I was in New Haven, CT recently, hunting for housing, and by the end of the day… let’s just say nature was calling. Loudly. Every spot I ducked into gave me the same line: “Restrooms are for customers only.” Well, I wasn’t in the market for a latte or a bagel, I just needed relief!
Then I wandered into Plush, the skateboard boutique at 96 Orange Street, and met some of the kindest, coolest young people you could hope to run into. Tommy, one of the owners, didn’t hesitate— “Of course,” he said, and personally showed me the way. That small act of kindness meant a lot more than he probably realized in that moment.
Fast forward a couple of weeks: I call to apologize for not posting the review I had promised. Who picks up? Sirmichael—Plush’s very first hire—just as warm and welcoming as Tommy.
Now here’s the kicker: I’m 67. I’ve never been on a skateboard in my life, and I probably won’t be starting now (my balance is good, but not that good). However, as a former owner of a thriving restaurant business, I know a lot about business and customer care. I can tell you this: if I were looking to get into skateboarding—or buy a top-quality board—Plush is where I’d go, and Tommy and Sirmichael are exactly the kind of people I’d want guiding me.
Why? Because if that’s how they treat a total stranger who isn’t spending a dime, just imagine the kind of experience you’ll have as an actual paying customer. My bet? Outstanding.
Fun fact: I’ve since learned it’s pretty much standard practice in downtown New Haven to keep restrooms off-limits to non-customers. Which makes Plush stand out all the more.
So, Tommy and Sirmichael—keep doing what you’re doing. You’ve got a fan for life, even if I’m a fan without a skateboard.
