Super fantastic sandwiches. Worth going out of your way for. The Good: Wide variety of sandwiches which are quite tasty. Love the staff, prompt and friendly. The Meh: The have sit down and take out, but you won't stay for the atmosphere or anything. Kind of average / small parking lot. Prices are above average. The Bad: None.

Enjoying a New Orleans Louisiana taste here in Portland. The Peacemaker is a must have and the fried onions rings are huge portion of onion! That's what I like!!!

Quick service, great employees, clean store and the food...worth the drive from Bangor. Ordered the peacemaker and the fried seafood was on point! Everything tastes fresh and delicious!

Absolutely delicious sandwiches! I had the Atomic Pig which I enjoyed quite a bit. I do wish they had more options for adding heat, even with the extra jalapenos and the Louisiana sauce at the table, I had tastebuds yet to burn by the time I'd finished the sandwich. Absolutely delicious though! Highly recommend the fried pickles, too.

I arrived at the shop before 7:00 it took 43min. To make 1 poboy and gravy fries. I live 2.1mi.away, about 4min. Stone cold. They used to be better than what I got. Certainly better than what I threw away. Another post pandemic failure. Thanks for your reply, but you can't eat a good review any more than limp lettuce, cold fries and glutinous gravy.

First time ever ordering from Po Boys because I'm never in this area. But I've got to say, the food is pretty damn good! I ordered the BLT and even though it's a super simple sandwich it was delicious! Definitely will be ordering with you guys again when I'm down in the area again!

I got the atomic patty melt and holy cow it was tasty! The mix of sweet bacon jam and spicy jalapeños was perfection. The staff was very friendly and the atmosphere was really nice especially for an ordering at the counter place.

Been coming here occasionally for years, always got the Reuben which is the best one I've had in Maine, but tonight I tried the cheeseburger po'boy and it was fantastic. This is definitely one of my favorite restaurants in the Portland area. Thank you so much for being awesome!

Yelp
A little sub shop with a big difference. You're greeted with a a smile. I ordered up the oyster po boy... Everything was fast delivered to my table with a smile. The rolls were so fresh. The oysters cooked perfectly. A little lettuce and tomato. I loved my sandwich. It was $16 for a full size sub oyster Po boy... Just what I wanted in and out quickly. It may not look like much but the service was great. The people were nice and the food was delicious... The pickles were great too!!

Yelp
We just missed Fat Tuesday and I was thinking of a Po'Boy sandwich. This place offers authentic New Orleans Cajun food. The staff are always very friendly to both new and regular customers. The food is always on point. The blackened fish po' boy is a full sandwich which is big enough to share. It has Cajun coleslaw which adds a crunchy and flavorful component to the sandwich and comes with tomato and red pepper mayo as well. We ordered sweet potato fries which were so good. They came out hot and delicious. The manager mentioned that they have the traditional bread for Po'boys in New Orleans shipped to them from Leidenheimer Bakery which is why their sandwiches come out crispy, flaky and soooo good. This is a French bread made with less water which creates a flaky crust that is not too chewy. It doesn't matter which item you choose here. It is always delicious.

Yelp
I stopped on Saturday eve 7/19/2025, picked up a "pulled pork sandwich" well let's just call it what it was before it entered the trash. It was a Cole slaw sandwich, not even good Cole slaw, way too much mayo. This sandwich had zero flavor. You could dupe this at home, just take a hoagie roll slice it and add a ton of cole slaw, a few pieces of poorly seasoned pulled pork and maybe a quarter of a tsp of barbecue sauce. If you do that you can save yourself $14. I called and spoke to Chris, I guess he was the owner. I requested a refund. It was like talking to a child. He stated he was insulted by my Google review because I mentioned how good the food was there when Pete, the previous owner was in charge. Not only was I denied a refund for this $14 Cole slaw sandwich but this whiney man child hung up on me. I do not recommend this place. I will never go back. Save your money and just know if you are as disappointed as we were with this sandwich you are quite literally just throwing your money into the trash.

Yelp
As someone who could care less about cajun food, or po' boys for that matter, I loved what I got from Po' Boys and Pickles (takeout only). I ordered the cajun fries (perfectly seasoned, not overdone, crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside), cauliflower bites (good but not my favorite--still love that they have options for vegetarians, came with an aioli), and the Thai Iced Tea Milkshake. Although I'm hellbent on trying more from them at some point, the true star of the show was the milkshake. It was creamy and delish, and I loved the unique flavor that I can't find anywhere else. They also offered a key lime pie and mexican hot chocolate shake, which I'm eager to try as well! My one complaint is that I was hoping to order some fried pickles with ranch (a classic combo), but they no longer have them available on their menu. For a place with 'pickles' in the name, I was disappointed, but I'll live (I guess). Can't wait to try them again!

Yelp
Guy at the front counter was awesome! food was good, i got the special, mac and cheese, pulled pork, on a loaf. food was great!

Yelp
Ordered the cauli po' boy for takeout. When I went to pick it up the restaurant looked very inviting and had some seating. Service was friendly and prompt. Po' boy was delicious! The cauliflower was fried to perfection in a flavorful, salty batter, the cucumbers added some nice crunch and freshness, and the pickled onions and garlic mayo were tasty too. A great vegetarian-friendly option!

Yelp
Excellent sandwiches to go or dine in. The last few times I've been there was for takeout and the food was prepared and ready to go very quickly and everything was packaged well. We had a Muffuletta Po'Boy, cheeseburger Po'Boy, BBQ Beef sandwich, and an order of chili cheese fries. Every item was delicious. I really enjoyed the Muffuletta and the vegetable relish that they use which adds great flavor to the high quality meats and cheese. The BBQ Beef is a messy eat but so worth it. Incredibly tasty with a really generous portion of beef. And, surprisingly, the cheeseburger was awesome, right up there with the best burgers I've had locally. Lastly, the chili cheese fries. So much food and very tasty. These are better eaten while dining in as they don't really travel well and the fries get soggy. Dining in, they are great but best shared or ordered as your main course. And don't be looking for health food if you order these. The weight alone of one order can be daunting. I've had different seafood Po'Boys here in the past and I've never been disappointed. Po'Boys & Pickles is a small local gem that you need to try if you haven't yet!

Yelp
Drove by this place that looked like an institution and wanted to try their po boys, and pickles! Ordered: fried pickles: cut lengthwise and were so cute, clearly not from gargantuan pickles that made it easy to dip and eat. Sweet and tangy! peacemaker: fried oysters and shrimp with mayo, tomatoes and lettuce, very simple sandwich that was easy to devour sticky toffee pudding cake: small slightly warmed cake slice with notes of cinnamon and the holidays, not too sweet or too decadent Overall, this place has some of the best dredge/fry I've had that makes the food crispy without being greasy. Great execution of simple, fresh food.

Yelp
Portland, Maine's best sandwich/wrap shop of 2023, Po' Boys & Pickles is the real deal! The authentic Creole New Orleans' flavors are on point. Counter service was fast and friendly. The Blackened fish sandwich($15) is not to be missed! The sandwich is dressed with Cajun Cole slaw, sliced tomato and red pepper mayo. This is a huge sandwich, easily shareable and absolutely delicious!! The bread is from Leidenheimer Bakery, New Orleans. Founded in 1896, Leidenheimer's is the last of the old-school Po' boy bakeries. Po' Boys & Pickles has made the commitment to using the best bread and most authentic ingredients in all of their Po' boys and sandwiches. Truly an homage to New Orleans!! You can taste the goodness in every bite. The perfect accompaniment was a basket of sweet potato fries($6). The fries were perfectly crisp, not greasy, plentiful and delicious. Great quality, inexpensive dining experience!! I love this place and you will too! Highly recommend!!

Yelp
This place is SO GOOD. Seriously, don't trust all those 3 stars. Stick to the classics and you'll be good to go. For starters, if you get any po boy that has seafood - oysters, shrimp, etc - the first thing you'll notice will be that the dredge is exceptional. It's thin and it's crispy and it's sooo good. Those perfect little nuggets are delicious on that roll with the lettuce and tomato and tasty tasty sauce. I recommend the Peacemaker, it's just a perfect Po'Boy. We also had the Muffaletta salad which was wonderful and makes me very much want to try the sandwich version. And of course I'd be wrong not to mention the wings. They are big and crispy and juicy! Again, they nail whatever rub they pretreat those wings with, and the Voodoo sauce is sweet/spicy perfection. The gentleman that took our order was sweet and patient with us. We sat out on the patio to enjoy the nice weather, but the dining room seems like a fun option as well. We will back many many times and I will update with photos at that point. In the meantime, just go support this awesome local spot and get yourself some of the best dang po' boys north of NOLA!

Yelp
Ordered on Carhop as takeout since I had a coupon. It was easy to navigate and order from, even though the business does have their own website you can order directly from as well. I believe it is a couple of dollars cheaper that way. When I went in, the staff was a little confused since they didn't realize you could do takeout instead of delivery. Had small talk and answered some of their questions about it. Food was ready for me to grab and go after figuring out what was going on. Haha. They have their own parking lot, so easy to run in and out. The Angry Bird sandwich was soooooo good. It is a little messy and greasy, but it's worth it. The macaroon was soft, chewy, and sweet. It's definitely my new favorite and first time here in a long time. Forgot how good they were!

Yelp
Bro....i cried twice this vacation. When I saw Fenway park and after I ate the muffuletta sandwich.. so dang good!!! I hate coconut and had the cookies and goodness they were heavenly!

Yelp
This is the second time I've had the Dirty Bird sandwich and both times I was underwhelmed. The roasted chicken is dry and tough. For the sandwich and Cajun fries it was $18. The fries are good, but not a huge portion and the full meal was not worth it when I have to add my own condiments later. Maybe they have better options that are less bland, but I don't want to waste my money to find out when I could choose just something tasty elsewhere.

Yelp
Love their Blackened Fish Sandwich with extra Creole Mayo so good always a go to place when I'm in the area.

Yelp
An absolutely OG go to sandwich shop in Portland. The bread is SO fresh and is authentically creole (it comes directly from New Orleans!), the ingredients they use are fresh and well seasoned, and gotta love that crystal hot sauce. Of course all the various po' boys are fantastic, but a sneaky favorite of mine is the chicken sandwich. It's very basic- roasted chicken, shredded lettuce, tomato, bacon, and Mayo, but paired with their special bread and it just SMACKS. It's probably the freshly roasted chicken. The trick is to add pickles and crystal hot sauce to the sandwich. I'm drooling g just thinking about it. As part of the Portland Food Fight best burger challenge we tried the patty melt and I gotta say that was pretty good too. Not something I would order regularly as it is very heavy/rich but all the flavors were on point.

Yelp
Stopped by Po Boys and Pickles for a quick supper and we were very impressed by the Service and food ! We got the red beans that to our surprise had roast beef in it ! We also tried the poor boy that had roast beef peppers and onions and the most delicious Creole mustard which was the highlight of the sandwich! We would diffidently go back next time we are near Portland !

Yelp
Looking for a local eatery for a quick bite during our travels, we passed by this establishment and decided to eat here. Order at counter and brought out. Ordered fried pickles:ok Fries: acceptable Cajun coleslaw: bland and unflavorful. Not a fan. Even after taking away and putting on other sandwiches. I make a way better slaw. Cheeseburger Po boy: good Atomic Patty Melt: ordering person said this was his fave--- thought no jalapenos requested...but they were in sandwich. Bacon jam scarce. Cheeseburger Po boy: good Macaroons: standard. The counter person was pushing these. While I am coconut fan, my dining partner not. Told this would sway anyone who claimed to not like coconut. Not true. I love coconut and enjoy macaroons; these were not exceptional and were in my opinion too sweet. Nothing special. All in all an ok meal, but prices a bit high. We ate outside, but tabletops needed a scrub down or at the very least a wipe down. Inside tables and floors definitely needed a scrub down. Restrooms too. Not the cleanest place and not the greatest food, buy locals seem to love.

Yelp
You won't regret ordering any of the po' boys. Here's a few of my favs: - golden fried shrimp - creole sausage - atomic patty melt The Cajun fries are also amazing, as is the falafel salad.

Yelp
Ordered the Muffuletta Po Boy, fried oyster basket & some pickled veggies today all were absolutely delicious! Perfect sized & crispy fries with spot on oyster goodness! Loved every bit of it. Clean restaurant & nice, friendly service! Definitely coming back soon to try something else! Love it here!

Yelp
Came by to grab takeout dinner. We ordered a blackened fish po boy, shrimp po boy, half Cajun and half jerk chicken wings, and a jalapeño lemonade. We drove 20 min back to the hotel and the wings held up really well. It was still nice and crispy when we got back into our room. It was hard to differentiate the wings as they both looked the same and tasted similar. However we were able to pick out some wings to be sweeter than others so we assumed those were the honey Cajun. The wings were served with bleu cheese and it was nice to actually have cheese bits inside the sauce. The shrimp poboy wasn't crispy anymore but it was still pretty good. The blackened fish was also pretty good after the drive. The fish is a bit on the more salter side. Both were on a long sub and it would've been nice if it was more toasted(although it may not have lasted the drive). Each order also came with some pickles on the side which really added extra flavor to the sub. The jalapeño lemonade was definitely an interesting choice. The jalapeños definitely will hit you when you drink it and it reminds me of Mexican candy like the spicy mango chili. Will come again when I'm in the area.

Yelp
I'm glad a place like this exists in Portland. Kind of grungy, not necessarily the cadillac of sandwiches, but really satisfying and filling sandwiches for you on that day when you just want something to fill your gut. The po-boys are a reasonable facsimile to the ones down in New Orleans, but not quite there. Still, there are a variety of sandwiches to choose from and most of the ones I have had were pretty good. There's a deli that's much closer to me in East Deering, but once in a while I will skip that place in favor of this place. Think of it as a slightly more blue-collar sort of dive than a posh delicatessen. They delivered (via 2dinein) to the hospital when I was recovering from surgery! It need not be mentioned really, but chowing down one of their sandwiches instead of hospital food was a godsend.
google avatar

Shirley F.

Yelp
This place was alright. I got the chicken sandwich and was not expecting it to be cold. It wasn't very flavorful, sadly. The sweet potato fries were pretty good. The ambiance was alright. There was good seating though. The service was okay too.
google avatar

Vincent J.

Yelp
The gumbo and jerk wings were good. Roast beef sandwich was bland and shrimp sandwich was okay
google avatar

Marc L.

Yelp
We both liked our Po boys Small sandwiches are big. The oyster Po boy however was skimpy on the oysters & the bread did not hold up while eating. The other Po boy was a chicken cutlet with was full of chicken & good Fried pickles were excellent, great macaroons. The backside however shocked me when the cooks didn't use gloves, hair nets & beard nets. Lots of cross contamination going on as in register to hands in food.

Charles G.

Yelp
Great place. I live in New Orleans, but come here every summer. Sandwiches are absolutely the way they should be. I don't know if they fly in Lidenheimer's bread, but it is delicious!

Peter F.

Yelp
I lived in New Orleans for 4 years in the 80s and ate a lot of Po Boys ate the best places in town. Since leaving I have occasionally tried places that offer a Po Boy on the menu in hopes of getting something similar to the real deal only to be disappointed every time...until I found this place. Po Boys & Pickles is the real deal. I am an oyster po boy devote, but I think I've had everything on their menu and it hassles all excellent. It's a sandwich shop Devore so don't expect anything fancy, but it is clean And the food is what it's all about!
google avatar

Zaávon E.

Yelp
Honestly, the food was OK in my opinion. My sandwich was over cooked, but the fried pickles were delicious. The location was quant, service was cool. The experience was not bad, the cooks just need to pull the chicken out a little earlier next time.

E M.

Yelp
Best alternative to "fast food" in Portland. Satisfies the craving without the guilt and 3 times the quality. And the gumbo is delicious!
google avatar

Frank B.

Yelp
Terrific sandwiches. I have been here many times and have never had anything but delicious sandwiches. They are messy but scrumptious. The blacken fish sandwich is mildly hot and is my favorite. The muffiato ingredients are top notch. Make sure to try the voodoo chips.

Rachelle L.

Yelp
They have one of our favorite sandwiches, the atomic patty melt!!! So good! Fries are good too but small portion sizes.
google avatar

Robin W.

Yelp
What a find! I was a bit worried because the menu is so extensive but everything we tried was fresh and good. Oyster zoo Boy for him and Angry Pig for me - brilliant idea to have pulled pork on jalapeño cornbread! We took home a quart of gumbo and some macaroons even though I'm so full I can't imagine eating again. [update: the macaroons were fantastic!]
google avatar

Tyler L.

Yelp
It was decent. Cant say much about the po' boys. It's a hit or miss and for me sadly, it's closer to the 'miss' side. But worth the try. Peacemaker-- alright. If I did come back I wouldn't get it with the oysters, just the shrimp. Then again, I'm not into oysters, it was my first time trying it. So my opinion may not be that valid. I'm not a oyster connoisseur. But, never again for me. Fried pickles -- excellent, now THOSE are worth coming back for. I'm used to having the small circular ones, NO-- these are huge and still retained that pickled flavor. Customer service was good, ambiance was cool. Nothing bad to say about the experience. Just not worth the hype for me.
google avatar

Maria A.

Yelp
Food here is fantastic. They are always busy. I don't know how but they have, it seems, some amazing loyal workers. Great work. Angry Pig sandwich is my favorite, pulled pork, cheese, jalapeños. Nothing better!

Kimberly S.

Yelp
Someplace different and definitely worth a try. I've never gotten anything I didn't like.
google avatar

Brad H.

Yelp
Wow!! I've ate wings all over the US and these were as good as any I've ever had. Also had the red beans and it's very nice to get a bit of flavor from back home so far north. The employees were super friendly and approachable. Great job.

Marie O.

Yelp
a nice little spot! A bit hard to get to but definitely worth the visit, get the iced Thai tea!

Jennifer K.

Yelp
So good! The Angry Pig sandwich is heavenly. I would highly recommend this place if you're in Portland.

Yelp
So I've been a big fan of PB&P since before I moved to Portland in 2017. They've been my pop-in spot on Forest Ave ever since- for a while there I couldn't drive by without buying their Angry Pig (absolutely delightful), but come 2020, like a lot of businesses, Po' Boys stopped servicing the Po'. It wasn't like they were super cheap to begin with, but their prices have not-so-subtly increased over the last three years. That's fine, I totally understand that in this economy, but that doesn't at all excuse the decrease in portions. They've reduced the size of their po' boys by at least 30%- which is absolutely wack considering the pricing now. I tried y'all for the last time yesterday- I missed the flavor of your blackened haddock and the experience was so disappointing, we didn't even finish your food. So basically, with the additional reduction of the sandwiches, I ended up paying like 17$ for half of a crappy po' boy. At least your macaroons are still fire. Don't call me, don't text me, we are through.
google avatar

Kimberly W.

Yelp
The food is always great. Highly recommend the Cajun fish nuggets , fried pickles, atomic patty melt, and golden oyster po boy. They do struggle with consistency in customer service and keg taps. Half the time I can't get a beer or cider with my food. Huge disappointment since they have shipyard logos everywhere. The cashier seems like we are bothering him by giving our order. I get it, everyone is tired and has off days, but that has been pretty consistent each time we've been there and tbh kinda turned me off the place for a while . Ambiance is very nice with an awesome playlist.

Gerald M.

Yelp
Love the peacemaker sandwich- a great seafood option that is characteristic of the po' boys southern influences.

Yelp
Updated review: I have no idea what's going on with this place, but it's really gone downhill. We ordered on the phone to pick up, and the person was really rude. Rushing through it and hung up on us before we finished giving our order. We thought maybe they're new, no problem. We were told 25-30 minutes, and got there 30 minutes later, only to wait another 20 minutes. And then the same issue with just being really rude. They looked mad and upset and just miserable. Then when we got the food home, it was pretty bad. Really, really soggy and falling apart. And it was somehow cold. We waited for them to finish the order, and somehow it was still cold in the center. As with all of my other reviews, we can be quite understanding with food or an off night, but customer service is #1 no matter what. And it was really, really bad customer service. As of now, I cannot recommend this establishment.

Mario M.

Yelp
Po Boys and Pickles is one of our "Go to" places. Always consistently good, haven't tried a lot of items on the menu since I'm pretty much stuck on the Oyster Po Boy but everything they put out looks good. It brings a little bit of NOLA flavor up to Portland Maine
google avatar

Kim L.

Yelp
Always good, basic and yummy. Today was a muffuletta poor boy and a chicken cutlet poor boy and of course fried pickles and cold beer!
google avatar

E H.

Yelp
Po Boys used to be a regular stop for us until they changed their falafel salad, which is the only thing my vegetarian wife will eat. We tried them again hoping it had improved, but nope! Instead of serving the standard falafel ball, Po Boys serves falafel strips, which are roughly equal to maybe two balls. They used to serve it with four balls. They're chickpeas, for heavens sake. Sebago has the same salad with four balls. Guess we're going there.
google avatar

Kyle A.

Yelp
I'm not huge into Cajun food but my partner was really feeling it tonight, so we took a trip to Po' Boys. Really excellent food! A small issue with our order that was immediately clearer up by the manager with refund immediately given. (If you've read any of my reviews in the past, I'm always more impressed by well recovered mistakes than perfect service). The BBQ on my BBQ beef was absolutely fantastic! Sweet but not saccharine. My partner's muffaletta was exactly what he was wanting! My only complaint is that the building is a little run down looking. It looks like it was set up when they opened but haven't done fresh better or a real remodel since.
google avatar

Pamela L.

Yelp
Amazing! We had the fish nuggets, Debris Po' Boy, and Donut Holes. Everything was cooked to order, fresh and hot. The fish nuggets were crispy, nicely, but not overly, spiced. The spice was warm, not too hot, and allowed the fish to still be the star. Fries were perfect-hand cut and hot. The Po' Boy was stellar-moist, meaty, and the bread chewy and crusty as it should be. The donut holes are not to be missed-crusty and dense-the chocolate sauce bittersweet and rich. The hubby, who had the gall to ask " We are eating Cajun in Portland Maine?" was pleasantly surprised. We will most definitely be back to explore the menu-the mufaletta looked amazing.
google avatar

Nic S.

Yelp
Called in an order tonight for my first visit. Probably not adding to my rotation. We ordered the blackened fish po' boy and the pesto chicken po' boy. I should have walked out when I saw the cashier take cash from a customer, then turn around and wrap the same customer's sandwich. No washing of hands, no gloving up to guard against Covid, just touched money then the food. He wrapped our sandwiches after using the cash register and didn't wash his hands either. I was so hungry, I didn't care. On a whim, I ordered a macaroon, and it was so good we devoured it in the car before leaving the parking lot. The sandwiches, not so much. The pesto chicken was missing the cheese and the peppers and tasted tough and woody. There was so much lettuce on the sandwich that we pulled off enough to make a side salad. The blackened fish was just "meh" and sloppy. Not what I expected from the reviews nor is it something I want again. I really am sorry.

Yelp
This place is still winning. Mmmmm :) Every time I get that itch, I resolve it with a sandwich from Po'Boys. I need to pay a visit very soon.
