K. C.
Yelp
I've been coming here once a week for about a month now (My "home" gym is uptown on 125th St.), and I've gotta give these guys an extra star. Here are four reasons why:
1) newer treadmills, ellipticals, and bikes - Set the tension on one recumbent or elliptical, use it, then hop on the one right next to it (or a couple machines over) and with the same settings and you'll feel the same resistance. The same can't be said at 125th. Of course, how late the model of a machine is shouldn't be used as an excuse, imo; I'm under the assumption that the "clunkers" at 125th can get more frequent tune-ups.
2) televisions on each treadmill, elliptical, and bike with more channels than the tvs mounted above the machines at 125th - It's like Pimp My Ride here. I'm watching all sorts of guilty pleasures during my work out ('member Charmed? Canal Street's got you.)
3) bigger, cleaner showers - Seriously, they're more than twice the size of the ones at 125th; and while the 125th has one or two more showers than they have here, I can't always get past the clogged drains at 125th to give thanks for them. And, admittedly, my favorite shower here at Canal St has varying water pressure due to the toilet flushing, but my preference is for clear drains, so the occasional drop in water pressure doesn't bother me.
4) The staff are on their j-o-b, no matter where they are in the gym...and they greet and thank before you do (and respond if you speak first), which isn't always the case at 125th. I haven't seen or heard any arguing among staff here at Canal St either; I unfortunately can't unsee the time there were two 125th St staffers on the second floor arguing in plain view of everyone (Seriously, one of them was pointing their finger at the other...with their arm outstretched. These are two adults, y'all. Grown folk. #Drama4YoMama #HandleThatScandal). Sorry, and it's not THAT big of a deal, but no matter what position I've held - minimum wage or salaried, paid or volunteer - I was mentored to not bring my personal psychology to work, especially if it's negative; the employees here at Canal St, clearly have too, and they show it. The two on duty when I visit this location are the type you want to learn more about to see if you can "steal" them from Planet Fitness.
I haven't checked the type of weight machines they have here because I don't use them at any location. But it's a Planet Fitness, so I don't see how they don't have at least one of each machine that 125th has. There's a TRX area too.
There are fewer tanning beds and massage chairs here, and there's isn't as much space to stretch before/after your workout, but I don't tan or use the chairs, and I've always managed to find enough space to stretch (There's always space for that next to the machine you use.
So I don't HATE my "home" gym at 125th (hey, I gave 'em three stars), but I'm glad I have a good excuse to use this one weekly; otherwise going here for no reason might look like some form of internalized hatred, so...
Yelp needs to implement half stars 'cause this place is more like a 4.5. I really enjoy coming here.
