"Pläj was closed for much of the pandemic after a short-lived run with takeout, but as of July 9 the longest-standing Scandinavian restaurant in San Francisco has reopened for dinner service. Pläj returns with a fresh summer menu from chef Roberth Sundell, new decor in the dining room, and as always, one of the best selections of Aquavit in SF." - Becky Duffett

ok. Let me please preface this review with most people who know me know that I don't easily give out 5 stars. But let me tell you, if there was a 6th star, this places deserves it. NOMA esque type Scandinavian cuisine. Every plate was FANTASTIC! Gravlax and Herring were my favorite. But honestly, we had 5 small plates and a dessert and they were all GREAT! I almost want to give this place a 1 star so that people don't go crowd it out. ;p Trust me, come check it out and you won't be disappointed. For added bar entertainment go on Wednesday to Saturday night to hang out with Jason. ;) Came back again for another great food experience. What a hidden gem of a place.

Excellent Scandinavian food in this small boutique hotel restaurant. Enter through hotel front and walk all the way back to a really dark, no windows at all, cave like restaurant. This is the perfect place for that secret rendezvous because no one can see you inside. You can whisper all sorts of sweet nothings to your date or share top secret intel with the CIA and no one will ever know. But let’s talk about the food. Menu has three options. A small plate, medium plate and then the main entree. We ordered one of each and shared between the two of us. Started with kohlrabi and beet with water cress salad. Then a pickled herring plate with knacke brot, cheese, onions, plus more. Main was meatballs and mashed potato. Each dish was excellent and really brought out Scandinavian flavors with dill and lingonberry. For desert they had quite a few options. Hard to choose but tried the chiffon cake with marzipan topping. Was served in a jar and It was delicious! Service was great. I appreciated them asking if we had show tickets and needed to leave by a certain time. Good deal.

Tucked away at the Inn @ the Opera, Pläj is an interesting place. The food is clean and portions are enough to be filling without being overly so. It’s a classier establishment, so jeans and t-shirts would feel out of place here - try something a little nicer. Definitely try the Gioia Burrata and the Swedish Meatballs. Staff is knowledgeable about the menu and service is good. It is a good stop before catching a show at the Opera or at the Orpheum down the street.

Food with character! Decor is sophisticated but cozy. Would highly recommend the white asparagus. An excellent venue right before the opera (which is within walking distance). Cocktails were fantastic, and served by a gentleman who looked remarkably like Steve Jobs.

Spectacular meal. Drinks were delicious and all the food did a great job of introducing a new flavor. Will definitely be back

Great place for food and drinks. There has been clear effort to elevate the quality of the food over more standard fare with attention to plating. Tried 5 dishes and all tasted great.

Gnoccis I tried were seasonal. I hope they keep this delicious dish! It's vegetarian friendly. Also, try the Fresh Baked Bread with caramelized butter and leek, the seasonal summer salad, and the Råraka & *Caviar: potato røsti, skagen cream, whitefish caviar. As a dessert, you can't miss out the Rhubarb Strawberry Pie: bay leaf ice cream!
