Montreal’s Best Chinese Restaurants | Eater Montreal

"Verdun favourite Hong Mère has its legions of loyal followers in the neighbourhood digging the restaurant’s mix of Dongbei (northern Chinese) and spicy Sichuan fare, alongside a roster of cold dishes rarely seen in Montreal. Try the Dongbei-style la pi (a cold vegetable salad with slippery rice noodles), Dongbei lao hu salad (crunchy veggies with a tart dressing), and the scallion pancakes." - Ivy Lerner-Frank

Went with a non Chinese friend. We didn't order spicy dishes cause my friend cannot have spicy food. Overall the food was okay. Both the beef and pork had too much potato starch. It didn't meet my expectations (heard from friends that it was really good) tho. However my friend loved the dishes. One potential reason could be we didn't order the classic spicy dishes that I'd like. I'd go with my Chinese friends to order more classic dishes to see how I like the restaurant. Giving it a ⭐⭐⭐⭐ considering that the dishes we ordered weren't really those I'd like, which might have impacted how I liked the food. If I can give a half rating, I might do 3.5 :) Giving ⭐⭐⭐⭐ rating to Service cause the cashier explained that they couldn't do % for tips anymore due to the new law, and suggested that I could change the number I'd like, which made me feel like I should give more, despite that fact the lowest default tip was already about 18%. But.. I might have misinterpreted..

I’m so happy I discovered this place through one of my best friends last year. Whether it’s your classic North American Chinese classics or more authentic Chinese dishes, the flavours are fantastic. Their portions are also very generous considering how affordable it is. I’ve been once in person and taken out twice. And each time the food was spectacular.

The julienned potato, tofu, eggplant. Eggplant was the highlight but everything was good. It was nice to sit outside but the air conditioner was on too high inside

My favorite Northeastern Chinese food in the Western hemisphere. My family has roots in that area in China and I don’t care what anyone else says - this place tasted like home. My husband and I live in Boston and drove here for a long weekend to celebrate my birthday…and everything from the server in the back busy storing inventory while shouting welcome to us in Chinese to the taste of every dish…I don’t remember tasting this kind of flavor outside of China. Get the traditional Northeastern Chinese plates like 大拉皮 or 锅包肉, we added on a specialty Chicken dish that the chef recommended and didn’t regret it. Licked the plates clean and we’ll be back every year 😉

This restaurant has found the balance between authentic Chinese food liked by Chinese people and westernized dishes appealing to non-Chinese customers. While it is not mind blowing, it’s a fair value for the area. It looks cleaner and bigger than most Chinese restaurants.

We came here for dinner and ordered three dishes: the stir fried eggplant with onions and bell pepper, the chicken with spicy house sauce, and the fish in preserved cabbage broth. Nice big portions. The eggplant was very flavourful and had a nice texture (i.e that special texture you get when food is cooked in a wok at high heat, not easily achieved at home). The chicken was nicely caramelized and very delicious. But the soup was too salty for our liking. The service was quick and attentive. Will happily come back to try other dishes on the menu.

A last minute addition to our plans that satisfied our hunger and then some! We definitely had eyes bigger than our stomach here as each plate we ordered was quite large. Likewise the menu itself has many great options to choose from which made it difficult to narrow down our choices. Once we did so it didn't take long for them to be under our chopsticks as we were served pretty fast. We went home with leftovers that would last us for several more meals so we feel like we got our money's worth.

Fried spinach was terrible- sent it back. Other dishes, eggplant and short ribs were very good. Good portions size. Waiter kept forgetting to bring ice bucket for our wine.
