A Detroit Restaurant Manager Finds a New Job at a Grocery Store During the Pandemic | Eater Detroit

"A West Bloomfield grocery store that hired displaced restaurant workers to fill essential roles implemented visible safety measures: designated staff to collect and sanitize carts, personnel stationed to reassure customers that carts are sanitized, plexiglass shields at checkouts, and provision of gloves and hand sanitizer for employees and shoppers. The store has adjusted operations in step with state and county guidance — including symptom screening and temperature checks for employees, suspension of bottle returns, and answering customer questions about curbside pickup and stock — which most patrons have met with understanding. Employees perform varied tasks from sanitizing carts to checking out customers, face ongoing anxiety about exposure despite precautions, and some supplement income with gig work; the store’s proactive precautions have been a notable aspect of the shopping experience during the pandemic." - Brenna Houck

Ok so it all depends on your priorities. Do you want gorgeous shelves, stocked with posh and unique brands and foods, never an empty space because everything is perfectly curated, and you're willing to pay for it without much concern of that little number on the receipt? This is your place. It's a beautiful grocery experience with high quality selections. But not for those who are currency conscious. Side note: their beer selection is among the best available anywhere.

Google
Always a well stocked, beautiful, clean store. Knowledgeable and pleasant employees —today, Tony in Liquor Dept was very helpful. Carry a lot of gluten free, lactose free, preservative free products not available in other stores…so worth the trip. Wish there was a Plum closer to Rochester Hills.

Google
This is one of the best high-end markets to go to. They sometimes have good sales too. A great experience even if you only come out with a couple of items.

Plum Market is gorgeous — beautifully arranged displays that make you want to buy everything. The produce is top-notch with plenty of organic choices. My watermelon was so fresh and sweet I even enjoyed the pale flesh near the rind, and the celery was crisp and juicy. Staff are friendly and helpful, making shopping here a true pleasure.

Google
Absolutely love plum market, especially the West Bloomfield location. It’s a bit bigger than the one in Birmingham so it has a bigger variety and it’s a little less congested. Specifically, they have a lot more homeopathic remedies and alternative medicines and teas which I really appreciated. The dessert section is absolutely phenomenal, I have yet to have a dessert from Plum that I did not like. Plum market also has events, specifically I went to a wine tasting with my father in early June 2024. It was a very well put together and curated event that educated the guests on the wine while keeping it light and easy. The event managers were extremely diligent and misfield very welcomed. Well, Plum market is not what I would consider a budget or discount grocery store, the health benefits, and variety of products, outweighs the challenge of the cost you may Kwell shop here. However, they do have a phenomenal rewards program with a mobile app and if you utilize it advantage, you can save 10 to 20% on your total itemized bill each visit! if you can afford to purchase the things that you value the most, I would highly suggest going here, and then take it from there for your comfortability level!

Google
The team at this location are exceptionally friendly and helpful. They take care to put out good quality items. I shop for myself regularly, and fulfill Instacart orders for neighbors, and it's a pleasant experience. I also appreciate their online shopping and pickup option. When I have been too unwell to shop for myself, they have a very easy way to shop online through the app, and I can have family or friends pick up for me. We are fortunate to have this grocery store in our community.

Google
I love this store with its fresh produce and healthy, delicious products. The setup is beautiful. They’re stocked with tea, chips, alcohol, fruits and vegetables. Be sure to stop by the ready to eat area. It’s like going to the grocery store for takeout. It’s worth a trip if you haven’t been. They even put fresh flowers in the bathrooms. I was impressed.

Yelp
Not your everyday grocery to go to but a must when you're looking for fresh and quality ingredients for home cooking and special occasions. Ready to go meals is a delight to see with your eyes as you walk by their display case - meticulously prepared and stacked by the prepared foods department. Meals priced per pound but really taste good. Roasted chicken is highly recommended to bring home and enjoy for lunch or dinner - left over chicken soup the next day :-) no time or no talent to cook - grab a container of soup, wraps, salads or dressings. Make your own bowl of salad, pasta, side and main dishes - priced per pound as well so choose wisely what you pick and put in a container. Not sure about the taste? You may ask the food handler to try a sample from the display case. wine selections over the top. Wine sommelier approved. Not only wine but also an abundant selection of liquor and non alcoholic beverages are available on display. No idea about wines? You may ask suggestions from the wine experts assigned at this section. Admire the variety of flowers (in pots, bouquet arrangements or individually sold), every day greeting cards and yes! The chocolates from See's, Sanders and high percentage cacao can be seen and purchased. Plum Market is all the way high quality - starting from their produce, the wine, the meat, cheese and deli, hot and cold foods, floral, cafe, apothecary section and educational toys for kids. Known also for selling Zingerman breads and pastries, Atchaz pies and Detroit based coffee company. Aisles are wider, the floors shiny (but slip resistant) and clean, perishable and non perishable items are well organized/categorized. Plum Market team members are very helpful and knowledgeable. Theirs the vibe of "you get what you pay for" customer service. Parking is expansive and free. Expect to see fancy looking automobiles. No valet parking yet :-) The West Bloomfield location is my favorite, next to Bloomfield, Ann Arbor, downtown Detroit and Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

Yelp
Awesome store if you're not a price conscious shopper. They have the best of everything and make Whole Foods look like Aldi lol. 90% of people can't afford to make this their regular grocery store, but it's great for special occasions and when you feel like treating yourself. They used to sell all of their liquor at state minimum prices, but they no longer do that. Sigh... Kind of a bummer that they weren't satisfied with that level of profit.

Yelp
Extremely disappointing experience. This used to be one of my favorite markets to go to. And what was an honest mistake from of the cashiers/bag persons turned into a really sour experience overall. The team member had forgotten to bag an item from my purchase, again honest mistake. However, making your guests have to drive all the way back and to offer not even a 5% coupon or some gesture of kindness speaks volumes of the upper management's decision making and policies and procedures. The customer service rep, Rachel, was very nice and gracious. But it's really frustrating to just be given a "sorry about that" with no offer to make it right. It almost felt like the team members were breathing a sigh of relief when I didn't push the issue. What kind of environment is the ownership team and upper management creating for their guest experiences? Not only that but I get out of my car when I went to go pick up my items and see the parking space in front of me is covered in glass. Again, a big reflection on the values and attention to detail that the leadership is communicating to their team. As a fan of the brand, please do better.

Yelp
I usually have a good experience here but this girl named Blake was incredibly rude and has very low manners to be in a position of dealing with the public. I would recommend this store but not this employee to deal with. The paczkis that they had brought in from Palace looked just ok and I came all this way to get a strawberry bundle which I was told they had only to get here and they have NONE.

Yelp
We were in the area and decided to stop in here just to pick up apples and bananas. The store is on the smaller side and really nice with a good selection of items. The produce was nice as was the fresh meat counter. The guys who helped us at the fresh meat counter and Kitchen prepared foods were both very friendly and helpful. The young lady who helped us in the bakery seemed to be bothered by us, not friendly at all. Ambiance, it's a grocery store, clean, well stocked and priced on the high side. We will not shop here as regular customers but MIGHT stop in for a specialty item when in the area but even that is doubtful. There are other stores nearby like Nino Salvaggio, Trader Joes, Whole Foods plus a Kroger that are much more reasonable for weekly grocery shopping. The 3 stars are for the bakery service and prices. UPDATE, the peach pie is terrible because the filling is like a peach paste or something it's just awful. I will leave my review stars at 3

Yelp
Please train your newbie baggers to NOT over pack the paper bags. I always test them by feeling the weight . I asked twice. Nicely I also found one of my bagel bags with a smashed bagel; this was not damaged when I selected it from the shelf. So that's 7-8 minutes I won't get back; having to run back in and replace

Mo M.

Yelp
I do understand making sure people are not stealing but watching people who have work badges like they are thieves and hounding them is not a good customer experience. Every time I come in here there is a young lady with glasses who stands at the line and is watching my every move, it makes me and my other African American co-workers feel uncomfortable. People make honest mistakes when scanning items and she makes people feel as if they are stealing. I will no longer be spending my money here and my coworkers also feel the same way.

Yelp
So nice and the staff really shines with their expertise I told them I was cooking a vegan family dinner and they really helped me execute the vision I felt like a chef in a culinary expert market they way they made suggestions and stuff would highly recommend for any kitchen artist

Fariba H.

Yelp
Thank you Plum Market for handing out the most beautiful rose stem, helping celebrate the International Women's Day

Yelp
After driving past this market several times curiosity got the best of us. We stopped in purely to explore what the store had to offer. We casually perused all of the aisles. The fruit and produce appears to fresh, good quality and well stocked. After perusing through the remainder of the aisles and found items of interests in each of them. They have plenty of options including vegan, gluten-free and organic items. I was surprised to find that they even had aa children's section with toys and books. This seems like a very nice store - like the kind of place that I'd be a regular customer.

Yelp
I would have given Plum a higher rating, but I am very sad they closed the frozen yogurt section of their store. It was like Pinkberry, and was something I looked forward to eating. Now the section is under construction and I am not sure what they are doing with the space. I loved their tart yogurt and they had great toppings. They also had a wine counter which I never tried, but they used to hold tasting events. They did move the coffee counter to the bakery area. On the other hand, I tried some of their prepared food and I was wowed beyond belief. I came here to buy sweets for a party and decided to get a slice of their spinach pie. It was THE BEST spinach pie I have ever tried. I need to run back there an get more. I also tried their chicken salad with grapes. It was so chunky and fresh and delicious, I should have purchased a larger portion. It disappeared in a few minutes. Their tortellini salad was also fresh and cheesy. I highly recommend their prepared food section, pricey but the flavor made up for it. I also got a variety of baked goods that were equally delicious. I purchased a variety of their cannolis, very good, their baklava, wonderful, mini carrot cake and flourless chocolate cakes sources from a Novi bakery, great, and a half pecan pie from Zingerman's, perhaps THE BEST pecan pie I have ever encountered, I was wowed again. I also like the beer selection here, it is very diverse and you get a lot of good finds. The wine selection is great too. Their products look good, but my problem is with the pricing. I come here for unique brands and selections that you cannot find elsewhere, but would not purchase the goods you can find at a grocery store that charges a lot less. Still, I will keep coming for their gems, like the baked goods and prepared foods. It is worth the visit for those alone. Especially since they sources a lot of food from Michigan businesses which I like to support.

Yelp
Plum Market is a wonderful grocery store. The produce is fresh and well stocked, the whole store is spotless, and their staff is amazing. I love coming here when I'm looking to take special products to a friend's house. Their house made foods (soups, meals, dips, cold pressed juices) are delicious. My favorite place to linger is the floral section. They always have a unique and beautiful collection of flowers. Plum Market is wonderful and can get a little pricey but their products are of the best quality.

Yelp
Has the eire of Whole Foods. The food and vegetables are some if the freshest I've ever had. The hot and cold food section is awesome. Something for everyone, both vegan and meat eaters and anything in between. Great team of people there. Will help you find anything

Yelp
The healthy food options were wonderful, the check out lanes were well staffed and workers were very kind. The salad bar looked beautiful, and the decorations you could purchase for Easter got us! Tulips to brighten our families day. We moved to this area, and we will definitely get a rewards card and return often. If you have gluten or dairy restrictions, tons of choices here.
google avatar

Yelp
Everything looks so good and all the staff are so nice and helpful. It is pricey but you get what you pay for.

Yelp
The variety of items here is quite diverse and some unique options in every possible area of wants and needs here. It's a one stop shop for flowers, prepared foods to be packed and weighed, a decent size apothecary, flowers and plants, seafood, meat, deli and bakery counters, gifts abound. Rows of wonderful finds. It could take me hours to go through every aisle and really study all that is offered. I went for basic essentials, honey, eggs, peanut butter and some flax seed meal, no problem finding anything I needed. Some mineral waters. It's Sunday and they cook and offer samples of this and that all over, some manned and others just offered in random end caps. I don't tend to try things and it's good I ate ahead of coming to shop here then.

Yelp
While the store is very nice and has great product, my first experience will cause me never to do business with them again. After finding 10 bottles of a very difficult to source wine available on the wine,-searcher website at this location, their manager proceeded to raise the price because they had the wine price too low online versus what they were selling it for in the store. Shameful bait and switch practice. I'll never do business with this location again.

Peak Q.

Yelp
Offputting video cameras added to an already annoyingly slow and overly sensitive self checkout. Will literally never come back if I can help it. I can't support or recommend this business any more.
google avatar

Yelp
Always fresh produce, seafood meats, and deli and carry out products. everything about Plum is wonderful. We love the bakery and the food bars.
google avatar

Mark B.

Yelp
They have everything and the quality is good. Baked goods from Zingermans! A wonderful butcher. Even if we don't need anything we still like going to the store. If you need a gift a great place to go!
google avatar

Yelp
I love this grocery store! It is pricey but they specialize in quality goods and have lots of organic and health conscious alternatives to the regular grocery store. There are quite a few deals if you watch their ads. Dairy is very competitively priced. All the sushi is marked half off at 8pm, which happens to be when I stop by. Might be a coincidence or might be my subconscious conspiring to add a few inches to my waste line. They also mark down bread at the end of the day. I really enjoy their salad bar, with a wide variety of ingredients. There is a great coffee shop/yogurt shop attached and you are welcome to eat anything you purchased there. The coffee they serve is Zingermans. There also a wine bar and they host regular wine tastings. They are priced well and usually well attended. In general the wine and liquor selection is excellent and they carry some of the more unique packaging. If you want something really special, check out the wine cellar. There is a door by the sommelier stand in the back. Best of all, they must treat their employees well because they are always friendly and welcoming.

Yelp
They always have what I need. Specifically, they have a great selection of gluten-free groceries and frozen items. The staff is fantastic and tremendously helpful!
google avatar

Glenn C.

Yelp
Vegetables and produce always plentiful and fresh. Great wine selection. Fish and meat selection excellent. Premade meals and baked goods selection great.

Joe B.

Yelp
The store is exceptionally well organized, clean and well-lit. The produce and meat/seafood/poultry sections provide as high as if not the highest quality products compared to other stores. The wine and liquor sections are very well stocked and diverse in the selection. In particular the people in the wine section are very helpful
google avatar

Natasha V.

Yelp
I love Plum Market, it's the only place I can find Adesso Wine around the area. The spinach pie in the hot area is my favorite, a close second is the sushi. This is not supermarket sushi at all, it's Mon Jin Lau from Troy and it's fresh, tasty and done by accomplished sushi chefs. A tip is to pick a day when your favorite roll goes on sale, one roll is on sale every week and I think they are $7.99. If you pay the regular amount is $9.99. Another tip, download the app, there are always coupons you can automatically clip that you would know about unless you get the App. One more, several bakery items go on sale after 8pm! I have two favorite cheeses, see photos and the wine I mentioned for your enjoyment. Hopefully you don't rush in and leave none for me...make sure I have a bottle left, eh?

Barb Y.

Yelp
The produce is always exceptional! As is the meat selection. Store always looks beautiful.
google avatar

Jacalyn S.

Yelp
Healthy, delicious prepared foods and produce, wide variety of products, very pleasant service and checkout, nice variety of baked goods
google avatar

Michael T.

Yelp
Very unpleasant and snobby stuff. I was trying to order a gift basket for my family member, was told they are charging 50% of whatever you select to just arrange that basket. Really? So if I choose $200 bottle of champagne they charge me $100 just to put it in a basket?! I spoke with their store manager Nicholas who made it sound like not a big deal, saying that their customers are happy with this type of ripoff... Luckily I don't live in Michigan and don't go to Plum Market

Judith J.

Yelp
Always great service and good selection of organic products. Store is always clean and well stocked.
google avatar

Nadia B.

Yelp
Plum Market has amazing quality produce and meats. It is such a beautiful super market with a large wine | liquor | beer selection. I suggest going to Plum Market hungry because they have exceptional food. I ordered the honey siracha grilled salmon and I can honestly say it was the best salmon I've ever had. Tip: There's a See's Candies inside!!!

Susan D.

Yelp
Yum Very expensive Big gourmet varieties Take out - small square of Turkey lasagna for instance hi 28
google avatar

Marie L.

Yelp
Okay, yes, they are expensive but sometimes good quality just costs more. Plum always has what I need and has good sales. I appreciate their commitment to high quality food.
google avatar

Sharon S.

Yelp
The service at Plum Market is excellent. The meat and produce are very good and unlike other stores their team members are always helpful and friendly. And you get real live cashiers that pack your groceries. Add to that, they have specialty items.

Gail B.

Yelp
I used the drive up service because I was trying to save time due to a hectic work schedule and on the day before Christmas Eve. I ordered then had a pick up at Noon. I arrived at 12:15 and notified via their app I was there - nothing. I texted based on the # on the pole outside. The car next to me got theirs so I assumed I would be next. Over an hour later of texting to their number and app I went in. You guessed it they weren't going to bring it. They claimed they didn't get notice from either place the app or number on the phone. Ridiculous and I'm calling BS on this. DONT EVER USE THE DRIVE UP OPTION REGARDLESS OF HOW MUCH THEY GIVE YOU. Their attitude from one of the Managers was less then professional. It was a sarcastic 'Have a Nice Holiday' with that I am so done with them. I'll move to Market Basket or Whole Food. Arrogant!

iris r.

Yelp
Excellent food choices. The produce is outstanding. The staff is courteous & helpful.
google avatar

Elina D.

Yelp
The staff is so rude here. It is getting consistently worse. My mother-in-law and I were talking about this the other day. She had stopped shopping at plum because of how rude some of the staff are, especially the cashiers that practically chase you out of the store with their terrible behavior. My friends have also stopped shopping at Plum. Think about it, if they have treated us with such disrespect when times are good, can you imagine how they are treating people in times like this? I have complained to the store manager in the past and nothing has been done. Word travels like wildfire, and I can tell you your reputation is growing in a negative light. So keep doing nothing and you will get nothing in return. You're losing lots of money from good customers that won't come back. I don't mind paying your inflated prices, but at least be courteous to me when I'm in your store spending money.

Jessica C.

Yelp
For the most part I absolutely love this store! The fruits and vegetables are fresh ( there have been only a few exceptions). The wine, beer and alcohol selection is great! The salad and soup bars are the best!!!! They have so many on the go food choices and everything I have tasted is delicious. My only negative is it's pricey. The people that work there are very friendly and informative about the products....therefore service is excellent. The ambiance and atmosphere is very pleasant. Would recommend!

Elissa G.

Yelp
Great market...great selections in all departments (a little pricey but worth it), for any dietary restrictions there are several options...store is clean and well organized...you can always find what you need...great staff too!

Katie S.

Yelp
Good selection of food. I especially love their fruit selection. You can get the best seasonal fruit.
google avatar

Audry V.

Yelp
Amazing food and atmosphere, and friendly service, the hot foods are home made, the Italian sausage is the best!

Linda C.

Yelp
Great service; professional staff; well-stocked products. This a great place to shop.

Gwen A.

Yelp
I always appreciate the wonderful employees and the amazing selection of specialty items that make it easier to feed a family with allergies.

Laurie B.

Yelp
Such a great selection of fresh produce and great take-away selections. Too tired to cook: lots of healthy tasty choices. Store is very clean and always personnel available to assist.

Rebecca Z.

Yelp
The quality of the produce is always excellent. The service behind the meat/seafood counter is always helpful and friendly. I shop here usually once a week .

M H.

Yelp
Always have product in the store. Very well stocked and if missing something by chance they will contact you you when it will be in and set it aside tagged with your name.
google avatar

Yelp
I wish I can put -10 on customer service! That's a sham of night shift store manager that refuse sell liquor to my friend who's 38 years old with a valid license because I was with him without my ID! I'm 31 tourist that visiting my friend. But I can tell that decision was raise based! Btw I do show her my Israeli immigration officer ID.

Julie R.

Yelp
I like to visit Plum Market for the unique options they carry and their cheese selection is excellent!

Yelp
This is a very cool market. I got coconut flour and some super nice candies. Great place for fancy Christmas baskets. Lots of samples always and a tremendous amount of healthy food choices. This is one of my main grocery stores I like shopping along with Trader Joe's. The fermin iberico de bellota is aged two months. The loin is one of the most rare and appreciated cuts from the Iberico de Bellota pig. Marinated with salt, pimenton and other spices and cured three to four months. Lomo is pale red in color on the outside, bright red on the inside and when cut, has marble-like appearance as a result of the infiltration of fat from the acorn. It cost $119.00 a pound. One of the most expensive deli meats known to man. The price is reflected in its age and quality. Marc and Matthew Jonna are 3rd generation retailers who had been serving in a store begun by their father. The store, known as Merchant of Vino Marketplace is an organic, specialty and natural wine and food store, which has six stores in the Midwest. Years later, the brothers decided to come up with a novel grocery concept. The concept was later branded as Plum Market. The first store was opened in the year 2007. This means that Plum Market has been in business for more than five years. The company has a very simple philosophy. The philosophy is setting out to create an amazing shopping experience for its customers. The company holds the belief that choice is fundamental, and this is clearly reflected in the product selection. There is a mix of organic, natural, local and specialty products. There are numerous aisles containing unexpected delights and inviting aromas. Plum Market is more than a neighborhood supermarket. It is committed towards changing the shopping experience.
