9 Delicious Cheese Shops That Ship Nationwide

"Founded by Colonel John Coolidge (President Coolidge’s father) in 1890, this creamery specializes in small-batch cheddars made with cows’ milk from the neighboring family farm. Their best-selling cheddars include Original Plymouth and flavored choices, like Black Truffle and Garlic Peppercorn. Looking for an endorsement of their quality? Even Julia Child claimed them as her favorite."

This was my first stop among Vermont's cheese trail. Came to sample their cheese and do the self-guided tour. I arrived around 1 pm and was surprisingly able to see some parts of the cheesemaking production. There were 3 cheese samples. Didn't like any. But I enjoyed the exhibit upstairs showcasing many of the original equipment used back in the day to make cheese and the history of Plymouth Cheese. Highly recommend if you don't mind a self-guided tour! Also, the surrounding area/estate is cute. Didn't realize it's a historic site. There are clean public restrooms down the street but none in Plymouth Cheese.

My husband and I are visiting Vermont and surrounding stated on vacation from Indiana. We decided to embark on some of the cheese trail and it lead it to this location. Carolyn is an absolute gem! So friendly, gave us history of not only the cheese shop but also the Calvin Coolidge site, AND insisted on my husband choosing a free block of cheese because it was his birthday! She then went on and gave us ideas of other things and drives that we might enjoy in the area. The cheese was all wonderful and we also enjoyed the museum. Carolyn made the stop even more special, I will never forget her and her kindness .

A response to the owner: You already had a stack of toothpicks next to the sample cups. My suggestion is simply to omit the cups because after reading lots of bad reviews, they seem to be the issue. Toothpicks also lay flat when dropped and don't present a realistic hazard. I would have been happy with my experience if there were no cheese samples at all. The issue myself and many others have had is one of quality, not quantity. I wholeheartedly agree that kindness, compassion, and hospitality are cornerstones of customer service. The cheese was good but the customer service was not. My husband and I spent the weekend camping at Coolidge State Park and saw the signs for Plymouth Cheese so we wanted to make a point to go before we left as we have Plymouth Cheese in our local Co-Op. Unfortunately (for us) we got there at 4:30 when the listed hours are that they close at 5. While we weren't greeted warmly upon entry, that was fine as there were other customers and (we assumed it had been) a long summer day of tourism. We picked our cheese and while preparing to purchase it, the older woman behind the counter asked if we'd had either before which we had not. Your clerk made a point to offer samples of both the cheese we were getting and another - since she didn't have second one as a sample. However she did not make any mention that I shouldn't touch more than one cup when SHE invited ME to sample BOTH. I took the first sample and made a point of asking my husband if he wanted one so I gave him one while he got his wallet. Which was apparently a cardinal sin. I got the 4th degree for daring to take two cups and had to explain I fed my husband one when again your clerk asked me to take multiple samples. After which we attempted to pay and she aggressively took my husband's debit card out of his hand because each store in the entire country seems to have the tap button in a different location. I understand that she may have had a long day but based on these comments am inclined to believe she may also not enjoy a customer facing position. I worked and trained customer service reps, to have multiple customers going home feeling this way and clearly nothing is being done to rectify the situation tells me the owners either don't care or really see it as a problem. You've been suggested signage in previous comments which is a fantastic idea or get rid of the paper cups completely and instead simply place cubes of cheese on platters with toothpicks nearby if you really want to reduce, reuse, recycle. This is more intuitive and people will pick up on what you want to happen. While I've always enjoyed your cheese, this has certainly left a bitter taste that will make me hesitate the next time I'm at the store going to select some.

At checkout the woman behind the counter offered us to sample the cheese. My wife took a piece and then fed one to me as I fumbled for my wallet. Two samples of maybe 1cm cube cheese. The cashier then berated my wife for taking so many samples. We were embarrassed, felt unwelcome, and only completed our purchase to attempt to navigate our way out of an awkward situation. The cheese was wonderful, but this will always leave a sour taste in our mouth.

I would like to start by saying this review is not for the cheese, the 2 pieces I had before being yelled at by the cheese nazi were delicious. I was there visiting the Coolidge museum and decided to stop by since this was on the grounds. There was NO signage, and the cheese samples were set out on trays in cups by flavor. I picked up 2 and tried them when the woman behind the counter started yelling at me that I was only allowed to try one piece. I apologized and threw my cups away and she yelled at me again for throwing away the cups stating they were trying to reuse the cups. Not only is that completely unsanitary, I want to emphasize there is NO SIGNAGE stating only one piece and to not throw away the cups. I ended up leaving there in tears for how she spoke to me. This is not a good representation for any company to have and especially not for a tourists first experience!

I saw a piece on the CBS morning news a few years ago and marked Plymouth on Google Maps for a future visit. I was hoping for a bit more. I enjoy learning about where my food comes from. While Plymouth has glass windows around the cheese production area, there is minimal effort to educate the visitor. There was one lady ringing up orders and passing out samples but again, minimal effort to educate or socialize. The drive up to Plymouth is stunning and made the visit worthwhile.

We stopped by on our way back from Killington mountain. The museum, Leo the staff and the cheese was the best Vermont cheese I have had. It's a really unique and cool property in the middle of nowhere, but 8 to 10 minutes driving from Woodstock Vermont. We have had 3 different of their cheeses including the Lawsons sip of sunshine cheese which was really cool and tasty. We will definitely be back and highly recommend to anyone looking for usa history and loving cheese. We try all types of cheese and have had many local and small to big Vermont brands and this places cheese was incredible. You get free samples of the hunter cheese which was made in 2018 and today is 2023. President cooley made cheese here and that was cool.

Yelp
The idea that this cheese place was opened to recreate the original cheese process manufactured here is really interesting. It's both a way to learn about old-fashioned manufacturing techniques and also, a good place to get food. Win-win. Downstairs they make the cheese and customers can watch (that's my understanding, they weren't making cheese when I went) and upstairs is the old equipment for contrast and a small exhibit for additional information. Though the equipment is modern, the process is the same (along with any additional safety/food inspections). It's a great living example of bringing the past to life and promoting making local food as they also use nearby dairy supply and create in house. The cheese is on the more expensive side compared to what you can get in the grocery store, but they had several different Vermont Cheddar flavors. They had samples out, and the smoked cheddar won us over. We also got some beef jerky to pair with it, and the cashier gave us a plate and bamboo knife to eat right outside at a picnic table. I would definitely recommend a metal knife in the situation to get through the wax covering, but the wax is nothing a little sawing can't break through. The cheese is fresh and creamy with that great layer of smoky flavor. It's an upscale cheese and very flavorful. If I was able to take more to go, I would love to try a lot more of the flavors. I'm not cheese expert, but if you want that authentic Vermont cheddar, it doesn't get more real and delicious than this.

Yelp
Just wanted to follow up on this. The owner emailed me an apology with intention to send cheese to sample but then never followed up or responded. I would encourage better customer service and communication

Yelp
Oh no... i went here with my husband and a small group of friends and the older woman working inside was downright mean. Not rude, not even a bit standoffish- just mean. I could tell each detail of how/why- but we can just say that no matter what question we asked, we were answered with snappiness, shortness, and even when my friends made purchases there was a problem with them wanting to do that, too. We left feeling disgruntled and we will never return. I don't recommend anyone visit.

Yelp
When you pull up to Plymouth Artisan Cheese, you'll first think that you stumbled on a movie set of an historic, abandoned town. But then you'll notice a small but steady stream of customers walking into one of the few buildings up a slight hill. And then you'll see the sign! We were welcomed with cheese! We got to taste eight types. My favorite was the truffle and herb. The store includes some accessories but mainly the best things that go with cheese: crackers, wine, and jams. We also learned a lot about the history of cheese making and the special, labor-intensive way Plymouth cheese has been made over the years. Definitely check out the small but interesting museum on the 2nd floor. No AT&T coverage here, but you'll find some pretty easily once you're on the major road again.

Yelp
Plymouth Artisan Cheese was the second stop on our adventures of the Vermont Cheese trail. It is so cool! It's located in a small town which just so happens to be on the property that belonged to our President, Calvin Coolidge! His old home is still there for you to explore and see exactly where he was sworn in as our president years ago. Now...onto the cheese. WOW this cheese is so good! You walk into the shop that is filled with local artisan products and souvenirs and of course, all the cheese you can dream of. This is the second oldest cheese factory in the US - it has been making artisan cheeses for over 125 years. THAT is commitment to the craft, let me tell you. To sample the cheeses, there is no cost. But I promise once you try the truffle cheddar, you will definitely snag a few of the beautiful, wax covered cheeses and want to take them home. They also had a delicious blue cheese being sampled. These cheeses are also raw milk - I really enjoyed the flavor. In addition to the general store that offers the sampling and other artisanal products and gifts - the property is really expansive and makes for a nice exploring pit stop. We picked up a local rosé cider, cheese, and continued on our way thru the Vermont Cheese Trail. Would definitely recommend a stop here for a taste of history!

Yelp
I will NEVER deal with this company again. I ordered cheese on Sept. 2, and after two phone calls, one of which was not responded to at all, I finally spoke with Linda, who said that the cheese would be shipped several days later. That didn't happen. After waiting several days after the expected shipping date, I finally called my credit card company, explained what happened, and requested the charge from this company be reversed, which was done. Several days after the charge was reversed, lo and behold I get a notification of the cheese being shipped. That's all it took - a couple of phone calls, waiting a bit over 2-1/2-weeks total until actual shipment - and then, only after reversing the charge - and "miraculously," THREE WEEKS AFTER I ORDERED, finally receiving the cheese on Sept. 23. The cheese itself was excellent, but totally NOT worth the hassle. And I did reverse the charge reversal, so Artisan will get paid for the cheese we FINALLY received.

Yelp
Always a great product. Highly recommended Cheddar and Henry's MKT in Bennington even carries the full Plymouth cheese line now. Awesome goodness!

Yelp
The cheese might be good but I wouldn't know because the store keeper was so rude I decided not to buy anything.
google avatar

Beth K.

Yelp
You can sample the cheeses before buying them. Purchased the "Hunter" aged two years sharp cheddar which definitely has a sharp bold intense flavor. I had intended to bring the cheese home and envisioned making macaroni and cheese. However, fast forward, my friend also loved the cheese so much she ate it on the drive back to Maryland. Buy more than 8 ounces of cheese.

Yelp
What a huge disappointment! We were really looking forward to stopping by this cheese shop on our trip to Vermont and drove 1.5 hours to get here during open hours, supposedly 10am - 5pm. We came through the door with my one and three year old only to be met with a woman yelling, "we're not open. You're not welcome!". Not welcome? That is so rude! Why not welcome? We were perplexed and closed the door. Then I looked again to see store hours to verify that we were during open hours and I went back in as I wanted to let the business know that online, it is listed that they're open but a guy came out saying he's on a call. I feel really said and disappointed with this experience. We were really looking forward to buying local cheeses and seeing the former president's stomping grounds. We quickly left with the sourest taste in our mouths.

Yelp
We visited Plymouth Cheese and bought several varieties for our lunch snack. Also added some prosciutto ham and crackers. One of the best cheese's I have ever had. Definitely worth a stop if your in the area. The walk of President Calvin Coolidge's home place, barns and seeing the artifacts on the property was very interesting.

Yelp
Really small cute creamery near the Coolidge historical site. Inside you're greeted by the sight of huge cheese vats as cheese is being made. It's pretty cool. When we visited, they had 8 different samples of the various cheeses they sell by the register. Every single cheese was delicious. The staff here is not pretentious in any way and you don't feel pressured into any purchases. Upstairs there is also a "museum" where you can find old school cheese vats, churns, etc. It's a nice little stop if you're into cheese. We stopped by here on the way home from our snowboarding trip!

James K.

Yelp
The cheese is of poor quality and overpriced. It tasted like the wax it was packed in.

Yelp
Plymouth Artisan Cheese purchased Frog City Cheese in 2008: (http://www.yelp.com/biz/frog-city-cheese-plymouth-notch#hrid:nsM5pyIeLwkOFTTSYlZH6Ah) Plymouth Cheese has been one of our favourite cheeses over the past 4 years. We tested the cheeses at the Billings Farm Cows & Camembert Weekend, and these are the current offerings: Original: similar to Frog City Mature & Young, a very good, medium cheddar that is excellent for melting and won't stink up the refrigerator too much East Meadow: similar to the Frog City Select; bold without being too sharp and stinky; perfect with apple pie or an "adult" grilled cheese served with tomato soup Hunter: same as the Frog City Hunter; stinky, bold, grassy, and not for the faint of heart Smoked: not available for testing at that time The location remains on the beautiful Coolidge homestead, with a friendly staff. Upgrades include having the cheeses enclosed in wax instead of in oddly shaped wedges that have been shrinkwrapped, or in small tubs.

Yelp
I am in town for the week and wanted to try a few different places for famous Vermont cheese. I called around 10AM today to see if I needed to pre order online and was told I could make curbside purchases. I was also told they are open until 4. I came to the shop around 1:30 and the door was locked but I could see someone inside. I knocked and called the number again but no one responded. Finally, I was able to make eye contact with the man inside and he just shook his head at me. I am leaving this review mainly because it didn't seem like the man in the shop was noticing me for the first time but rather had been ignoring me while I waited out in the cold hoping I would just leave. If he, or someone else, could have just come out to let us know they closed early it would have saved me time waiting out in the cold. I won't be returning.

Yelp
We were driving through with our camper and decided to stop here. It was tight but we made our camper fit. We went in with our twin toddlers. The women working the counter was very friendly. She had lots of samples out. She was kind enough to explain the different kinds to us. She even ran up stairs to see if they had a hunter cheese left. The cheese was delicious and well priced. We left with 3 bars. Definitely worth the visit!

Hev F.

Yelp
When we got there the manager said no cheese tastings today because they are too busy, and gave a lot of reasons and excuses that we were not interested in. Bottom line you are a cheese shop and we came to do a cheese tasting and buy some cheese. I expressed my disappointment and she said could get one together in 15 minutes. There was not much of a self guided tour but you could look in to the cheese making. Overall, not worth the drive or the argument, when you can do cheese tastings elsewhere. Cheeses were good though and we bought two.

Jane H.

Yelp
I read that this was an excellent cheese company but their delivery service was a total failure for me. I was charged 40 dollars for shipping and the package arrived a week later with no cooling materials to keep the cheese protected. I called and e mailed the company and got no acceptable response. I would never recommend ordering cheese from this company based on this very disappointing experience.

Yelp
I Arrived with the family for a cheese tasting after a long drive. There was no cheese on the tasting boards (it was clear there was supposed to be cheese there) and the unfriendly cashier provided no further information. We then Asked if our 2 year old could use the restroom, and were very rudely denied access to the facilities. Needless to say, we found another place to take our business.

Yelp
Plymouth Artisan Cheese is a very old cheese making facility that dates to the Calvin Coolidge family. They produce cheddar cheese in a very traditional way in small batches. They have two cheeses available, an aged "Original Plymouth" and a milder "East Meadow". While I was not able to obtain the aged cheese, I had tried it years earlier and still remember it for its excellent sharp flavor. We were able to try the mild, and appropriately named East Meadow cheddar which has strong hints of grass, specifically a sweet clover. While I am usually skeptical of any mild cheese, this one is among the best that I have ever tasted. Its flavors are vastly more complex than most and even though it is classified as mild, it still has some sharp tangy flavor. This cheese making facility may be among the best in all of Vermont, and is open to the public.
google avatar

Yelp
We recently received a spectacular gift box of six types of Plymouth cheese. Every variety was delicious. Our favorites were the rich, creamy mildness of Original Plymouth and the tangy, yet still subtle, Garlic Peppercorn. We have been sharing the bounty all week and every friend has been blown away by the amazing flavors. This was a perfect present. What a total delight!

Yelp
We were touring Vermont this weekend. Both Yelp and the website state the business as being open until 5. We arrived a few minutes after 4 and found the door locked. Signs leading up to the business indicated they were open and offering samples. We never even got to go inside. This was frustrating since we had pushed up our whole schedule for the day to make it here on time. There was also a car in the driveway, so I know someone was there and could have let us in anyway.

Yelp
LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!! $11 for a block is pricey but it is great cheese. My favorite was the original, the spicy one is SPICY. I was so glad I bought three blocks before I left. They also have good local beer including some beer that was not available at other beer stores in the area. Lots of local crafts as well. Friendly staff and little museum on the top level that is sparse but has some good information. Free to come here.
google avatar

Ryan G.

Yelp
I love this place- you can't tell that they were bought out though. They are so nice, they teach you about the cheese-making process, and give you delicious samples!
google avatar

Brian G.

Yelp
I went towards the end of the day deep I guess I should have expected less. The museum upstairs was okay but nobody was their too talk to you. You did get to see the equipment they use. The store is over priced for the beer and make syrup. I ended up not buying cheese because the few samples they had must have gone back. My girlfriend and I did not like any of them. Maybe if you visit earlier in the day you will have a better experience.
google avatar

Steven H.

Yelp
Great cheese in a bucolic, historic setting, right in the midst of the Coolidge Presidential site in Plymouth Notch. Staff are extremely knowledgable and the cheeses are uniformly delicious, so come with your cooler. There's a small but interesting exhibit and museum on cheesemaking upstairs, and the store offers a variety of other Vermont products, including a small selection of Vermont hard ciders, ice wine ciders and brews.

Yelp
It breaks my heart that I can't get Plymouth Cheese more often! They are the best place for reasonably priced curds, which many locals know is the hardest ingredient to find for making poutine at home (if you are not from northern New England that whole sentence probably made no sense. Look it up, and then get to Canada). They have samples of all their cheeses readily available and you will have a difficult time choosing what to take home. But, as crowd-pleasers go, you can't go wrong with Gracie's Choice, which disappeared in my home alarmingly fast. They also have a better than average selection of other local food stuffs that pair well with cheese. Good beer & wine selection, too. Well worth the ride up the mountain. This building is one small part of the Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site, but arguably the best part.

Daniel B.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I went to Plymouth cheese company in January and had a great time. Their cheese is delicious, especially their smoked variety. The people are really friendly and knowledgeable, even stayed open a a little while past their normal closing so we could get there. They also sell some other nice products from around the area. Strongly recommended!
