Laid-back energy, high-level cocktails. Draft and shaken signatures flow alongside a rotating pop-up food window. Nationally honored by Liquor.com and celebrated by local critics, it’s the Grove hangout where fun and craft actually co-exist.

Another great destination in the Grove! The mural outside of their building is beautiful. The space is eclectic with 3 separate places to eat, including a patio. We chose to hang out inside and enjoy some Chooch's chicken nuggets and fries. I really could've shared the fries since they were so large. I prefer skinny fries myself, but the chicken was fantastic! I opted for the small chicken and it was plenty. The sauces were fresh too; I loved the ranch. The staff came out and talked with us and were genuinely curious about our opinions on the food. We even talked about our favorites in St. Louis. I recommend this fun spot with your friends!

It's cheaper to drink beer than the non-alcoholic options or at least the $4 day drinking lager they have on tap. I had three of those along with some fried tofu, fries and chicken bites. Midwest Dani is one of the incredible bar tenders working here but she alone makes this place worth visiting again and again. They do live music their bathrooms are colorful. One employee was wearing a Tyrese Halliburton shirt and Baltimore Orioles hat. I attempted to talk hoops with him but he wasn't too friendly. Better to talk with Danielle instead.

Came by the other day for a concert. The patio is large and private with plenty of room to sit and relax between sets. The drinks were great and reasonably priced. We didn’t have any food but it all looked and smelled amazing. Bathrooms were clean and easily accessible. The bar staff was very pleasant and quick. It’s towards the “outskirts” of the main places in the Grove so parking was very easy. The downside is that it gets VERY hot and stagnant in the concert room because there isn’t much ventilation. The tickets were bought at the door so I’m not sure if they keep track of how many they are able to sell for the space. It was packed to the brim. Still a great time with some breaks for fresh air, but something to keep in mind if you’re sensitive to that like I am.

Google
One of the best spots in south city. Chicken is always great. Drinks are fast. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Most impressively, they can pull off two music acts in the same small location incredibly well and consistently.

Google
This is a place you have to experience for yourself! The artwork, stickers, funky decor, & arcade games are so fun! The stage is really nice, with a window overlooking the Grove sign. (Profesional lighting & sound engineer onsite.) The staff here take the cake though, everyone was extremely nice & go above and beyond! My personal favorite is the Eat Duck Bill restaurant located inside. They have CELIAC SAFE wonderful gluten-free food options that are delicious! They also served the gluten-free food on a separate tray when bringing out the dishes. I could eat here everyday. (Great vegan options as well.)

Phenomenal show there August 23rd!!

Google
Platypus gets some cool shows if you can stand being roasted with the indoor 90° heat and no airflow. The food is some overpriced mediocrity geared toward impressionable St. Louis trust fund hipsters who don't care if they pay $20 for popcorn chicken. There always seems to be a DJ on the bar side blasting techno which bleeds through into the non-soundproofed performance space. Any soft passages will be spoiled by bass thumps bleeding through the wall. It seems very disrespectful to the artists and show attendees. Five stars for the bands who unwittingly get booked into playing this joke of a venue and two stars for the venue because I'm feeling charitable & the bar service was decent considering the conditions.

Google
Platypus is a gem of a spot that perfectly blends great food, strong cocktails, and a consistently electric music scene. Whether you’re stopping in for a casual bite or staying for the late-night energy, it’s the kind of place that delivers every time. The bartenders are clearly passionate about their craft putting in real work behind the bar to mix up quality cocktails. One standout is Dani, whose energy and genuine warmth are a breath of fresh air. She adds a personal touch that makes the experience feel welcoming and memorable. With a rotating lineup of fire DJs, live bands, and curated shows, there’s always something exciting happening. Platypus has become a go-to spot for good vibes, great drinks, and even better people. Definitely worth checking out.

Yelp
I love the cocktail creations at Platypus! They are always fun, with interesting ingredients and combinations. Walk into nice open space with a large bar. Bartenders roaming around the space taking orders and answering questions. I like to peruse the large chalkboard with the options. You place your order at the bar and wait for them to serve it up. We have sat out on the patio which is a nice space in cooler weather but since it was so hot we decided to eat in the room adjacent to the bar. It has pinball machines, high top tables, booths, a large window, and Eat Duckbill window for food! First time we tried the food, and it was great. We were there a little early so only a few tables occupied. My drink was delicious and love the atmosphere

Yelp
Such a fun spot in the grove. Have stopped in on multiple occasions. Great for a fun cocktail, Karaoke sesh, dancing, and even a late night snack. The service is always great even when they are packed. Such a fun spot at the Grove.

Yelp
I went here one evening and it was lovely! There was a DJ playing, it wasn't too crowded yet, and the patio was beautiful. Drinks were pretty good, I did not order any food. The platypus decor around the bar was such a lovely touch!

Yelp
Oh man, if you haven't been to Platypus in the Grove, you're seriously missing out. This place has quickly become my absolute favorite bar in St. Louis. The vibe is super laid-back and the staff is so fun. Platypus was opened in late 2021 by Meredith Barry. Meredith is incredibly talented and she's also one of the kindest people you'll ever meet. You might recognize her from Netflix's "Drink Masters," where she showcased her exceptional mixology skills. The bar itself has received national recognition, being honored as the "Best Under-the-Radar Bar" by Liquor.com. It's no surprise, given the expertly mixed drinks and the friendly, dive-bar feel that makes everyone feel at home. There's always something going on at Platypus whether it's a DJ or karaoke or the staff clowning around. I love spots that build community like that. Protips: Take a pic by the Love Rainbow art outside and definitely go into the bathroom in the corner.

Yelp
As st. Louis as st. Louis gets. If you're looking for dope locals, eclectic decor, a bit of pin ball, and, of course, one of the most well executed bar programs in the lou, you go to platypus. This place is not for the faint of heart. This is for the gritty, the real, and the lovers of hidden gems. The bar tenders know what they're doing. Grab a classic or snag one of their more creative endeavors. There is something for everyone here, and if you don't know what you want, the folks behind the bar got you, just trust em. From happy hour, to your party destination, or maybe even a night cap platypus is a st louis staple with a diverse crowd sharing smiles, sips, and memories. If you're in town for 1 night and need a drink platypus, unequivocally, needs to be at the top of your list. If you live here, and haven't been I suggest going yesterday. Culture yourself, immerse yourself, baptize yourself. Because, one trip will turn into 2 and 2 into 20!

Yelp
Great time taking in live music. No waitstaff, so grab and go at the bar. Got a local tap that was good. Staff were friendly. Parking is off street free, but could be limited. Atmosphere in the old building located in The Grove was just what I was looking for. The hood is mixed on homes, but I felt safe. I did get food from Eat Duck Bill which is a walk up inside this establishment under another Yelp listing. I will absolutely return. 4.5 rounding down with no waitstaff.

Yelp
Came in on a Tuesday evening around 730. It wasn't busy in the bar area, but it looked like there was more action in the area adjacent to the bar. Craft menu seemed kind of limited to me, and it's written on the fancy chalkboard on the wall. Atmosphere has a fun, hip vibe. I had the Cioco Knows and hubby had the Grand Scheme. The presentation was gorgeous, and both cocktails were tasty. One thing I did not like, and for which I deducted a star- no prices are listed on anything. I HATE that. It's so tacky to ask how much a cocktail is (at least to me), so we ordered blindly, not knowing what the tab would be. 2 cocktails came to $28. They were great, don't get me wrong, but I don't know that they were worth $14 each. Cool place to check out if you've never been.

Yelp
TONY SAPUTO IS A GD LEGEND. It ain't for the old folks, decibel levels are wicked. Wish I had the ears of a 25 year old again. But damn, it's always worth the tinnitus hangover!

Yelp
Drink Platypus, Eat Duckbill Give me neon lights, Chooch's Popcorn Chicken, arcade games, and "platio" seating any night of the week! Self-described as "an every person watering hole," Platypus is a neighborhood bar planted at the west entrance of The Grove. Eat Duckbill is the food counter found inside! The cocktails are ART! And the popcorn chicken? Bite-sized brilliance! Butchered and hand-breaded in-house, these chicken-thigh nuggets are crispy, juicy, and accompanied by an incredible lineup of condiments. I especially suggest the Agave Mustard, but be sure to try them all!

Yelp
Coolest spot in the grove or at least top 3. DJ kept the place jumping and the serving was outstanding. Specialty drinks I tried were amazing, and totally not something I'd ever normally order. Foods on site too, pinball machines, patio. Everything you could ask for.

Yelp
Love it here on Thursday nights! The venue is great! Spacious, but intimate if you want to head to a different room...but I love the Thursday night playlist! I also love the bartenders...Alice is my very favorite though! They even have late night snacks until 12:30am!

Jeff J.

Yelp
I love this venue/bar/space/chicken place. I've seen a concert here the djs are fun and the drinks are the best part besides the wonderful women behind the bar serving up amazing cocktails and good energy. 10/10
google avatar

Yelp
Love the vibe here! I just sat at the bar and enjoyed myself. It was very lively up until closing. The karaoke is fun it keeps the energy up. Bartenders make sure everyone is okay with drinks. Reasonable priced. Fun cocktail list. Not exactly my type of cocktails very spirit forward but they're very creative. Suds n buds was my preference semi sweet and I liked the little ice cream ball garnish. kuma hagu was interesting and got drank. Only complaint it was very very warm in there but I still had a great time

Yelp
10/10 The bar drinks, the relaxed atmosphere, and the mix of events and activities would make this a regular spot for me if I lived in St. Louis. The food is awesome, too. Great gluten free and vegan options.

Yelp
I came here on a whim with some friends on a Saturday night and I'm glad I did! I ordered a whiskey based cocktail off their wall menu and it was expertly crafted. It was an unusually cool evening for spring and we were able to warm up around the fire outside. When we came back in a DJ had started and the music was great. We planned on leaving at that time but ended up staying until midnight dancing and enjoying more cocktails!

Yelp
great ambience paired with amazing cocktails and knowledgeable bartenders! I have always had a great time here. The patio is a great spot to sit in the summer, and the inside is adorable as well.

Yelp
So much fun! A good place for adult to go without it being a super wild environment. I loved it and will definitely go back with friends.

Yelp
What a cool and comfortable place to go for a specialty cocktail! Platypus is located on a corner in The Grove. I love the space with large windows for people watching! When you enter, there are some tables, but the main focus is the large bar in the center of the room. Staff is very welcoming and makes you feel very comfortable even if it is your first time! They have an excellent beer, wine and whiskey list, but the star of the show is the cocktails! The cocktail menu is on the large wall. I love how the menu is very large and has detailed descriptions of each unique cocktail. The bartender was also very helpful and answered any questions we had. I tried several cocktails and each was unique and delicious! While here, you MUST eat at Eat Duckbill, which is located inside Platypus! The bar area and staff have a very cozy and welcoming vibe and I am looking forward to returning and trying some more cocktails! They also have live music!

Yelp
I really liked visiting Platypus last week! The atmosphere was pretty chill and laid back. The house music was loud and I was having a hard time talking to my friends, but I guess I am just getting old? The cocktails are really tasty, especially the Gin and Tease! Order at the bar and keep your tab open because you are going to want to stick around a while! If you want food, they have a back room where you can order some quick items (mostly friend). They have a jug of water so that you can get your own water if needed. Lots of seating and lots of room for hanging out with friends. The night we went, we were pleasantly surprised to get live music from 2 DJ's who played 90's and 00's music which we loved! Def plan to go back on another Wednesday night to experience it all over again! Street parking can be hard to find and you may have to walk a few blocks. But once you get inside, it is worth it.

Yelp
Rounding up from a 3.5 - will def be going back to this cute lil grove bar. drinks were GREAT. I wasn't sure what to order and the bartender asked what kind of spirit and flavors i liked and whipped up the last word cocktail which was so good- another person in the party ended up ordering it as well. Next drink i asked her for something similar and she made a gin based drink again but more floral and it was also so good. each drink was ab $11 food was from the connected business duckbill- menu included fried tofu, cauliflower, brussels, fries, popcorn chicken. i wanted to try it all! definitely NOT clean eating but oh boy so yummy for a lil treat. plenty of sauce options to pick from. I've heard about platypus's great drinks and i think i was anticipating a more upscale vibe but it had more of a bar feel with loud music (and a dj who came around 9 pm). plentyyyyy of seating around.

Yelp
Platypus is conveniently located in the grove right across from Urban Chestnut. My fiancé & I love trying new bars for more "laid back" date nights. We are both suckers for funky cocktails, and Platypus's drink menu did not disappoint! The menu changes frequently (apparently almost daily), which makes each visit fresh and exciting. Between the two of us we tried almost every cocktail on the menu, and each one was balanced & unique. Bartenders are all attentive & timely. Their music / playlist was also eclectic & fantastic! Next door is a restaurant (Eat Duckbill), and you can meander between the two spaces with your food & drink. The popcorn chicken & fried tofu were insanely delicious! We also had the fries & caramelized Brussels, which were also yummy. They have a great selection of dipping sauces. We can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Neat spot where people let their funk out. Definitely unpretentious with a down to earth clientele. Bartenders are friendly, knowledgeable, and definitely recognize their regulars. Cocktails have always been tasty and rotate more than I change clothes.

Yelp
I came here for the voter registration event and missed it by 5 minutes, but the bartender, Ryan, was pretty dope and the atmosphere is excellent so I stayed a while. Definitely coming back Update: ALL the bartenders- 10/10! Great people. Please don't tell the other bars this might be my new fav spot
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
This place is pretty cool and pretty big has a second stage and does karaoke on Monday nights small food selection, back patio for when it's nice out and tasty food
google avatar

Walter W.

Yelp
This is a cool spot in the far end of the grove near Kingshighway. They have a great cocktails list (alcoholic and non alcoholic). The chicken bites and fries from duckbill is a must

Lenoy W.

Yelp
Great cocktails, great staff, and great vibes! The chicken nuggets are salt bombs, buyers beware.
google avatar

Amanda D.

Yelp
Love Platypus! Great staff, fun environment, always have good jams goin, Duckbill runs the kitchen and who DOESNT love chicken bites with all the sauces + fries + brussels... yes, please! They also have tofu bites for anyone not into eating meat. The cocktail menu changes often, and features multiple spirits/variety. Wednesday nights are a personal fav with the dj jams goin... but the vibes here are always right!
google avatar

Haley M.

Yelp
Fun fun fun fun fun little place in the grove. Creative drinks from the bartender, awesome music to grove to. Absolutely will be back

Yelp
Ema was friendly when we stepped in the door the rest of the staff was kind of standoffish didn't wanna welcome others! But Ema was amazing!!!

Yelp
Omg Mondays are my jam. Karaoke night!!! The service is great in my opinion. Never had any issues!!! Also love the food!!! Now the cook definitely knows the definition of Hot and Ready!! A great spot for a great time!!

Yelp
A fun, social bar with really good food, full bar, plenty of space inside and a nice patio area outside.
google avatar

Terry G.

Yelp
Came here on a hump day with some gal pals! Parking was tricky tricky, we were all very late due to the lack of parking in the bustling grove. That was probably the biggest downside. The bartender was so nice and came up with some very creative cocktails to ease our Wednesday Scaries. If you find yourself here, would recommend ordering " the last word" or " the final word" as I cannot recall which termination of the word word was used. It was a bit noisy for us, but we sat very close together, and kept our ears peeled. There was ample seating options, including booths, bar, seats, and high tops. My friend ordered the fried chicken and the fries, and I would come back and order these every day if it wouldn't raise my A1c so much Overall, recommend for a group of friends, who don't mind a little bit of noise in the background
google avatar

Keli H.

Yelp
This is one of our favorite places to stop by for a night cap or for a pre-party drink. They constantly change their cocktail menu and everyone is always very friendly and willing to explain each ingredient to you. Outside of one mishap of a fall pumpkin cocktail in 2022, everything we've ever had has been well-balanced and delicious. It's located in the Grove and has a heavy metal feel so prepare for some loud music and raucous patrons. Believe it or not, they have an amazing Pina Colada, which is definitely worth getting but stay away from the Miami Vice. It'ss not quite what you think it is i.e. sipping cocktails on a beach. If you are hungry, make sure to try Duckbill which is located in the same building and has delicious popcorn chicken as well as a variety of vegan options. Absolutely love this cocktail bar!
google avatar

Erin R.

Yelp
Had such a great time here with some friends in a Wednesday evening! The bar tender was so kind and friendly, and really took the time to speak with us regarding what drinks we each might like. The cocktails were amazing! The only things that made the review 3 stars instead of 5 would be: (1) the music was a bit loud for a Wednesday evening, and it was slightly hard to hear one another; (2) the music types ranged from screamo to pop, which made the vibe a bit confusing; and (3) the parking was extremely limited (I may or may not have ended up parking on a permit only street). Still, I would definitely consider returning here on a weekend night out in the Grove, as I imagine it would be very fun to have some drinks here when the loud music wouldn't be as much of a problem.
google avatar

Liza F.

Yelp
Great corner location. Knowledgeable bartenders, fun banter and wonderful cocktails! We had an espresso martini and an old fashioned, both 10/10! Cute date night spot for drinks
google avatar

Carly B.

Yelp
It was a nice bar, loud with the live music but fun. The patio was chill, beer was cold, and the bartenders were friendly. What more could you need? Check out the bathrooms!

Renee R.

Yelp
My friend picked this place for a Birthday get together on a Monday night for the karaoke. It was my first time here and I plan on never coming back. Aside from the music being ungodly loud everything was fine until we went to close our tab. Both of the bartenders very blatantly looking to help anyone at the bar except for us including some old guy helping himself to the garnish jar and also serving a drink to someone that wasn't even there. It was beyond absurd. Maybe they don't like gay people. If you don't want us there, let us close our tab faster so we can freaking leave!
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
THE BEST Old Fashioned I've Ever Had! I can't shout that loud enough. They have an awesome Bourbon selection and I went with Buffalo Trace. Stopped in random on a Saturday around 4:30p and it wasn't crowded, which was great. Sun was out so we sat on the patio. They make their own cherries and OMG, so good. I tried to talk one of the owners into giving me cherries to go, but alas that didn't fly. LOL. All the more reason to come back and have more Old Fashioned! The care that the mixologist took in making this cocktail, you could tell they were a professional and I enjoyed watching the master at work. This is where cocktails go to Live!
google avatar

Amber F.

Yelp
The food and music are amazing! Bonus points for the vegan options and mocktails! Will continue to return. Limited parking.
google avatar

Audrey B.

Yelp
Platypus replaced what used to be the U.R.B. It is a cocktail lounge with casual eats in the back. It has an eclectic feel with interesting, random decor and very random seating. There are some normal tables, the bar, a couple of large kitchen tables, and a couple of booths. The bartenders are super friendly and accommodating. The featured cocktail menu is limited, but the bartenders are willing to make other things too. There is also beer. Good music, dim lighting, casual vibes. The food is from Eat Duckbill and it is yummy. I am a vegetarian, so I was quite pleased to see multiple options for me!
google avatar

Kaylee V.

Yelp
Love the atmosphere and will definitely be back. Bartender was very friendly and told me all about the n/a spirits that they offer. Love that they're inclusive to those who just want to enjoy a crafted cocktail without the high ABV. They also hold comedy open mic nights every now and then. Great addition to the Grove neighborhood!
google avatar

Emerine C.

Yelp
Went here with a group of friends for some drinks. The bar is unique and the DJ played good music. Drinks are pricey, particularly their house cocktails which don't have the price next to them on their menu. Duckbill is the restaurant portion attached to platypus and we sat there and got some fries which were delicious.
google avatar

Benu R.

Yelp
This place has the best cocktails in all of St. Louis the drink menu changes every week and it's designed by different bartenders. It is always a treat to try the newest and greatest creation plus very entertaining to watch them prepare the best bartenders in St. Louis hands-down.
google avatar

Yelp
Incredible cocktails made by some of the best bartenders in St Louis with delicious fried foods on a nice back patio.. need I say more?! This new(ish) spot is my current favorite place in The Grove. I love every cocktail on the board, even The NA are incredible!

Yelp
Great drinks, music, and entertainment! Highly recommend for a low key night with high quality food and drink!

Yelp
Great drinks and nice chill vibe! Small menu with big taste! Definitely will be a returning customer!

Yelp
Karaoke is a great on Monday nights! Really fun cocktails that are constantly revolving. Great place to sit and chat and the food right next door is delicious.

Yelp
Platypus is my new local date night obsession! This craft cocktail bar is owned by two renowned St. Louis mixologists who have created a trendy cocktail lounge with a comfortable casual vibe. Platypus specializes in perfecting a few cocktails in hopes customers will try something new each time their menu changes. I'm not a huge margarita or bourbon person but the drinks I got were so unique, refreshing, and beautiful! When you're there, do not skip out on the snacks from Eat Bill Duck in the back of the bar! The chef has perfected his recipe and taken chicken and fries to a whole new level. Already planning our return to try Platypus' latest cocktail changes!
