Pasadena Wants to Test Face-Scanning System That Allows You to Pay for Meals | Eater LA

"This Long Beach plant-based fast-food outlet is using a facial-recognition payment pilot where customers register with a selfie, add funds through a credit card or checking account, and complete pickup by looking into a kiosk while a cashier authorizes and hands over the order. The system is presented as a contactless alternative to limit interactions during COVID-19, but observers have raised concerns about inherent racial bias in facial-recognition technology and potential privacy and data-sharing issues. The rollout is managed by a Pasadena-based tech group and began this week." - Mona Holmes

A New Vegan Drive Thru Fast Food Restaurant Debuts in Long Beach | Eater LA

"Planned as a 2,100-square-foot restaurant in the former University Burgers space at Clark and Pacific Coast Highway, the lease has been signed and construction is underway. Leadership views the market as ideal for the concept, and the site is being developed to include drive-thru service as part of a long-term strategy to expand into car-oriented locations." - Mona Holmes

The food here was truly fantastic and had an amazing taste—it's definitely worth coming for the kitchen alone. Unfortunately, the service was inconsistent; I only had one genuinely friendly worker experience, which was a letdown. I hope the general staff friendliness improves to match the quality of the cuisine.

We ordered the Big Zac Burger, the Bacon Cheeseburger, fries, and drinks — and every bite was outstanding. The Big Zac nails that nostalgic fast-food flavor with double patties, melty vegan cheese, crisp lettuce, and their special sauce on a sesame bun. The Bacon Cheeseburger was just as impressive, stacked high with smoky vegan bacon, gooey cheese, and all the fixings — hearty, flavorful, and completely plant-based. The fries were hot and crispy, and everything came out fast and fresh. What makes Plant Power Fast Food in Long Beach so special is how indulgent yet guilt-free it feels — all the comfort food classics, but 100% vegan. The space is clean and welcoming, and the team is friendly and fast. Whether you’re plant-based or just curious, this spot proves you don’t need meat or dairy to enjoy real-deal fast food. 🌱🍔🍟

Google
PlantPower In Long Beach, serving up amazing classic fast food. The shakes are top notch. Always would recommend to anyone! Sometimes the textures can be a little one dimensional but it’s usually because they add in too much sauce. If you’re not a bit sauce lover ask for it on the side!

Google
UGH this place is fantastic. Everything I’ve tried from them has been delicious and flavorful, from the burgers, to the chicken items. Today I tried their breakfast for the first time and holy moly the bagel sandwich and original coldbrew was everything I hoped it would be. So comforting. Love the convenience of the drive thru, the outdoor seating area also is super cute. With all the vegan places that keep shutting down, let’s please keep this one (and all the other bangers) open 🥲❤️

Google
Foods delicious! The building is so cool too! I love the wrap around drive-thru- random but fun/cool addition .

Google
Love this place so much, friendly staff and fantastic food. everyone can find something they want to eat here, and it doesnt take like vegan food stereotypes. its ACTUALLY good and doesn’t make you miss non-vegan food! Price is a little steep but i still justify it

Google
Even though I'm not Vegan the food here is tasty, especially the Breakfast Burrito and the Big Zac. Please use the app to get points the prices are more then typical but the food is always fresh at least. The atmosphere is refreshing with plenty of wood and living plants decorating the dining area and if it's comfortable outside, eat near the mini pound! I've never seen it at max capacity visiting it the past 8 years so there is plenty of fresh air and it is easy to have a conversation.

Google
This has become my favorite fast food restaurant. My husband and daughter love it, too. We're not even vegan. I even got my sister into it, and she can't get enough of the blueberry soda. 😋

Yelp
Short review: 3.5. Rounded up cuz burgers were legitimately pretty good. Burgers (again) were good. Not super memorable, crispy chicken wasn't super crisp, but tasty nonetheless. Fries were ok. Soggy, salted, and thin. If you like that type, boy are these for you. Strange, tiny parking lot, weird drive-thru, and far menu. Hard to see. Kind of pricey.

Yelp
This place is one of my go to. My fav is the Caesar wrap with fried plant chicken It's definitely filling and it's delish I'm not a fan about the iconic burger or the burgers which use beyond meat. I like the Nashville that's tasty As
google avatar

Anita S.

Yelp
Ordered the Nashville spicy chicken sandwich. The crunch and spice were perfect and matched with the slaw and sauce, easily my favorite "chicken" sandwich. It can be a challenge to find good plant based food... this place is bomb. I'm so glad Plant Power is in Long Beach. I highly recommend.

Yelp
I absolutely love plant power. It's so nice to have a vegan fast food go to. :) I love the holy guacamole burger with a veggie patty instead of impossible patty. The iconic fries are delicious. The breakfast sandwiches are filling and so good. I love the Caesar salad and the chocolate shake. Anything I've had here is great. The restaurants I've been to have a good vibe and are clean, and the service is quick. The only negative is there should be more locations everywhere. Definitely support this business if you can. I would love to see plant power everywhere instead of McDonald's.

Yelp
Foods awesome, service is kind and fast, it's nice inside. Love this place we keep coming back!

Yelp
We are here eating the Big Zac and other delicious food. Super yummy! The bathrooms could use and cleaning though.

Yelp
Think in-n-out, but vegan. Was pleasantly surprised to see a variety of burgers on the menu, and 2 patty options. I went with the iconic burger with the hippie patty which was made of black beans, cashews, and some kind of grain. Everything was vegan, including the sauce and cheese, which was a great considering my previous vegan cheese experiences were less than stellar. Items are pricier than your standard burger joint, but it feels like you're paying for quality. There's very little in person interaction, so I can't say anything about the service. Love that they have a drive thru though!
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
Had Plant Power's California burrito tonight for the first time. Talk about a flavor and texture treat. This has to be my favorite version. From the guacamole, which is tasty, to the 'carne asada' -- everything satisfies. Just enough fries to enhance, but not overwhelm. Each element plays a palate-pleasing part. I do eat meat, but I am not a vegetarian/vegan snob; good food is good food. This has become a new-to-me California burrito discovery (plant-based version). We're both sated and full (the burritos were nicely chubby). Highly recommended.

Yelp
Clean, friendly staff. Love their birthday reward. I always get a shake. They are the best!!

Yelp
Amazing people and service! Relaxing ambiance and good seating. Delicious fast food... but what fast food isn't delicious? If you're looking for a "better" option than Carl's Jr. or something similar... then the non-meat option that Plant Power offers maybe a good option.
google avatar

Colleen R.

Yelp
Great variety of options on the menu and it is all vegan everything. The fries are addicting and they have organic sodas, oat milk shakes and yerba matte. What is there to not love? A little pricey but it's convenient and healthier than other fast food options. The staff are very friendly and service is always on point.
google avatar

Ananya N.

Yelp
Love this place for vegan fast food! It's like in n out but elevated and still satisfies that craving! Ives never dined in but even my short experiences with staff at the drive through window has all been good :)
google avatar

Ernest T.

Yelp
It's very good food. The only intimidating part is getting there and parking. Staff was friendly, too.

Yelp
I decided to go out of my way to this restaurant because I was hungry for fast food; however, when I arrived at the drive-thru, the individual who was taking my order had a nasty attitude. I asked several inquiries regarding the menu. They didn't really answer my questions, so I changed my order back when they told me that it came with coleslaw. I told them I didn't like coleslaw and I would just order the Buffalo 66. Then they asked what I wanted on my sides. I told them about the French fries and asked what other sides came with it. After all they said "sides." Looking back, I realized they were being rude and had an attitude for no apparent reason. When I attempted to finalize my order, I informed them that was it. When I didn't receive a response, they ignored me and I kept calling them. So I decided to drive up to the window and give them the benefit of the doubt. When I came to the window, they had a horrible attitude and refused to listen to me when I tried to explain why I drove up since I had not received an answer and assumed they couldn't hear me. They instantly cut me off and asked with an attitude, "What do you want to drink?" When it became clear, I informed them that it's alright. They asked "what!" with an attitude, so I repeated myself and answered, "No thanks, it's alright." They shouted "Fuck you!" as I attempted to drive away. It made no sense for them to have an attitude in the first place. They appeared to be severely psychologically disturbed, with unsolved psychological problems. I mention this because when I called to inquire about the individual's name, I was informed that their name is Madeline. Madeline tried to manipulate me into thinking that I had an attitude when all I did was attempt to place an order. They exhibited behavior that was very odd and lacked rationality. If the owner happens to read this review, please note that the date and time of the incident was September 1, 2025, at 6:26 PM.

Yelp
Food is delicious, service is great, and they have an amazing garden with a pond and fountain and monarch butterflies for outdoor dining. So far I especially love the fries, chicken sandwiches, and bacon, egg and cheese sandwich but there are several items on the menu that I haven't had a chance to try yet. It's a real gem!
google avatar

Yelp
We love this place even though it is a bit out of our way ! Sometimes you just really want fast food and this place checks all the boxes and it's vegan ! We have tried almost everything in the menu . The burgers are delicious the cheese always melted perfectly . The fries are yummy and the ice cream heavily
google avatar

Omar S.

Yelp
The food was ten out of ten ! Supper delicious and would go again for sure. Was helped out by Edgar who was super helpful and friendly ! Much love to this restaurant .

Yelp
Service was fast, you put your order yourself in a big screen so very convenient. Food was good. I ordered their nuggets which were tasty 4/5, wish they were bigger but that's just a preference. I also ordered their lettuce wrap chicken sandwich which was good, the chicken itself was crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside 4/5. I also ordered their cookies and cream shake and horchata peanut butter shake 5/5. The consistency was not too thick nor too runny so it was easy to drink. Oh and did I mention it's all VEGAN!!

Victoria S.

Yelp
Tasty vegan food! Try the hippie patty! Everything on menu so good! Friendly staff. Cute outdoor seating area
google avatar

Olivia B.

Yelp
We really like the food here! It reminds me of a cross between McDonald's AND In-n-Out... just healthier/VEGAN!!! Their iced teas are refreshing too-- my favorite is the peach one! I definitely want to go back and try their breakfast menu. Be prepared to have an order kiosk welcome you instead of an actual person--when dining in! I like that they are open later til 10pm. Small parking lot too but whenever we come it's not that busy due to many going thru drive-thru pick-up!

Selina L.

Yelp
So far my burger was good I have yet to eat my chicken nuggets but am def going back for their deserts and ice cream shakes !
google avatar

Elle S.

Yelp
Pretty good place! Sat in the sunshine next to the fishes w my double cheeseburger & hibiscus iced drink It's self-service so you ring a bell if you need assistance. U pay at the counter & they call ur name. They forgot my pickles! How dare they! I asked for some & they gave me 5 sliced pickles in a little container :) It's great to see plant-based food w a drive thru. Super simple to eat better :)

Yelp
This place is fire!!!! Tastes amazin!!! Love love their burgers. I was vegetarian a month and ordered here twice a week

Czarina G.

Yelp
Came here after working out and it was a great idea, I felt satisfied and not too overwhelming full in other cases when I eat regular fast food. I'm not vegan but I'm always open to trying plant based restaurants! I dined in and it was pretty empty, you order through a kiosk, then wait for your name to be called. No person to person interaction when ordering but if you need assistance they have a bell to ring. I ordered the western burger, which was delicious (my boyfriend preferred that one over his iconic burger). I bun is really soft, the "meat" was seasoned very well and I was surprised about the "bacon", I was a little skeptical because of the look but it tasted just like bacon to me (and it's not greasy like regular bacon). My boyfriend got the iconic burger, I personally liked it a lot, it has all the veggies that I could want in a traditional burger. We also got the iconic fries, it was yummy! Maybe could use a little more salt but the caramelized grilled onions were great! To end the food off, we got dessert as well, we had the cookies and cream snow days (oatmilk based) worth a try if you haven't had a non-dairy based ice cream before. The staff were very friendly too, they were smiling and felt welcomed inside. It's clean, has ceiling fans on so I felt cool, overall great inside. Give it a try, you'll be surprised when you bite into their burgers on how delicious they are.

Josef B.

Yelp
Four stars because I appreciate that every thing is vegan. But didn't appreciate the price of the mini chicken burger that didn't even include a side of fries. Those were extra. Over $30 for 2 burgers and one side of fries. I would rather go to a sit down restaurant with table service for that amount. I did like all the wild flowers growing around the property. Super cute!
google avatar

Roven M.

Yelp
I just don't like the burger patty taste. It feels rubbery and under seasoned. I had to ask for a refund of my burger after the first bite. The iconic fries are better than animal style fries. Fries had a light crisp to it. Had a blueberry/cola fountain drink and that was pretty refreshing. I also want to add on, the cashier was super friendly, and no problem refunding me.
google avatar

Virginia B.

Yelp
I was in the area and was so excited to try this spot since they offer vegan options and they have a gluten free bun for their burgers! I ordered the Iconic Burger (sub gf bun) and the Iconic Fries with a hibiscus drink. The burger was kind of underwhelming which I was bummed about. I felt like my patty could've been cooked on the grill for a little bit longer. The Iconic Fries were my fav! I wouldn't say they're anything extraordinary but they hit the spot. I ordered through the drive through and my piece of advice is to check out the menu online before going since their menu is far away from the drive through and the text on the screen is super small. It felt like I was at my eye doctors office getting an exam. I thought it would also be quick to get my food since I went to the drive through but it took over 5 minutes. I'm not mad at it though since it's an all vegan fast food restaurant and isn't common. I would come back to try their other items!

Yelp
The last standing Plant Power is just as bad as the previous closed locations. Poor Service and bad menu options are it's Achilles heel. Just like the Encinitas, Riverside and Fountain Valley Plant Power locations (all now closed down) I only stopped in to this location for a shake. There is nothing else on the menu worthwhile ordering Not sure how long this last location will survive..time will tell
google avatar

Jc R.

Yelp
Just love this place , food is just perfect , burgers are so yummy , shakes /drinks really good, the atmosphere is so cool and nostalgic. The service always great. They always greet you with respect and very helpful. Love it.
google avatar

Jerry W.

Yelp
There is no customer service because no employee interaction takes place until well after you've placed an order. This place is cash only and you have to order yourself at a touch screen. Good luck getting an employee's attention if you do have a question about the menu or what the restroom code is. You will be ignored until you escalate your inquiries to an uncomfortable volume. Then you are tersely answered before waiting way too long for mediocre food. Hopefully, the future of fast food is much more like Monty's Good Burger and the local (no longer in business but fantastic fast food purveyors with excellent service) V Burger. We need more plant based options but these folks need to do better and remember customer engagement is a necessary component of customer service. Maybe takeout only. It seems like a de facto ghost kitchen.
google avatar

Jenn B.

Yelp
Always like plant power and still enjoying under new ownership if i remember correctly... and quality of food is still high! Glad I stopped in. All very nice and helpful that worked there. Clean restaurant always a good thing! Will be back when in area!
google avatar

Russ H.

Yelp
This fast food place has a decent well-priced menu with an interesting meat substitute menu. I've only tried the "chicken" wrap and sweet potato fries, and it was a fine meal, but I do want to visit again and try something else. The LB restaurant has a very quaint and inviting interior, and it doesn't look like a "fast food" place from the outside.

Diane C.

Yelp
I decided to take the drive down the 605 all the way to Long Beach to try Plant Power. I'm so glad I did! The food was delicious. In my opinion, the best vegan burger ever. I had their version of the western bacon cheeseburger and a root beer float. I love that they have a drive-through. It's super convenient. Will definitely return again.
google avatar

Edward R.

Yelp
I've been coming here for quite sometime now, and their service and quality doesn't change, it's consistent and always good. If you are looking for a place that offers a variety of items that mimic some burgers that are very known, then you can stop by and try out there menu and see if they are the same or very close the burger being mimicked. I tried pretty much the whole menu with the exception of the chicken options. The ambiance is pretty calm, and the posters on the wall, feel like you went back in time which looks very good.
google avatar

Andrea B.

Yelp
I placed an online order through the Plant Power website for pickup and it was ready on time. There is a rewards program for Plant Power. Points can be earned in-store or online. The chicken sandwich was good, but for some reason there was just a slight twinge to it that I can't quite put a finger on. Something about the taste of their beef patties has also just been off to me every time I've had them at this location or the Hollywood location. I prefer the chicken patties over the beef. Being spoiled with vegan options in Southern California, I reserve the right to be a little picky and will say I'd rather go to other vegan burger joints over Plant Power. I would compare the french fries to Carls Jr. fries. The fries are a better value for your money than the salad as your side in the combo meal. I appreciate that the dressing for the salad came separate to avoid sogginess. The cookies 'n cream milkshake and the gingerbread milkshake were both excellent. They are thick, but easier to sip on after they thaw for about twenty minutes. The gingerbread flavor tastes exactly like eating gingerbread batter. My friend said the taste reminded them of teddy graham treats. This location in particular has a drive-thru - us vegans are evolving! There is very limited parking, but we had no trouble finding parking along the street nearby. There is indoor and outdoor seating as well as a fish pond that was inherited from the previous owners of the establishment that Plant Power now cares for.
google avatar

Ena K.

Yelp
I wish this place was closer to where I live. The food is tasty. My only problem was with service. You can order online or at a kiosk. I didn't know that my food was done and I waited 30 minutes before I asked someone in the back about my order.
google avatar

Nutan S.

Yelp
Ordered Holy Guacamole Burger and Iconic fries. The Holy Guacamole Burger was small for it's price but the Iconic fries were really good. Service was fast and no complaints on the ambience.
google avatar

Robin M.

Yelp
Delicious!! Do yourself a favor and get the Big Zac. It is so similar to the Big Mac it's eerie (I usually get it without the middle bun). My omnivore friend couldn't tell the difference and absolutely loved it. The chicken sandos are always great as well. This place is a bit hidden by trees (maybe clear those for better visibility?) but it's right on the corner. There is indoor and patio seating. I enjoy their retro style posters as well. Thanks, Plant Power!
google avatar

Devan H.

Yelp
I stopped here for breakfast one morning and went through the drive through. I got the breakfast sausage croissant with egg and cheese. I made it a meal with hash browns and a drink. The food was pretty basic for what it was. My total was just under $15. The staff was nice and friendly. I didn't eat on the inside but it looked pretty spacious from the drive through.
google avatar

Davit C.

Yelp
I'm not vegan or vegetarian by any means but when I'm close to a Plant Power I'll choose it over everything. The food is amazing and so are the drinks. The entire menu is a hit. The service is great, but I prefer a person taking my order instead of using a kiosk. I also would prefer if they accepted cash.

Ivy B.

Yelp
9 dollars for this dry flavorless disk. Go to Habitat if you want a good veggie burger for the same price (maybe less)
google avatar

Carolyn M.

Yelp
I think this place trumps my #1 spot (previously Nice Guys/burgers) for vegan burgers! They also have a fish sandwich, chicken tenders and chicken sandwiches. My order is a hamburger sub ketchup and mustard for secret sauce and add shredded lettuce, tomato, and jalapeños + iconic fries and a blueberry soda. Talk about a splurge lol! This lunch combo plus an oat milk soft serve (during their 25% off discount week) came shy of $20. I really love that they make their own Patties here and the fries are similar to in n out. There's a drive thru it suits a little tight at this location so watch the corners when driving around here.
google avatar

Jayson R.

Yelp
I think this might be the first plant based restaurant that I would choose to go to over a traditional restaurant. The burger itself is really good mainly because it has a nice texture and tastes really good. The bun feels very chewy despite feeling very airy and light and the cheese itself doesn't even taste like vegan cheese. I think I would choose this place over In and Out and I absolutely love In and Out haha.
google avatar

Miriah S.

Yelp
The buffalo wings are good. The cheeseburger isn't. Their vegan ranch sauce is bomb. It's 50 cents if you need extra. The wings come with 2 which is plenty. They ask for a tip in the drive thru. Awkwaaard. Bonus: try the strawberry shake. It's made with oat milk. .. and another thing ! For a place called Plant Power, they should have more options with real veggies.
google avatar

David A.

Yelp
My visit to Plant power fast food was great. It was easy to order..though the menu at driving up is far away to read. I ordered the Buffalo 66 sandwich with iconic fries and a lemonade. The food was good and hot. I was so full but hungry. The customer service was amazing, friendly, and helpful. Thank you guys.

Rebecca O.

Yelp
I've had mixed experiences here, the chicken tenders, especially the Buffalo tenders with ranch dressing is deliscious! I love the breakfast sandwiches & burritos also. The hamburgers are average, good enough but not great so I just go to Nice Burger for those. Had a horrible experience at LB location when I stopped on my way to an event, ordered and waited 20 minutes to get to the drive thru window and be told the person who took my order was now off and never submitted my order! Staff didnt seem to care but I couldn't wait any longer and had to leave and refused to return for, about, six months. I'll go there now for the tenders if I'm in the area, but no longer go out of my way, or go specifically there. I hate the tip option when I'm picking up in drive thru, especially because I haven't received my food yet and the staff person watches so closely. A tip should not be a thing when I'm just picking up.

Yelp
I love the variety of the burgers. I can order ANYTHING off the menu and be guaranteed it has no animal products. The French fries are delicious.

A Guy In West L. A.

Yelp
Plant Power helped me plan a catering order for a Long Beach party with about a dozen guests. I settled on individual "chicken" wraps with different sauces and a large Caesar salad. My order was ready on time and each wrap had been carefully labeled, so my guests knew which sauce each wrap had. People liked the food (even the little bit left over the next day). The prices were reasonable, not the least or most expensive I had seen around. I was 100% pleased with the food and with the friendly service.
