5 Best Day Trips From Montreal: Québec City, Ottawa, the Eastern Townships, Mont Tremblant, and Hudson | Condé Nast Traveler

"This giant expanse of green grass, the site of a 1759 battle, is where anyone who calls contemporary Quebec City home can relax and have fun. The view of the St. Lawrence River and the city of Lévis is really something to behold. Kids will love rolling down the hill behind the Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec, while adults have miles and miles of parkland (242 acres, if you count the surrounding Battlefields Park) and paths to stroll." - Todd Plummer, Isa Tousignant

I went in late December and it has just snowed I felt like I was in a snow globe I loved it so much I bet it is equally as pretty in the spring or summer time! I do wish thought it was brighter outside as the sun was setting! I did not get to the museum part though I would have liked too!

Wow! Easily one of the most beautiful parks I’ve ever visited. It’s very well-maintained, exquisite views, rolling hills, just lovely. There are also some trails. In the middle of the park there is a theater and a coffee shop that I recommend visiting and enjoying the view. There are also picnic tables throughout. Every time we went it was breezy and so relaxing. The stairs up are no joke. Many different experiences within this marvelous park.

Historic battlefield turned into a massive park. Saw lots of runners, walkers, and kids sledding down the hills. Some of the history is still preserved over the fields.

This place is great for relaxation. Perhaps residents of this area come here for walks and picnics. But this is part of Canadian history, and such an interesting one. And the picturesque landscapes and views of the river and city are remembered forever. There are many paid parking lots for cars, and the price is not high.

My favorite spot in Quebec city! Great place to go for a run or picnic. A vast area consisting of parks, museums, easy trails, viewpoints, etc. that was once a battlefield. Not a lot of opportunities to read up on the history of the city, but for a fee, visitors get a tour of the citadel, which is otherwise restricted to public.

Québec City’s largest urban park—and the site of the famous Battle of the Plains of Abraham—is just across the street. Outside the city walls, to the west of the Citadel, stretches the green expanse known as the Plains of Abraham [also known as Battlefields Park (Parc des Champs-de-Bataille)], where in 1759 the British, led by General Wolfe, fought the French under Montcalm and won. The Battle of Québec (the pivotal moment of the French and Indian War when the French were forced to cede New France to Great Britain) took place here. The park is also home to the remains of two Martello towers, later additions to Québec's fortifications. Begun in the late 1930s, the Joan of Arc Garden designed by Louis Perron has a fabulous display of flowers from spring until fall. it is the perfect place to enjoy some fresh air. While you're sure to see a few historical elements (like the occasional ornamental cannon and defensive towers known as Martello Tower), make sure to pay specific attention to the manicured gardens – don't miss the stunning Joan of Arc Garden – and the riverfront vistas. It’s lovely to see this field on cloudy days. benches are there near Martello Towers, have a seat and admire the beauty of St Lawerence River Battlefields Park is an outdoor recreational site, right in the heart of the city! In the winter, you can go cross-country skiing or snowshoeing along the groomed trails or go skating on the ice ring. In the summer, the park becomes a popular picnic area.

Even if you're not a history buff, this is a great place to visit! Learn a little bit about how the English victory during an established French presence would shape Canada into what it looks like today. Lots of walking, but didn't remember seeing bathrooms around where we were. You'll be rewarded with a stunning view of the water/city after touring near the fort.

Yelp
it might be a hidden gem for you- one of the most scenic panoramic views of the region and notable landmarks, such as the Château Frontenac, Dufferin Terrace, and St. Lawrence River. There are two ways to get to Pierre-Dugua-De Mons Terrace. The first is to walk across Dufferin Terrace to the end of the wooden slide runs. The second is to walk up from Avenue Saint-Denis. Any photo you take at the terrace, no matter the season or the time of day, would be as pretty as a postcard. Go for a stroll along the walls of the Citadel located next to the terrace. The view here encompasses many of Quebec's famous sites: On the left, there is the eminent Chateau Frontenac, a luxury hotel built to attract visitors from around the world; in the center, there is the historic Quebec old town, a UNESCO world heritage site; and on the right is the St Lawrence river, dominating the landscape and dotted with the occasional cruise ship to bring people from far-flung lands into the city.

Yelp
Costumed tour guides aren't something I regularly encounter but here in French Canada that pattern changed. Specifically, here at the Plains of Abraham Museum, that really changed. It's here that a costumed shuttle driver/actress will assume a role as she drives through the Plains, stopping to present information in a very amusing and very entertaining manner. It's the best part of the museum and I recommend it as the first thing you do after entering. By starting with the shuttle you don't have to try and get your information from the oh-so-boring film but definitely enjoy the floor that's on. It's got another costumed actress who'll help you with the interactive exhibits which look like they're for kids but proved fun for me too. A third costumed actor appeared on another floor to help and encourage one to try on the uniform of those who went into battle. Go for it and take a photo. The uniforms weighed a ton. A ground floor sculpture exhibit completed my enjoyment of this place after I'd exhausted my interest in everything related to the battle of the Plains of Abraham. The boring film and the floor of artifacts and battle information proved unnecessary. There's a lot to enjoy here but kick it off the right way: start with the shuttle ride.

Yelp
This is now a large expanse of greenery enjoyed as a park by Quebecers. It's sort of Quebec City's "Central Park" and is the site of a historic battlefield between the French and the English. It's named after Abraham Martin, an early French settler. It sits along the St Lawrence River and you can enjoy the views from here.

Yelp
The plains are former military grounds and the site of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham. Now it is used as a park. It's a nice place for a stroll or picnic.

Yelp
Many years ago, when I used to live with a Quebecois family in Ste Foy, I used to walk past the Plains of Abraham all the time on my way to the Old City. It's such a beautiful green space, on one side it's full of restaurants and beautiful homes, on the other side its quiet with views of the St Lawrence river...in the middle, a great place for picnics, walks, relaxing.... Some history on this park......In 1908 the National Battlefields Commission in Quebec was tasked with creating a large city park on the former military grounds spanning the Plains of Abraham between Grande Allée and the cliff overlooking the St. Lawrence River. The name "Plains of Abraham" is believed to date back from 1635 to 1667 as a result of a section of the plains belonging to a man named Abraham Martin. The same Abraham took a path--the present-day Côte d'Abraham--to lead his cows down to drink at the river. The Plains of Abraham--spans 103 hectares (1 km2). Every season tens of thousands of visitors flock to this immense park in search of relaxation and recreation. In the summer large-scale events and concerts are presented on the green space, while in the winter, activities like cross-country skiing, sliding, and snowshoeing are popular.....with the Winter Carnival holding its main events here as well. Québec City has a "Central Park", just outside the Old City walls, a magnificent park that hosts all kinds of activities and brings pleasure to residents and tourists.

Yelp
The Plains of Abraham is a historic area within the Battlefields Park in Quebec City. The land is the site of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, which took place on September 13, 1759, but hundreds of actress of the fields became used for grazing, housing, and industry. My husband is a history buff, so we needed to see this when we were in Quebec. You are not aloud to tour on your own, and need to go on a guided tour. I found the tours too large in number, and it was hard to get to the front to hear. However, it is very interesting, and you get to go through some of the barracks and tunnels on the plains. It is also beautiful Great views above of Quebec City. The price was reasonable as well, and I think that if you are slightly interested in history or Quebec this is a good starting place to learn.

Yelp
Historic battlefields park. The French and British battled it out here. A deciding moment in the history of creation of modern Canada. A local Central Park. Good for walking exercise when you have been poutine on pounds.

Yelp
2017 Review 84/100 The park area is nice for a walk. We didn't visit the museum and a portion of the area was under constuction so there was a large chunk we couldn't access. But it was pretty overall. Would be a great location for a picnic.

Yelp
This was such a peaceful and well kept park. The greenery is amazing and the air smells so clean. I would come here everyday if I could.

Yelp
Beautiful, cold, historical place where Canada exited French rule. The active fort was nice, but the docent was misinformed about many of the facts: Zombie soldiers during WW2 and the lack of identification to mother France by the majority of French speaking soldiers during both world wars. The historical museum is wonderful.

Yelp
I'm surpised that nobody has written a review on this beautiful park in Quebec City. Even though my fiance did did not have a lot of time to spend in this park, we were able to spend some time lounging and driving around. What we did see of this park, we were impressed. It is big, clean, and peaceful place on the banks of the St. Laurent Waterway. We saw other people walking, jogging, biking, roller blading, and picnicing. After a long day of walking around town, it was a nice place to just sit and relax. I definitely recommend checking out this place if you are visiting Quebec City.

Yelp
They've definitely slacked off on maintenance over the last couple years here. The rollerblading trail is downright dangerous - paint and signage indicating its purpose is faded and insufficient, and people are constantly walking on it, creating hazardous conditions for skaters and walkers alike.

Yelp
Nice museum and bus ride tour visiting the plains of Abraham or Battlefield Park (depending on who you talk to). This is where the French and British fought in the 1700's. It is a very nice park! They have dozens of cannons from the past 300 years lined up. The muesum also had a very entertaining lesson on the area. They had a sale $12 per adult $8 per kid for the Museum, bus ride and tour of a tower (which we skipped).

Yelp
The museum was good, but the 3-D movie was dreadful - it was about some very boring battles. I nearly fell asleep.
