Plas Dinas Country House | Best places to stay in the Snowdonia National Park

"If you enjoyed Caernarfon Castle’s starring role in The Crown, then Grade II-listed Plas Dinas not only makes for a great base nearby, but also boasts its own royal connections: it’s the family home of Lord Snowdon, who married HRH Princess Margaret in 1961. This is truly a hotel fit for a princess with lavish rooms and fine dining in the Gunroom Restaurant (with 2 Michelin rosettes), making for a genteel break in stylish surroundings. The signature Snowdon’s Afternoon Tea is the epitome of timeless style. As well as the main hotel, there are three cosy, self-catering cottages for multi-generational escapes. While the hotel is aimed primarily at couples, families are welcome in the cottages. They’ve recently won Best Hotel at the North Wales Tourism Awards for the second year running, the Go Food and Drink Award at the North Wales Tourism Awards, and the Editors Choice Historic Award at the Good Hotel Guide. We recently went to Plas Dinas Country House for afternoon tea as we were celebrating our wedding anniversary. The first thing we noticed was how lovely the gardens looked with many shrubs in flower. We selected the Snowdon afternoon tea and although we have dietary requirements, this was not an issue for the chefs. The food was absolutely delicious from the hot food, the tasty sandwiches to the scrumptious cakes. We had the afternoon tea in the beautiful drawing room , which we appreciated. We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. We were unable to eat all of the cakes, so these were boxed up for us to take home, which we then ate them later on in the evening. In our opinion it is the nicest experience we have ever had as an afternoon tea and would highly recommend it.

We chose Plas Dinas as part of a short break in North Wales, and based on other TA reviews. We were not disappointed.||What a great place to stay. Excellent bedrooms, lovely surroundings, superb food and professional but unstuffy service. The dinner menu cleverly combines a tasting menu with three courses where there is a choice. Furthermore, changes are made to the “fixed” elements of the menu each evening, so that those staying longer than one night do not tire of what is on offer. There is an assuredness in the kitchen which produces dish after dish perfect in every detail. ||Oh - and breakfast was good too! Highly recommended.

A pleasant stay here for three nights. Our small room “Major” suffered from intermittent WiFi (which is really annoying if you are in the middle of something) and incredibly creaky floorboards so best avoided if you are light sleepers. The room had some nice touches including a small decanter of sherry which arrived for our second evening. Daniel tried to move us into another room but none were available for the two more nights. ||We had a very nice afternoon tea when we arrived, however we later read in the book provided in our room that we should have been offered extra sandwiches.||Aperitifs are served in the delightful drawing room before dinner along with canapés. No nibbles are available to go with drinks which was disappointing if you are not staying for dinner on other nights. No other food options are available except the tasting menu so unless you take that every night you have to go into Caernarfon. ||The “tasting” menu is three courses (with four choices for each) with a few small extras throw in. There were extra veggies but at a cost. We wanted to add the cheese course but told the chef had gone home so wasn’t available! ||Breakfast is cooked to order with all the usual options you’d expect for a good hotel.||We thought our afternoon tea had been give free to make up for the disturbed night, but no, it was just omitted from the bill by accident! Would I recommend coming here? Probably yes, but just for one night and avoid “Major”!

We arrived a little early, but were welcomed delightfully and advised that our room was ready and that we’d been upgraded to the Princess Margaret suite which was delightful.||The whole experience, from welcome, dinner, breakfast and departure was excellent – definitely in my top 2 hotel experiences. The staff were uniformly superb and charming.||The house itself is lovely, as are the grounds.||The food was excellent too (often posh hotels with restaurants are let down by breakfast: this was certainly not the case here); I thought the notion of the ‘tasting menu with choices’ was splendid.||Overall, an excellent experience.

I just wanted to say a massive thank you for accommodating our wedding last Friday. The whole day was perfect and exactly how we imagined. The food was esquisite, the service was spot on, the weather was kind to us and everything was just so professional. |I always loved Plas Dinas, but now I love it even more. ☺️☺️ Without Annie, who planned out our wedding day, and without the whole Plas Dinas team, this would have not been the same. Forever grateful to you all.

My husband and I had a 15 day amazing tour of Great Britain this summer! We chose to explore 4 days in Scotland, 6 days in England and 4 days of North Wales. After months of research of areas and accommodations and reviews, Plas Dinas looked very attractive to us with its royal connection and history and lovely setting in Caernarfon. We both enjoyed our stay here very much and the hospitality we received with friendly staff, especially Liam, the assistant manager who was very helpful to me when I had a medical issue and referred me to a very close by pharmacy where I was well taken care of. I am very thankful!|We have wonderful memories in Wales and definitely recommend to anyone to stay here in this beautiful country house.

After an incredible dining experience in 2024, we vowed to come back and stay in one of the rooms at Plas Dinas. We opted for 3 nights in the Princess Margaret Junior Suite and, as part of a package, we had two 9 cse dinners, breakfast each morning and an afternoon tea thrown in for good measure. From start to finish, we loved every moment. We were shown to our room on arrival and had all the usual bits explained e.g. meal timings etc…. The room was absolutely stunning as was the bathroom. (It would take me too long to describe so please check the webpage). There was a chilled bottle of champagne, some hand made chocolates and complimentary Sherry for us to enjoy also. Dinner, once again, was spectacular, from the early arrival in the drawing room, to the petit fours at the end. Again, we paired wine with the main courses and weren’t disappointed. Our stay did cross over a seasonal menu change which we got quite excited about however, sadly not all of the dishes were available which was a slight disappointment (we’d had to rig our afternoon tea around the menu change). I should say that it didn’t detract from the meal (or the overall experience )as there were still amazing dishes that we hadn’t tried. The afternoon tea was also fantastic, with a ton of great sandwiches and cakes which we couldn’t finish. Plas Dinas really is something special. It’s been refurbed / decorated beautifully whilst maintaining its historical links which really is quite something. The food is exceptional and there’s some cracking wine too. Final mention to the front of house, dining and cleaning staff ; they all do such a fantastic job and it’s obvious they’re key to Plas Dinas success. We can’t wait to come back and whilst it’s not cheap, it’s incredible value for money . Go on, treat yourself.

The beauty of North Wales has long been undone by the lack of quality accommodation. We were delighted to find Plas Dinas breaks the mold and offers luxury and style in a fabulous setting.|All rooms are individual and you can select your own room on booking. We chose Lady Buckley, a deluxe room, with a superb comfortable bed and facilities.|Although on the ground floor it was extremely quite had everything we could possibly need.|The drawing room offers pre dinner drinks and an honesty bar at other times. The Gun Room menu was fantastic and presented beautifully. |The whole stay felt like a home from home. We will definitely be returning.

Yelp
Plas Dinas is one of those discoveries of a lifetime that just ticks all the right boxes. The standard and the quality of the product that Andy and Julian deliver seemingly effortlessly is what others with years more experience in the industry only dream of. From the feel of this old house and the welcome when you arrive, to your first drink in the magnificent drawing room by a blazing log fire,to the evening meal after a long drive,to your room and your first night's blissful sleep through to your first breakfast..all are top drawer
