"Eating in an alley? The first thing that comes to mind is probably bad pizza consumed on a paper tray at that time in the night when you need food immediately. Plouf might be in a Financial District alley, but is basically the total opposite. They’re putting out some really solid, quality French food, including some of the best mussels around. Not a paper tray in sight. There’s a definite Parisian bistro vibe going on, really kicked into overdrive by the servers’ striped long-sleeved shirts (berets seems to be optional). On weekends, the crowd is touristy, maybe due to the location, but on weekdays it skews suits. But even so, Plouf remains chill, welcoming, and generally enjoyable. photo credit: Krescent Carasso The fact that the food is almost all excellent also doesn’t hurt. While the mussels are the main draw, the rest of the menu holds its own as well. It’s all pretty heavily French, and the chefs have a deep fondness for butter and cream. It makes everything taste pretty damn good, as long as you’re prepared for a very rich meal. We’ve hit Plouf with our parents, for a leisurely weekday lunch on a nice day, and for their awesome happy hour. If you work in the area, this needs to be added to your rotation immediately. And if you don’t, it’s worth the trip into Financial for some of those mussels (we like them, can you tell?) and a casual atmosphere with nice waiters, nicer food, and a laid-back feel that transports you out of FiDi and into a better place. Not quite France, but close enough. Food Rundown Curry Mussels Spicy curry sauce, great dipping bread, and well cooked mussels. Get the mini version for everyone to share. Plouf Mussels Rich and saucy and classic. If you want to go traditional, these are the way to do it. You will definitely be asking for extra bread. Grilled Asparagus Salad Yay vegetables. Really fresh asparagus plus awesome romesco sauce. The egg on top is fried and breaded. It’s weird but it works. Crab Cakes Yes please. A little spicy and all crab with very little filler. Order ’em. Pastis Flamed Shrimp The polenta is rich and the big tail on shrimp are great. There is a lot of butter involved. Not complaining. Seared Duck Breast More richness. This is excellent, and the hash and cabbage alongside is stellar too. We don’t eat duck very often, and we’re happy Plouf has it on the menu. Hawaiian Butterfish Sort of like a lighter swordfish, this one is a little disappointing. The mushroom risotto is gummy and the fish is somewhat bland. Pass. Chocolate Espresso Mousse Too dense. It’s hard to eat more than a bite or two, which is saying a lot for us. Creme Brûlée It’s light and creamy and delicious. Best dessert on the menu." - Taylor Abrams

Great happy hour! Plouf mussels are a must! Spicy, creamy and very garlic y! $1 fresh raw oysters. Duck liver pate was slightly sweet but the accoutrements offset it nicely. Shaved brussel sprouts are ok. Glasses of wine has several choices ($8-10). Service was friendly and attentive. Not crowded on a Tuesday evening.

Great environment down in Belden Place - great, if not overpriced, food. Had the hangar steak, coq au vin, and Caesar salad. The patio seating really makes the environment feel really special. Also great happy hour specials!

Came here to celebrate my mom's bday. We made a reservation for 7pm. The actual place was hidden in an alley behind Kearny St. It was actually really big inside and a lot of outdoor seating. It was pretty empty for a Saturday evening. We sat in one of the booths, that could definitely fit a lot of people. We ordered the marinere mussels, salad, crab cakes, and creme brulee. The mussells were a really good price, with a LOT too. The salad was good to share between the two of us. I never had crab cakes before, but these were made really nicely! I really enjoyed them. We finished with a creme brulee. It was huge and definitely a perfect way to end the meal. I would definitely go again, as the prices were fair and the food tasted amazing. Inside is really big and roomy, which I appreciate. Service was also really fast and attentive.

Mussels in coconut broth gave my friend and I a really upset stomach within one hour of dining. I called the restaurant to inform them, and suggested they verify if the day's batch of mussels was contaminated, so as to safeguard other diners falling sick. The manager refused and went off on a rant about being in business for 20+ years and questioned my authenticity. This is so disappointing, especially because I actually enjoyed my dining experience and was thinking about hosting my birthday here. No chance in hell now. Talk about bad customer service. Thank you for devaluing me over the phone and making me feel unwarranted. 0/10, never dining here again.

Lovely authentic french cuisine and nice outdoor seating. Listen to your server before you order! Delicious desserts and classic European espresso to accompany it.

So so so good. In a town known for its seafood, Plouf stands above the tide in an especially unique way. The variety of preparations for mussels may seem daunting, but I would recommend merely picking one with the knowledge right now that it will be good, so much so that you will return and try another version in the future. Also, I was surprised to see that the actual menu in comparison to the website had more than just shellfish, so don't be daunted if mussels aren't your thing. But unless you have an allergy or are averse to eating meat, mussels will become your thing after dining here.

Good crabcakes with a sufficient amount of crabmeat. But my favorite dish is their mussels! They're served in a cast iron bowl with marvelous broth. Soak a piece of baguette in the broth and enjoy it with mussels and a glass of white wine!
