The Best Tacos In NYC - New York - The Infatuation

"Playita is a tiny seafood-focused spot for tacos and mariscos on the Lower East Side, but they also make a stellar duck carnitas. There's a small side counter with enough space for two people to stand if you want to use this as an extremely low-key and satisfying spot to meet up with someone you met on an app, or for a quick and not-boring solo lunch. We love the pescadilla, a crunchy food-lover's dream of a hard shell taco stuffed with fish and slaw." - Neha Talreja, Kenny Yang, Carina Finn Koeppicus, Willa Moore

Playita - Review - Lower East Side - New York - The Infatuation

"Every LES resident should be rejoicing about Playita, a small mariscos and taco spot that should be your new go-to takeout place. Order some fish and meat options (the duck carnitas and diablo shrimp are standouts), and don't leave without the ceviche that has huge chunks of whitefish and a tangy broth that you can’t help but sip like a cocktail. The space can really only fit five people, but there’s a small ledge where you can scarf down your tacos and make intense eye contact with the Luis Miguel photo on the wall. The Dancer and Eastwood are on the same block, and both are great places to digest your tacos and have a drink if you want to make a night of it." - Carlo Mantuano

The food was hot or miss. The tacos were great, but the ceviche was meh, and the salsa portion was so small and they charge a good price for it! I would go back only for the tacos. It's probably better for takeaway. The only seating were the stools at a small side bar. The vibe is interesting, but didn't draw me in. The service was a bit funny. Not good or bad, just strange.

Friendly people in a small stand only shop. The Duck Taco was tasty. The Green salsa was good and not super hot at all. I will definitely be back.

Amazing tacos here! And the team is so kind and welcoming. Definitely worth a pop in for a couple tacos if you are in the hood. The pollo asado was so delicious….and the quekas!

Love this tiny taqueria. The tacos are so flavorful and fresh. The quality of the ingredients is unmatched. I stopped by for a quick bite with friends. I had the mushroom adobo (the mushrooms are perfectly cooked), the el dorado with potato (crunchy and creamy), and the varita al pastor (perfect amount of spice). I was so full! Stop by and literally eat anything on the menu. You won’t be disappointed. I’m getting a burrito next time.

I had the ceviche and tortilla soup....my only regret is that I don't live close enough to return everyday!! The food is so fresh and tasty....owner lady (yeah!!) is super sweet... the prices are just right. Go!!

The burrito had me full and was delicious. I also had the taco and chips with salsa. The owner was friendly and talkative. He went over the menu with me.

Google
Incredible new spot! Food was insanely good, some of the best Mexican I’ve had in this city up there with trucks and stands in Bk and queens, as well as upscale spots like Los Tacos Nr. 1. The food was great and the portions are generous. Prices are very fair for what you get, especially considering inflation and rent these days. The owner is a really nice lady who lives right in the neighborhood. Decor is also very cute and clean. Awesome place!

Google
I hate to be that person saying these are THE BEST tacos in town, but that’s what I’m here to say. From the slow cooked Carne Asada to the duck taco, spicy shrimp and amazing mushroom taco, these guys are hitting on all cylinders. Tiny little storefront, they don’t do many items but they are truly the tastiest handmade tacos I’ve had in Manhattan.

Yelp
Amazing new addition to the neighborhood. This is a really inexpensive Mexican restaurant, or should I say taqueria. The diablo shrimp taco was so delicious. The space is small so you might walk by and miss it, but it is well worth a stop. There is no seating so it's only standing room at the counter if you want to eat. But it's the only real Mexican right around the area.

Yelp
Pescadilla Marisco. Yummers. Nice Heat. Lovely service. Cabbage slaw was a nice contrast to the salsa roja!

Yelp
Definitely not your traditional tacos. Very good flavor. I recommend if you want a different type of taco. The tacos are big, so do not over ordered lol

Yelp
LOVE the delicious Pescadilla and duck carnitas tacos I tried! The guacamole is homemade perfection! I've known the owner, Iris, since I was in third grade and I'm impressed and proud of her new venture. The nostalgic 80's mexico decor is a fun throwback.

Yelp
Not sure where Kate S. decided this was a "really inexpensive Mexican restaurant" but it's most definitely not. $6.50 is laughable for a taco from a takeout place. Even the typical NYC $4 price is insane. Apparently she's never had tacos outside of Manhattan. Regardless, they get an extra star for venturing outside the same boring Pueblan menu found all over NYC, but the food was nothing special. They've got a lot of buzz right now from various food publications, but I doubt this place lasts long with prices like these.

Yelp
VEGAN options are delicious. Mushroom Adobo and Calabaja. So yummy!!!! Best Tacos in NY for sure.

Yelp
The owner is a sweetheart and everything I've tried so far has been incredible! The Varita Al Pastor taco is one of my favorites, but even just their bean and cheese burrito (add Mexican slaw) is really special.

Yelp
I came across Playita through The Infatuation and I'll agree with Michael's comment. As he mentioned, I give them props for trying something new, like Duck Carnitas. However, this dish and the restaurant are going on the overhyped list. I ordered Playita for delivery, as it was only a couple blocks from my hotel on Wall Street. What we ordered: (1 of each) - Duck Carnitas Taco - Playita Fish Taco - Mushroom Adobo Taco - Fried Fish Pescadilla Taco - Ceviche Playita - Esquites Total was like $51 I'm not sure how The Infatuation claimed this is a go-to takeout spot; this is too expensive to be a go-to (but that blame goes to the food reviewer, because Playita didn't say that). Unlike some places, each taco is a singular taco, which I kinda expected. But for the price and based on the descriptions, these were not as bright or tasty as I would have hoped. I wasn't met with warm braises, finger-licking sauces, or pillowy tortillas. Also seemingly no option for flour. Everything arrived kinda cold and given how close I was (delivery took 5-10 min), and that the place is billed as takeout-oriented, I am judging that as an accurate example of a typical order. But the real critique here was, at the end, after splitting between two people, we still felt hungry. And nothing was scrumptious. That's my lasting impression. This is gonna be a pass in the future, I think I can find better elsewhere.

Yelp
Holy mama the food is incredible! Each and every taco we tried was freakin delicious!!!

Yelp
5/5! Food was so good! Ordered the Diablo shrimp and Carne Asada tacos and they were outstanding! Come here and don't miss out!

Dave D.

Yelp
The duck carnitas are fantastic, and a fun nod to nearby chinatown cuisine. They compare favorably to the same dish at Cosme (and for a tiny fraction of the price!). Loved the Calabaja too. Will be returning soon!
