The Best Coffee Shops in Ottawa and Gatineau | Eater Montreal

"Nestled in a historic courtyard in the Byward Market, Planet Coffee has been around for over twenty-five years. An espresso — and an espresso brownie — might be just the lift you need after a visit to the National Gallery or a stroll around Major’s Hill Park, both just minutes away by foot." - Ivy Lerner-Frank

Great location, but everything else is just alright. I’ve been coming here for years because of the location and that’s probably what makes it popular. Coffee was fine. Avocado toast was overpriced for what it was.

We came here while we vacationed in Ottawa for 3 nights in April. I was craving a Nainimo Bar and I noticed this was one of the closest places to find a Nainimo Bar. As I walked in, I knew exactly what I wanted, my wife and child figured out what they wanted, then we were off. 3 desserts for $17. That's a decent amount so you'd expect top notch desserts. Well, if you know Nainimo bars, you'll know that it has roughly 3 equal layers of chocolate ganache, custard icing and a crust made up of various delicious ingredients. Well, the one I got, must have been 50% crust, 45% custard and like 5% or less of chocolate ganache. I took pictures to see this. Seems small to some, but it is a pain when you're expecting a great, delicious Nainimo Bar. I wish I could say 1/5 but it was edible of course, just not properly proportioned. 2/5. ⭐⭐

Okay, I’m honestly just shocked. I’ve been here before and ordered coffee, and their small size was never this small. I’m not sure if it’s just the matcha that comes in this tiny cup, but the portion is seriously surprising. Maybe it’s on me for not asking about the sizes beforehand, but for $5.80, I definitely expected a standard small, like the one you get at most coffee shops. The taste is okay but matcha feels kinda diluted, but this serving size is really disappointing. (59 mL sanitizer bottle for reference)

Vegan, gluten free and mainstream treats. Lovely staff. Tables are wobbly outside, yet the atmosphere is worth it

For your own good don’t get any of the pastries, they are all stale and dry like they’ve been out for days. The coffee and matcha were okay like a 6/10

Nice atmosphere outside - lots of tables in the shade. But my cappuccino wasn't amazing. No croissants, but lots of sweets and some sandwiches

If you want some quick bites and coffee at Byward, this is a convenient one but it is a busy place. I feel like the Baristas are all exhausted. The wildberry square is yum!

Very cozy little coffee shop right off of the ByWard market business. The fact it is tucked away surrounded by oldtimey buildings really add to the relaxing atmosphere. The date, rhubarb and the pumpkin square were all delicious. The iced moka was really good and I also recommend the ice tea and the double shot flat white.
