful and friendly. The sidewalk seating is dog friendly. They have a good selection of local microbrews and an excellent sauce caddy. Pulled pork and Brisket were both amazing.

I didn’t try any of the food here, but I came to play pickleball for the first time and really enjoyed it! Can’t wait to come back here and play more. The group instructor Matt was great at giving tips and explaining the rules. Not sure about the parking situation though. Update 6/5: just tried the Pig Beach pop up and it was FANTASTIC. Great service (shoutout to Grace for being super sweet and helpful with food suggestions!) and the food itself was phenomenal. I hope they stay for good because I’d definitely go back.

I had an amazing time playing pickleball at PKL Boston! The event was organized by a Harvard student organization, and it was such a great experience. This was my first time playing pickleball, and the staff was incredibly helpful and friendly—they really made me feel welcome and gave me courage to get started. The facility was well-maintained and had a great vibe. I definitely recommend checking it out if you're looking to try something new and have fun! I'll definitely be back!

Google
It's a great establishment, the courts and paddles are much better than Volo, but the service was very lack luster. I would not recommend hosting events/getting food as a group here. The reception lady had no clue what to do in general. Apparently there was no protocol when someone got injured or even a first aid kit. We were also asked to write down orders on a white board and then repeated to the staff. A very time consuming and error-prone system and of course they forgot to put in some of the orders...at the end we were just waiting for food and asked to move around so we just let court time go wasted.

Wow if you want to have a good time definitely you should go there and enjoy the games, food, drinks, good ambiance and a goos service.

Google
This place is HUGE and a perfect venue for get togethers and special occasions. Had a baby shower event for a friend here and I have to say it was unprecedented to celebrate to the backdrop of competitive pickleball grunts and loud bass music :) Their Lady Gaga cocktail was surprisingly tasty!

Yelp
One of my coworkers talks incessantly about the wonders of pickleball, so when a vendor of ours had a small gathering at PKL going was a no-brainer. The dink menu has a few very creative cocktails and the food was excellent. All the staff were upbeat snd courteous. Now I understand the hype! I had a lot of fun!

Yelp
Great place to learn pickleball! Players are very friendly and staff is very knowledgeable and helpful (Colin is great at teaching all skill levels). Really nice amenities as well.

Yelp
Book the courts in advance if you want to play pickleball!! We went for the bottomless brunch and were also able to play some corn hole for free. The food was so good!! There was a good mix of sweet and savory food, and there were some options if you're vegetarian (mostly sweet foods and the french fries). One thing to note is that if you're doing the bottomless brunch, you are not allowed to make any modifications to the food orders, and no take out is allowed for leftovers. They have live music and a really fun vibe. The place was astronaut/space themed which was super cute, and the drinks were all named after famous people (i ordered the harry styles cocktail and it was delicious!) We ordered a lot of plates but also received a few extra plates we did not order. Unfortunately we were unable to finish these extra plates and were also not allowed to take them home. Besides this, we had a pretty good overall experience!

Yelp
Great bottomless brunch spot for $25pp and indoor pickleball. Seating is at the picnic tables. Recommend booking court 5 if you want a court in private section located next to bar!

Yelp
I'm in Boston for the week, naturally I wanted to checkout the pickle scene. The registration for a drop in at a competitive level was easy and pretty much average price. I was overwhelmingly surprised by the hospitality of both the local picklers and the worker at PKL. GREAT place for social and pickle. THANKS!!

Yelp
It's a cool concept but it was very expensive at $100/hour on a Monday for a court. We were quickly ushered off the court after the hour we'd purchased and were told there was another reservation directly after us which was fine. However, we went to the bar after and saw that the employees were playing around casually on the court we'd just exited. Also, an employee continued to walk through the sidelines of our court over and over again which was off.

Yelp
I was not sure what to expect when my brother requested we do pickle ball for his birthday but to my surprise we all had a great time. A great chill vibe with live music! Upon walking in you are greeted at the desk and asked if you've been there before. Since it was all of our first time, we had to complete waivers that you can do on your phone with a simple scan code. Once completed, you are free to roam around and view all their sections. Once all of the guests arrived, we were all bright to the pickle ball section and explained how to play the game. It looks and plays similar to a larger scale ping pong game. I was happily surprised that I enjoyed the game and we all became very competitive. We were a large group of 20 people so we stuck to mostly shareable apps and lots of drinks. I LOVED the roasted cauliflower (not buffalo) it was unexpectedly delicious and would def order again. The chicken wings, egg rolls, sliders and fries were all good as well. I really enjoyed the drink names and descriptions, so playful and helpful. They are all named after singers and or musical groups. I stuck to the same drink all night - the outkast - so fresh and so clean" def recommend. Our waiter for the night was amazing, kind, helpful and knowledgeable. I can't remember his name but he had great curly long hair and a great personality. Took one star off as the wasn't really much cohesion to the other parts of the building. You had to walk around and just figure out what each station was about and what to do. I would def return!

Yelp
I went here for a pickleball + drinks birthday party. My cocktail was excellent and so pretty. I got the Marilyn Monroe drink which was a February special. I requested to not have jalapeno in my drink and they were able to accommodate my request. The service was a bit slow and they do not serve water by default which I found strange given the nature of the bar. Also the courts were pretty close together. The walls, ceilings, and neighboring courts definitely got in the way of our games quite a bit. I still had a great time because we weren't playing serious games, but I think the space could be an issue if you wanted to play a competitive game.

Yelp
Great vibes on a Saturday night! We came here to play cornhole and have some drinks. The music was on point, all the pickle-ball courts were packed, the bar area was busy as well as the lounge areas too! I heard the reservations for the courts are tough but cornhole is first come first serve
google avatar

Eric R.

Yelp
Company outing here. Good food, fun times. Not just pickleball, played a bunch of cornhole. Decent bar
google avatar

Marina W.

Yelp
This one is tough because as a place to play pickleball indoors, it's great BUT it's extremely expensive to rent a court for an hour (especially during the summer). I love pickleball and wish that I could afford to bring friends here to chill out, have a beer or snacks, and play some pickleball. I'm giving it three stars because it's a great concept but definitely not aimed at folks who are just trying to play some indoor games (like me!). But I get it - you've gotta make money to pay rent in this location, so I'm glad to see people going there, it just won't be me most of the time.

Yelp
The food was pretty mid, has the donuts were pretty plain and too hard. The same can be said for the bacon as well. I did like their sweet potato fries, and the Egg skillet does offer a variety of flavors albeit with too much cheese. I would have liked to try a different flavor of wings.

Yelp
Nice place but not enough pickleball courts and open play hours.. pretty pricey for open play and membership .. the bar and lounge looks pretty nice . Could be a cool place to hang out .

Yelp
Really cool idea of integrating pickle ball and bar into one! Pickle ball and shuffleboard were easy to get the hang of, so it was really quick to get into the games and start playing. The food was good, however I think some dishes were hit or miss. The cauliflower, wings, and mashed potato dishes were yummy! But the hot dog and nachos were subpar (imo). The drinks were the same as well, hit or miss (some too strong and some were alright). Although I had a fun time, I didn't feel that it was an incredibly special experience. I do think it's a good place to catch up with old friends!
google avatar

Emily L.

Yelp
Clean space, drink and food service, free cornhole, rent courts or shuffleboard, a good time! Remember to book online as courts do get booked up. They have weekday around lunch time specials that's $50/hr court rental vs $75/hr.

Yelp
They have pretty good food and drinks! Its fun to play pickleball while having a good time with friends! I would come here with a big group! The food took some time but the drinks were ready pretty fast. Everyone was very friendly and kind.

Yelp
PKL is the perfect place to start your pickleball journey! We came in on St Patrick's day for a Pickleball 101 class and had so much fun. Parking was super easy (ample street parking) and it was a party as soon as we stepped inside - lots of action everywhere and something for everyone - you can play some cornhole, pickleball if you reserved a court, have some drinks and food, and watch sports on the TVs throughout. We didn't get any food or drinks so I can't speak to that, but we had an awesome class with our instructor in a really fun environment. Our instructor provided paddles and taught us the basics of dinking, deeper shots, serving, and how to count points and play the game. Our intro class had a total of 5 people with one instructor (I'm guessing it was smaller than usual as it was on St Patty's day) which was great for getting close instruction and corrections on our form. He was super helpful and made the class really fun. The class was $65 per person for a 1.5 hour class, which is a bit pricy but felt worth it with the small group. At the end of the class, our instructor gave us some really key information about getting the right gear to play - learning about what kind of shoes you need so you don't wear through your regular shoes/hurt yourself was very helpful, and he even told us about great websites (tennis express and tennis warehouse) where you can try out shoes. I would love to return to PKL in the future for open sessions - they're just pretty expensive at $25 for each person for a drop-in, but the facility is very nice and such a fun environment!

Yelp
Cool place for a work event, my review will be for a work sponsored event. I was not interested in playing pickleball and in all honesty I did not even realize that this was a pickleball place until I arrived. For some reason 'PKL' just did not translate to pickleball in my mind. So I was a little surprised when I showed up and was asked to sign a waiver. The food was really good actually and I definitely would be happy to go to another event here. It was great networking and we had our own bar which also helped with the networking. Getting there is a little odd because you have to walk through highways from back Bay but it's a doable walk. The artwork inside feels like crypto bro stuff but that's neither here nor there
google avatar

Kervin L.

Yelp
The bottomless brunch they had for a limited brought me here and I gotta admit it was well worth it! From candied bacon to breakfast burritos you can't go wrong and the vibe is chill! Def coming back next time they offer it again!

Amy C.

Yelp
READ THE FINE PRINT!!! it was our first time and we arrived about 30 minutes early for reservations, which happened to fall during happy hour on a Friday. The staff graciously offered us to go ahead and get warmed up on the courts before the rest of our party arrived and quickly ushered us to the courts and table next to our court. Since we knew it was happy hour we went ahead and ordered multiple drinks and food thinking we were getting it at half price along with the already stiff court reservation price. It wasn't until we checked out that we learned there was fine print for happy hour saying you have to take your drinks and food in the main dining area! Not cool!!

Yelp
So Fun! Great food. We got snacks to split by the picnic tables and courts. Great spot for a big birthday with adult friends. I'm sure brewery kids would thrive too!

Yelp
Yummy bar bites, a variety of different cocktail options and fun to be had for all ages! We had my grandpa's 82 here with the whole family (12+ people) and it was a blast. We played pickleball, cornhole and shuffleboard. Service was attentive, on schedule and excellent!
google avatar

Yelp
Cool place with decent beer selection. But live music was way too loud, it hurt our ears and made it impossible to have any kind of conversation.
google avatar

Yelp
My organization had an event at PKL last night and it was fantastic! From the beginning planning stages, the team at PKL was responsive and friendly. Molly, the event coordinator, made everything so easy from recommendations on food to overall planning details. Matt, behind the bar, was courteous and attentive. Overall great experience and would definitely recommend for a large group outing/event.

Cathleen S.

Yelp
such a fun place!! had a great time playing pickleball..Want to come back for drinks and cornhole!

Yelp
I ordered the chicken tenders, they looked undercooked in the dim light and i thought theyd be ok. Gave me horrendous food poisoning. The pickleball and beers were good tho. Steer clear of the food
google avatar

Matthew L.

Yelp
I want to give this place the benefit of the doubt because I like to see new spots like this open up in the city. However, not sure I can justify it since the prices are a bit out of control for one hour rent time and the location is horrific, meaning just logistics wise getting here and where the location sits. I went here for an event and I thought it was a cool concept, indoor Pickle Ball courts, a few bars, food etc. The place is pretty large, sits inside what looks like an old warehouse or artists space. There are 3 courts and the place has shuffleboard and cornhole as well (not sure they needed it) and there are other private spaces for gatherings and two large bars. The food here is decent, lots or plays on bar food and good selection of cocktails and beer etc. The staff is cool, friendly. The bad part is parking is non existent here, you either park on main road and risk getting towed because it says 2 hour but that really means 30 minutes, or you risk parking on resident only side streets of Southie which is not going to work. There are no nearby available lots, garages, I get that most will take public transportation here, but there are nearby T stations and the whole hassle of that piece is messy and shouldnt have to be. Prices are a bit extreme and couple that with the hassle of parking and Ill skip the place next time.

Terrence M.

Yelp
I have been a local to the South Boston area for some time now and have visited PKL several times. Each time I have an amazing time with the splendid drinks and terrific food while getting to play Pickleball a few times getting my sweat on. One day waiting for my court I had a phenomenal encounter with Jonathan the bartender. I was in the mood for something new and after only a few questions he knew exactly what to make me and it was beyond this world good. He made me the drink while keeping conversation and made it all look so easy. He was in and out working his butt off making drinks by himself for the whole bar and play area by himself but still had time to be a good bartender and keep me entertained while I waited on my colleagues. I even tried to make the drink at home but that man worked wonders in that glass for it to taste 10X better than what I did. Service like this is what keeps me coming back again and again. You literally can not go wrong with this place from the amazing service, great games, and an overall wonderful vibe.

Yelp
This place has great drinks, has a super fun atmosphere, solid food and incredibly friendly staff

Yelp
This place was so much fun! My boyfriend and I went on a date here - rented a pickleball court for an hour, which we ended up extending because we were having such a good time. The drinks are really good, the food was great, the service was friendly, and the atmosphere was exactly what you'd hope for given their cool space chimp logo. I could see myself bringing my family here - there's a lot to do and it's kid-friendly but not kid-centered - or a group of my friends to knock back a few beers and play a couple of games. My boyfriend and I will definitely go back for another date - something a little different than the usual dinner and drinks. Highly recommend!

Emma E.

Yelp
This was our first time here and the courts were good. The waitstaff was rude and not helpful. We reserved the court for an hour and our food came at 45 minutes. They did not bring utensils, napkins, or hand sanitizer. We were eating and playing and were forced out of the court very rudely at 3:55. They just stood in the middle of the court and said thank you but did not even give us a warning. They started cleaning up the food while we were still eating. The staff would look at us strangely when we hit the balls and actually played the game. Very disapointed.

Emily K.

Yelp
So much fun, such a great atmosphere! Perfect for a work happy hour / gathering - there is something for everyone between the variety of games, drinks, seating areas, food. The service was great. Food is AMAZING which we didn't expect/ figured it would be average bar food but it was incredible food!

Sarah W.

Yelp
A great King and Queen tournament. Really high level of play, super nice people, cool place. Only recommendation would be shades for the windows, otherwise perfect!!!!!
