My Dad had been pumping this place up to me for months, so when we went for dinner last night I had my expectations set a little high.
Since it was nice out, and we had some high-risk members in our group, we decided to take advantage of their al fresco dining. It has the ambiance of a high way. The noise was at times deafening as trucks and cars whizzed by honking.
Food wise, the majority was good and enjoyed, but there were some major missteps. The customer service helped remedy the situations, so overall the rating is a 3.5.
Pla-Tu took a very, let's say, artistic approach in coursing out the meal. We ordered the bang bang shrimp, shrimp shumai, kanisu, and a couple of rolls to share, followed by the red chicken curry and pad Thai for dinner. The curry and pad Thai came out first, along with the bang bang shrimp. This was a little disappointing. The server explained that the sushi takes much longer, but we would have been fine waiting for the sushi and having the hot mains later, had we been given the option.
One person in our party can not handle any spice, and typically pad thai has no heat. Well, surprise! This pad thai was fairly spicy, much to the shock of my father's lady friend. She was miserable for a solid 10 minutes. I love spice, so it didn't bother me too much, but it was very prominent. Pla-Tu needs to mention that there's spice in the pad Thai on the menu (like their other spicy dishes) or have the server note it.
When the sushi finally came out, it was pretty good. I ordered the Miami White and the Tuna Mango. Tuna Mango was more popular but I enjoyed both. The shrimp shumai never arrived after nearly an hour, so we cancelled them.
Saving the best for last, we ordered the Thai donuts. You can never go wrong with Thai donuts, or so I thought. Pla-Tu managed to, twice. They came out looking like pretty flowers. We were excited to dive in but as soon as we tore the first batch apart, they were raw in the center. Second batch was better, but there was still raw dough in parts. In my lengthy Thai donut career I have never had this happen. I would recommend they skip the artistry and cook them as smaller pieces, or like donuts like they used to, or lower the fry oil temperature to give them more time. I think they're too big and/or cooking too fast on the outside. The server took them and the non-existent shumai off the bill.
All in all, I'd like to think this was not the best representation of Pla-Tu. We may give it a second go as my Dad swears it's much better usually. To be continued!
