Pla Daek Thai Esan Food Review - Piedmont Avenue - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"The Thai restaurant on Oakland’s Piedmont Avenue specializes in Esan dishes from the northeastern region of Thailand, like tender pork belly and bamboo shoots steamed in a banana leaf, or funky duck larb. The menu is long, covering everything from curries and soups to wok-fried noodle dishes, all of which are jam-packed with spicy, sweet, and salty flavors. But one bite into the crispy roti with the side of yellow curry, and you’ll know this place is something special. The flaky, chewy layers soak up the rich curry really nicely—this should definitely be on your table. Pla Daek works just as well for a casual weeknight drop-in as it does for a boozy weekend dinner (they have a great list of cocktails and beer)." - Julia Chen

Great Thai restaurant. Wonderful atmosphere and service. Some of the dishes are outstanding. The Kha Moo was an excellent dish of Thai meets Chinese influence with meat that just melts in your mouth. The fresh spring rolls appetizer is not to be missed; delicious ingredients served with 2 well contrasting sauces

Google
Excellent Thai food. Sauces (the base sauce for the green beans and the hot and sour sauce for the crab fried rice) are somewhat overpowered. Dishes are visually pleasing. Eggs and crabs in the crab fried rice are both plenty in quantity and well cooked, while the rice base is well seasoned. Could have been better if staff are more attentive. Since we were seated outside, no one came to check on us, and no one refilled water. Service feels unwelcoming. The food is very great so kudos to the chefs.

Google
It’s authentic. A large group of Thai folks have a huge party while I am dining. If they like it, I am sure that’s pretty authentic. The portion size is very large. The curry tends to be very creamy with a heavy portion of coconut milk. The mango duck is very crispy. I like the presentation of the dish. I also like the juicy bell peppers and mango within the red curry itself. The decor is quite interesting. I can tell the owner really likes fish.

walked in on a thursday for lunch, was seated quickly, not too busy. really cozy, comfy restaurant with skylights and natural light and fun shaped rattan light fixtures. server recommended the shrimp cakes, which were crispy, peppery and delicious served with a sweet chili sauce. reminded me of my vietnamese grandmother’s fried crab balls. the butterfly pea cocktail (not elderflower) was really yummy and pretty, couldn’t really taste the alcohol. the khao soi chicken was delicious and a huge portion, probably didn’t need the ka moo as well but they made wonderful leftovers! the ka moo is perfectly braised pork, really so tender that it melts in your mouth. it came out with what seemed like a green chili fish sauce that had a lot of kick to it but i didn’t feel was necessary given how flavorful the ka moo stew was. upgraded the side of rice to coconut rice and was not disappointed! would definitely come back!

Google
I want to give high marks for the food not being salty. The papaya salad was very spicy but delicious. I strongly recommend the chicken noodles with curry soup! The food comes out really generous and good price.

Google
Very atmospheric and warm Thai place with huge portions and nice stuff. It could be packed on weekends but this is another prove of its popularity. I really like the interior, wall art and other details add that true elegant Asian vibe to your dinner. What’s about food… it is very savory and tasty! My choice was Basil eggplants with beef and that plate was amazing. All vegetables were perfectly cooked and complimented each other. As well as meat. Can definitely recommend this meal. My friends picked red and green curry with wild rice and khao soy chicken. All plates were delicious. Their drinks are not only good but also nicely decorated. Recommend to try lemonade and have that aesthetics pleasure. Can say that prices are fair for that big meal and service. That’s the place where I really want to return

Google
So delicious! My taste buds are very happy! Love the combination of different flavors and they are all balanced very well. Will come back again.

Google
A delicious place for fish dishes. Beautiful a e s t h e t i c restaurant interior with woven basket fish hanging from the ceiling, cute pink butterfly plates with pink napkin (highly recommended), Thai iced tea with a fancy flower to make you feel special, and more. My only critique is that they need to fill water glasses once people finish drinking their water. We need to stay hydrated out here

Yelp
I enjoyed my time at Nua Thai Kitchen. It has a lively atmosphere without feeling overbearing, spacious seating and soothing decor. Our designated service staff was kind, attentive and responsive--in addition to other service staff who "jumped in" when they were all busy. The demand of their food was clear by the number of people already eating when I got there. The actual taste of the food was flavorful, fresh, and has quality produce--all with a homemade flair was absolutely delicious. I had coconut soup (with chicken) and side of white rice. My date had deep fried pastry filled savory potatoes and vegetables sautéed in noodles. All of it was prepared in a manner that was thoughtful, care and investment in its remarkable taste! My only complaint is that I didn't have an empty enough stomach to taste more of the options on the menu.

Yelp
Had a lovely evening dining here with friends - the food was fragrant, colorful, and full of unique textures. The duck dishes stood out as absolute stars of the night - especially the duck larb and the duck curry. The curry had a rich, creamy depth with crispy duck adding a satisfying crunch. The kee mao was hands-down the most delicious dish we ordered - the thick noodles were perfectly fried with the best balance of sweet savory spicy and sour! We tried the wonton pad thai, which had an interesting texture thanks to the crispy wonton sheets, but after a few bites we all agreed we'd stick with classic pad thai next time. A surprise highlight was the sakoo - chewy tapioca dumplings with a savory filling, served in crisp lettuce cups. It was our first time trying something like that, and it was absolutely delicious. Service was generally attentive but the restaurant seemed a bit understaffed. At times, we felt rushed to finish our meal. That said, staff were friendly and tried their best to accommodate us throughout the evening. Overall, this spot is a great pick for flavorful, comforting Thai food with a few creative twists. Would definitely come back for more duck and kee mao!

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant. The decor is lovely and ambiance is light and friendly. Food is good to ok. I had the chicken and sticky rice and salad.

Yelp
Very friendly service and beautifully presented food! Reserved a table here for Mother's Day and my family loved it. I don't remember the exact names but we got: Papaya salad - lovely and refreshing Short rib curry - awesome and flavorful Calamari - really well seasoned and tasty Crispy duck salad - great, although not that much duck Game hen - this was the most filling dish but I have to say I thought the chicken was a little dry and the curry was not well seasoned enough to overcome this. The staff was also extra kind and let us slice a cake from outside while we were there.

Yelp
Had the veggie see ew and a jasmine beer. The beer was nice and refreshing and the see ew was good with chili sauce. It's a lot of food and comes with a little side salad

Yelp
Newer isn't always better, and sometimes change isn't a good thing. I really liked Pla Daek the old restaurant that used to be here. In fact, I haven't been so sad in a restaurant closing for a long time. I felt like I was in mourning. Speaking of mourning, I was so dissapointed and heartbroken with this new place. The new menu and higher prices must be going to their remodel. Awful, and I do mean awful duck larb salad. Weird chewy yet bone filled duck that I couldn't eat. It just sat on my plate while I ate their sour tasting salad and thought about the japanese place across the street. I didn't even bother with the mango sticky rice because I felt it would be a disappointment, and a hit to my wallet. Like multiple punches from Tyson. My friend's teriyaki chicken thing tasted like the one you get at the mall. You know the one where they chase you down and try to give you a small sample of chicken on a toothpick? Yeah, that's the one that serve here as Thai food at triple the price with some fried rice and sauce. I'm sure they're laughing at us in the back with the crazy mark up. I can't vouch for this place. The food is meh and expensive and not at all memorable for the right reasons.

Yelp
I was so surprised about the authentic Thai dishes I had at Nua Thai. I had previously eaten at this location before it's change in ownership and the Thai food then was good but this was even better! Highlights that i liked: Sticky rice - this was honestly so interesting, it was like a mochi. I don't know exactly what it was but i liked it! It's just different to have as an appetizer. Crispy sticky rice - this reminds me of the laos sticky rice my friend makes and i absolutely love it so i would highly recommend this! Drunken Noodle - you can't go wrong with drunken noodle. So flavorful and perfect spice level! Shortrib Noodles - the meat was so tender and the soup was very flavorful. Nice to have on a cold weather! I'm from LA so most of the Thai food we have isn't as elevated. It was really nice to see different types of Thai food outside of your typical Drunken Noodle, Satay skewers, etc. It also almost felt like some of the dishes were fused with Cambodian, Laos, and other southeastern Asian cuisines. The pricing is also a bit steep if you ask me BUT is very average relative to the bay area. I don't mind splurging for Nua Thai and if I'm ever in the area again, I'd love to come back!

Yelp
We had come here before, when it was a different place. All the appetizers and soup were good. My husband liked the chicken and I liked the calamari. The 2 noodle dishes were just okay. I think it needed more flavor. They have a lot of different things here, so I would definitely be back to try other things. The service was good and the place was nice and super crowded.

Yelp
This place is now one of my favorite Thai restaurants! Came here with family on a Wednesday evening for dinner and there was no wait. It was our first time here so we ordered family style so we can try everything. The place is clean and well lit. The staff are very friendly and service is fast. Sakoo Served steaming hot with fresh lettuce. Great presentation and good appetizer for sharing. Crispy Tom Yum Calamari One of the best calamari I've had. Big calamari pieces and fried to perfection. I don't remember much about the Tom Yum flavor but the aioli was a good pairing. Som Tum (papaya salad) Fresh and spicy. The sauce has the perfect consistency; it wasn't too watery. Massamun short rib The meat was soft and fell right off from the bone. The curry was delicious and rich. It was perfect to go with rice. Nua BBQ The grilled pork was juicy and flavorful. The sticky rice was aromatic and everything tasted great with the sauce. Pad Thai Saucy but not soggy. Flavor is on point. Basil with Chicken This dish has a beautiful oil shine to it when served. Flavorful but on the saltier side; perfect with rice as well. Mango Sticky Rice Portion is much smaller than i thought. Shareable between 2 people. I was surprised that the mango is ripe even though it's not in season. Thai Tea Roti Dessert on the house because they ran out of thai ice cream. They replaced it with vanilla ice cream instead. The combination of hot crispy roti and vanilla ice cream is bomb!

Yelp
What a nice experience! The husband and I came here for one of our very rare lunch outings without kid. We always chose something that she would probably not like (adventurous and or spicy), but decided that we will take her with us next time, since she would LOVE it there! And they have enough non-spicy dishes. I haven't been at this location before it became Nua, so I don't know whether they just kept the interior design - nevertheless, I loved it. What a breath of fresh air with the plant theme on the walls and the airy feeling overall. Loved the colorful dishes and the amazing presentation! What a treat. We had summer rolls (amazing with mango inside and a great peanut sauce - the green chili sauce was too spicy for me), a curry dish and the Tom Ka soup. All was extraordinarily good. Portions were big and we took a good chunk home for dinner. Service was fast and cordial and always on top of everything. Me likey...

Yelp
We were in the mood for Thai food and decided to put in a pick up order. We called a few times before getting through, once we did, it was easy to place our order which included pad thai, yellow curry with tofu, Tom Yum soup, garlic chicken with fried rice, and sakoo (mushroom filled dumplings). Appreciate that menus online denoting gluten free items as well as them using gluten free sauces enabling more people to have options. We went for pick up and parking was scarce so we quickly ran in to get the food. We were immediately helped. The restaurant itself has beautiful interior and nice vibes to sit down and eat. The food itself was good. Our favorite were the mushroom dumplings given how unique they were as well as the garlic fried rice. The fried chicken didn't have much meat and a bit more fat than what. We would have preferred. Despite requesting mild spice levels several times, the Tom Yum soup and Pad Thai were spicier than expected. That said, we'd still consider returning for another visit!

Yelp
Open for only 7 days and they're in soft opening phase. Hubby saw it on google maps and we were seated immediately. They are still waiting for their alcohol license. We ordered the roti with an extra roti, khao soi with braised beef, pad see ew with chicken, and mango with sticky rice. The Sakoo was sold out but we wanted to try that and will get it next time. The roti was crispy, chewy, and the yellow curry was delicious. Glad we ordered the extra roti because the 2 kids and 2 adults in our party inhaled the appetizer. The khao soi was really excellent - flavorful and they present it with a trio of chili options. The noodles were the perfect level of al dente chewiness. The mustard greens on the side were just the right mix of sour and salty in addition to the lime wedge and red onion slices that come with the dish. We also enjoyed the pad see ew which was not too salty or too sweet as it is at some Thai restaurants. The pandan sticky rice and sauce with thin slices of mango on top was presented beautifully and we loved the play of delicate flavors. Not too sweet or salty. Service was great and their bathroom and restaurant was clean. Nice new addition to the area and we will be back. Can't wait to see what alcoholic beverages they offer once their license comes in! I also like that they have kid plates, cups, and utensils

Yelp
This place took over Pla Dek, so my spouse and I decided to check it out. The inside looks pretty similar to the previous place, which is smart because it costs less in terms of money and waste. When I went about a week ago, it had a soft opening menu. The two of us ordered a few items to share and didn't have any leftovers. The Sai Oua Croquette had a good crisp. The flavor of the patty was light. I found it to be spicy, but I can't really handle spicy food. The server said this location intentionally lowered the spice in the menu compared to other locations, so spice lovers probably won't think this is spicy enough. When we ordered the Shortribs Noodle, they clarified it came with egg noodles, which is different from the menu. However, I do think the egg noodles is a better fit for the flavor profile than rice noodles. The meat was tasty, and the dish was pretty flavorful, though by the end it got a bit too heavy for me. We also had Mango Sticky Rice for dessert. They made it with pandan, so this was different from the typical dessert. The mango was soft and was lightly sweet. I would've liked the rice to be a bit drier and less soft to provide a bigger contrast, though it was still good. The sauce on the top was a tasty addition. The server was really nice. I like that they use reusables (especially the reusable chopsticks, which is rare) and am interested in coming back to try their other dishes. ECO NOTES (Dine-In) Dine-In Dishware: Reusable plates and bowls Napkins: Single-use disposable paper napkin Utensils: Metal fork & spoon as well as reusable wooden chopsticks Water cups: Medium-sized reusable glass cups

Yelp
First time coming here and we had wonderful experience. It's a pretty restaurant, beautifully decorated with relaxing colors and natural elements. Our waitress was so attentive and friendly. The Crispy Rice Ball salad was AMAZING, very flavorful and great texture throughout. We also enjoyed the Crispy Tom Yum Calamari and the Praram. Can't wait to come back again and try their other specialties.

Best Thai I've had in a really long time! Inventive dishes, great service. Good location on Piedmont.

Yelp
Nua Thai Kitchen replaces Pla Daek with a new decor and a different variant of Thai cuisine. Offerings (usual with a variance): apps, sides, drinks, salads, curry & soup, specialty dishes, street food. Can order at counter or at table. Food came in 20 minutes, definitely made to order. Slurps: Tom Yum Young Coconut Soup (15.95) -ordered with veggies. Medium spicy. Proteins +$. Some reviews mentioned "bland" proteins... -tom yum component tart with the blend of lemongrass, galanga, kefir lime leaves, lime squeeze. -fresh young coconut slices added a twinge of sweetness to the savoryness of the veggie broth created by boiling white mushrooms, white onions, cherry tomatoes, green bean, parsley, lettuce, green peppers, carrots & wilted broccoli. -the medium spiciness of thai chili was unexpectedly very pronounced & concentrated causing me to violently cough for a few seconds. Thinking medium would be mild, i was drinking the savory broth too fast. Wasn't prepared for the heat. Thai chilies varies in heat levels, not a constant. *declined rice to dilute heat since i seldom eat rice. Nonetheless i was comped a Thai Tea to ease my discomfort. Tea ok but too sweet for my palate. 4.5 stars. Soup a splendid mix of savory, spicy, tart & sweet notes. Would re-order but would drink broth slowly in smaller portions

Yelp
Had lunch here this week and really enjoyed their basil eggplant with tofu. It's my go to dish when I go to Thai restaurants and completely colors my opinion of and return to a place. Nua's version of the dish was lovely without being greasy, which seems to be a challenge for that dish at many places. Service was prompt and friendly. Interior is bright, clean and with sturdy chairs that didn't make me worry about my large size. Looking forward to a return visit!

Yelp
Came for lunch and there was plenty of seating and the tables were nicely spaced. The menu has a little bit of everything you could want and lots of selections of hot teas. The only negative is the front of house staffing. There was one person seating folks, taking orders, delivering food, clearing the tables, answering the phone, giving out the take out and taking payment. She was awesome, but it is way too much for one and caused delays in taking orders, responding to requests (like a second tea cup), etc. That said, the food was outstanding. The Crispy Veggie Spring Rolls came out hot and were tasty. The Tom Nuer Sapp comes with a custom spice level and they do not scrimp on the brisket (although I did not see any crispy shallots). The Crispy Wonton Pad Thai was a delight - and I can't believe I ate the whole thing. If not for the staffing this would have been a solid four stars. That said, I will be back as there are so many other dishes I want to try.

Dov B.

Yelp
The restaurant is beautiful, with intricate plates and calm ambiance. We shared 3 vegan dishes: papaya salad, summer rolls, and basil eggplant. These are common dishes, which are rarely made to perfection. The flavors were deep and complex. The ingredients very fresh and flavorful. The server took her time to explain the vegan sauces. Such a joyous surprise!

Yelp
Have not had time to write a review for a little bit but felt compelled to write one for Nua Thai Kitchen. We were in the neighborhood to buy my husband's favorite cake for his birthday. My husband and I were both in the mood for some South Asia cuisine and I suggested that we go to Pla Daek. We walked up and down Piedmont Ave and was unable to locate the "temporarily closed" restaurant. Come to find Nua had taken its place. They have decent Yelp reviews and so we decided to give it a try. The dining experience was good. But what impressed us the most was the presentation, flavor and smell of the cuisine. We tried 3 things. The fragrant tapioca based mushroom dumplings (Sakoo), the crispy "tum yum" calamari and the duck larb. All three exceeded expectations in all the way that mattered!
google avatar

Suraj P.

Yelp
The food at Nua was incredible! The restaurant is very cute and well decorated. We chatted with the waitress for a little bit and she told us more about the restaurant and the food. For all the veggie options, she told us that they also use vegan/veggie sauces! As a vegetarian it's so nice knowing that our meal was fully prepared to our needs. 100% will be going back!
google avatar

Yelp
I would land between 3.5-4 stars. Very nice interior, clean, friendly staff. Food tasted fresh and the veggies were perfectly cooked. Love that they have gluten free and vegetarian options all clearly marked on the menu. They have vegan dishes as well. The gluten free pad see ew had a really good wok flavor, but needs a bit of work for other flavors (usually is garlic umami) in there. We were also wanting a bit of a larger portion of noodles. The red curry was very mild, I think it'll suit most people's palates. We ran out of rice very quickly. Tom yum is spicy with a stronger tomato flavor that I'm used to with this dish. Overall we enjoyed our meal and didn't have any real complaints. We heard the table next to us exclaiming how good their meal was with each new dish that came out. We will be back to try other items.

Yelp
Nua Thai was still in their "soft opening" phase when The Wife and I stopped by without a reservation Saturday night, about 5:30. There were only two tables seated, but the place filled up after we arrived. I can see why. The interior is very bright and attractive, despite the narrow storefront. All the fixtures and furniture looked new. The service was friendly, but got strained as more people showed up. They couldn't keep up with bussing tables, for example. I know that restaurant labor costs are a problem now. The menu had standard fare, plus dishes that sounded more authentic and unfamiliar. We started with summer rolls, which were exceptional. They even had a piece of mango within, which I loved. They came with plenty of peanut sauce, and some other kind of watery hot sauce. We tried Sakoo, tapioca dumplings with peanut and shitake mushroom filling. It was different, and I feel like it was expertly made, but the tapioca texture was off-putting for me. The Wife ordered her regular Pad See Ew, which was excellent, every component cooked the right amount. I went with a specialty, Nua praw garlic noodles. The noodles and prawns were on separate plates. The prawns had the shells still partly on - I wasn't sure if it was intended that they be eaten that way, so I peeled them. Rather messy. Fortunately, they were well cooked and tasty, and the thick garlic noodles were also good. To wash it all down, we both got hot tea, which got to choose from a good selection. We both got our own pot. It took a while to get our check - I had to flag down the overworked (by then) waiter, but we weren't in a hurry. Some of the flavors were unfamiliar to me like I said, but it was all very well made, definitely a cut above. Looking forward to going back, especially considering the reasonable prices.

Yelp
Came for soft opening and everything went smoothly. Everyone was very friendly. Quality of the food was great. And so so GF/Celiacs friendly!!! Fried chicken with garlic fried rice. 3/5 a lot of batter, not enough chicken but the garlic fried rice was great Green curry 5/5 delicious Pad See Ew 4/5 loaded with veggies Crispy Rice Salad 4.5/5 SO fresh and right amount of acidity

Yelp
The food is amazing!! absolutely everything we ordered was flavorful, fresh, and delicious. The ambiance is inviting and bright.

Yelp
I love this Thai restaurant. It tastes authentic and fancy too. Love the chicken over garlic fried rice. The hostess is very friendly and remembered me.

Yelp
I was happy to see a new Thai restaurant open in this neighborhood that I visit often. Walking in, I was pleasantly surprised by the light, airy decor which was a nice blend of southeast Asian style and Oakland rusticness. I ended up going twice on my weekend trip, which says something about how good the food was. Easily some of the best Thai food I have had anywhere around the Bay. The first night I tried the tumeric sticky rice with moo ping (grilled pork) and duck larb. Both of the dishes were a perfect blend of authentic in flavor and ingredients without being too 'over the top' in spiciness or fish sauce as many legit Thai places can be. The larb had large, juicy pieces of duck rolled in a tasty lime/basil/chile spice mix. The next day I came back to try the sakoo which looked interesting and was something I had never seen before. It's like a savory mochi, or a big rice noodle. I'd definitely recommend trying it - it may look interesting, but it is definitely a tasty bite. I also got the khao soi with short ribs, another combination I haven't seen elsewhere but it worked very well. Come hungry if you're going to order this dish! It's rich, creamy, and spiced but you're going to want to eat every last bite of it. The owners were very kind and had some fun joking when they could tell that I was staring at every dish coming out of the kitchen waiting excitedly for mine haha. Overall a great addition to the area and highly recommended for anyone that happens to be around

Yelp
My go-to Thai. Tammy and team are very special. So many vegan options. Food is the fresh and delicious. Interior decor is trendy and modern. I obsessed with the Tom Yum soup.

Yelp
We got the chance to dine here on Nua soft opening week. The restaurant itself is very charming with emphasis on nature. The owners were super sweet and hospitable, gave us lots of recommendations. Thai style spring rolls: love the addition of avocado. The 2 sauces elevated the dish. Unlike other thai places that just gives you premade mae ploy Roti: was fresh made soft and flaky was like paratha style was soo good! Sakoo: my favorite dish in thai cuisine. Very few places in the bay area serve this dish and Nua is by far my new favorite place for it! So soft, sweet and savory. I dipped it into the thai chili sauce that came with the spring rolls. Thai style sausages: i dont like sausages much so i couldnt appreciate it as i should, but my husband loved it. Prawn with garlic noodles: this dish was amazing but i was too full by the time our entrees came so we took a bite and took the rest home. Khao soi: never had khao soi style curry befor was very unique. The noodles had a nice chew the crispy noodles on top gave it more texture. The braised beef was rich and soft reminds of porkbelly. Mango pandan sticky rice: i love pandan and i love this unique take on a classic thai dessert. I wish the sauce was a little sweeter. Overall this place blew me away, the bay area is saturated by soo many thai and vietnamese restaurants so it seems monotonous. So its very refreshing to find a place with more innovative dishes while staying true to its roots. This will be our new go to place when we're in the mood for thai food.

Yelp
The salads here are so delicious and the pad Thai noodles are really good too. Have eaten here multiple times and will be happy to go back soon.

Yelp
Vibe and ambience are wonderful! Waitress is super nice and hospitable. Massamun short ribs had a spiciness, richness, and slight sweetness that warmed me to the core. The (pandan) mango sticky rice is a must-have, if you had to order one thing it would be that! Just opened this week but this restaurant is lively and one of my top places already.

Yelp
Amazing job with the ambience, energy, food! Thoroughly enjoyed. Wish the coconut stews were less sweet

Yelp
We ordered 3 dishes. Beef soup, hot and sour tofu, and steamed vegetables with peanut sauce. Place is lovely, service attentive, prices a little high. I try as many Thai restaurants as I can since so flavorful but I was not impressed with their soups. Lacked body and spicy intensity I prefer. The peanut sauce was super. I wanted to lick the plate! The 2 other people liked the food more than I did but I won't go back.

Yelp
We got take out and definitely surprised with the portion size. Seems to be a dishes for one vs. family style. The flavors are really good and vegetables cooked well. We got pad thai, eggplant and tofu and the green curry. The curry was the most disappointing, very watered down, not enough curry paste.
google avatar

Ian S.

Yelp
Got take out. Tried standard stuff (since it was our first time) before branching out and trying their more interesting offerings. Tom Kha soup - Too sweet for me but my partner loved it. Pad Thai was solid but safe. Red Curry with Beef. I'd read it can be mild. Our serving, however, was straight up bland. It was lots of coconut milk with very little curry paste. Very disappointing. On the other hand the veggies were fresh and well cooked.

Yelp
Ordered for delivery. I had the Drunken Noodles. The portion was small and to my surprise, bland. I ordered it "medium" and it seemed like there were no chiles in it at all. The noodles were missing the usual smoky wok hei flavor, and they were barely warm. I had to heat them up. My husband had the Praram and the Sticky Rice & Mango. He said the Praram was "ok, not great" and the sticky rice was different from the usual: instead of tasting like coconut, there was a different flavor that he couldn't identify. He was not a fan. Mediocre food, overpriced for the portion size.

Yelp
So good! This is the closest I've come to the experience of eating in Thailand without buying an airline ticket. (Not that there aren't other good local Thai restaurants, but I found Nua Thai Kitchen far closer to the freshness, richness, and fragrant, piquant, balanced flavors of Thailand than any of those others.) I ordered two dishes myself, all the while wishing I had a few friends with me to order more dishes.

Yelp
I had been waiting to see them open, and had taken a peak at the menu which had a lot of new exciting items you don't find at your generic Thai spots. I finally got the opportunity to try and I was not disappointed! We got the sakoo, which was something completely new to us, but so tasty. We also got the shrimp and garlic noodles, and the shrimp were so crispy and the sauce was delicious. My only complaint was it was not hot (temperature) enough. I'm definitely excited to come back and try more.

Yelp
The tall Thai man who appears to be the owner definitely knows how to make a hungry man happy. Great ambience and food recommendations. Will came back!

Yelp
Duck larb was our choice to begin the meal. It was was prepared perfectly, sparkling with flavor. We were sure that Oakland had a great new Thai restaurant. But our main dish, the Khao Soi, was disappointing. It was not very flavorful, and the flavors it did have weren't so pleasing. Maybe we'll try it again some time since the larb was so good.

Yelp
The food service and the ambiance is great! I haven't found anything on the menu that I did not like. Yesterday, I had grilled chicken garlic rice and salad. Yummy! Take a visit you won't regret it.

Yelp
Great food and attentive service. Very nice people. Updated decor and they did get their wine and beer license, even though the website wasn't updated about it.

Yelp
Lots of dishes I recognize are on the menu, and many I don't. I enjoyed my food, the service and the ambiance, well lit, comfy chairs. I will return to try something new. It's a casual neighborhood restaurant. Good portions, doggy bag for me. My guests loved their salad and pad thai. I'm giving it a 5 rating because i will definitely return and I'm looking forward to returning.

Yelp
Incredible food and very kind staff all bundled into a cute little restaurant. Dishes are plated beautifully, and portions are fair/large for the price. Gluten free dishes are marked on the menu, and many can be made gluten free with small changes. It was comforting to hear the waitress understand how even sharing the same fryer oil can lead to cross contamination - celiacs should feel comfortable eating here.

Yelp
Checked this new place out with my girlfriend because the reviews and food pics seemed so good--and it did not disappoint! The Thai iced tea was creamy despite being dairy free, and all the curries were rich and heavenly. Roti was both crisp and soft. The massuman short rib was so fall-off-the bone soft. The owner was super nice and excited too as she took our order and served us. The restaurant was fairly empty when we got there, but we started fairly late for lunch. Still, more folks should check this place out!

Yelp
Super friendly people n delicious food. They totally took care of me n my guests for my birthday celebration in December 2024. The whole experience was fabulous, from planning the menu to letting me bring in a big cake for dessert. Highly recommend.

Yelp
There are plenty of Thai restaurants in the area, but Nua is comparable to restaurants we ate at in Thailand. Seriously. We had the Tom Kha soup and I didn't think it was too sweet, just wonderfully flavorful. We also shared the deep fried tofu with tamarind sauce, which I thought was fine and my husband loved. That was the spiciest dish we had. We shared a green curry, which was just as delicious as the soup. We look forward to coming back, hopefully with more people, so that we can sample more dishes. The owner told us that vegetarians and vegans can order anything on the menu, and get a vegetarian/vegan version, which is great. This is clearly our favorite Thai restaurant in the area, and only minutes from our house. My only complaint is that the restaurant was chilly enough that I had to keep my jacket on.

Yelp
Not sure why people were raving about this place on Reddit. Food was mediocre at best and we also found a bug in our food

Yelp
Incredible! We were crushed when the Thai place that was here before closed for remodeling and never reopened. The food and value was tremendous. But but but what a blessing in disguise! Nua is even better. The food and value are incredible. We've been amazed with every dish so far.
