The 20 Best Hotels in Charleston, From Harborfront Cottages to Gilded-Age Inns | Condé Nast Traveler

"The Planters Inn corners what you might call "Main & Main" (i.e. arguably the best address in the city), in this case Market & Meeting. Despite heavy foot traffic outside, the inn's interior feels quiet and civilized, as if you've stepped into a well-heeled private home and been asked to stay awhile. Newer rooms feel more contemporary than their more traditional counterparts in the main building, but still in keeping with Charleston vernacular. Most Charlestonians agree that the Peninsula Grill epitomizes fine dining, and indeed established Charleston families stage special events and large family meals here. Carved four-poster mahogany beds, accent vases, large Audubon prints, burnished mirrors, and sweetgrass baskets lend a sense of place. "In Charleston , historic preservation is a way of life, and Planters Inn lives up to that reputation. The 1844 building, originally built as a dry good store and warehouse and converted to a hotel in the 1980s, was restored in 2008 and furnished with exacting attention to detail: the high ceilings, plush carpeting, handmade reproduction furniture, and gas-lit outdoor lanterns all work in concert to make each guest's stay as relaxing and authentic as possible .Several expansive new suites offer private entrances and more space, including the St. Philip Suite, a grand penthouse apartment setting the city’s new standard for luxurious accommodations (with a room rate to match). The courtyard's herringbone brick alleyway lined with palmetto trees and boxwoods feels a world apart from the busy Charleston City Market just outside the hotel's door. In the lobby, details like the antique chandelier, elaborate crown molding, and fireplace keep the vibe cozy and intimate. In the morning, relax in the parlor with your cup of coffee and take in the view over the market below."

"Planters Inn sits right near Charleston's City Market. The 64-room hotel is a restored 1884 building designed to look and feel like a Charleston mansion. The hotel's beautiful garden was created by landscape architect Sheila Wertimer, whose handiwork you'll see around town. The rooms and suites here feature 10-foot ceilings, custom crown molding, and handcrafted, four-poster beds. Planters Inn is also home to the Peninsula Grill, where you should go for dinner, followed by coconut cake."

Planters Inn

"How did it strike you on arrival? The Planters Inn corners what you might call "Main & Main" (i.e. arguably the best address in the city), in this case Market & Meeting. Despite heavy foot traffic outside, the inn's interior feels quiet and civilized, as if you've stepped into an affluent private southern residence and been asked to stay awhile. An antique Chinese tea chest graces the entry hall, as do large Gullah woven sweetgrass "rice fanners," and mango iced tea is served in the parlor. What’s the crowd like?Well-mannered travelers from every corner of the globe. Celebrities (but we won't name them). Honeymooners. Julia Sugarbakers. The good stuff: Tell us about your room.I chose a Garden Courtyard Suite in an expanded wing of eleven rooms, each opening onto an L-shaped veranda overlooking a tranquil inner courtyard. Each room has its own wrought iron deck furniture where you can sip an early evening wine or Old Fashioned and watch the ceremonial lighting of copper lanterns below. The newer rooms feel more contemporary than their more traditional counterparts in the main building, but still in keeping with Charleston vernacular. Carved four-poster mahogany beds, accent vases, large Audubon prints, burnished mirrors, and sweetgrass baskets lend a sense of place, while remote-control blinds, dual flat screens, rolling bathroom doors and walk-in showers keep things current. How about the little things? Any of that worth a mention? Any of that find its way into your suitcase?In-room amenities include Nespresso machine, strong backlit vanity lighting, and turndown macarons baked daily by the chef. Wi-Fi was free and strong. As for pilfering things in my suitcase, I should say that guests here are far too well-heeled to consider such an impulse, but if I were a true thief, the question is, "What would I NOT steal?" The Baker Historic Charleston Collection bed alone probably costs more than most luxury cars. Perhaps I would grab a reproduction Sacred Bird and Butterfly Chinese porcelain plate off a hallway wall, a pattern used in Charleston's Nathanial Russell House circa 1808. Room service: Worth it?Not surprisingly, the most popular room service request is a bottle of champagne and a slice of the hotel's famous 12-layer coconut cake (some people even order the cake for breakfast!). Generally, the hotel encourages guests to dine in the restaurant itself so as to enjoy dishes straight from the kitchen as the chef intended. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you. Most Charlestonians agree that the Peninsula Grill epitomizes fine dining, and indeed established Charleston families stage special events and large family meals here. The velvet-lined walls and sundry antebellum portraits set a cultivated mood without feeling stuffy, and the food is sublime. A petite but elegant bar is known for its seasonal Meyer Lemon Bourbon, Planters Punch, rare vintages of champagne, and broiled oysters. Bottom line: Why will we love it here?An instant classic since its inception in 1994, meticulously maintained, and the only Relais & Châteaux property in Charleston, a truly elegant hotel with unparalleled fine dining." - Allston McCrady

A beautiful, historic Inn right in the middle of it all. Walking distance to great restaurants, shopping, buggy tours, bars and more! The service was exceptional. We pulled right up to the front of the inn and they parked our car($50 a day which is the same as if you parked it yourself at a lot), checked us in early and made our dinner reservations for us. Easy peasy with southern charm and kindness. We had breakfast at their beautiful restaurant and it was absolutely delicious(the best grits I've ever had!)and again, the service was impeccable. Highly recommend this beautiful Inn.

Google
We’ve always associated Relais & Châteaux properties with exceptional quality and attention to detail, and have loved our stays at their hotels around the world. Unfortunately, our experience at Planters Inn in Charleston fell short of those expectations. While the location is excellent and the coffee and tea station was a lovely touch, the overall style of the property feels tired and dated. We booked a room advertised as having a balcony, only to find that it was actually a shared, communal space located down the hallway—not quite the private experience we had in mind. The staff was consistently friendly and helpful, which we truly appreciated. That said, we were surprised there was no small acknowledgment of our anniversary—something we’ve always enjoyed at other Relais & Châteaux properties. It’s certainly not required, but those thoughtful gestures have always made our stays feel more special. There were also a few maintenance issues in the room that detracted from the experience. The shower drain didn’t function properly, which I only realized once I was already in the shower—a rather inconvenient surprise. Additionally, one of the pillows had a visible stain beneath the case, which, regardless of the cover, should not have been in the room. Ultimately, while there were some nice aspects to our stay, Planters Inn did not reflect the elevated standard we’ve come to expect from the Relais & Châteaux brand. On our next visit to Charleston, we’ll likely explore other options.

The best experience you can get overall from arrival to departure, check in, rooms were amazing, got upgraded, we had kids so the extra space was great. Liam, Banks and Tristan were all graciously kind, made out trip to CHS so much better. The location is superb. We will be back.

Google
An absolute A+ spot, staff was very friendly to accommodate my last minute request, picking out a beautiful room that exceeded my expectations. Liam at the front desk was very helpful as was the other hotel staff. ||Excellent location as this was my first time in Charleston. Will absolutely be staying when I travel back.

Google
4.5 stars from us! The rooms are beautiful and well kept. The staff were extremely helpful. And the location can hardly be beaten. We had champagne and a slice of the famed coconut cake in the courtyard at 10:30 p.m. It was all very lovely. The AC couldn't quite keep up, which was really our only complaint.

S555INdh

Google
Great beds, great location. Please experience the onsite restaurant! (ignore the snooty welcoming, the waitstaff is friendly and the food terrific.) The AC is problematic. Valet parking a plus. This hotel is historic and a bit worn. Rooms spacious and charming. The morning room is lovely, with coffee service early. For the price there should be a system for the coffee to be hot, and the front desk young employees to know the locations of highlights in the area. They may be renovating this upcoming year. I hope so!

Best valet ever. Fancy hotel - very comfortable - we had a great time and really enjoyed it. The location is spot on and the food was world class. The staff is really helpful and it was a glorious way to spend a special weekend. Charleston is right outside the door.

Yelp
It's a Relais and Chateau Hotel. Hotels with this rating are usually best of the best. Planters Inn was no exception. Great location. Service was excellent. Staff was very friendly. Our suite was quite large. And the hotel restaurant was wonderful. Highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Beautiful place to stay. Hotel employees were very helpful all around, even with restaurant reservations and suggestions for night life. The attached restaurant was fantastic!!

Yelp
When you stay at Planters Inn, you're in for a double 5-star treat. First up is the iconic Georgian Era Planters Inn itself with one of the most stellar locations right smack in the center of the heart and soul of historic Charleston. Its warm period décor is both elegant and beautiful at its best. The rooms are large, spotlessly clean with a snuggly teddy bear on the beds which you may purchase if you desire. The service is friendly and top-notch professional in every way, always attentive to your needs. And on all of this, you need not just take my word as Planters Inn Charleston was the winner of the coveted Travel + Leisure magazine's #1 Best Boutique Hotel in the United States Award and also recognized on Conde Nast Traveler Magazine's Top 100 Hotels List. The reason I mentioned a double 5-star treat is its adjoining garden and restaurant, the Peninsula Grill, which is the subject of a separate review. \

Yelp
Hubs and I went to Charleston for our babymoon. We decided on Planters Inn and we did not regret it. I will say check-in took forever, but we were upgraded to an amazing suite so it was worth it. The room was huge and gorgeous. The location is perfect for exploring Charleston. We were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go. They do offer valet at the hotel but we parked in the parking garage across the street instead. One of the evenings we were sent champagne and coconut cake from room service (adjacent Peninsula Grill) which was so sweet. It was a perfect hotel for our babymoon. Planters Inn is a splurge, but if you're looking for a stunning place to stay in Charleston - this is it!

Yelp
The ambiance and location were amazing- right in the heart of the historic district- and the staff was courteous and attentive. Special shout-out to Darrin at the desk this morning. We were in a rush to get to the airport and the fellow made sure our car was brought around at 5:15am. He also sent us on our way with waters and coffee unprompted. Great experience and would definitely recommend to anyone looking for an excellent stay in Charleston.

Yelp
This is a good choice if you want to be right in the middle of the action in the Charleston Market area. I had a piazza room, which opens onto their courtyard and has a bistro table for outdoor seating. The room was a good size and nicely furnished with good blackout drapes. My room happened to directly overlook the market building, so there was some street noise from that and from the bus stop directly beside the hotel. There was also considerable noise from some sort of street cleaner that sounded like a jet landing on Meeting St. at 5am. The bathroom is a little plain but does have a huge tub that would be good for a nice soak. I did not try the Peninsula Grill restaurant in the hotel, but the decor looked beautiful. Service was of particular note throughout; everyone is ultra-professional and the check-in was very smooth and pleasant from the entry to the reception desk to an escort to your room.

Yelp
This was the best hotel we stayed at!! Good water pressure. The staff was incredible. Really sweet people. The little bears are the cutest in the world. The decor inside is absolutely beautiful. We stayed in the Garden Courtyard Suite and it was absolutely magnificent.

Yelp
I liked this hotel - large room - great firm mattress - room beautifully decorated- perfect location. The sound proofing could be better - but in the end it didn't bother our sleep so I will not subtract a star. Their restaurant is amazing.

Yelp
Had a wonderful stay for a quick birthday getaway! The staff was fantastic. Everyone made me feel welcomed and was so accommodating. The room was spacious, clean, with nice decor. I LOVED the coconut cake and being able to enjoy a glass of wine in the courtyard.

Yelp
Planters Inn is a Relais & Châteaux property. I follow and book with Relais for a couple of reasons. One is service and the second is more service. The properties in their portfolio are quaint and clean. Every time you turn the corner, you're greeted by staff who are doing everything they can to help and provide service that goes beyond expectations all in a very quaint setting.

Yelp
Planters Inn on North Market Street in Charleston and is in a great location. It is a beautiful hotel and exudes southern charm. All of the staff at the hotel was excellent and helpful. The hotel is absolutely beautifully appointed and there were so many nice touches from the coffee, cookies, lemonade and macaroons at night during our stay. Our room was clean, spacious and comfortable and the A/C worked great in the 90º plus heat in August. The bathroom was awesome with very nice fixtures. The grounds and lobby of the hotel are also lovely. We really like the location overlooking the Charleston Market and everything on the Peninsula is within easy walking distance. I would definitely stay here again when visiting Charleston.

Yelp
Classic Charleston!! The sitting room is adorable with free coffee and cookies. The peninsula grill is to die for (check out the coconut cake)

Yelp
Was just there this week. How charming!! My favorite hotel I have ever stayed at! Felt like home and not a hotel! Clean, modern, spacious, restful, warm staff!!! A lot of attention went into the rooms. For example dimmable lights in the bedroom and two in the bathroom. We had a fireplace too. Was incredibly romantic and relaxing. Expensive Antique furniture incredibly well maintained with all glass tops! All matching! It wasn't old though it was antique if you know what I mean. Very modern bathroom. The room was sooo spacious and cozy I wanted to just rent it and live there!! Never experienced anything like this. Hotels are so cold in comparison. There is Airbnb but this was 100 times better than Airbnb. And the staff were all warm and friendly. I look forward to future stays. I plan to go back to SC just to stay here. It's relaxing and comforting and I can go on and on. Cons? Hmmmm. It doesn't look that wow on the outside. Or even in the lobby. Be patient. Because the room is something else. It's so spacious and beautiful and clean!!! Oh also for anyone wondering the room was bug free. I was up late through the night with the lights dimmed, If there were any I would have seen it. The teddy bears are too cute and we purchased one at front desk. Great quality! Yeah I'm not one for these things but wanted a reminder of how at peace and comfortable and restful I felt here.

Nazhat S.

Yelp
The service here is top notch. Really impressed by how helpful the front desk staff were. I would've given this place 5 stars just for that. I dropped to 4 stars for a few reasons: -the pillows on the bed were really uncomfortable. They're too big to sleep on without your head being too high up all night. I didn't sleep well either night due to that. -we put our room service card out the night prior before the deadline but the next morning it was still on our door. We were in a rush so we had to just skip breakfast at that point. -we didn't get any explanation about the property or services provided. We were showed to our room and that was that. It would've been nice to learn about amenities or had recommendations shared. The room was beautiful. We got the king suite with a separate living room, which was lovely. There weren't any great views, but I didn't mind. Overall, I'd recommend this hotel. And yes, it is pricy and the coconut cake is excellent! But you know both those things coming in.

Yelp
Such an amazing and historic hotel! From the valet (Mike and Nick) and the Front Desk (Banks) to the restaurant (Pamela) and bar (Corey), the entire staff was warm, friendly, and extremely helpful. The room was big and cozy, and the shower had excellent water pressure. I can't recommend this place enough. Hands down, it's the best hotel in Charleston!
google avatar

Yelp
Old and tired, need up dating. Carpets worn, turned up in corners, do not look clean. Spotty service. We have been going here for years, NO MORE !
google avatar

Kay P.

Yelp
Beautiful property, but disappointed that we never were able to take advantage of garden area, or even the bar. It was always closed for private party. Disappointing because part of the reason that we booked here. Never was able to try the famous cake. Walked into the bar area a few times and it was full (small), but never was even greeted or asked if we would like to order or offer another option. Perhaps offer to have it delivered to our room...! Do not remember specific names, not that it matters, but front desk staff was not very friendly or seemed preoccupied with folks that were checking in as part of a wedding party, which I understand is an important event, but we also were paying guests. Anyway, not sure that I would go back based on my first visit . Kindness goes a long way...hospitality in a hospitality business works and didn't feel it here

Gerald C.

Yelp
I cannot say enough good things about this hotel. The rooms are spacious and well appointed. The fit and finish of the bathrooms is top notch. It is a top tier hotel at a reasonable price. We stayed in the Governor's Suite which had a huge bedroom and living room - with a pull out sofa sleeper that was actually sleep-able. And it had 2 bathrooms, so my wife and I had one and our son had his own. And I would be completely remiss if I didn't point out how excellent, excellent, excellent the service is. EVERY person we encountered bent over backwards to serve. Everyone at the front desk was polite, kind, and very helpful. The valets were professional and quick. Our maid couldn't do enough for us. She was such a charming, caring person. She really wanted to make sure we had everything we needed. This place is an absolute gem and we highly recommended it. You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
Beautiful and stately. Even the small suites are well appointed! Loved having my wedding here - its in a great location.

Yelp
Planter's Inn is a lovely place to stay while in the fine city of Charleston. It's centrally located, the staff is friendly & attentive, and the rooms are beautiful. During your stay, don't miss getting a drink at their restaurant The Peninsula. Stop in to say hello to the friendliest bartender in town - Corey. We've been to Charleston many times over the years. We have now found the place where we'll be staying every time we come back!

Yelp
This Inn was a big disappointment. Let me start by saying we came home with bedbug bites from our 2nd floor room. Renovations have been poorly done. Bathroom was small, dark, ceiling fan filthy and noisy, walls showing repair after repair, Paint chips on floor. Room was rear view with a second floor camera from next door building pointing directly into unit. I was looking at it while sitting in bed. Inn did not provide any type of breakfast which was supposed to be included in the rate we paid. They said it was city order that they could not serve the buffet and told us to go to any of the open places around the hotel. Other inns we have stayed at during Covid time have come up with creative solutions to continue providing breakfast. They also cancelled the evening wine and cheese hour. With no to go option or any substituted nicety . The staff was very pleasant. As a whole we are very disappointed with our stay. Concerned about our luggage with bed bugs, so dealing the treating that issue now. Will not visit Planter Inn again.

Yelp
We great time we had in Charleston (our first but certainly not last visit), and our stay at Planters Inn made it even greater. The hospitality was second to none - every staff member greeted us, they wished my wife a happy birthday on her birthday, and we got restaurant and daily touring recommendations. In particular, Tim at the front desk was accommodating since the moment we checked in to the moment we checked out and got a taxi to the airport. He's very friendly, thoughtful, and really cares about the guests. He also sent up a bottle of Prosecco and a slice of their famous coconut cake to celebrate my wife's birthday. And also, a bellboy named Nick should be recognized - also a very friendly person who provided good recommendations on local restaurants and bars. Another thing that stood out was as our taxi was pulling up to the hotel, Nick was already greeting us as we were getting out of the car and welcoming us to Charleston and the Planters Inn. That's just amazing attention to detail and made us feel special and know that we picked the right hotel by staying at Planters Inn.

Yelp
First the good. The staff was extremely polite and helpful. The room was large and clean. The keurig in the room was nice. It was located right in the downtown area. The afternoon lemonade and tea was refreshing and the night cookies were good. Valet all day parking was a reasonable price. Now the things that make it not worth the money. Bed was very high off the ground which made it difficult to get into. The tv only had half the channels working as the digital signal was not working on the other half. Our room was on the first floor and the window was on a street where anyone walking by could see in and if you close the shutters it was like a cave it was so dark. I've paid less for a room in a castle in Ireland that was larger and nicer. All in all if I came back I would look for another place that was a little less expensive as I'm not sure it was worth $1500 for 3 nights.

Yelp
Beyond excellence in this 1844 inn. Met at the door, baggage taken in without my lifting a finger and my car was taking off to be parked.

Leigh Barry H.

Yelp
My husband and I stayed at Planter's Inn, and it was fabulous! Every single staff member including the management Bankston the most gracious host, the valet Nic and Mike, the restaurant staff Pamela and housekeeping were beyond welcoming and absolutely lovely. The staff anticipated our every need with warm hospitality. The rooms were incredibly generous and offered a lot of privacy. You could not hear anyone else next to you or even on the floors. The water pressure was amazing and the towels were lavishly soft. One of the best hotel stays we have had! We've been around the block and are pretty darn picky to say the least. This is by far the best place to stay if you want central location and superb comfort.

Yelp
Don't let the pictures put you off. It looks old. It's not. It's traditional, with furniture that was made to last generations. Perfect, well cared for furniture. Modern and fresh bedding, bathroom amenities, and flooring. I was so happy when we walked into our room. I was concerned it would be rundown and called "historical" for the ripoff price. Oh no - this hotel is wonderful. Connected to the Peninsula Grill, Planters Inn is historical indeed but you will not do without. Luxurious bathrooms, super comfortable bed and bedding. Service came in for turn down while we were out shopping and left macrons on the nightstand for when we returned. If it's the little things that add up, this hotel is well over the top. Personalized service - Bellhops remember your name, are quick with suggestions and the valet parking is most reasonable compared to other hotels in the area. Under $20 with in/out privileges. There are beverages in the parlor just off the entrance. You step back into time when you walk in the front door, and luxury when you step into your room. Loved it.

Philip C.

Yelp
This is one of the nicest hotels that I have ever had the pleasure to stay in . I came to South Carolina for a much needed vacation. This place just exemplifies southern hospitality. The people who staff the inn are so nice, helpful, and knowledgeable. The day to day room service was above anything I could have expected. The rooms are cozy and warm feeling . The ac was perfect and the water pressure in the shower was heavenly. The location was also ideal as you are in the center of the historic city . The valet parking costs you $31 a day which is more then fair as your car is kept in a secure lot . This is a hotel I would recommend very highly to anyone looking to visit Charleston .

Yelp
Took me awhile to sit down and write a review for this Relais & Chateaux property. Shout out to the Manager who is FIVE stars. What a nice lovely gentleman who went above and beyond. He is an asset to this hotel and deserves whatever accolades can be bestowed upon him. Shout in to the Owners who get negative stars for pulling the pet friendly policy the prior owners offered. In this day and age, there are those of us upscale travelers who enjoy traveling avec chien. Why in the world would you be so anti pets? It simply doesn't make sense. The Carlyle in NYC welcomes them, for Heaven's sake, as do many other upscale hotels around the country. I did not like my room one bit. It was most definitely not like staying in a standard Relais & Chateaux. I could go on and on about it but I won't. My initial bell man was also a joke. Again, not in line with the Relais & Chateaux ambiance. Items that were in line with what Relais & Chateaux stands for, however, aside from the Manager, included the overnight desk clerk. This lovely lady had great energy and kindly found me some soy milk early in the morning with a pleasant, welcoming Southern charm. The afternoon tea/coffee and cookies were delicious and made you feel as if you were being entertained in the parlor of an old charming southern plantation. And, the coconut cake found in the restaurant is actually trademarked and is A+++. You can easily take some to go and enjoy on the road. The manager is most definitely THE standout of the hotel but if you are traveling with le chien, then try the Wentworth Mansion or the new Kimpton being built downtown. It would not surprise me in the least bit if this place loses their Relais & Chateaux designation.

Yelp
The Planter's Inn is a beautiful hotel that's perfectly positioned in the heart of Charleston's historic district and is in walking distance to many restaurants and the city market. Despite opening in the 1990s the Planter's Inn looks like a piece of art out of Charleston's historic past with beautiful woodwork, hardwood floors, a parlor, and a courtyard. The rooms are large and well appointed with comfortable period looking furniture. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful as you'd expect of a hotel at their price point. I would love to give the Planter's Inn a better rating, but on our arrival found wine stained sheets on the pull out sofa and a dirty towel far under the vanity in the bathroom. The situation was quickly resolved by the friendly housekeeping staff, but I feel a hotel at this price point should perform better.

Shane H.

Yelp
I'm sad to have to provide such a mixed review of this place. When booking the room, my wife and I, who were in Charleston for our minimoon, were excited based on the pictures. Upon arrival, the inside of the hotel seemed rather dated, not because of the classical style but because it just appeared, for lack of a better word, old. There was a slight stale smell to the place too. When checking in, we were informed that the courtyard room we had booked was not available after all. We were given a room considered to be an upgrade, but it lacked the balcony the original room had and it faced a busy street. We could hear the traffic at night that we were seeking to avoid by booking a courtyard room in the first place. One highlight in the midst of our disappointment was the coconut cake from Peninsula Grill, a restaurant inside the hotel. It is phenomenal.

This is the second time I've stayed at Planters Inn. The inn is conveniently located directly across from the market and the atmosphere is old Charleston...lovely. The rooms are traditional but the furniture is getting dated. It needed to be polished and our tub/shower could have been cleaner. Our room was on the front of the inn and it was the noisiest room I've ever stayed in. It would have been nice to get a heads up for $500/night that the following happens at the crack of dawn 1) the daily street sweeper 2) the daily garbage truck 3) the maids closet right next to our door - talking loudly and getting their cleaning carts out and then the last day we were woken up to painters putting up their ladders right up to our windows. I couldn't wait to get home to uninterrupted sleep! I did think the bear and the macaroons were a nice touch and the outdoor seating was pretty.

Yelp
A very classy hotel, in the old style decor that is not all brass and glass. From Sam the doorman/valet to reception to house keeping, all well done. Daily, there is a wine and cheese mixer in the lobby. The rooms are decorated with poster beds and dark woods. The guests during our stay were mostly age 50+. The location is perfect for sightseeing on the river or the many garden squares. Planters is right in the middle of it all. The one negative is the complimentary breakfast. It seemed to us, during our stay, that the buffet is a bit overwhelmed by the number of guests. The lady was working her behind off but seemed frazzled the tree mornings we were there. Not the atmosphere I like to start my day.

Yelp
I stayed in the Proprietor's Suite for my third anniversary. This review is probably better suited for those who have stayed in inns and hotels at this price point a few times in the past and have a feel for the ones that meet those expectations and those that don't. If this were a Holiday Inn Express, I would've given it four stars, but with a $700 per night room charge comes top tier expectations that the owners should have to answer to. On the other hand, if you want charm and nothing more, I can't say there's anything better because I've only stayed in nicer traditional hotels in Charleston, but it might suit your needs. I'll cut to the biggest issues first: for two nights, I paid almost $1500 to stay at the Planter's. Our room was very large and very clean, but lacked the quality and details you expect for what many would pay for a month's rent. Upon entering, what looked like a leather Chesterfield sofa in the pictures was (I'm almost sure of it because of flaking veneer) vinyl, and one of the buttons was missing from a cushion. The mini-bar was empty and nothing more than a cheap white dorm fridge with a missing leg, so that it wobbled back and forth when you opened it. The bed itself was a beautiful canopy king, but the mattress was woefully cheap and rickety when we hopped on it, and (my biggest pet peeve) the pillows were a standard size flat mix of aging feather style and polyester fill. Which brings me to the bathroom. Italian marble they say, and I have no reason to believe otherwise, but dated, likely to when the Inn was renovated in the 1990s. The soaking tub is crammed into a cubby and the shower head is small with aging metal and glass enclosure for the shower itself. And the amenities: Hermés? Nope. L'Occitane perhaps? Uh-uh. For you, the cherished guest, it's Gilchrist and Soames, which is a fancy name for generic Sysco hotel products that are made in Plainfield, Indiana. I probably would've been better off bringing my own supermarket brands. The front desk was mostly polite, if occasionally aloof. On one occasion I was ignored for a good three minutes as the receptionist pounded away on his computer. I asked for a room service menu and was weirdly told there was one in my room after I insisted there wasn't--it was just kind of left at that. The bellmen are also polite but not well-trained on how to receive guests at an inn of this supposed caliber. And finally, their room key system was a mess the whole time we were there. I had to get a new key on two separate occasions after I was locked out, with a total of six keys made unsuccessfully, meaning I had to trek to my room only to find I was still locked out and head back to the front desk, who did nothing but keep trying to make me a new key, all while my spouse sat outside the room door. For a lot of folks, much of this might seem picky. But for people who don't like to drop that much cash without being completely wowed, you probably understand my gripes. The Planter's Inn has a lot to work on in the service and amenities department, which is really the only thing that sets fine hotels apart from the masses. Drop $200 at that Holiday Inn down the street instead--it looked nice and won't have me budgeting for the next few weeks as a result of what was really an underwhelming experience.

Yelp
Planters Inn on North Market Street in Charleston is an amazing and beautiful hotel. Everything here is first class and goes above and beyond to provide a memorable experience. The staff here is excellent and makes sure that everything is taken care of and that everyone has what they need. I really like the location overlooking the Charleston Market and everything on the Peninsula is within easy walking distance. My expectations were exceeded in just about every way here with a few pleasant surprises included. The Planters Inn is everything that a hotel should be.This is one of my favorite hotels in Charleston and I look forward to visiting here in the future and I am confident that it will be a good stay.

Yelp
Such an amazing hotel!!! The staff was friendly and the rooms were beautiful. Right next to the market and lots of shops and restaurants. Such an old southern charm and class. Marcus at the door was great and gave us so many great recommendations where to eat, shop and go for an adventure. I love the old southern vibe. I will be back for sure. You call them and they will help you day or night. And you must eat the coconut cake at the peninsula grill that is attached to the inn. Loved it here!!!

Yelp
Just returned from a couple of nights at this Charleston favorite. It really is a lovely place. It is centrally located, has amazing staff, and is lovely. I'm not sure how it would be with little kids, but the free chocolate chip cookies later in the day may win them over. Our room was not quite ready upon check in but I think that is more do to the widespread staff shortages that the hospitality industry is facing then incompetence of any sort. It did give us time to relax in the front parlor. It was tastefully decorated and there were refreshments available. Valet parking, while an additional fee, was a life saver. Parking is not easy or plentiful in the area. At least not in my opinion. I was surprised at how quickly we got our car every time it was requested as well. The staff is amazing. I can't rate them highly enough. Edmund handled our check-in issue gracefully and kept us informed. David and Banks were great resources for the city and gave on point restaurant recommendations. And you never felt as though you were imposing or they were in any way put out by my never ending follow up questions. I would highly recommend Planters. I may not go to the extra expense every time I go to Charleston, but I'll be tempted.

Yelp
I'm not sure where I should start. This one star is for the private dining staff management that works with Peninsula Grill. I had booked a weekend getaway for my 23 friends for a bachelor party, and I decided to have a nice dinner for the bachelor with Peninsula Grill. After discussions with Abby, who was very accommodating and easy to chat with, we went ahead and booked a private room for mid May. I have so far paid only the room fee for the room, (which was $545) and as it stands on 4/16 they have not shown any way of refunding payment. There is a stay at home order till 4/28 and I foresee it being much longer than that. Even if it was lifted by 5/1, payment should be refunded. We are all coming from the Midwest, west coast, for that weekend, and now we can't due to this Pandemic. I am very patient, but I am just waiting for Planters Inn and Peninsula Grill to do the right thing. Wish we could have taken advantage of Charleston and the restaurant.

Yelp
This place was a blessing after staying in a damp hotel in Hilton Head for a few days before the eclipse. This is a boutique hotel with a bnb feel, minus the breakfast. The room was very nice (high ceilings, decor, AC even in the bathroom haha, and toiletries the provide was plentiful). We loved the cleaning staff; they are exemplary of southern hospitality. The hotel provides Nespresso machines in each room and refill the pods everyday. They also give you complimentary water and macrons at night at the turndown service. The cute teddy bear they put on your bed is not free so don't accidentally pack it! It is available for purchase. What I didn't like was the confusion over breakfast. They made it seem like there's complimentary continental breakfast downstairs in the courtyard, but when you walk down (which is even confusing where the hostess is) they tell you to choose from a menu and you realize you're paying for breakfast at Peninsula Grill. It's fine if that's your choice, but I don't like misleading information. Front desk could be friendlier. Overall our stay was great. The hotel was on Market Street so everything was in walking distance. Our first visit to Charleston was pretty perfect.

Yelp
What a fantastic hotel! I've been lucky enough to stay in a lot of amazing hotels in the last couple decades, including other Relais & Chateaux properties. The Planter's Inn ranks very highly among those top hotels. The wonderful staff--from the valets to the front desk staff to the housekeeping ladies--made my wife and I feel at home during our three nights here. They were kind, courteous, and it felt like they genuinely wanted to go the extra mile to be friendly. This is in stark contrast to the stuffiness (almost a begrudging helpfulness) that I've experienced at some other fine establishments. The room was as incredible as a room could be. A large space with a single small window overlooking the street outside. Well insulated, it stayed comfortably warm and despite being just above a highly traveled road, we didn't hear much noise from the outside world. The king bed was the perfect firmness for us and the rest of the furnishings were equally comfortable. It is in the huge bathroom, however, that I have my only gripe about the Planter's Inn--and boy is it a minor gripe. The sink drain was slow. There, I said it, the only thing wrong with our stay was a slow sink, and I'm sure if I had complained about it, they would have sent someone up to fix it. All in all, our stay here was exquisite and I wouldn't hesitate to come back the next time we're in Charleston. We even brought a couple of bears home with us.

Yelp
This is a most amazing hotel in the French Quarter and directly across from the Market. The staff were friendly and made the entire stay restorative and peaceful.

Yelp
Very disappointed in the lack of professionalism demonstrated by Tristan Brigman. Spoke to her about a request for a refund of a cancellation penalty due to covid quarantine issues and despite her promises to call back she never did. She hid from the issue. Surprising from a well respected hotel group as Relais + Chateaux. Live and learn I guess. Jack Devine

Yelp
The Planters Inn was gorgeous! Beautiful large rooms. The bathrooms were spectacular and although we did not have a bathtub in our room - the shower was great. The bed was so comfortable and my husband who wakes very early normally was able to sleep in! The front desk staff was very helpful and gave us good recommendations on tours. The only thing that was lacking in my opinion was no turn down service and no slippers as many luxury hotels such as this usually provide.

Yelp
Overall disappointing for a hotel which is supposed to excel in service & comfort & high end accommodations. The good: Room & hotel was clean & nice (except as below) The bad: Service was (at best) fair: bellman had to be sought out & we're not friendly. Valet parking: had to go & search them out. Often I couldn't find them & stood by my car till they showed up. They delivered wine & opener as asked but no glasses Receiving area has coffee, water, ice, cider but usually low or gone & ice melted. This are had dirty cups which never seemed to get picked up. No concierge & staff not well informed about common activities, restaurants

Yelp
The charm of the south is alive and well at the Planters Inn. The rooms and bathrooms are very spacious and beautifully decorated. The staff are amazing and very generous with their time and service. We did not have a chance to eat at their restaurant but did have a nice drink at the bar. Definitely a hit and we will be back ... no question about it!

Yelp
Planter's Inn and the Peninsula Grill have both gotten a (rare) 5 star review from me. From the room, to the service, to the location I can't say enough good things (thus a 5 star review it is). We got a package deal for a "deluxe king" in their "piazza" wing, which in addition to the room included valet parking and continental breakfast (or half off full service breakfast) at the Peninsula Grill. First, the room - I want the room in my house - it was filled with furniture that had touches of southern detail, especially a four poster bed and luxurious linens that I wanted to pack up in my luggage and take with me. The room didn't skimp on modern conveniences either, with central HVAC, noise insulating windows, a jacuzzi tub, and complimentary wifi throughout the hotel. Service was top notch, from the (cute-to-boot) valet to the concierge to the room service (we came back to find the results of the evening turndown service - two bottles of water, a filled ice, drawn curtains, two creme cookies and a teddy bear perched on the bed pillows). Location was great, about a 10-15 minute walk to the battery and the shops of city market and king street are right outside the door (personal plus, Ben & Jerry's a couple of storefronts down on Market!). Without a doubt one of the best hotel stays I've had.

Yelp
After staying at the Belmond Charleston we switched to the Planters Inn for a two night stay in a new City Suite (room 229) and were very glad we did. The room was larger than we needed but it was great to have the space. Highlights include a beautiful wood floor, a large dressing area, and a really spacious bathroom with good water pressure. The City Suite is in the newer building so you do not need to enter and exit through the lobby area. When in our room, we did not hear our neighbors in adjacent rooms. The windows are double (maybe triple) paned) to help mute outside noise. Very friendly and efficient front desk and bellmen. Lemonade in the lobby is a nice touch given the warm weather during our visit. Room 229 overlooks the historic Charleston City Market and North Market Street. Great location for sightseeing, restaurants and shopping.

Yelp
My boyfriend brought me here for Valentine's Day, and we had an AMAAAZING experience. The Planter's Inn is small, but very nice and quaint. From your first step on the property, the staff here definitely shows you what Southern hospitality is all about. The rooms are very classy and comfortable. Through the hotel, my boyfriend was able to have home-made chocolates and roses waiting inside. Actually, my boyfriend asked for a room with a jacuzzi tub, but we were first taken to a room without one. He called in, and staff graciously showed us to the appropriate room. Both rooms were equally beautiful. And again, staff was very courteous and hospitable. Location is great and very central to many great places downtown. Overall, we had a great time in a very beautiful and relaxing setting.

Yelp
This Hotel was exceptional. The customer service from everyone on staff was so impressive. They helped arranged for a special surprise for my husband. The room was clean, not just hotel clean. OCD clean! Spotless! Even though we were at the center of all of tHe action but inside our room you can't hear a thing. The bed was very comfortable and thread count on the sheets was top quality. Absolutely the best hotel stay we have experienced. Room service breakfast was delicious, breakfast for one was enough for two people.
