Plug Uglies - Review - Upper East Side - New York - The Infatuation

It's hard to pick just one thing we like the most about Plug Uglies, a sports bar on the Upper East Side. We love that when we texted our friends to see if they wanted to meet up, we got to type out the words “Plug Uglies” and weren’t referring to a shady floormate from college. And we also love that they have some of the city’s best buffalo wings. They come out hot, crispy, and in a more-acidic-than-normal buffalo sauce with the classic vegetables and dips. This bar attracts a slightly rowdier crowd, and they don’t always play the volume for the big game, making it better for groups of mixed sports interest. They’ve got shuffleboard tables, and a location in Gramercy (that one is bring-your-own-food, just FYI). photo credit: Will Hartman - Will Hartman

Edit: BRING BACK THE HUSHPUPPIES I am thankfully the new ownership group put in the work to spruce up this old space after taking over for Bar Coastal. They still have the classic wings that are fantastic. The atmosphere is far superior than previous establishments at this location and they are pulling in good crowds especially on sports nights. I frequent this Plug for their wings and sports.

Great addition to the UES! My friends and I enjoyed a reserved table in the middle of the bar, where were we surrounded by plenty of TVs to enjoy the NCAA tourney, and also friendly patrons. Bar is clean, service was fast and attentive. Don't be intiminated if there is a crowd up front, make your way to the back if the bar and you'll find space. Will be back to try more of the food and shuffleboard! Food review: Yum bar food. I would take away, that's how good the food is here! Must get: 1. PUB FRIES 2. KERRY'S WINGS.

We love this place. Great if you’re craving some bar food. Everything is really delicious and they let us bring our dog which was a huge plus! Depending on when you go there may or may not be wait, it’s kind of just sit wherever you can get a seat

Bar coastal wings are back!! If you’re looking for great wings on the UES, this place is where it’s at. Sauces are so good, wings are crispy, just wish they were slightly more plump. Slightly odd that they don’t offer table service, but maybe they will in the future when they grow from their soft open menu! Also - don’t sleep on the pub fries.

This place is so new that you can smell the fresh varnish. And this place is going to be awesome! So many TV's, so many seats, there's even a shuffleboard table. I came here to catch a World Cup game so it was during the week and during the day. Yet there were more people here then any other bar in the neighborhood. For NFL playoffs? March Madness? NBA and NHL? This place is going to be popping! You can just tell, it's got the recipe for success... Enjoy

Great vibe, perfect spot for watching basketball, baseball or any sport. Really good choice of beer (I recommend IPA from the tap on the right with orange background) and nice wings.

Yelp
They have the best chicken tenders in New York City, and yes I'm serious. I'm just as surprised as you! The chicken quality is phenomenal and they have excellent Buffalo sauce. They have other flavors as well. So far I've tried the hot honey, old bay dry rub, and of course the Buffalo sauces. I don't recommend getting Kerry's Way as a sauce, it's too sour. I highly recommend getting the hot Buffalo sauce, it's very flavorful. It's still a regular bar and has the same vibe as other dive bars. I haven't had alcohol here, but I'm sure it has everything. Service is consistent and the bartenders are all very friendly. They would also tell you that Plug Uglies has the best chicken tenders in the city.

Yelp
Arguably some of the best wings in NYC.. tried the tenders and the wings in the special and in Nashville hot. Very delicious- crispy, came out fast, and the servers were very nice and attentive. I would definitely come back and try more flavors! Lots of seating (bar, tables, booths) , plenty of TVs for games, good place to go to watch a game.

Yelp
Plug Uglies UES is our go to bar for NBA and Football games. Plenty of TV's, staff is great, and there's always a solid fun crowd. If going with a group, make a reservation for a table or booth because it does get crowded. If going solo or just two, try and show up early to get a spot. Food: Can't go wrong with Kerry's Way chicken wings. Truly the reason I come here. We've ordered takeout and it's fine, but they definitely taste best fresh. I recently discovered their Smashburger and it was also really good.

Yelp
First time back here at the old Bar -Costal place ! Pretty fixed up in fact, this brick walls now inside the place and new tables and chairs ' but the reason why we're here is for wings and Smashburger, we ordered the Smashburger with Swiss cheese and onions, and they gave you a side of potato chips not fries, which is weird. We sat at the bar and ordered. We had two beers. They're about nine dollars now apiece. The wings were very good here Chrisp not too well done and edible and the blue cheese is very good with them. The service is what it is. It's not very fast but they'll get you to your order. It's the same size place so be patient. Smashburger could've been a little bit more done with with the toast. . My friend and I split the burger in half but it will be a bit messy considering why it's callled a smash burger.

Yelp
Pretty chill atmosphere with nice bartenders and okay food. I got some wine which was okay, ordered some wings and they were double fried which some people love but I personally don't. They had lots of games on their TVs and it was crowded but not overwhelming. Would totally come back but probably stay away from wine.

Yelp
Plug Uglies was formerly Bar Coastal which I never stepped foot Into. I came here for some belated birthday drinks. When I got there it was not crowded at all. I ordered a Moscow Mule and I must say it was tasty. I ordered a sierra Nevada Hazy IPA next. The bartender was very nice. The space is great has plenty of seating. In the other part of the bar there is a shuffle board game. This is a great bar to come gather with friends for some food and drinks for sports game or just a weekend of fun. They have a few tvs here too. They supposedly have great wings here too with many different flavors. I did not get a chance to try them out though. Maybe next time.

Yelp
I came here on a Saturday night to watch the Lions game. We lost, sad. It was pretty crowded so my friend and I had to stand. They had hooks for coats in the back area and that's where we congregated. There's a lot of TVs which is good. I got the Austin cider ($9) and it was fine. I wish they had Downeast cider though! I'd definitely come back to watch more games.
google avatar

Lawrence S.

Yelp
The wings here are decent wish they had more flavors. Kinda rowdy on game nights when I'm picking up. The staff are cool. They seem to be always changing up the decor that's good! They're investing

Jonathan Goc G.

Yelp
Buffalonian here. Wings are as good as almost any spot in Buffalo. If you're looking for the real deal in NYC, Pug Uglies is your spot. Phenomenal service on top of it. A must visit!

Sydney G.

Yelp
Fast and Easy Takeout!! HUGE portions and the food was really great. Burger and Buffalo Chicken Sandwich were delicious and pretty big side fries with it! The sweet potato fries were so great and the small size was really generous. Our food was ready within 20 minutes on a busy weeknight and from what I saw, it looked like a lively bar!
google avatar

Jenny R.

Yelp
It's the best boneless wings in the UES, but you will want to get there early if there's games on or go on a quieter night
google avatar

Katie B.

Yelp
Love Plug Uglies! This is the only Bay Area bar I know of in NYC so you can always come here to watch a Warriors, Giants, or Niners game. They have a pretty spacious bar for most nights but it gets crowded when there's a good game on so keep that in mind if you don't like a crowded bar.

Yelp
Self-service/order at the bar. If you order food, they give you a number stand and they will bring it out to you when ready. Solid draft, bottle, and can offerings (beer, ciders, radlers). Fortunately, A full bar so any standard or classic cocktails can be made. Wings come in 8 piece, 15 piece, and higher - one flavor per set/order. We got 8 piece korean spice (soy-garlic) and 8 piece honey mustard. Each order came with carrots and celery, blue cheese dipping sauce and ranch (if you have a preference, let them know when you put in your order). Came out relatively quickly and saucy. Decor gave off southern aesthetics but the quantity of tv's and the general crowd was giving dive and sports bar. Not a bad idea to drop by for a game.

Yelp
Clean, friendly place. Well designed, great air conditioning. Lots of beers on tap. Big space.

Yelp
New UES sports bar at the corner of E78th & 1st Ave! 3 big screens in front of the bar, 2 smaller ones on opposite side of bar by booth seatings. It's at the old Bar Coastal location. They opened last month in time for the NYC Marathon. Quite a few draft beers including Stella. Great place to watch the game! Kitchen opening soon in a few weeks, but they allow you bring your own food until then.

Yelp
Pretty good successor to Bar Coastal. Wings are good and they offer a variety of different sauces. Pretty decent beer menu as well. Their burgers are solid as they're smash style so you get a good crust. The fries are like the cottage fries that JG Mellon has except these are actually crispy. A few things could be improved though: 1. I went when it was very hot and humid outside, but they had all the windows open. The bar was very warm. Rather have windows closed and have air conditioning 2. They couldn't do multiple sauces for one order of wings which seems odd. 3. You have to get up and order at the bar, which is fine, but I don't think the default tip on the machines when I play should be 20, 22, and 25% when I had to seat myself, go up and place my order, and then later get my own water. 15 to 18 percent seems more appropriate for a default tip. 4. I was given ranch for my wings by default while my GF got blue cheese. Would have liked to have been asked my preference. Overall, solid and I'll go again (just went it's nicer outside)

Yelp
A terrific sports bar on the UES. It's very clean and has 5 or 6 flat screen TVs in the mane room Be prepared for a younger crowd but very civilized in general . The food looks good too All around good energy on Sunday afternoon

Yelp
I loved this space when it was Bar Coastal and was upset when it closed. I was very happy to see someone was going to reopen the space as it's a great bar space. The place looks exactly the same as it did before - minus the "bar coastal decor" which was good to see. Why fix what isn't broken? My only concern for Pug Uglies is that they have been open for about half a year now and are still operating off an extremely limited "soft opening" food menu. Hopefully they'll expand at some point. With that said, I really enjoyed the fried cheese curds and boneless chicken wings. I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
for anyone attempting to order buffalo cauliflower, this is the most buffalo thing you will ever taste unless buffalo fetish, pls avoid. Bar vibe is legit.
google avatar

Sven F.

Yelp
Cool interior. Wish they would put the sound on for big games instead of the dodgy music mix (imo). First time I had their burger it was amazing! Second time, the bun was so hot it was obviously heated in the microwave. Bartenders are cool. Want to love this place. Just needs some tweaking to establish their identity. If you are a sports bar, be a sports bar.

Chris E.

Yelp
Live this place. Great bartenders! Wings are wonderful! Fun place to hang out a catch a game.
google avatar

Amanda H.

Yelp
This is a fantastic bar! They have amazing drinks, a stellar beer list, and cheap happy hour prices. I always enjoy coming here with classmates for fun social events.
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
Tried to go here today between 1-1:30pm to try it out for the first time but they were closed even though Yelp said they were open. Please update your hours on Yelp.
google avatar

Vinay S.

Yelp
One of the more animated Spots bars in the UES, with plenty of available TVs and beers by the pitcher to enjoy a series of games. $8 a drink. 4.25/5 stars as a day bar.

Darcie W.

Yelp
I have never been treated with such disrespect as I have been at plug uglies. After spending over 150$ on drinks and food, the manager came over to ask me when we would be done with our table as there was a reservation occurring in the next 30 min. Our table politely said we would be gone in 20 minutes. He came back in 10 minutes extremely rude and angry that we were not gone yet. I have never felt so disrespected in a restaurant ever. There was no sign that the table was reserved and it was extremely rude. I will not be returning.

Yelp
Came in for happy hour and had a few craft beers -- Industrial Arts Wrench seemed to be the big seller. Kitchen opened a few months ago. Attentive bartenders. Active sports bar with 5+ TVs and NCAA tourney on. Good food options although only fried but it was best fried food smell I've experienced to entice food purchases! Energetic vibe and indoor seating with outdoor feeling. Only negative was sidewalk shed that hid the establishment from street view on 1st Avenue.

Matthew N.

Yelp
Great set up! Awesome eclectic interior design with a warm and cozy feeling. Many TVs surrounded by supportive, local and distant fans. Huge beverage selection served up by a friendly and attentive staff . We stop in here every chance we get .

Allen R.

Yelp
Excellent place to socialize over a cocktail, a beer, a whiskey, etc. This has all the ingredients to become a neighborhood fixture.

Jeff B.

Yelp
New outpost of this bar just opened on the UES. Really nice interior with ver comfortable bar stools. Limited menu right now but the wings were excellent with great flavor and crispiness. On the flip side the 2 female bartenders were pretty grumpy and inattentive. The place was not crowded as it was a Tuesday and pouring rain. This seems to be a trend in NYC lately and was hoping this place would be different.

Betsy G.

Yelp
This place is the bomb!!!! The friend chicken sandwich tossed in Kerry's way, don't doubt me. Order it.

Jason M.

Yelp
The owner has no clue about NY sports. When the entire crowd wants to listen to the sound of a big game the owner NEEDS music. Are you kidding me? This place is a joke.
