The Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week - Eater NY

"So I had my first bike race on Saturday, and let’s just say both my ego and my stomach needed a bit of nourishment afterwards (I got dropped hard). The venue in question was Platia, one of Long Island’s best Greek restaurants. I ordered a whole grilled dourade ($29) with my family and pretty much finished it myself. There weren’t any flourishes here, just briny capers and good olive oil garnishing firm white flesh. A whole fish is my typical post-ride meal, and it never fails." - Eater Staff

Very clean and pretty in its simplicity. Bathrooms are clean which is very important to me. They have a parking lot so parking is easy. Service is courteous and friendly. They take Apple Pay as well - we forgot our wallet the day we went We got the calamari which was great, the meat platter which was just OK especially for the hefty price, the chicken and beef platter was OK as well. Overall, the food was OK when consider the price you pay.

Google
Overall, it was a pleasant experience. Excellent drinks, good food and fantastic service. Our only criticism was that the place was decorated nice enough, however lacked warmth. It was way too bright. I felt like I was inside a tent instead of a restaurant with a cool vibe. Our server was Maria was amazing! A real Rock Star! She was personable, helpful, excellent at her job and her positive energy was contagious! She definitely enhanced our dining experience and gave great recommendations. When we arrived, Nick greeted us with a fantastic smile.....when we left we were excited to share some positive feedback with the owner. However, he had no personality and could possibly care less. I am not sure if we will return. There are plenty of other options.

Google
Beautiful restaurant and wonderful service. Our party had seven people and all of us loved our food, large portions and decent prices. One of the women in our party was celebrating her birthday and then they brought her a free piece of cake that looked wonderful.

Had a really enjoyable early dinner here yesterday evening, starting with a glass of pinot grigio for my husband and the one rose on the menu for me, which was really nice, fruity and on the dry side. Didn't grab a photo of the perfectly fried calamari, which needed an extra squeeze of lemon and a dash of salt but was otherwise excellent. For entrees, I had the special of bakaliaros with skordalia, fried cod with the most garlicky, amazing skordalia and beets, and my husband enjoyed his chicken stuffed with spinach and feta, along with rice and lemon potatoes. We each took home leftovers. Our server Theodora was wonderful.

Google
wonderful time at platia! feels like greece in there and the food and service were great !

Google
The food was decent, but the overall experience fell short. Our server felt a bit pushy and special didn’t offer much value. Probably better off sticking with the regular menu if you go

Google
i want to highly recommend the restaurant Platia as i’ve live in the neighborhood for 25 years and it’s nice to see a place succeed for as long as they have! i dine in a lot but i also want to mention today’s takeout 🥡 order and how amazing the service and packing is and such good quality food.. ive been ordering for years and i absolutely love love Platia…

Google
Quick friendly service. Food is standard. The pita bread with hummus was delicuous. The appetizer grilled octopus is a bit salty and VERY soft.. can go into mushy! The fried eggplant and zucchini was very chewy and not got when came out... Though the tzatziki sauce was yummy not overly garlicy. The mousaka was okay... No light bulb popping! Overall, for its price and food... Will go back sparingly!

Yelp
Went on crowded Saturday dinner but quickly seated and food served with little wait, too. Whole grilled sea bass was super fresh and moist. Started with pan fried cheese app - delicious. Server recommended a very nice bottle of white wine that the two of us emptied fairly quickly. Not noisy, enjoyable evening. We'll be back soon.

Yelp
Food was tasteless. Waitress was rude and clueless. She never told us the specials. She took our order, brought us the food and never came back to ask if we needed anything, wanted another beverage or dessert. We had to flag her down to get the check. I would not recommend going there. I would recommend Santorini in Merrick. The food there is great and the staff is very friendly and attentive.

Yelp
Super cute place, pretty ambiance & great food! They brought warm pita with hummus to our table to start. We ordered the Greek meatballs with tzatziki sauce as an app. It was delish. We ordered beet salad and Greek salad with grilled chicken- all good. The bronzini was excellent, The prices were reasonable, the service was good. Parking was a bit tough- but we parked in the lot next door. It was a good experience and I would definitely go back.

Yelp
Tastefully decorated inside. Nice ambience. Friendly staff. Quick service. Reservation for Mother's Day . Seated right away. Sangria was yummy

Yelp
This is my second time here. First time was just me and hubby. This time we went with some people out of state for a birthday and it was excellent. My Greek mother was impressed with the decor and she enjoyed her food and we all thought our dishes were very very good. The waitstaff was great too. We will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
This place tastes just like Yia Yia's cooking. If you're a Greek, YOU NEED to try the food here. Service is quick and the food portions are enough to feed an army so go in hungry. The ambiance is very beautiful and feels like you are in a peaceful town in Greece. Great spot to go for a date or throw a party.

Yelp
My friends and I celebrated a friend's birthday here. It was a Saturday afternoon, and we actually had the whole place to ourselves. It was a very hot day, so we knew we would want to sit indoors. The decor is nicely set up inside, and there are a ton of tables with ample space between. The service was fantastic. Our food was brought out very quickly. I especially appreciated how the servers brought out the cake we had asked to refrigerate and even placed and lit the candles on the cake for us. The food was all fantastic. Many of us got the Greek salad, and some of us got the Yeeros dishes. The portions here are very big!! Even the "hand-held" yeeros, which was priced at $9, was a generous helping of food!! Great service and food and great people. I'd definitely recommend a visit here!

Mary K.

Yelp
we were a party of five. Most of the dishes were excellent. Those who had fish and souvlaki were pleased. I unfortunately wanted a home style dish and because it was Friday I assumed the moussaka would be freshly made for the weekend. I was also told that it was. This is something I make at home. it definitely was not freshly made and was very poorly reheated! I know how to make moussaka and how to reheat it so it's still moist and tasty. This may have been reheated a couple of times as there were very hard black crusty edges and the skins of the eggplant were dry and not pleasant to chew. The chop meat layer was dry and crumbly instead of a nice meat sauce layer. This is the first time I left half food in a restaurant to be thrown out. We have been here before and will return but I will stay with something grilled that doesn't require much skill.

Yelp

Yelp
A restaurant we're return to whether it is just our family or with friends. Each item we've tried was good. We enjoy their complementary bread as well :)

Yelp
The food here is amazing their lemon soup my kid constantly is asking for and everyone is very nice. I've tried ordering green from elsewhere and nobody makes the soup as good!

The salmon was delicious...the sides are whatever honestly...the salads were so good my fav was the marouli salada (all green lettuce with feta). The spanakopita was amazing i love a good spanakopita where its nice and crunchy on the outside and tastey on the in. The atmosphere is very very greek vaca and i loved it

Yelp
A fantastic outdoor dining option during the pandemic. Enormous tent that is well open to air with oversized fire heaters nicely distributed. Spacious and entirely ventilated. Last night was mild for late November and we were comfortable with light jackets on, but the upcoming frigid nights will require more layers and a hat for comfortable dining. The food here is delicious. Always has been. Drinks well made. They have at least 3 different whole fish on the menu which is not typical and appreciated.. I don't usually choose potatoes but the lemon potatoes here are a must. Presentation is beautiful. Servers all wearing masks, very pleasant atmosphere at a challenging time... Platia has gone the extra mile to make this all work and I hope that they hang in there because it's going to be a bumpy winter. As always, looking forward to returning.

Yelp
Since our local Mediterranean restaurant closed a few years ago, we have been searching for an inexpensive casual replacement and happened upon Platia Greek Kitchen restaurant. While not local nor inexpensive we thought we would give it a try (it's not too far away and not overly expensive). We first ordered a Greek salad to share which was pretty standard and very large. It turns out we really didn't need it as my meal came with a small portion of the salad. I ordered the Chicken Soulvaki) which also included a side in addition to the salad. It was quite good. My wife ordered a fish dish called Plaki and was disappointed. After working her way through the plate the waitress noticed she wasn't enjoining her meal and asked about it. My said she really did not care for it. The waitress said my waiter need to be happy and offered to bring her something else. Whe we said that was not necessary, the waitress insisted. So we said just bring a single shrimp soulvaki skewer. She brought and tire shrimp soulvaki dinner again. More over, the charged us for the less expensive shrimp dish and not the more costly fish. We left happy, full and lots of leftovers for another meal. We found our new (not so) local casual Greek place. Can't wait to return.

Yelp
No worries as we tent dined with friends last night. Tent sides were open and a nice ventilating breeze on a mild November evening. Propane heaters took any chill there may have been out of the air. Service definitely on point and any request from the table honored. We started with cocktails. I had an old fashioned with charred orange followed by another midway through dinner. The drink was well balanced and strong, walking back to the car became an adventure - and thankfully I was not the driver. We started with warm pita with both skordalia and hummus. Yum! My main was a dorade grilled with olive oil, lemon, and capers. I asked for whole fish - It arrived with an apology already deboned. Considering the drinks and their effect on my dexterity, was probably a blessing. Fun night, fine dining, great atomosphere and seemingly low risk.

Yelp
Paul L review about the gyro platter is spot on. Ordered the gyro platter tonight and it was horrible, little bacon bits is so true.

Yelp
I have been going to this restaurant for the past 4 years. It's amazing! The food is always delicious and the waitstaff is always friendly and attentive. During Covid-19 they turned the parking lot into outdoor seating. It was amazing! We actually had a small party for my MIL during the summer. We had about 18 people and they said they couldn't have a big table, could we do two tables and split the group. It was fine. The tables were next to one another, and everyone was thrilled. The mixed grill is NEVER a bad choice and all of the food is superb. The food is fresh and you never have to worry that you are going to make a bad choice! I would totally recommend this restaurant. It is one of my favorites!
google avatar

Steven K.

Yelp
This place feels like it's plucked right from central casting of the mom-and-pop Greek spot. To call it casual understates it. Really great seafood dishes. Service good- I asked for more pita about 5 times to dip in the various sauces and they obliged. There was a fly bothering us throughout the meal. We named him Nico and let him have the left over Greek fries.
google avatar

Cary R.

Yelp
I love the decor here! They have a parking lot which is great! I have been here twice once for a sit down lunch and once for a take out order. Upon being seated you are served complimentary pita and hummus. It is very delicious! For lunch they have a few lunch specials. I ordered a pork gyro as they don't have lamb or beef options, they have just chicken and pork. The pork was okay and overcooked which is okay by me. It was flavorful. Service was fine zero complaints. Second time I ordered takeout and ordered the same as my previous time there a pork gyro. It was overcooked like last time but burned. I did not enjoy it at all. The first time it was okay I've definitely had better but still it was okay. After the second time ordering it I know I won't be ordering it again. I'm not in any rush to go back here. I may come back and try an entree. The gyros are no go for me!

Yelp
Amazing food, unique ambiance and excellent service. Being part of a "picky" group the waiter kept a smile on his face and accommodated our "unique" requests. Atmosphere was nice and clean. Food was exceptional and came out in a timely manner. Wasn't rushed during the meal and my group and I had an amazing time. What a gem we stumbled upon. Can't wait to return.

Yelp
I went here today for lunch. I genuinely love Greek food and the Greek culture, so I was extremely excited to check out this place. When I walked in I wasn't greeted welcomely. Instead I was rudely asked what I needed by a man watching tv and eating pasta? He was not welcoming at all and if I owned a business I would not want that person representing my business and greeting my customers... A different person took my order. I wish I got his name but he was equally in a bad mood, as the man eating pasta. I felt very uncomfortable being a women surrounded by two men who were extremely hostile... I was unsure what to order because it was my first time there and instead of my waiter helping me he just insisted that I read the menu, without recommending anything. At this point I was ready to walk out but I was starving and had to return to work. Once I got my food and paid my bill, I left. No one said bye or thanks for coming, instead they both continued to watch television and neglect a customer. I am a local food critic and food blogger on social media, this restaurant will NOT receive any free promotion from me due to the experience I had. Additionally the pita bread that I ordered was burnt, has lettuce on it and was non edibles. I threw my entire order away. I wasted a total of $40 and that included a tip. I wish this business the best and I hope your staff gets more training.

Yelp
Five stars all around! Went for dinner and had a bunch of appetizers, delicious fish entrees and dessert. Friendly and helpful waitstaff. Authentic Mediterranean vibe. Plan to return soon!

Yelp
Overdue review as we've now enjoyed multiple times. Delicious lentil soup, hummus, pita, Greek salad, chicken souvlaki. Last time had grilled vegetables with the chicken will look to change things up next time. Son loved the salmon, chicken fingers and fries
google avatar

Alyssa N.

Yelp
Updating my review to 3 stars. After trying so many amazing Greek restaurants on Long Island this one did not give me that same amazing experience after my last visit. We came for dinner on Saturday at 5pm to an empty restaurant. We didn't feel very welcomed. Virginia was not helpful with the menu and had a slight attitude throughout our meal. We felt like we were bothering her with our questions. For the food I had the horiatiki salad with grilled salmon. The salad was ok, tomatoes were not fresh, feta was good. The salmon wasn't bad, grilled nicely. My boyfriend really enjoyed his ribeye. He said it was cooked perfectly and had the right amount of olive oil drizzled on top. He asked for French fries and our waitress did not mention they were more like potato chips. He did not like them. Overall, I would much rather go to Athenian in commack (where I am treated like family) or kyma in Roslyn before I come back here.
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
So so good!! The food was absolutely delicious. Best spanakopita I've ever had! Also the Greek yogurt with sour cherries was unreal. I loved that the staff gave us ample time between courses to talk and enjoy our night. Will definitely come back
google avatar

Janine P.

Yelp
Greek salad was amazing. The chicken souvlaki I was not so happy with. It was dark meat which I'm not used to with souvlaki. It was fatty and chewy so I could not eat it as it was not edible. The lemon potatoes were good but a little bland. The potatoes Seemed a little expensive for the size of the order too.
google avatar

Sona B.

Yelp
Delicious lunch at Platia recently! This is a vegetarian-perspective review, so I cannot comment on any of the meat or seafood. Such a cute place with decor that takes you straight to the Grecian islands. They have many small plate/appetizer selections that are vegetarian. The dips were delicious and fresh, and the Tirokafteri, with a slight spicy kick at the end, is the best we have ever had! The Greek salad was crisp, fresh and generously portioned. The kolokithokeftedes were crispy shredded zucchini balls and the tzatziki they are served with was very creamy. We also had some of the veggie sides, which were all tasty. I believe the only vegetarian entree option was grilled vegetables, and I wish they had a veg. mousaka but I was told they only have the meat version - hope they can consider this addition to their menu in the future! Overall, loved the food and ambience here and would certainly return!

Paul L.

Yelp
The saying a pictures speaks a thousand words, this is the gyro platter . It was the worst Greek food I ever had. The meat was like overcooked crumbled bacon bits
google avatar

Lindsey G.

Yelp
If you're in the mood for a greek food I highly recommend this place the chicken Yeeros and soulvaki is well seasoned and taste so good everything is always fresh if you have not tried this place out definitely do you will not be disappointed whatsoever!

Yelp
Visited Platia with my family and couldn't have been more impressed with everything about this restaurant- the food, the service, the menu are all right on point. Even more impressive is that we came here on Mother's Day as a party of 10 and still got outstanding food and service (holidays can be rough for some restaurants - not here. They had their regular dinner menu and it was excellent). Platia is serving some of the freshest fish that you will find on Long Island. Served either whole or filleted and every piece of fish on the table was outstanding- Bronzini, swordfish, dorado all killer. You want meat? They are doing that great too. The skirt steak was delicious and the lamb chops were really good too. Add very nice portion sizes and prices that fit this quality food and it's very hard not to love this place... Wait, how about the service? Really good. It feels like you're actually in Greece, eating at a friends home. I cant wait to return and sample some of the really authentic Greek options on this menu. It won't be long! FINAL UPDATE - Since I will NEVER be going back, my final comments are - save your $$$ and go anywhere else. The food was just ok and the service was as bad as it gets. $200 for 4 for greek food has to be spot on and it's not even close. They will be out of business by year end IMHO UPDATE - still good food and really big portions, but the service has taken a serious turn for the worse. Totally inattentive, more "diner like" then restaurant, and when the waitress brought our entrees to the table she announced "make some room" with the expectation that we would move the plates on the table ourselves. Finally, the table wasn't cleared or cleaned (see pics) before desert was brought to our table. There is no way to justify this at these prices. Probably won't be back for a while...
google avatar

Jasleen K.

Yelp
It was nice they had outdoor tent seating which was made nicely. The food is alright, nothing special, though the scallops and stuffed shrimps which was a special that day was good. The drinks were average. There was nothing much for vegetarians in my party. So in all it was an average place.
google avatar

Ray D.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots for Greek food. Anytime I go to another Greek restaurant it's just not as good. Lemon potatos are my favorite. Staff is friendly and food is incredible. My kids want to eat Platia every week. Mixed grill is the go to. Love this restaurant.
google avatar

Yelp
Let me say from the onset, Im hoping to raise my rating in the future, after trying a full meal. The mad Russian and I came in to escape the heat and only had a few things on a recent trip to the Fireman's carnival in the Syosset LIRR train station parking lot. At four in the afternoon, it was sweltering and we took ourselves and the baby into the cool and airy confines of Platia. Awesome cool colors and open floor plan set you right at ease. A glass of wine for my lovely bride and a nice cold beer for myself. Ahhhh. Relax. There were a few other parties in the restaurant and noise was surprisingly not loud at all. We opted for the grilled Octopus and some fried Greek cheese. Enough food to let us know to come back and enough to satisfy a pang. The service was great and we loved the ambience. Others I know rave about Platia and When we come back for a full meal, I hope to as well. Well Done!
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
Food is good, service...not so much. My fam and I came for an early dinner last Sunday. Our server would disappear for long periods of time because he was watching tv. Since he was distracted, he kept messing up our orders. The food was good though. I got a gyro platter and we also shared some apps (calamari, fried cheese) which were all tasty.

Elizabeth K.

Yelp
Really great food, always consistent! I always get pretty much the same thing (that doesn't speak to their menu more so that I tend to be boring and order my favorite every time lol). Service is great too! Usually we get takeout, and the food travels well and is always delicious! Definitely recommend the Platia Mac & Cheese!
google avatar

Yelp
Best outdoor dining experience I've had on Long Island since outdoor dining began, hands down. In my experience Platia is my #1 Cafe Al Dente in Oyster Bay #2 in terms of outdoor dining in the area.

Yelp
Bon G. and I have long awaited the opportunity to try Platia in Syosset and were glad we finally made it. We had a Dinner rezzy for 9pm on Saturday night and our table was available in a matter of minutes. We were approached by our friendly server immediately and ordered drinks. Bon had a Margarita and I a bottle of Retsina, my fav Greek wine...both came quickly and we embibed! The din of the restaurant was high, NYC style but it was a good thing...we could talk and not have to listen to next table conversations. To the food; for appys we got Spanakopita and Horitacki Salad...Best Spanakopita we have had in ages...hot, creamy and delish in a crispy phyllo shell...weighed 2 lbs and was very filling! Our mains were next: bon had Paidakia Dinner which was a beautiful plate of Baby Lamb chops, despite being a bit fatty tasted wonderful and were plentiful with side of Gigante Beans and mixed veggies...my dish was Tsipoura Dinner which was a beautiful whole Dorado cooked to perfection accompanied by Lemon Potatoes. Both dishes were wonderful!! We used our new Foodie Card from TSRC for a 10% discount which was graciously accepted and acknowledged by the owner...We appreciated the atmosphere, vibe, attention by staff and the kitchen for preparing such appetizing food,.,,.We will be back soon!

Yelp
Legit Greek spot. Huge salads, huge portions of everything in fact, and friendly service. Everything I've had here has been good.

Yelp
This time, this restaurant will surely last. Always hopeful for this heretofore ill fated location. What works is the locals in North Syosset keep nicer restaurants busy if good. A bit of a step up from other restaurants before, they offer fresh grilled fish and other greek food, absent the gyro on the skewer. More of a nice healthy place to go and would work for lunch, friends or even a date. Seems to have a good healthy crowd.

Yelp
After going to YEE event at Go Greek in Garden City months ago I was introduced to authentic Greek pork. Lisa E told me this is the best Greek place in town but I typically crave the local wild wig since that's what I'm used to when I think of Greek food. Today I was craving pork and decided to finally check this place out. I saw positive reviews and pics look delish. I ordered take out and as I walked in I noticed the cute decor w blue and white ocean theme. I ordered a yeero (pork gyro) with fries. The fries are unique shaped, crunchy outside, creamy inside ... perfection. I know it's Greek but this style of marinaded rotisserie pork reminds me of Spanish roast pork and I love it! I was startled when I left and didn't see tzatziki sauce on my wrap. To my surprise they serve it under the meat n toppings. It's backwards from American style Greek. They put pita, sauce , topping then meat. The sauce is thicker than I've had from other places but nice flavor and creamy. The wrap is huge w a lot of meat. I thought a wrap wouldn't be enough so I ordered fries on side which wouldn't have been needed but I'm glad I ordered it since they were so good . I noticed they didn't put fries on wrap as authentic Greeks do but maybe because I ordered them on side. Overall I have to say that I'm highly impressed and satisfied. I wasn't expecting to enjoy my meal as much as I did. I plan to return and recommend this place to my co workers. The food was amazing and nice decor so I would like to eat in and explore more of the menu ... To be continued ...

Marc B.

Yelp
Greek salad and zucchini and eggplant chips were good. The hummus was so so. My girlfriends salmon was dry and flavorless. The mushy vegetables are French fries sucked. The waiter pushed me to have the " special" sea bass instead of the Branzino which I originally wanted was terrible. Tasted liked it was cooked last week and warmed up tonight. Not reminiscent of the Pliati I remember. The best thing was the $12 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Won't be going back so soon.

Panos A.

Yelp
Excellent! The food was delicious, the stuff very pleasant the decor made you think you are in Greece. Service was quick and menu selection covered most spectacular Greek dishes, I will go again when in the area.

Yelp
There was no parking in their small lot Monday night, but a handwritten sign at the entrance to their large outdoor tent directed us to park in the bank's parking lot next door. The signs in the banks lot warned against getting towed away, but we took the risk. We went with another couple, who have been there many times for the fish (they have three varieties of whole fish). We were treated very well by our waitress (our friends even got hugs). I had a lemon soup to start and it was okay, but very plain. My wife had a Greek salad to start and had to take half of it to go. My wife and I ordered fish entrees. She got the salmon. I ordered the "plaki," which is typically cod (or other "catch-of-the-day") under tomato sauce with onions and potatoes, but this place made "lemon potatoes" with it. My fish was thin. My wife and I both tasted the lemon potatoes and didn't like them. One of our friends ordered the lamb chops ($44) and was happy with them. My plaki was $32. We didn't have dessert or coffee, but the bill per couple, with tax and tip, was $120. I can't say it was worth it.

Yelp
Delicious greek and Mediterranean food. Family run and super nice people. Excellent service, really well appointed decor. Upscale but the food is downhome.
