"Episode 5, “Craw-Zaddy”s makeover subject is Todd Madoxx, the owner and operator of Canyon Lake restaurant Plookys Cajun Boiling Pot. There’s a lot of crawfish talk in the episode, from the hosts playing with live mudbugs, Porowski talking through what crawfish are (“I love crawfish. They’re sweet. They fall apart when you suck the brains out.”), and seeing Madoxx and his daughter Kaci prepping a boil. Later, Berk upgrades the restaurant, turning it from an admittedly run-down space into a bright, comparatively more modern one while still paying tribute to its kitschy soul." - Erin Russell, Nadia Chaudhury

Google
Not much to look at from the outside but that’s what makes Plooky’s charming. Only downside is that their gumbo is so good, it sells out! Leaving now with a ton of crawfish and all the delicious fixings, but I wish I had gotten here sooner! No gumbo left for this girl but I’ll be back… earlier, next time!

Google
Was my first time eating here, and if it weren't so far from me, I'd come here all the time. The food was good and the prices can't be beat. One of the most affordable cajun boils I've had anywhere. Is also BYOB, so thats a plus.. Everything had good flavor. Food came out quick, and the owner is a friendly guy. Shrimp were large, crawfish were average, potatoes and corn had good flavor, and sausage was decent. Definitely plan on eating here again in the future. Just have to find the time to drive out there on the weekend.

While staying in Canyon Lake area for the summer we wanted to try some good seafood. We love the Boiling Pot in Rockport and found this place just North of Hancock area of the lake. They've really spruced up the place since the last reviews 3 years ago. My husband and I got the Shrimp boil pot. We can eat and this filled us up! $22.95 for a pound of huge gulf shrimp, potatoes, sausage, corn and sourdough bread. We should've ordered the medium spice, my husband likes spicy but I can't take the heat. The key lime and banana pies were also delicious!! The staff (all family of the owner) is super friendly. They are open from 5-9 and it's byob. We will be going back!!

Anniversary dinner at Plooky's was amazing, they stayed open later just so we could have a wonderful sit down dinner and man did we eat! We both had to work on our anniversary and this was an awesome way to end our day. Tod and Cameron made us feel like family and even gave us dessert to take home🥰 If your in the canyon lake area check them out! It's also BYOB 😉

Google
Friendly staff, fair prices, deliciously cooked crawfish and shrimp. A must-visit when in the New Braunfels/Canyon Lake area. They had a great key lime pie as well.

Google
This is a wonderfully charming and beautifully decorated crawfish shop! We loved the food and the energy. We are diehard spicy food fans and couldn’t believe how much we were sweating and our noses running. Don’t forget to order the homemade key lime pie and bring a cold drink for BYOB ❤️

Google
So well worth it....We did read the Reviews but what place doesn't have some of those....And we are so glad we did believe them....It's the beginning of crawfish season so know there are going to be some small 🦐 crawfish but we also got so giants...the jumbo shrimp and the corn and potatoes were so good...We got Med spice and it was perfect....It is BYOB...so bring the beer...they don't serve alcohol....You won't regret it....It opens at 5 pm only for Dinner

Google
Plooky's is a great restaurant on the North side of Canyon Lake! If you like shrimp and crawfish, this is the place for you! It's a lot of fun and quite the experience and perfect for a family night out! It's open on the weekends, from 5-9 PM, but it's definitely worth planning your visit around. The locals know to go to Plooky's. I highly recommend checking it out and trying the seafood boil, it's a must-have! Overall, Plooky's is a great spot for a casual night out with great food and a fun atmosphere!

Yelp
I really wish I could've given this location a better rating. I give them at least one star b/c of the grandson who was simply the cutest. This place came highly recommended, but we were simply disappointed & grossed out. My daughter ordered 2#s of crawfish & it was not good at all. It was overcooked and some pieces she had to spit out b/c it tasted terrible. We should've known better than to order crawfish, when it's not even crawfish season. I pray she doesn't get sick. The potatoes, corn and sausage were good, but that's about it. From this experience, I would never return again. They need to do better.

Yelp
We have been coming here for years, but always take out since we live so close we grab it one our way home usually. We were delighted to see the upgraded interior on QE and the large crowds every night. So we went early one Saturday night and got our favorite, the shrimp/sausage boil. It was as good as ever, although I didn't like the thinly sliced sausage. I also got the Gumbo, which was better than before but could use a bit more tinkering. I highly recommend stopping in if you are in the area, and remember it is BYOB.

Dena M.

Yelp
Gave me shellfish poisoning. Which makes sense seeing that the owner said the crawfish was "cooked yesterday then reheated" and charged $10/pound to poison me and refused a refund because he's "never had a complaint". Scroll thru these reviews and eat at your own risk. Or don't. I recommend don't. To go order so cannot speak to "ambience" but seeing as how rude the owner was on the phone I'd assume it is very townie

Humberto A.

Yelp
After watching the last season of QE, had to plan a visit to this place and see it in person. Plookys has all the flair of a local dive. Even when it was a cold rainy day there was some movement in the restaurant. To me as soon as I learned they were BYOB I was like ok.. I see you Plookys (Kinda funny because I used to hang a lot in the Canyon Lake area and never been here before) So we made our way inside with our Ice Chest full of brewskis ,Mr Tood and her daughter were there and the place looked exactly like in the show (Kudos to Bobby) and yeah they have the Iconic Surfin Mudbug. But well let's go to what's important ... The food. So we ordered a bit of everything. For starters we got a cup of the Gumbo that everybody's talking about. I did like it even when it's not a traditional "Cajun" chicken and sausage Gumbo it's really good and with the weather it worked like a charm tbh. It had a bunch of okra which I did like a lot. For the main entree We order the Feast of the 2 pounds of Crawfish it comes with Sausage and potatoes corn we got it spicy as well added some shrimp the flavor was on point. The crawfish boil it's hands down one of the best here in Texas. It was hot and fresh and delicious. The shrimp was really good too. We also added some Boudin and that was super good as well. Left a bit of a room for dessert and we got their key lime pie and it was the cherry on top of an excellent evening at this lovely place. The service as excellent a bit of a wait on the food but understandable Everybody kept checking on our table and asking making sure we had everything we needed. You can tell why this place has been a staple of the area and it's cos they make you feel at home and welcome. Will definitely recommend don't forget it's BYOB. Oh yeah and Mr Todd it's even more charming in person. The Fab 5 did it again that's a sure thing.

Erieser C.

Yelp
I keep commenting on how delicious the food is in this place. TodayI leave you a picture of a full service with extra sausage

Yelp
Amazing !!!! Family owned Authentic food and atmosphere, you can taste the love in every bite you take

Sunny S.

Yelp
Great people, great food. Family friendly, fun welcoming!! Sit and talk with owner he's an awesome human!!!

Penny S.

Yelp
This was our first time there and God bless them they had a party of 40 prior to us arriving. We were patient and it was worth it. We were not in a hurry and it is BYOB so we sat back and visited with each other and enjoyed ourselves not being rushed. Service was great and friendly and the food was fantastic. We will definitely be back. Pricing was very reasonable I felt. Not sure why my review says I am from California. I am local

Tim R.

Yelp
I hate down-voting what sounds like a nice small family business. However, we had the gumbo and a piece of sausage. The gumbo was just weird. Too much vinegar and thin stock. The sausage was good tasting, but served in a basket on a paper towel. What happens when you cut into sausage on a paper towel? You get paper towel. I realize now I could have, and probably should have, put the sausage on the butcher paper. The service was okay. The waitress was new and I think she forgot us. I had asked her about what came with the Adult Sausage, and she said just the link. So we ordered two servings of gumbo. When she brought the food out, she informed us that she had been mistaken and that the sausage would have come with potatoes and corn. I would have ordered that and we would have shared the gumbo. No rush to go back.

Zack F.

Yelp
0/10. Crawfish were all squishy, no flavor and seemed off. Not sure if they were old or overcooked or combo of both? Terrible crawfish would NOT recommend

Tonia P.

Yelp
Casey was awesome, her son is adorable and her dad cooks and delivers the food. Love the family business. The reason for the three stars is because the crawfish (even the hottest) didn't have much flavor, but maybe we caught an off night. The Gumbo and Boudin were great! We're coming back to try the crawfish again!

Alicia D.

Yelp
Hands down the WORST crawfish I have ever tried to eat. Most of the crawfish were mushy, which indicates they were dead before being cooked. We asked for medium spice- it was not even mild. The crawfish comes with corn, potatoes and sour dough bread. The bread comes out first. It's served with ketchup and mustard- really?? It would have been the best thing on the table had they served it with room temp butter. The corn is overcooked frozen nibblets. Is it so hard to source fresh corn? And why do they have to cook it to oblivion? The potatoes were not washed before cooking- a little dirt with your potato, ma'am? They had no flavor either since the crawfish boil was so bland. Don't waste your money on this joint. It's absolutely horrible. By the way, had they bothered to ask if we'd enjoyed our meal, I would have told them all of this. We left the majority of our food uneaten so that should have been a clue. And today, hubby has symptoms of food poisoning.

Deborah L.

Yelp
Great food! The seasoning and sauce on the crawfish and snow crabs was delicious. The servers where nice and kept the benches and table cleared. Service was great!

Michael E.

Yelp
Great staff, Better Food. I would definitely recommend Byob- that was something new but they were sure to let me know when I called.

Victoria S.

Yelp
Go INSIDE!!! Food couldn't be better, atmosphere is so warm that it feels like mama's home, and the owner as well as his family that owns this joint are the most precious, loving individuals you could ask for. Thank you for a great experience, Plooky's!!! And YES, we did discover this place because of QE. Made it an absolute must on our road trip. Tip: it really IS BYOB - just bring in your ice chest!!!! Love it.

Paulo F.

Yelp
This place is so cool! It's hip, modern, and their food is delicious! As soon as you come in you feel like you are at home being greeted by owners and the staff. Will definitely be coming back on my next road trip! By the way, don't forget to take a picture next to the "Sur-Fish" the crawfish on top of the surfboard! Iconic!

Dena M.

Yelp
OWNER ADMITS TO SELLING OLD FOOD FOR FULL PRICE!! We purchased 6 pounds of crawfish and paid $10/pound so i expected them to be fresh, especially since when we called the the owner told us that he would "start cooking them" when we called to place our order. Upon taking them home and started to eat them, there was a funky taste and they were completely dry and flavorless. We called the owner and asked what was wrong with the crawfish and he said they were from yesterday but that he'd give us a discount because they were not fresh. We were starving so we put up with the dry lack of flavor and used some seasoning from comal crawfish company which salvaged the meal. Once I got my credit card and called back to receive a partial refund, we were told to "bring the rest back". 5 minutes before the superbowl. And when I told him I was not going to leave my guests and superbowl party to bring His day old crawfish BACK. When I protested and said he never told us he was expecting them back, he got belligerent and said he "always" cooks them like this and has never had a complaint. When I said he told me they were old he protested "they aren't old!" But had already admitted they were re cooked from yesterday. So be warned. The owner admits he ALWAYS makes crawfish this way. Stay away from a "Cajun" restaurant that sells day old funky crawfish for high dollar

Tyler K.

Yelp
Great spot with awesome food and beer. I would highly recommend for some home made southern food that's family owned. I'm from LA and was in the area on a road trip with some friends. We stopped by as it was nearest to us while in the area and will definitely come again if back. Show your support and give it a try!! Everyone there were easy to talk to and were ever helpful!! Sorry I didn't have any pictures to show.

Nichole M.

Yelp
Great place! Nice people! Delicious turkey leg!! We got the gumbo, the shrimp, the crawfish and the turkey leg. So good! We will absolutely be back.

Eric C.

Yelp
Not good. Plooky's? More like pukeys! Horrible food, cold, and "gumbo", which was really vegetable with bits of meat soup at best, not a roux, was heated in the microwave and served in a takeaway coffee cup! Shit hole honestly!

EZdidit9 V.

Yelp
If I could leave a half a star I would, it was honestly the WORST food I've ever had. It was disrespectful how disgusting the food was. $10 a pound for food not even your pet would eat. Please don't waste your hard earned money on this scam of a place. Im not one to ever leave reviews but this place so awful.

Angelica G.

Yelp
I hate to give such a low review to a local spot but honestly I had such a horrible experience here. My family and I were excited to eat here considering it had such high reviews. To begin, the crawfish were $10 a pound which wouldn't be an issue but they were the smallest crawfish I've ever seen. Not only that, they were mushy and falling apart -- they felt like they were either old or frozen crawfish. We had to pick out individually which crawfish were even edible and it wasn't very many. We all felt sick after eating this, my sister in law threw up immediately after. Bathrooms were also pretty gross if that's something of issue to you. Save your money and go somewhere else!

Dillon H.

Yelp
Delish gumbo! I would definitely recommend Plooky's especially after their recent renovation.

Marissa H.

Yelp
This place is so cute! The food is good, especially if you are a fan of seafood or adventurous eating!! The food was delicious and super fresh! The service was great and the staff were super kind and personable. We love plookys, and we'll come back any time we are in the area!

Alina B.

Yelp
Yum love so good!! Best gumbo and corn, really cute decorations inside too! Loved the ambiance

Courtney P.

Yelp
Took my kids and Mom here tonight to celebrate my mom's birthday. Yes, we found the place through being avid fans of Queer Eye. We'd hoped to get there at opening but naps took precedence. As such we got there about 6:00, was told 20 minutes but that turned to an hour and 20 minutes. My husband was getting handed free beers from patrons clearing out their coolers as they left and the staff was nice and apologized for the wait. I was getting a little scared that I was going to lose the kids to a meltdown due to waiting and hunger, but once we sat down the waitress brought us some bread and we were able to stave off any tantrums. We got the gumbo, it was good once I added some salt to it. Odd thing was my husband and I both ordered a cup of gumbo and mom ordered a bowl. We got our cups really quickly but the bowl took about 20 minutes to come out. We also ordered a pound of the shrimp and a pound of the crawfish. Got to teach my kids how to peel and de shell both the shrimp and crawfish. We ordered the mild cause it was my kids and my mom and it was all really good. Just what I would expect for a boil place. Decor was great but biggest added bonus was that Dr.Jereka from episode 6 and Chris from episode 8 were both there having dinner with their families. I snapped a photo of them from a ways off and was really excited to get a 3 for 1.

Rachel A.

Yelp
Their gumbo and service is amazing!!!!!!!!!! Absolutely recommend.. truly everything on the menu was amazing!

Clover F.

Yelp
BYOB and then hunker down for the one the best meals and best restaurants of it's kind. The gumbo is to die for. I had never had crayfish, but they helped me know the best way to eat it and now I am a fan! Will come again, thank you

Danielle D.

Yelp
Amazing food and love the southern feel!!!! Felt just like home. I will be back next time I am in the area.

Anna D.

Yelp
Decided to stop by on a whim and the crawfish was absolutely delicious! Definitley will make this a go to spot when passing through Canyon Lake.

Pilar G.

Yelp
The best place ever! Such a beautiful spot owned by great people. Can't wait to come again!

Chloe K.

Yelp
Amazing food and atmosphere! Absolutely love the gumbo and the crawfish is to die for!

Dean W.

Yelp
We just ate here for the 1st time being new to Canyon Lake and absolutely loved it. The shrimp, potatoes, corn and just everything was so good. Just a fun dining experience and prior to leaving, I was fortunate enough to meet Todd who owns the restaurant. What a terrific guy. We will be back soon. It will be one of our go to places!!

Jan H.

Yelp
Place is dirty, food didn't taste very impressive. It was kind of creepy - did not impress me to become a fan of cajun food. Maybe it's because I don't eat a boat load of sauce to cover the bland flavor?

Nicole L.

Yelp
I cannot wait to try this place wow just obsessed with the family energy and love. I love this so much what a beautiful place!!!!!!!!

Sammi M.

Yelp
Stopped here with friends and loved the atmosphere and food! BYOB and some delicious Cajun boil. Would definitely recommend stopping here!

Natanya C.

Yelp
I only have one word for this place........ zaddy... and also the food is amazing so there's that.

Nicole J.

Yelp
Absolutely authentic crawfish with the sweetest family-run atmosphere and decor. Must try the gumbo!

Joseph H.

Yelp
Love the menu and this crawfish is better than any restaurant in New Orleans! A must-stop in canyon lake

Nat G.

Yelp
Wow .. Please come and try the food here!! When we first saw this place (after searching for a place to eat during our road trip) we almost left without trying but decided to give it a shot after reading few reviews here. During my visit, it was a "one man show" restaurant, I believe he's the owner, chef and server!! The food was delicious, it has the perfect spice to it. We had half n half shrimps and crawfish for $22.95 and this was perfect size for 2 adults and a kid. Too bad we wanted to try their gumbo but it's out, must be another yummy dish here. Highly recommend!!!

Abby S.

Yelp
Amazing crawfish! Best in Texas and the gumbo was 10/10. Recommend this place to anyone

Micaela G.

Yelp
Amazing place! Delicious food and the staff is the best & sweetest. After watching their story on Queer Eye- I had to try this place out! So proud of this place & everything it stands for.

Meredith M.

Yelp
Amaaazing!!! Best crawfish boil I've ever had and lovely atmosphere. Customer service was incredibly welcoming.

Jinny H.

Yelp
The first thing that I noticed about this smell was its interesting smell. I didn't know what to expect from a Cajun place because I never had crawfish before, or any type of "Cajun" style foods. Plookys was definitely a small mom/pop, hole-in-the-wall kind of place. My friend and I shared the full sized meal, with half shrimp and half crawfish. I was a bit disappointed that the crawfish didn't have that much meat, but I liked the sausage and was addicted to their corn that was cooked to perfection. If I go back, I'd probably just order the one pound of shrimp rather than the two pounds of crawfish. A few of my other friends opted out of the shrimp/crawfish combination and settled for the meatloaf and turkey legs. This place is BYOD, so I suggest bringing your drinks. We brought some drinks that we had left over from floating on the river. The server wasn't very attentive, but that was alright - she still gave us ice for the drinks, which was nice. So, overall, my experience for here was alright, but 4 stars because this was my first "Cajun" experience.

Valeria G.

Yelp
Beautiful BYOB restaurant and delicious food. Crawfish boil with potatoes and sourdough bread? Yes please!

Harrison D.

Yelp
What a great experience. The owner and staff were so friendly and made us feel beyond welcome. Food was incredible and we can't wait to be back!

Jasmine E.

Yelp
Heard about this place on a show the owner Todd was on & I checked it out & it's bomb

Peggy E.

Yelp
Best crawdaddies in this area! Todd (the owner) is the coolest old Cajun dude. He's a little salty but super sweet! Beware the spicy corn. It's a killer! These crawfish were purged, so they're super clean and fresh. I had a great time eating all that tamale!

Lindsay L.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and food! Highly recommend for your crawfish cravings! It is totally worth it
