I've been here twice in a month, delicious Asian-inspired vegan food bursting with flavor! My hubby and I enjoyed a scrumptious feast for my birthday and had such a great time that we came back again a couple of weeks later! We've been to Planta Queen in Bethesda a handful of times, which is primarily American cuisine and features some of the same Asian dishes.
The restaurant is a bit pricey, so the best time to come to score deals is at 3pm on the weekdays - you can double-up with Planta Express lunch (Starter/app + entree + cookie for $28) and also Happy Hour (starts at 3pm ends at 7pm)! We would have paid close to $200 for our meal and spent less than $100! While we scored some good deals, our waitress was fantastic and hooked us up with some freebies!
Lycheetini (5/5) - Great $9 happy hour cocktail with a touch of sweetness and preferred it over the Sake It Me with vodka, watermelon, sake, and yozo- which was fun to try, but not as balanced. Hubby enjoyed his Expressotini with a caffeine kick!
I wasn't a big fan of the Feb. specialty cocktail, Strawberry Fields with Bourb, with an overpowering citrus flavor ant not worth paying $16.
Firecracker Wings (5/5) - The cauliflower wings were the star of the happy hour apps! The crispy cauliflower topped with crunchy sesame seeds had a mild spicy kick, that wasn't overpowering. We devoured them! It was less spicy than General D's Cauliflower app and highly recommend getting on happy hour! Of all the apps on the happy hour menu, this was by far the best one especially for sharing followed by the bao sliders.
Bao Sliders (5/5) - Hands-down my favorite starter, also on happy hour, $8 for 2 bao buns during happy hour while normally a single bun is $6.50. tender fried chick'n mushroom, pickled cucumber with a spicy kick from the kimchi, and a touch of mayo to absorb the spiciness - all the flavors tickle my tastebuds! The flavors blended really well together.
1,000 Layer Potato (5/5) - The crispy bite-size cubes of potatoes were tasty like mini hashbrowns with a creamy topping.
Dragon Roll (4/5) - Healthy starter, the sushi roll was filled with a crispy broccoli tempura, spinach, and avocado. While it was fun to try, I would save room to try another app next time!
Crispy Mushroom Roll (4/5) - While the mushroom roll was fun to try and a good deal during happy hour, but a bit bland. I preferred the crispy mushroom in the bao bun over the sticky rice in teh roll.
Summer Rolls (4/5) - Healthy option, good happy hour app in the summer. our app. The rolls stuffed with tofu, carrots, noodles with a tangy peanut sauce was a bit bland, but surprisingly filling. While the rolls were fun to try, I would save my appetite for the main course.
Scallion Pancake (2/5) - Not the traditional, thick crispy doughy fluffy pancake. The savory pancake is very thin and more like a pan-fried tortilla stuffed with bits of scallions, it's very similar to the Indian Paratha and does NOT have a pancake texture despite its name. It's served with 4 slices and is a bit oily and quite filling. After 1 slice, I started to get full and threw in the towel. It makes for great leftovers and easily combined with other dishes.
Udon Noodles (5/5) - Hands-down my favorite dish on the menu! The creamy Udon noodles with mushrooms basking in truffle oil is truly divine! The decadent dish tastes like fettucini alfredo, a few bites goes a long way! It also keeps very well for at least a few days.
Singapore Noodles (5/5) - The al dente thin noodles coated with curry turmeric powder were flavorful and surprisingly not greasy. While I enjoyed the heap of veggies (kale, onions, peppers, fried shallots etc), I wasn't a fan of the stiff egg mock meat and heavy dose of cilantro. I felt like the dish was missing some protein like tofu. I really enjoyed the dish and good Singapore noodles are hard to come by in the U.S.
French Toast (5/5) - Tasty dessert for the main course! The french toast tasted like funnel cake with a raspberry compote and paired well with Lycheetini cocktail.
Banana Waffle (3/5) - The waffle was it underwhelming with chocolate syrup, whipped cream, and slices of banana. Took over 1/2 hour to make. Hubby seemed to enjoy it though. Our waitress very kindly comped us for it.
Matcha Cheesecake (5/5) - Highlight of the meal, truly saving the best for last! The creamy matcha mousse dessert was on point and not a dense cheesecake sweet. The whipped cream and raspberry compote complemented the flavor and added a touch of sweetness.
Chocolate Chip Cookie (2/5) - I wasn't a fan of the ginormous sugar cookie with large dollops of chocolate served with the power lunch. It was very sweet and after a bite, I threw in the towel. Sometimes, the chef makes matcha cookies instead of chocolate chip, so I'd be interested in trying those!
Will definitely come back to explore the happy hour menu with more apps and try some more entrees from the Express lunch and the monthly specials!
