The 25 Best Restaurants in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico | Eater

"This buffet-style spot is hidden deep among the many enchanting andadores (staircases) in Vallarta’s Centro neighborhood. The restaurant specialized in old school vegetarian food way before the words “plant-based” or “vegan” were heard around town. The place is open all day, and staff switch out buffet items around lunchtime, except for the legendary, flagship black beans. For breakfast, look for chilaquiles; birria made with house-made soy strips; all-you-can-drink green juice; and pancakes filled with sweet papaya, puffed amaranth, and cajeta (goat milk caramel). For lunch or dinner, depending on the day of the week, you’ll find potato-stuffed chiles rellenos, pumpkin seed albondigas, sweet potato lasagna, and banana bread pudding for dessert." - Paola Briseño-González

Google
Completely yummy restaurant; hole in the wall. Wonderful flavors and variety, all feeling and tasting very healthy. Lots of choices, and over a dozen veggie salad options for making tacos. Also, a fritter, lasagna, and some sort of tofu ‘meat.’ All of it was fabulous and we are planning to go back for the breakfast buffet as well. The ambiance of the restaurant was super bright and inviting as well. All in all, a great experience. Oh and they were able to use our credit card which was helpful.

Google
Such a cute and fun buffet! This spot was great, we made the journey to eat here a few times. Not everything was vegan, but they did offer to make us vegan pancakes while we were there, which were delicious!

Terry S.

Google
Vegetarian, all you can eat (but not waste) place. Absolutely worth it. The staff are super friendly and the food is varied and very tasty. Try it. You will not regret it. Bibi, Alma, Martha y Camila.

Love coming here for lunch. Was new to me about a year ago, but have been on a recent binge stopping in a few times throughout the week. I know there are already a ton for great reviews, but I want to add one more to help anyone still on the fence about trying it out, because it is important to note that I am not vegetarian and love their food. The menu is always new and interesting with deep flavors. Though I may eat too much when I go, I always feel a healthy level of full when I leave. From the great cold salad selections to the soups and main dishes, everything is delicious with distinct and unique flavors. The staff is happy to share the ingredients and let you know which foods also qualify as 100% plant-based and which contain gluten or other allergens. One thing to know is that dessert is by request, so just let a staff member know when you are ready for a sweet treat. Though all the desserts are great, a small slice of the almond-banana cake (when available) is the perfect finish.

Google
Everything was good! I could've used more options. I liked the vegan potato dish with the vegan chorizo. It reminded me of a shepards pie. My nonvegan friend liked it! The scenery was nice and well decorated. I enjoyed the walk from the touristy beach area. Along the way you pass a church and a square..people were dancing to a live band. I felt safe and enjoyed seeing more traditional Mexico.

Google
Well, we really wanted to like this place. But truth be told, the food is just ok. We were pretty disappointed at the quality of the food. Much of it seemed bland and had little flavor. The main entries were probably the better of the selections particularly the ravioli and also the bell pepper dishes. Despite all the different variations of the ceviche, they pretty much tasted the same. The vegetable soup was also ok and the only dish that was hot. Everything else was lukewarm. They had several drinks which were good but we got some tea but all three of the hot water pots had tepid water and the teas wouldn’t steep!! For the price of $225 pesos per person, it was just not close to the value we expected. The atmosphere and service was excellent but it couldn’t make up the the quality of the food.

Google
Simple tasty food. They offered several ceviche’s and aquachiles when we were there. Also had a curry dish, veg meatball soup, baked potatoes and wonderful juices. Cute fun place. It is small. We were hoping for more options. But, it is all you can eat. Price was about $12 USD. They accept cards.

Google
Fantastic food, fresh, flavorful, tons of options, the tortilla was freshly provided. The lady was sooo nice. Bread was amazing too. And their salsas were AMAZING!! Must have for vegetarian and vegetarian-lovers looking for a break from resort food.

Yelp
What a great find this charming little restaurant is(thank you, Yelpers!). The food is hearty and comforting as well as delicious. It's good home cooking made with love. The staff is very kind, everyone is happy. It is a special place.

Yelp
Quiet vegetarian and vegan restaurant with wonderful breakfast buffet. The seating was plentiful and music not too loud. Only one hostess who left us mostly alone, and several cooks constantly creating dishes to replace cold ones. The chilaquiles, poblanos with red peppers and onions in cream sauce, and nopales were my favorite. My husband liked the beans and tofu scramble with tomatoes. The meal was cheap given it was a buffet, too.
google avatar

Lori A.

Yelp
Amazing vegan buffet that rotates selections daily. The food was so flavorful and fresh. Very reasonable pricing too. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
This place is GREAT! It's a breakfast, lunch and dinner VEGAN place. The food is all great! I love it. The pineapple drink is the best in the world -

Yelp
Food is so good whether it's for breakfast or lunch/dinner. Nice family atmosphere. We eat here a lot when we vacation in Puerto Vallarta

Yelp
Excellent food, every time. Excelente comida, siempre. That the food is vegetarian doesn't compromise taste, and the buffet helps give a lot of options. Plus, the staff are so kind. The restaurant is in the Centro, but the restaurant is on a quiet walk street, making it a calm place inside the restaurant.

Yelp
The food is satisfactory, nice location, nice interior, pleasant clientele, if you come right at the start of lunch hour you can have green juice

Yelp
I love a healthy buffet! This place is it. The food was delicious with many options and changes the couple times we went. If I lived there I would go several times a week. They even had dessert, that you need to ask for

Yelp
I always look forward to my walks to Planeta Vegetariano for lunch. The walk back to my Airbnb is even more delightful after enjoying their delicious and diverse selection of food. Every day it's a different list of meals. Don't miss out on the homemade bread tucked away in a little bread box above the salad bar--it's exceptional!
google avatar

Yelp
Okay if you're vegetarian you have not lived until you visited this location. Just look for the beautiful umbrellas up the walking street with the rainbow stairs. They do breakfast for 135 pesos until 1130 and then from noon till 10 PM for 180 pesos. This includes cold drinks hot drinks bread and desserts. It's a Buffet style and everything is good. They really care about the food they're making and from what it appears it's also vegan. I didn't see any type of cheese but I didn't ask for the record. The food is very non-oily which is hard to pull off for the face. But once again I highly recommend this place and they do a nice variety every day I went it was different. I've been there three times during my visit here and would've went more but it's a 25 minute walk from where I live and on this hot day is it's a bit too much. My favorite was the Chile Riano with mashed potatoes and their potato salad. Their staff is super friendly and Luis was my favorite. Their coffee is delicious and the gray another drink. The salad bar is pretty fantastic. Just go you're really love it I wonder why didn't go more. This place has been open since 1990 I believe and Man I wish they had one of these in California or Washington state. But to be honest the last time I had a Buffet like this was at an ashram. This place is winning. Go you'll be really happy you're did!
google avatar

Yelp
Great vegan buffet with plenty of vegetarian options too. Great decor and wall art in the center of Malecon right by zona romantica. Service was busy but the food was great. It's up the stairs and and on the right.
google avatar

Bryan S.

Yelp
Words would do No justice- Come to Puerto Vallarta and enjoy this pleasant place. It is a self serve buffet style. It's authentic. It is delicious. It is what it is and you will have to come find out for yourselves. It is totally a 5 star spot if you are into chilling with the locals and enjoying a good wholesome meal. Viva Mexico!
google avatar

Jennifer N.

Yelp
Big bang for your buck. AYCE vegan food for $7 USD?? I filled up on lots of delicious salads and entrees, also the aqua frescas are really good too. I stumbled upon this place too while wandering the cobblestone streets of PV. Apparently this place is famous!
google avatar

Kyle S.

Yelp
If you're craving something green, this quaint vegan buffet has plenty of delicious options. Everything is 100% vegan; you will find no dairy or animal based products here and that includes the seasonings. They still manage to make everything delicious and you will not leave here hungry! If you're here for dinner make sure to try the vegan chocolate cake. It's as good as any $5 vegan chocolate cupcake you'll get in an upscale place. On a fun side note, their wall murals are whimsical and even a bit snarky (in a good way). You can tell they must have a sense of humor and an artistic touch.
google avatar

Yelp
This place just didn't do it for me. Maybe I caught them on a bad day. I mean it was like a million degrees with 120% humidity. The staff was well meaning but the food just wasn't appealing and was an overall mediocre experience. I would like to visit again just to see if it truly was an off day. With so few vegetarian friendly places around its import to support the ones that are trying and not be too harsh when they miss the mark.

Eric ..

Yelp
Def go back if in PV again. Food was good and the service was excellent. Very friendly staff.

Yelp
We came at 12 which is when the breakfast buffet gets swapped out for the lunch buffet. It's self service and the price is slightly increased for lunch. There were lots of options which were not super special but yummy. My standouts were the pesto pasta, mashed potato cake, sweet potatoes, and the cream of vegetable soup. I left very full but felt healthy since I knew everything was vegan. It's located in a cute area with many photo opportunities.

Suzie B.

Yelp
A little breath of fresh air in what can be a chaotic city. $205 peso is the current price - but worth every penny! Daily a different lunch/dinner selection
google avatar

Yelp
Super delicious, best all-vegan food we've had since coming to PV. Chef was very nice and helpful and the whole place felt really local.

Yelp
Happened upon this hole in the wall on a walk in beautiful PVR. Located in a cute alley way with uplifting wall art (and cute stray cats milling about) this place was a welcome refuge from the afternoon heat. Delicious, light and nutritious food and lovely service. Cash only but worth the trek to find an ATM. Would 100% recommend!

Yelp
To start with I am not a vegetarian and tend to avoid restaurants like this out of a meat eaters principle. Having said that, when i saw this restaurant and the accolades it had received to include a five star average in Yelp I absolutely had to try it. To put it succinctly, I was blown away by the quality of the food and the great flavor that almost every dish had. Where to begin. Well to start with the restaurant interior is brightly decorated with whimsical hand painted wall murals that have a bunch of disney characters in them to include Ariel the mermaid, Mickey Mouse as the sorcerer, Star wars Millennium Falcon, Yoda, Aladdin, Jasmine. Mayan ruins, garden scenes, tropical birds, etc... These murals are very well done and in line with the quality work you see in the Artistic district of Puerto Vallarta that actually adds a lot to the dining experience. Relative to the food itself, it is buffet style where the menu items change daily. On this particular night there were probably 20 items to choose from and included steamed veggies, various salads, salsa, soy in mole, sautéed peppers, guacamole, fruits, a spinach based entree, bean dish, puffed corn and mushroom soup, potato tacos, two different rices, beans... etc. the one constant with all these dishes was the flavor which was just outstanding. Throw in the low cost of just $125 pesos ($6 USD) and this is a deal that is too hard to pass up, on many fronts in this case. Overall, a wonderful meal at an amazing price. Whether you are a vegetarian or not, this is one place you need to work into your Puerto Vallarta dining schedule when you are in this area. You will absolutely not be disappointed. Five stars.....

Yelp
I think I was misled by the high reviews and had high expectations. It is a good place- but an average place. It is a mom and pop abode with beautiful fanciful wall decor and a small buffet style set up. The food was okay. The staff were so sweet and we stayed because there aren't too many vegetarian friendly places in the area. And we were hungry after walking 15 min to get to this place. Glad we did. Great value if you are starving. But would not go out of my way to eat here.
google avatar

Jack G.

Yelp
Awesome cozy vegetarian restaurant with tasty food and a wide buffet selection. One (very moderate) price for a great self-serve buffet meal. The menu changes daily. Very friendly staff. I plan to return frequently.

Joel B.

Yelp
Went here for lunch muy delicious !! Highly recommend and the chef gave us banana cake for desert !!

Yelp
When searching for Vegan eats in PV, there are several options. Unfortunately those options seem to be spread throughout the city. If you're relying on public transport, or walking in the scorching heat, you'll be thankful that delicious, reliably Vegan food can be found at Planeta every morning, noon, and night. They offer a well stocked buffet for slightly more than the other place. The food however seems to be of better quality over all. They do a better job flavoring their mock meats and seem to run through food more quickly, translating into fresher items on the buffet line. I also noticed when items are fried, they seem to taste better here as well. I pretty much stuck to a baked tortilla topped with their black beans, faux meat item of the day, veggies and plenty of their muy picante salsa. This kept me full for much of the day if eaten for lunch or early dinner. The frijoles are not as good as Mary makes but they are not bad at all. The rice here is excellent as well. The only area where they could have room for improvement is their breakfast. Especially for Vegans. The chilaquiles are done much better here, but the tofu scramble was a soggy mess for some reason. Being able to top it with well seasoned fajitas makes up for that though. They don't have Vegan pancakes by default but they will happily make them upon request. I think it's a matter of milk in the batter. Either way, Mrs. Mary has them beat in this department. All in all, every meal we ate here was pretty much a winner. They even will sell you a to-go meal if you want to take it back to your hotel, which I know you will. The service is genuinely friendly and they know what Vegano means. After a few visits, the lady would run out to be sure to point out the one or two things that were not Vegan. Planeta Vegetariana you saved us from a vacation of guacamole and totopos every day. Muchas gracias!

Yelp
This is a fantastic find for vegetarians, vegans and everyone else. Really wonderful food creatively prepared, with great variety from day to day. We've tried it for dinner and breakfast both and been completely satisfied. Cute location and decor, and warm and friendly staff. It's a gem!

Yelp
We'd walked past Planeta Vegetariano a few times and then after reading the reviews decided to give them a try. Wow! It is now on our regular rotation of must do restaurants. Another plus is that they are open in May when many restaurants are shutting down for the slow summer months. Every food item was good. The hot food and cold salads. It was 125pesos for lunch. It was not busy at lunch but for breakfast on a Sunday (it is near the church) the place was packed with what looked like locals and non tourists. They did not have a dessert area, but will bring one out if you "ask" if there is dessert. It was a kind of carrot cake, good dessert. They had great soy arracha which was much, much better than actual meat which is usually a lower quality cut of very chewy meat. Poblano stuffed with mashed potatoes was very good.

Yelp
Our favorite vegetarian restaurant in all of Jalisco, maybe all of Mexico! What a special place. Support these people and the amazing plant based food they have been serving for decades!
google avatar

Mars B.

Yelp
This spot is beautiful and totally worth it! The buffet price, even tho it's ur only option, is great for all you can eat; the food was delicious, diverse, and vegetarian! The ambiance of the place is pleasant, lovely, and relaxing--I'm certainly eating here more than twice :)

Sirenna H.

Yelp
Yes, please!!! Vegan Oregonian searching for something fresh and delicious. Our bellhop told us about this place when I asked about veg/vegan options and it did not disappoint. Traveling with two teenage picky eaters and a meat eater can be challenging at times. We went here out of pity for me having a more restrictive diet and being tired of beans (ugh, most likely with lard) and risking the salads. Between smoothies, a tuna sandwich, capris salad and bruschetta the pity turned into happy bellies for all! So much so, the teenagers went back for more on their own. You will find great selections for everyone and the portions are more than I ever expected. The place was very clean, our newly hired waiter was delightful, and the bathrooms are pretty cool. Definitely a spot I would rerun to when returning to Puerto Vallarta.
google avatar

JP H.

Yelp
Great tasting food, spectacular flavors and amazing service. My vegan friend totally enjoyed her plate as well.
google avatar

Melanya M.

Yelp
This is one of the best and most authentic Mexican vegetarian food. The owner was very welcoming and telling what exactly are they serving in the menu. The food was more of a buffet styled. The fresh made beverages were good. They prefer to use pesos so please make sure you have that ready. They do not accept Apple/Google pay or credit cards.
google avatar

Mandy H.

Yelp
I love this place. I miss this place. First stop when I come back to PV. Yum highly recommend
google avatar

Tom C.

Yelp
Our go-to spot in Puerto Vallarta for homemade vegan food. A great selection of salads and fruits from the cold bar and wonderful local foods from the hot bar. All you can eat for about the equivalent of $8 US.
google avatar

Walter G.

Yelp
Just average flavor food, ok selection It's buffet style and very inexpensive Blah blah blah
google avatar

Matt V.

Yelp
If you get tired of meat/tortilla, this is your place. The food is tasty, the service is wonderfully sweet. I swear, I just wanted to give the lady a hug before I left! I felt like she was my Mexican Abuelita feeding me. The location may be a little off the beaten path, but so is the concept. It's a salad bar, a hot food bar and fresh baked desserts. Price is totally fair too! Give it a go!
google avatar

Oren P.

Yelp
As others have said, you don't even need to be a vegetarian to enjoy this place - serving a changing buffet of various tasty, nutritious vegetarian food, beverages, and even deserts. This place is popular with locals and the atmosphere is very pleasant - as also are the people working here. You can eat and drink as much as you desire for the same low price; all they ask is that you don't take more than you can and will actually eat or drink. The people who come here to eat tend to be knowledgeable about many things and open to interacting with others who might express interest in whatever they might be talking about (with each other or the people working here so feel free to join in).

Yelp
When we planned our trip to PVR, we were leery due to our vegan lifestyle. This place is a god send. We stayed at an all inclusive and ended up coming here every day instead. Great food, lots of variety, switches up every day, and close to the malecón. Cannot recommend this place any higher.
google avatar

Dayana E.

Yelp
Very vegan friendly! Every day, the menu items are different and it's buffet style. Beans, Rice, soyfritas, dairy -free cream of vegetable soup, various vegetables, veggie ceviche.. and more they had on the night we went. They even had oat milk to offer. The art work on the walls are super cute too, all azctec style and Disney characters mixed in. We grabbed vegan pumpkin pie for dessert as well. Will be coming back.
google avatar

Andrea A.

Yelp
This place is larger inside than I thought it would be and food far exceeded my expectations. The value for the money is excellent! They have some typical vegetarian/vegan fare like fruit or salad, but they change out the hot food and some of the other cold items daily. You can see the menus if you follow them on Facebook. I went with my family, all carnivores, and they were all full and happy afterward. My personal favorites - garbanzo/veggie fritters, macaroni salad, potato salad, carrot cake - but really everything was good! We want to go back for breakfast to try the vegan pancakes and chilaquiles. I have heard both are delicious! The service was also great and the owner was so nice. highly recommend supporting this local business!
google avatar

Nicole A.

Yelp
I have a list of must-haves - this place is on it. My friends didn't realize they were eating at a vegetarian restaurant until after our dinner (: The food is prepared and cooked perfectly every time I visit. They have several options for variety, they even have two to three different agua frescas to choose from. The staff are incredibly nice and helpful

Dil A.

Yelp
Nice little spot. Great food. Great service. It is a buffet with limited items but is great
google avatar

Michael G.

Yelp
We went to Planeta Vegetariano last night (1/25/20) and had an incredible experience. This gem is a small establishment with limited seating and incredible place any based foods. Think of being invited to your friends house, because this is the same feeling you have after you leave. Simple concept; self serve vegetarian buffet for a reasonable price. The woman working were so friendly, too! Don't think twice, come, dine and be happy! The soya asada was amazing!!!!!
google avatar

Sohum D.

Yelp
This place was a godsend after eating terrible resort food. There were so many good things to say about this restaurant, starting with the food. The buffet food was delicious and if there was anything we wanted that was not in the buffet, Noah, the chef/owner, would make it happily. There are few places in the world where you find a chef that is so passionate about his food, that has had eclectic experiences, that cares less about money (prices are dirt cheap) and more about making his patrons happy. And when you do find these places, they're more often a hole in the wall that only the locals know about. This was that place Other great things about this place: the price, the artwork, the city center location, Noah's stories, the good karma vibe, and inevitably, the smiles on the people you eat with. Can't say enough good stuff about this place. Here's a pic.
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
The best vegan food I've ever eaten in such a cute, Mexican-flared location. Very reasonable and lovely people, both servers and fellow diners
google avatar

Matt G.

Yelp
Outstanding vegan food. Buffet style. Staff was muy Felix and helpful. Muy bonita atmosphere. We are headed back for breakfast.
google avatar

Nils H.

Yelp
I just love this place! Every time I come to PV I go there. The owner is a spiritual guy who shares his veggie life. The buffer has nice variety. Desserts tend to be on the dry side. Drinks are nice
google avatar

Bryan S.

Yelp
I rare vegetarian gem in Mexico. I have eaten here several times. GOOD vegetarian food is rare in Mexico. This place is the exception 10/10

Blanca T.

Yelp
Excelente! Great place, quiet, friendly staff. Yummy salads, pozole and dessert. I recommend it.
