Playa Bowls Expands to Northeastern University Campus Fall 2019 | Eater Boston

"A second Boston-area franchise scheduled to open this fall at 277 Huntington Ave., next to Starbucks on Northeastern University's campus. The new location will offer a menu similar to the BC shop—in-house-blended Brazilian acai bowls plus other bases (pitaya, banana, chia pudding, coconut, oatmeal, greens), customizable toppings, smoothies, and juices—and is part of a franchise network with locations in 11 states and Puerto Rico that often targets college neighborhoods. Housed in a former tanning salon, the large space will undergo extensive renovations to include a dining area and a chill zone with a fireplace and ample seating for students and patrons to relax." - Dana Hatic

This was my first time in today. I had never had this before and I wanted to try something new. My cashier was amazing very kind and understanding. At The Mango berry bowl it was very good. Everything was made with love and care , I have social anxiety so every time I buy food outside I always leave, but I felt very comfortable so I decided to dine in the area was very clean no dirt the bathroom was clean as well. I’m very glad I chose this place to eat today I will definitely be back thank you for you’re such an amazing experience.

Google
Lovely cafe for breakfast or just to enjoy a healthy meal! Super refreshing bowls and all the menu is vegetarian and vegan friendly. Great service and friendly staff. Would love if they also serve coffee that would be the perfect meal for me! The menu has unlimited options of bowls so I will have to be back to try more options!

Google
This place made me so happy. Omw to the Y I decided to check this place out. Super cute. Atmosphere is on 1000. The staff is so welcoming and friendly. You have to try Playa Bowl

alessandra T.

Google
The playa bowl here is amazing. I got a half acai and half stupid cupid. I got a nutella bowl. The staff here is extremely nice, and the place is really clean.

Google
on the pricey side (11-13$), but amazing acai, pitaya, and mango bowls!! my personal fav is the "electric mermaid" for the wide variety of fruit, and occasionally ill get half acai, half pitaya! good amount of fruit and high quality, the granola also is nut free if you have allergies!! (would not buy the oatmeal though for that price that's overpriced) if you come often, it's so worth it to sign up for their free loyalty program and u can get a discount based on your points (also the first day of the month you get double)! it's always best if you can make ur own price wise, but otherwise i'd def recommend!

Linda G.

Google
i love this plzce so much. all the workers are so nice and the food is affordable and yummy and filling! thank you guys! would def reccomend. im actually here today again. see you soon!

Google
Been here a week after it opened. It’s bang opposite the Northeastern campus. There are a lot of options and the staff are super polite. They help you out with choices. My açaí bowl was splendid to say the least. The prices aren’t way off and I’ll rate the place as a 5 on 5.

Christopher Amill F.

Google
I been a playa bowl customer for over 10 years and I have never order something and had to wait over 20 minutes bad language in Spanish I’m Latino I understand language and didn’t wash the blender before making my bowl what if I’m allergic to what ever was made before my bowl strawberry look expired no sense of cleanliness. One chitchatting with a guy that wasn’t even a customer vulgar language this place out of control. Clearly has lost it playa bowl model. What happened to this place. Dumped the bowl didn’t feel safe to eat, and went to different location better service and definitely better hygiene. SMH VERY DISAPPOINTING

Yelp
" Staff is rude they close bathrooms by 9:00 pm " I got a mucho mango staff was rude . They had the music playing on the phones and talking amongst themselves. So I had to repeat my order and was ignored by their conversation and music. When I finally got their attention; I placed my order and paid . Decided to walk to bathroom area at 9:00 pm they said it was closed . However they open until 10:00 pm. It was basically screamed at me as I was walking down towards the bathroom area , lol.

Yelp
I love playa bowls. I'm from New York so I could only get them when we played in NJ tournaments.. so finding out they're in Boston made me so happy. The menu is extensive and the ingredients taste so fresh. I do think they are expensive but you get a ton of toppings which I appreciate. I always get the nutaya bowl but switch the cocoa nibs for strawberries.

Yelp
Playa bowl is my favorite place to go. I tried this new location today and it was around northeastern university. The employees were very nice and the restaurant was extremely clean and has multiple seating available. My go to order at playa bowl is half açaí and half mango base. I topped it with strawberry and coconut flakes. The bowl also has granola and Nutella. They were very generous with the portion they gave me. Their bowl tasted so good and refreshing. I love this location and if you never tried a playa bowl you should definitely check their location out.

Yelp
Even on a chilly weekend day when the highest temperature was 35 F, this place was still pretty busy, but the time from the door to walking out with my bowl was less than 10 minutes. Service was fast, and the staff were very friendly. I tried the Boost bowl ($13) which seemed like one of the more nutritious and protein-packed options on the menu and also looked pretty cool with the spirulina color. It was tasty and filling, and I think the cashew milk gave it a nice smooth creamy texture.
google avatar

Hursuong V.

Yelp
A great summer treat! The acai is blended so creamy! I think a bowl is perfect to share between two people but it will run you close to $15 for one bowl.
google avatar

Carlie C.

Yelp
Playa Bowls has a great selection of different bowls, oatmeal's and smoothies. I love the oatmeal energy bites that they sell as well. Unfortunately I find that the açaí based bowls are often time incredibly sweet and have too much added sugar. I also find the menu to be very overpriced for what you get. The last time I went I ordered the Pura Vida bowl, and they charged me extra to add almond butter but they barely added any almond butter. There is usually plenty of searing inside.
google avatar

Ian M.

Yelp
Service was quick and simple. There is a wide variety of choices and add-ins. Very tropical feel.

Yelp
This location is okay. Either a hit or miss in terms of quantity received. Sometimes my bowls are packed, other times it's barely reaching the top of the bowl rim. Ambiance is okay, music is loud and there are also seats in the back for groups to sit at. Not great for studying but good for a quick smoothie bowl break. I'm only giving this place a 4 because I'm a sucker for smoothie bowls and playa never fails to deliver on a good tasting bowl. I admit that I always cross my fingers for a good bowl when I order here, but I willingly take the chance :') Your girl just wants a smoothie bowl and is too lazy to make her own. If I weren't a smoothie bowl fanatic, I'd probably give this place a 3. The service is quite unpredictable and can be disappointing (in terms of food quantity and sometimes they overfill the bowl with granola to compensate for lack of smoothie).

Edgar R.

Yelp
I've been coming to Playa bowls for years and this is the first year where they can't seem to get their acai consistency right. It's just way too runny and i just got the bowl, unfortunately this is the second time that i've gotten a bowl here and it's runny. I left a review on my last visit and didn't get a response. at all. Competition for Acai is high currently and i would be going elsewhere for my bowls.
google avatar

Melanie G.

Yelp
These are the best smoothie bowls!! They have different flavored smoothie bowl bases and they don't skimp on fruit or granola. All of the ingredients tasted super fresh. The store is a cute beach/surf theme. They even have free stickers by the register. The staff is super nice! Would definitely recommend.

Yelp
These summer specials were DELICIOUS. I got the glow bowl (half aloe, half coconut base) and my roommate got the Mango Piña Colada Smoothie. Glow bowl was DELICIOUS, strongly suggest the half aloe/coconut combination. These were summer specials though. The toppings were also perfect, nothing too heavy/sweet like Nutella drizzle. I went to NEU for school, and the main reason I didn't go here often was simple: the prices. Their service is also terrible, they are very understaffed and often times the staff doesn't know what's going on and if your order is wrong. The cold brew coffee or whatever is also not good. I think their bowls are good once in a while, but it was never my "go-to" spot or whatever. Not worth the price for sure. However, I must say I do enjoy their seasonal treats like for Valentines Day or Summer etc.

Hailey M.

Yelp
I love the açaí bowls here. However the service I had today was terrible. There were 5 people working and they had no urgency at all. I understand being busy and taking a few minutes for my order but I was here for 30 minutes. My sister got a smoothie and it had unblended chunks of fruit at the bottom.
google avatar

Ellie W.

Yelp
Cute vibes and a huge selection of different bowls and smoothies. I really enjoyed their coconut bowl with Nutella. Lots of seating and pleasant atmosphere. Service was quick!
google avatar

Amanda G.

Yelp
Love this place! Fruit is always fresh and the vibes inside the establishment are always nice. They have music and everything is beach themed, it's really cute. I will say though, they can be skimpy with the peanut butter sometimes. Other than that it's pretty good and the people are nice.
google avatar

Sarah Y.

Yelp
Honestly there aren't that many açaí bowl places in Boston, so this place has my vote for a variety of options, freshness, and presentation. The cool thing about this place is that they'll allow half and half flavors for indecisive people like me. The only thing is they don't have dividers or anything so the bases will mix together but it's not a huge deal imo. Fruit is fresh and topping portions are very generous. The only thing is that It is on the sweeter side. The sweet base + sweet fruit + agave really overpowered so I'd opt for getting a fully. green base next time.
google avatar

Jean H.

Yelp
Great place for acai bowls and smoothies. I've loved acai bowls ever since I had them in Hawaii. We got delivery, and the presentation and taste remained wonderful. There are so many possible bowls to choose from. This really takes me back to a tropical vacation. A sweet treat that feels healthier than most!

Yelp
I love playa bowls, and I've had playa in a few other locations around the country and this was by far the worst experience. I got the electric mermaid. The pitaya base was good, but the bowl wasn't topped well. The mango on top was rock hard and not ripe yet, the kiwi slices were thick and just thrown on top- one of the 3 slices was the butt of the kiwi as well and not edible. My husband got a smoothie to go as we ordered our Uber, but it took over 15 minutes for them to make it because they were so focused on online orders instead of addressing the man right in front of them. It took so long, we had to cancel our Uber and order another after he got the smoothie. The ambiance was good. Not much different than other playas. I did notice that some of the tables were sticky and there were used napkins left on some of the tables though.

Yelp
At first glance paying over $10 for a bowl of blended fruit seems a bit much, but the bowls really fill you up. I could definitely eat one of these as a light meal if I wanted to. I got a mixed bowl-- half pitaya, half stupid cupid (strawberry banana), with banana (+$1). It came with granola by default and was $12 total. There was a lot of granola. The stupid cupid was on the tarter side while the pitaya was very sweet, so I liked the balance between the two. I was afraid that my bowl would melt because I couldn't eat it right away, but it held together very well for the 10 minutes that I couldn't eat it. There isn't indoor seating currently and not much space outdoors. The order/pickup line gets a little confusing inside, but the friendly staff do a great job at keeping track of who ordered what.
google avatar

Phuong L.

Yelp
We always get the nutella acai bowl and it always satisfy our cravings. The fruits are fresh and the nutella adds a good amount of sweetness. Service is excellent and fast. This location also offers lots of seating.
google avatar

Molly M.

Yelp
Great place if you like music when you're eating. This is the place for you the workers are nice and the app is easy to use. They also have a large selection of food from smoothies to acai bowls. They also use fresh fruit in their food. One more thing is you can accumulate points and get money off.
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome!!! Been wanting to go to playa bowls for a long time and finally had the chance after some gongcha and I am super pleased I have, The bowls are actually quite big & thought they were gonna be small so that was great & it's suuuuuper delicious. Awesome service will definitely be getting again
google avatar

Yelp
LOVE their Nica Bowl. Fruits are always fresh. Great way to get a healthy breakfast in during my workdays.

Yelp
One of my go to spots- best acai bowls! Always very quick service and always seating when I go.
google avatar

Gennie L.

Yelp
if you're looking for delicious acai bowls, you must check out playa bowls! they are 3 locations in the boston area: one near northeastern university, one near boston college and one in harvard square. not only do they have acai bows, they also have pitaya bowls, green bowls, banana bowls, coconut bowls, oatmeals bowls, chia pudding bowls, smoothies, and lots more. my personal favorite is the nutella acai bowl - it comes with granola, banana, strawberry, coconut flakes and nutella. all bowls range from $10 to $12. service is great, also when it's busy the wait time can be 15-20 mins. i'll definitely be back again to try the costa bowl! overall rating: 8/10
google avatar

Abrar A.

Yelp
I got the Nutella pitaya bowl but they had run out of blueberries so they gave me strawberries instead. It was pretty good!! I haven't had Pitaya before but I think I prefer it to Açaí now
google avatar

Querby J.

Yelp
Cute indoor aesthetic but very disappointed with my smoothie. Got the Pink Pitaya 16 oz and with tip spent nearly $12. A good amount if my fruit was not blended and was just sucken at the bottom. Everyone loves a chunky expensive smoothie right also there's no yogurt available on the menu which I found weird for a açaí bowl spot. The bowls look good but after this smoothie experience doubt I'd come back.
google avatar

Tiffany C.

Yelp
Literally the best smoothie bowls. Great for creating your own, adding your own toppings. My go-to: half acai + half pataya & I like the nutella version because who doesn't love nutella. It's a very good size for one person or even if you'd like to share. For me personally, it's a good snack to have when i'm in between meals. I don't want something heavy but I want something to keep me full :) Highly recommend.
google avatar

Melena S.

Yelp
YUM! I'm so glad there's a Playa Bowls in Boston. I'm in love! It's so hard to choose what to get because there're so many options. I usually get a pitaya based bowl or an açaí based bowl, sometimes half and half! They're so filling, fresh, and tasty. I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Jane C.

Yelp
This place really caters to the college-aged population in the area. I go to Northeastern and it's basically on campus. The interior is decorated with cute surfboards and beach/palm tree motifs, which makes sense since the chain was started on the Jersey Shore by surfers. There's a good amount of seating inside but it seemed like many people were taking their bowls to-go. You order/pay at the counter, then they call your name when your food is ready, kinda like Panera or Starbucks. I got the Nutella acai bowl, which is topped with granola, banana, strawberry, coconut flakes, and nutella drizzle. It tasted good and the portion was really big and filling. It was on the sweeter side so if you don't have a sweet tooth this might not be the place for you. They also have pitaya bowls, green bowls, oatmeal, smoothies, etc. You can even get a mixed bowl with 2 half bases (I believe the options are acai, pitaya, coconut, and green). You can also customize your order and add other toppings, I believe they're $0.75 per topping. Overall I enjoyed my acai bowl but I wouldn't eat it often- it was really sweet. I would have to crave it a lot to come back. I also really wish they sold smaller portions for less than $10, such as a snack bowl (perhaps a half portion for around $6-$7). I can't justify coming here for a snack and spending close to $13 (incl tax), which could get me a full meal somewhere else. Today I came here for breakfast and the portion was just enough because I was hungry, but if I only wanted a snack I would have so much left over.
google avatar

Lena L.

Yelp
Favorite smoothie place in town! Fruits are always fresh and they have a huge menu and offer customizations.

Andrew R.

Yelp
Unsatisfied, terrible service, got my order wrong My food came saggy nd unfrozen i just don't get what type of people they got working in here.
google avatar

Adina S.

Yelp
I recently went to one of the Playa Bowl locations on the boardwalk at the Jersey Shore, and I have to say I had a better experience here. The staff was much friendly and the space was a lot better. I took the bowl to go and it was a bit melted when I got home, but it was still fresh and delicious!
google avatar

Rebecca H.

Yelp
Best acai bowl I've ever had, and I've had a lot of high quality bowls in my time! Something about their blends are just unlike any other! Portions are large as well, and while it is pricey, I still am willing to pay because it's just that good! I really recommend the coconut blend! It's so good and so unique. I have tried to recreate it many times and always fall short! Pro tip: you can ask for 1/2 and 1/2, so I usually get 1/2 coconut 1/2 acai as a nuteloco bowl. AMAZING If you get their app, they send occasional discounts and $5 off for your birthday!
google avatar

Gillian S.

Yelp
(Disclaimer- the picture was when I was almost done eating it because I forgot to take a before picture, lol, so that's why its melted and mixed up. I still added it because to me the picture still looks delicious, almost more delicious with a little bit of melted-ness). This place is really good. Honestly it's the only place I've ever had a smoothie bowl but it was really good and I placed my order on DoorDash and called in my modification to my bowl, and they did it perfectly. I have a nut allergy and I love that I can easily avoid anything that has nuts in it, and that the smoothie bowl blends don't have almond milk or anything nut related. The juices were really good and the apple cider was LITERALLY the best I've ever had like I'm obsessed.

Brooklyn E.

Yelp
Best açaí, best customer service!! I came in late at night (9:45 PM) and it was still open and bustling. I appreciate this because it seems like a lot of places these days try to close early, even before the time stated on their websites Not Playa Bowls! It was still busy, and once I tasted the açaí I knew why. The first time I ordered, I didn't understand the menu and I thought you could add unlimited toppings free of charge ‍ When I saw my total was $47 for two bowls I asked the cashier what was up and he explained that each extra topping was a dollar, haha. SO I called it off and asked if I could order something else. He politely refunded me and then gave me time to look at the menu more closely. The second time I ordered it still ended up pretty pricy ($32). I didn't say anything, but the cashier gave me a discount to apologize for the confusion earlier! Totally unnecessary because the confusion was my fault, but so kind. Once I finally figured out my order, my açaí was done SUPER quick, basically no wait even though it was pretty busy. And dang this was the best açaí I've ever had. I got the power bowl but did half açaí and half coconut as the base. The flavors were SO good. Definitely sweet but not overwhelming. The granola was bomb. Super generous with the peanut butter. I loved the coconut base--I think it had real coconut flakes in it, definitely tasted legit. I will be going back soon. My only suggestion is that management work on the cleanliness of the place. The bathroom was pretty nasty (sticky floor with toilet paper all over the place) and in general I was glad I was doing takeout because the eating area didn't feel the cleanest. But overall the service and food made up for it for me.
google avatar

Bella U.

Yelp
Great açaí bowls. So many options. Quick service. Delicious, fresh ingredients. Love the atmosphere as well!
google avatar

J. B.

Yelp
Leans a little on the sweeter side from what I prefer in my acai bowl, but still delivers the goods. I like that I can find offerings that don't include nut juice, nor coconut, which is usually hard to come by at places like this. Their online ordering is easy and always effective/efficient.

Emma T.

Yelp
I get the electric mermaid every time! It's consistently delicious and fresh. Wait time in unpredictable and I usually give a 20 minute buffer between placing the order and picking it up.
google avatar

Alex C.

Yelp
Great menu variety and tasty smoothies, but they don't blend their smoothies nearly enough. I ordered a Dolce and the entire bottom third of my cup was mashed up banana chunk.
google avatar

Jack K.

Yelp
Clean, delicious, and quality ingredients. The staff does a great job. First timer and will be returning.
google avatar

Kait M.

Yelp
Since opening on Huntington, they've been pretty popular amongst the Northeastern students. It is 'conveniently' located on campus right next to College Convenience. There's no indoor seating right now because of COVID, but they're still getting customers. When I arrived, I noticed a lot of people were ordering ahead of time and just going in to pick it up. The staff was extremely fast at making our order - it took them maybe 4 minutes top to have it ready for us. I ordered a Nutella Acai Bowl and asked for no coconut shavings, but I guess they forgot and ended up including them in the bowl (I just tried to scrape them off the top). Besides that small mistake, I enjoyed the acai bowl! It was very refreshing and sweet. The fruits were fresh while the acai was creamy. I also love the crunch of the granola. My friend ordered the Dragonberry Pitaya Bowl but instead of blueberries, she added more strawberries. She was excited for the pretty vibrant pink color of the pitaya bowl. It had a very strong pineapple taste to it, giving it a tropical feel. They have a variety of bowls - Acai Bowl, Pitaya Bowl, Green Bowl, Coconut Bowl. I'm interested in trying more and seeing which ones I like the best. I don't know many places that sell acai bowls in Boston, so I will definitely come back here when I'm in the mood for a refreshing fruity meal!
google avatar

amy l.

Yelp
I've always thought that everything here was a bit pricey but it tastes really good and it's really filling. I could barely finish my smoothie bowl because of how filling it is. Honestly though aside from the price it's amazing.
google avatar

Allison T.

Yelp
First time getting playa bowls and not very happy. I got the Aloha smoothie and half of it is chunks that aren't blended... there is half a banana in the bottom and two other massive chunks that are just taking up space. Very disappointed when this is a $10 smoothie

Funny C.

Yelp
I had been a loyal customer for 3 months on a daily basis. My calculations would be spending $350.00 on a monthly basis. The base is suppose to be 11 oz. As a LOYAL guest I would assume requesting an additional ounce or two would not harm the business? I haven't been as supportive for the past month, my visits have dwindle to twice a month maybe. Yesterday I purchased an Acai bowl and the blueberries were MUSHY so I asked the manager and General Manager were the blueberries rotton? They replied because it is delivered in that manner it is served mushy. Everyone KNOWS mushy blueberries have LOST their nutrients. Please educate your people who are responsible for running your business. They did not offer to make another one or compensate for the blueberries that were mushy? It's like going to Publix and purchasing an apple with worm holes in them. It makes you wonder if their violating other things like washing their hands or washing the fruit? Food for thought

Anita S.

Yelp
My daughter loves this place. Rightly so. Love the bowls, the juices. I've usually had the acai bowls and tried pitaya for the first time. Very satisfying.
google avatar

Vicky W.

Yelp
For someone who hasn't had a lot of acai bowls, I definitely think this is a really great option to try out at least. Even my friends who are from California and have had lots of acai bowls consider this a pretty decent place. They are always very generous with their toppings and I feel like I get a full meal from one of their bowls. Don't underestimate their size! I like the different flavors and textures in the bowl especially because they will mix the granola both on top and on the bottom of the bowl to create an evenly distributed bowl. My favorite is the nutella acai bowl which is one the sweeter side but they also have many other bases to try out! For example, the pitaya one is not as sweet if you prefer that. In terms of improvements, I am not a huge fan of the atmosphere. I feel like the music is always on blast which makes it difficult for me to have a conversation with my friend. Additionally all their tables are like these long surfboards which is aesthetic af but not practical if you don't have a large group. Nevertheless, I would still recommend trying it out if you're craving it and in the area! There's definitely a lot of college students around since they are basically right on campus so they also host fundraisers for student groups. They also have a rewards program so that's a bonus as well!
google avatar

Justin L.

Yelp
This was my first time at playa bowl and it was worth the wait even in the rain! I got the avalanche bowl ($13) which comes with a lot of yummy goodies. The decor is perfect. There is a variety of different bowls and you're allowed to substitute any fruit! The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. There is definitely a bowl for you! I would highly recommend coming here !
google avatar

Melanie R.

Yelp
I decided to order from playa bowls for the first time yesterday and it was super great. I didn't eat in their physical location due to what is going on but got delivery instead and ordered a pink flamingo bowl. The base is pitaya which is essentially a dragon fruit base. I was skeptical at first because I thought it would be sour but surprisingly it wasn't. It was tarte at first but the sweetness kicks it at the end. There was bananas, granola and honey. I went with this bowl because I still wanted something fruity but sweet but at the same time nothing high in calories. I was a bit shocked when looking at their nutrition information on their website and learning that most of their bowls are very high in calories which is disappointing because this wouldn't be something I could eat everyday unless I was going to the gym, so this is definitely something you could eat after having a good workout session. But as an everyday breakfast I would go with their green bases instead since they are on the low calorie side like 250-400 calorie range. This particular bowl I got was 430 calories which is pretty good, I was it was more filling but that is something I can easily request in my next order by adding more bananas or granola. If you are in the mood for an açaí / smoothie bowl I would definitely recommend coming to playa bowl just because they offer a lot of variety in flavor from most places I have been to.

Yelp
I wanna give this between a 3 and a 4 mostly because of price and smoothie bowl presentation. Overall the staff was friendly and the place was pretty neat and really cute! The pricing is pretty steep for a smoothie bowl, despite 1) the awesome location by the busy area by Northeastern's campus and Mass Ave and 2) my Olas bowl being very delicious. Also, considering there was really no one else waiting for their order, I think the bowl itself could've been composed a little nicer? Regardless, can't wait to try another bowl! Their almond butter was sooo yummy and the banana base was a great, thick consistency and flavor.
