I feel like I'm being generous with this rating, but I'm a nice guy so, you know, there it is.
Went to Plaza Azteca in Leesburg for dinner around 5:30pm. We decided to try it because of the menu vegan options. The place was lively but I wouldn't call it crowded. We were seated right away. A few minutes ticked by slowly. Then a smiling waiter appeared, dropped off some tortilla chips and salsa, informed us our waiter would be with us soon, and vanished.
A few minutes later, and I'm being literal, our waiter stopped by to get our drinks order. He seemed unhappy...surly...resentful...not sure exactly. He then left and (a few minutes later) returned, plunked them down on the end of the table and asked for our order. I chose the vegan tacos, my wife chose the vegetarian enchiladas, and my sister chose Carne Asada, cooked medium.
Our chips long depleted, and several many long extended minutes later our food finally arrived. Thankfully brought by a cheerful helper.
Vegetarian Enchiladas - the serving size was good; three in total, bean, spinach, cheese, side of rice. The enchiladas were covered in a thick cheese sauce (too much cheese). The flavor wasn't there. The spinach was quite salty.
Vegan Tacos - there were three double corn tortilla tacos, with vegan soy meat bits and some kind of pico or something. The soy meat begged for seasoning, it was surprisingly bland.
Carne Asada - well presented, looked good. When the steak was cut into it revealed a rare instead of medium, so it had to go back. That meant waiting for our waiter to do another pass. When asked to see if they could grill it another minute or so he seemed almost hesitant, like trying to decide if he was really cut out to be a waiter. He did return with it several...minutes...later and it seemed fine. [Side note: with the attitude he gave I personally would not have eaten it for fear of one of those horror stories being replicated.]
When we were finished we waited for around ten minutes before we saw him again and asked for the bill. It turned out to be more pricey than I felt it was worth, but we tipped well since we made an assumption that he might be covering a larger area than normal and maybe as just rushed off his feet.
The two stars are meant to convey that the dinner was edible and the decorative festive atmosphere is fun. Nothing more. For what it's worth we won't return given the bland food and lack of service. If you want to see what a really dynamic and delicious Mexican restaurant is like try Plaza Mexico in Frederick Maryland!
Disclaimers: since my wife and my orders were vegan / vegetarian it is quite possible their regular food is good and they just don't know how to do vegan well. Also we don't drink alcohol so we understand that maybe those who do might have a better experience than ours. Worth a try!
