"Located near the top of Rivers Avenue, across the street from Walmart, this Mexican restaurant serves both traditional items and updated versions of conventional dishes. Try the nachos del mar — the plate is topped with grilled shrimp, scallops, bell peppers, and the signature cheese sauce — everything you didn’t know you needed on nachos until just now." - KJ Kearney

Google
This was a great place to stop in and eat at. The menu was so vast is was hard to pick just one thing. The enchiladas were really good, one being cheese filled was a first for me. Whenever I go to a Mexican restaurant I have to try the desert and this fried ice-cream didn't disappoint, a new first with it not being vanilla. The service was timely and the restaurant was clean.

Google
It’s really very good to have nice Mexican restaurant like this they have very good guacamole i loved the way they served it service is very good i work in Indian restaurant next door its very good decent restaurant i love their food

Google
The food was great! I had the Texas dip which was packed full of flavor. The white cheese was a little thin for my liking. However the enchilada de mole'le was perfection 👌. The taco Supreme was one of the best tacos I've ever eaten. Im definitely coming back.

Google
Great find in the heart of North Charleston! Unexpected need to eat brought us here, amazing place, food and drinks! Priced right and delicious. Stop by if you can to enjoy some great Mexican cuisine.

Google
Came in on a Tuesday night and was seated right away. The service was great. My dinner was really good. I had to try one of there tocos and it was good nothing special about it. The food did come out quick. The atmosphere is what you would expect from a Mexican restaurant. The salsa with the chips were pretty good too.

Google
I was in N.Charleston doing some errands, and of course hunger struck. As it happened Poblanos was right in front of me.I had cheese/bean dip and 2 burritos to go.What a plesant surprise! there was a good amt of food and a good serving of dip.Last time I got some from my usual place,it was very much watered down, not here though! Everything was delicious!

Alysha Hooton

Google
Food was better than I anticipated. Tried something new and LOVED it. Gave the atmosphere 4 stars ONLY because, if you sit outside, you are right beside the main road (Rivers Ave and Ashley Phosphate connection light), and traffic is not quiet in that location. Otherwise, the visit overall would be 5 stars across the board.

Google
Stopped at this restaurant for lunch in SC on my way to FL from TN. Wasn’t packed and Service was really on point. There is outdoor seating as well. Got to our seat and our waiter took our drink order and brought chips and salsa to our table. Salsa is spicy but I love spice. Food was really delicious and plentiful. Spent a total of $50 for feeding 2 adults and 2 kids and still had amazing portion size left over for each of us.

Yelp
Poblanos is a very good Mexican restaurant. The food is solid! I enjoyed the fajitas, however, I'd suggest just getting the chicken and steak. The shrimp tasted a bit rubbery. The service was fantastic and the happy hour is such a vibe. The servers are very attentive. I enjoyed the margarona and left very full and satisfied! If you're in the area and want a good margarita, I'd consider stopping by!

Rowan R.

Yelp
The food here is absolutely amazing!! I absolutely love their tacos and chicken nachos! They have so many good options. Staff is amazing and the restaurant is maintained well. The restaurant is very nice and wheelchair accessible!

Mary S.

Yelp
Went here with a friend for a late lunch, which was nice and quiet, service was good, ambiance was nice. Had the chicken chimichanga which could have been a little crispier, but was very yummy. Was enough food for 2 lunches for me. Would go back if it was closer to where I live. Prices were reasonable.

Kyle M.

Yelp
Surprisingly overall pretty solid. I thought the steak fajitas burrito was pretty good. I honestly didn't expect too much out of this place based on the low reviews, but yeah the burrito tasted really good and was extremely filling. I could barely finish it. The chips and salsa were pretty good too. I ordered a margarita and the serving size seemed huge. It tasted pretty good. Our waiter was friendly and took his job seriously. The service in general was fast. The ambiance was okay.

Yelp
We love Poblanos, for this style of Mexican food, we've been going for 11 years now. This weekend we finally went, after 18 months of not eating in restaurants and a bit has changed. Both the menu and the space is brightened up and updated. They are currently running a poma passion fruit margarita, fresh in-house made, and it was sooooo delicious. We enjoy the carnitas and always get an order to-go with some fresh tortillas. It makes a great Sunday breakfast taco with the rice and beans!

Rachel G.

Yelp
Why don't they advertise their prices of the margaritas on the menu? Because they start at $15. That's why. Decent service. Decent chips and salsa.

Liz H.

Yelp
Service was slow and the staff meh at best. Now let's talk about the food. No real flavor to the chicken chimichangas and the rice was weird. World's smallest basket of chips. Least satisfying Mexican food I've ever had. The AC was set to roast. Not sure why it's popular.

Ari M.

Yelp
Mexican cuisine on the strip of Rivers avenue ive wanted to try for a while. Asked whats the best and was recommended steak Vallarta 18$. 24 oz Dos XX Negra and traditional chips and salsa. So far so good. Good music and ambiance. And of course football on every TV. Geroldo the waiter was awesome. Oh man was this good. Steak not over cooked and very tasty. Good basic Mexican rice side salad and shrimp onion and well cooked steak. What more can you ask for. This place is worth traveling to find.

Abby L.

Yelp
Overall experience and food was pretty good! Our waiter was friendly and our food came out to the table quickly. The Quesabirria Tacos were stuffed full, and the beef was flavorful and tender. The consommé was also delicious. The ambiance was okay, the AC did not seem to be working. But the menu has many options and I will be coming back to try more!

Roxan I.

Yelp
At first, the menus books were so nasty ! And they excuse was "They didn't cleaned them Last night" (we should run) The food doesn't have flavor or seasoning... The "stake" looks like ground beef The milanesa de pollo isn't golden and doesn't have not seasoning AT ALL ! I'll never never comeback This restaurant gave a bad name to a Mexican food Shame !

Mark S.

Yelp
Absolute terrible service. Always been slow, but now they hide, play on their phones and seemingly avoid customers. Missed orders. Have to go find someone to even get the check. Steak was 50% fast and gristle.

Chantelle B.

Yelp
We enjoyed ourselves! The TVs played the games, social distancing is still enforced, and service was very attentive. The seafood quesadilla comes with so much seafood! The Texas rice is a huge pile of rice with so many great flavors. Our punch was a little watered down which did impact the flavor somewhat. When you check in on Yelp you also get a free side of queso or guac!

Bob M.

Yelp
Large portions, flavorful, and great staff, all are well represented here. If your like me I hate reading, I know mexican Im from texas, Calif or New Mexico. Well reality they also have crappy places. My mom owned a Mexican cafe, i grew up in 3 of her places, Im no expert I just know what I like. This is one of my major liked.

Elle S.

Yelp
absolutely awesome!!! SO MANY OPTIONS, for food and drink, guacamole station, great service, beautiful plants... when my boyfriend and i went today, someone was outside hanging beautiful colored lights outside as well. great atmosphere! i got SO MUCH FOOD, i was able to fill up my tummy and still come home with SO MUCH! pics are of the carne asada plate can't wait to come back and try their vegetarian options as well, the mushrooms, zucchini and broccoli looked absolutely incredible. just the smell alone made me VERH happy as soon as we walked in!! YUM!!!!

Nino P.

Yelp
I realized coming from California and moving to the South 9 times out of 10 the Mexican food disappoints. We ordered the Burrito California and to be honest, no where in California would you find a burrito like this. Burrito California: - oily - way too much cheese smothered on it - burrito was wrapped horribly - rice oily AF - rice I don't waste food but this is going straight to the trash. If you are looking for authentic Mexican I would take Taco Bell over this mierda.

Frankye J.

Yelp
The place is very clean. The Mgr worked the front lobby area and was very fast paced and expected the customers ordering to be fast paced as well. The food was okay despite the "hurry up and order" mood. I will just stick with my favorite Mexican Restaurant West Ashley where the Staff is very friendly and fast paced as well.

Karis M.

Yelp
The drink was good I came in about 40 minutes til closing. I ordered street corn it was kinda bitter like rushed no flavor. But I understand he say when their slow they close 20mins early.

Zac A.

Yelp
Very good, but prices are misrepresented on the website. Expect to pay 30% more than you would assume based on website prices.

Jill W.

Yelp
This place is definitely our go to Mexican restaurant. Drink orders are taken quickly and the chips and salsa arrive right after. The a la carte tacos are filling and come w all the fixings, meat, cheese, lettuce. We also sit at the bar and the bartenders are on top of it but never push you to order. They let you hang out and relax if that's what you want. Although we've never sat at a tables I'm sure the waitstaff is just as good. I highly recommend coming here.

Barbara J.

Yelp
Food was awful, caused stomach pains the next day. Ordered the taco shell with shrimp and chicken.

Steven B.

Yelp
Friendly staff. The food was not that good. Love the Guacamole spread as a appetizer but all of the food was disappointing

Evan G.

Yelp
Poblanos Mexican Restaurant on Rivers Avenue in North Charleston is one of the best options for Mexican food in the Charleston area. Everything that I have tried on the menu has been flavorful and very delicious and I have enjoyed every visit I have made here so far. The vibe and atmosphere of this place is very relaxed and positive and it is a good place to come to after a long day of work. The staff here is amazing and works hard to make sure that you have a dining experience here and that you have everything that you need.

Anna F.

Yelp
The service was great! Very polite waiter and didn't have to wait long to be seated or wait for our food..

Shawn A.

Yelp
We had a wonderful server! The food was average and the ambiance was natural, nothing to exciting or bore. My only issue was the dessert molten cake, they serve it on a steamed skillet. I dont think they know that chocolate is cooked at certain temperatures and what I received was burnt. The entrees were bland as well, not enough flavor but I will definitely come back to try it out again.

Veonn E.

Yelp
Well, it was good. I rarely give a 5 star because I feel like a lot of people give undeserved 5 stars. It takes a pretty perfect experience for me to give a 5 star. I'd love to give it a 4 star, but I can't. If you are looking for very good authentic Mexican food this isn't it. Our waitress rolled her eyes when she came to check on us and we asked for more water. She didn't like answering questions I had about different items and wouldn't ask the kitchen for the answer. We had to ask another waiter for our check and boxes because she never came back. He was very friendly. Like I said, the food is good just not overwhelming. The quantity of food for the price is good. Quality over quantity is appreciated though. I'm not saying don't go there if you like Mexican food, just not if you want great, authentic food.

Jason B.

Yelp
2.5 stars... The whole gang stopped in as we heard about fajitas in a pineapple. I got the complimentary chips and salsa which was good. I also got a free queso for checking in(thanks Yelp!) and it was tasty. I judge a Mexican joint by its carnitas, and these were pretty standard. Good flavor and average moisture. It was served with beans and rice as well as the standard guac/sour cream/pico platter, and fresh corn tortillas. I'm a tourist so this joint would only stand out if it knocked my socks off, which did not happen. It was good, but this place does not make the list. Ambiance is Strip mall fajita house, and prices are in line with expectation.

Gary A.

Yelp
The food was amazing. Authentic tastes with the right amount of spices. Wasn't too thrilled that they charged me for spicier salsa but oh well. My wife and I travel extensively in our Motorhome and we are staying in Charleston for four days. Got a hunkering for me I am good and found Poblanos. Claudio was our waiter and he's a no nonsense type of guy with out saying much. In other words, he doesn't display a warm and welcoming personality. But wow was he sharp. He didn't use a tablet or notepad to take our orders. He was very efficient. I had chori Changa and a chorizo taco. Yummy. The best I've had since we traveled through Texas. My wife had poblano with stuffed cheese, a beef taco and cheese enchiladas. Amazing flavor in all.

Shane S.

Yelp
This is our go to Mexican restaurant. You can get a good meal or order a little bit off their ala cart menu. Drafts are always served in a cold mug, and the itself is always cold.

Alexandra R.

Yelp
So I recently visited, and this visit was by far the worst one yet. We were seated in a dark corner, the lights above us burned out. While it may seem romantic, it was a cold and rainy day, so it added to the gloom. Our food, well that was also disappointing. The salsa was extremely hot, I think someone put a little much spicy peppers into the mix. The Texas fajitas lacked spice and flavor, and my Texas rice, was cool to the touch, and the queso on it was hardening up because the dish was clearly not even warm or hot. So disappointing, I hope the next visit is better. But I don't think my date will want to come back for a second chance.

Nishita P.

Yelp
The free guac was some of the best guac I've had at a restaurant (not just mashed avocados). Great quantity. Please was clean. However, each of the items were very salty for my taste. Besides that, the food was well-seasoned and thee were many vegetarian-friendly options. I would return if I am in the area if the dishes could be made with less salt.

Christopher P.

Yelp
I am Christopher Peterson I ate at this restaurant and the service and food was horrible and they overcharged my account $7 and the manager had the audacity to to say was my fault here's proof

Adair T.

Yelp
I came here a few weeks ago in a Tuesday. Obviously it was taco Tuesday and they had $1.50 tacos, which I didn't get.. they looked good though. I can't remember what I got, grilled chicken over rice and veggies with cheese dip over it. It was also good, but of course I massacred it with hot sauce. I got a free cheese dip for checking in on Yelp which was cool too. My friend ordered table style guac and they literally drug a cart to your table and made it from scratch right in front of you, and the amount of guclac was insanely large. And delicious. They had pretty good beer and drink specials that day too. $2 off house margs (the huge ones) and $4 beer Stein sized beers.. I think 22oz? They were big. Our sever was very accommodating and attentive to our group. It wasn't the best Mexican food I've ever had ever, but I enjoyed it. I'd be willing to come back with a group again.

Misty C.

Yelp
UberEats will deliver! The house made tortilla chips are great. The food is always delicious with large portions. We've never had issues with flavor in our experiences. They always have drink or dinner specials. On occasion the male servers aren't that great (I literally had to go get my own beer from the bar after watching a table arrive after us get their cocktails before me); however, the female servers are always fantastic. The food is enough to give them 5 Stars.

Annie R.

Yelp
Cleanly environment as soon as you walked on the patio! Our server Alaina was amazing. Answered all my questions and accommodated all my picky requests with a smile. Food came out promptly and sizzling. Price was on point. We will be back. Even considered coming back the same day for dinner.

Trikarri B.

Yelp
I go for the Malibu Bucket that we never order. One day, Yelpers. Until that day, I'll keep enjoying the food. So I kept seeing Poblanos on the UberEATS app but couldn't place where it was on my min. A friend and I went to check it out. There's definitely ample parking. The first time I got a Combo 21. Chili Relleno, Tamale and Tostada. Wasn't a fan of their relleno but the rest of the food was tasty. I'm obsessed with their tamales. The carne sauce they put on top is delicious. I've only been twice so hopefully next time we get the Malibu bucket. They keep the beverages refilled and the chips and salsa are fresh every time!

George A.

Yelp
We love the food from Poblanos and have been patronizing them for 10 years. However, when ordering through a delivery app such as Doordash etc. the situation varies considerably. We either get too much of X and not enough Y or no Z but plenty of Q.....in otherwords, inconsistent portions. Today we ordered the Homemade Guacamole (Fabulous) but were sent a bag of tortilla chips with perhaps 20 chips in the bag. This is nothing new. Since Covid our delivery orders have been all over the road. The food is delicious for sure but the portion consistency is 0. They seriously need to address this.

Tammy G.

Yelp
Cute authentic looking Mexican restaurant. My seafood enchiladas were dressed nicely with spinach and avocado slices. The margaritas were good too.

Nayelli M.

Yelp
First time going and it will be my last . The experience at the restaurant was great, our server was fantastic but I kid you NOT when say I was eating my leftovers I bite on a PIECE OF METAL! I don't even know what to do right now but yeah that was my experience

Chloe N.

Yelp
yummmm!!! Ordered the chili verde, been craving it forever and couldn't find any restaurants that served it and FINALLY!! It was so good! My husband got a burrito which he said was very tasty. They also gave us two bags of homemade chips and salsa!

David F.

Yelp
Told you guys I will destroy you on yelp ! Here it is..... Ordered the chicken soup and the chicken had to have been over a week old. It tasted raw/metallic absolutely disgusting that it made my wife gag twice. Told the waiter about it and everything. Shortly after the manager came out and was extremely upset "who ordered the chicken soup"! We explained to him and he explained himself in the most disrespectful way possible. He said " that's how the soup tastes and if you order it again it's going to taste the same so don't order it ever again if you don't like it" , then he stormed off. I will never ever come here again not just because of what happened but this place smells, looks, and is absolutely nasty. Their A/c wasn't even working and we were sweating. Never ever come here please do yourself and your family a favor and go somewhere else .

Jade F.

Yelp
The chips and salsa is perfect, it's spicy and delicious. I ended up eating more of that than the rest of my meal. I'm vegetarian so I have to eat off of the vegetarian menu. The bean burrito was good but not great, the enchiladas were rubbery and they messed up that order several times. The device was good, we got our food quickly.

Scott E.

Yelp
Since the Wuhan virus shutdown, things have happened at this restaurant. Many prices went up 50 to 80 %. For no good reason. Plus the service went down even more. My friend ordered nachos and they hardly put any chips in it. I guess we ate too many chips WAITING and waiting. So they decided he didn't need chips in it. This place has good food overall. But the scuzzy location and interior are not worth the new price levels they are charging, IMHO. Without good service, it isn't worth it.

Caty C.

Yelp
Super disappointed in my experience at Poblano's last week. Met up with a friend for some drinks and food. I've always assumed, judging by the exterior, that Poblano's was a lively, fun place. The interior was a whole other story. Quiet, Bright and awkward. We sat in the bar where several TVs were playing - but no sound. Music was on in the restaurant, but no music in the bar area. Flashing lights faced directly at us - an annoyance that added nothing to the "theme" or vibe of the restaurant. We took advantage of the Yelp Check-In offer for a free small cheese dip. It was alright - would have preferred some spices or seasoning as it was very bland. The chips were okay as well. Not very warm or fresh. I ordered a Skinny Margarita which was very bland and weak - tasting mostly like agave syrup. Had to order a shot of tequila to pour in. I normally order Skinny Margaritas because they have more natural flavors (fresh lime etc) than regular Margaritas - which are heavy on the pre-made mix taste. I also ordered 2 pulled-pork tacos with lettuce tomato and cheese. They were a good size but the pork was the DRIEST I've ever had. I tried to salvage it with this very bland dipping(?) sauce provided but that didn't help. I couldn't even eat the second one. The staff was friendly but slow and too casual - it felt like we were at someone's house. And not in a positive way. I can't see myself returning to Poblano's - even though its location is convenient to home.

Jay T.

Yelp
Had a good experience today. The chips & salsa were really good, and the dinner chicken fajitas and enchiladas were also good. As with all Mexican restaurants I've been to they never bring enough tortillas for the fajita plate - always just three, but enough food for four or five. My gf's hard taco shell was inedible; poorly cooked, rubbery she said. Only other negatives were waiter brought rice instead of the beans my gf had requested (why do so many places not write orders down!?) and he forgot to bring the extra salsa we requested (I did say it was good), but he quickly corrected both oversights once we said something.

C C.

Yelp
Best salsa you will ever have. However, the most watery queso fundido with chorizo. And I had to ask for the poblanos that were supposed to be included. The Green Iguana margarita was good though. Slow service. I'll never go back.

Megan R.

Yelp
When we went in, we waited a solid 5 minutes for the host to appear. Several other workers were walking around in a hurry, but no one approached the people walking in the door? Strike 1. We get seated and then have to wait a considerable amount of time for our server to appear. Strike 2. While friendly, he was soft spoken and difficult to understand (not due to any English issues). While we were looking the menu over, someone else delivered chips and salsa, apologizing for not coming sooner. Soon after, the server delivered our beverages and we placed our order. While we waited, I checked in and realized we could get a free small guac or cheese dip, so I showed it to the server who looked confused and mumbled something about a manager. A significant amount of time passed. BF commented that his beer was warm and tasted funny. I had finished my tea. Strikes 3 and 4. Our server was no where to be found. Eventually he showed up, sweaty, and realized he'd forgotten the cheese dip and said he'd go get the manager. I said not to worry about it, but he brought the manager since he hadn't heard me. I told the manager not to worry about it because our food should be out shortly. BF told him about the beer and he explained the keg cooler had went out the day prior and he walked away to check on it. He was immediately on the phone with the supplier. The server shows back up, now super sweaty, and asks if we are ready to order and we told him we'd already ordered. He remembered part of it and then quickly went away to check after I asked if it had been put in, as he couldn't remember. What strike are we on? Too many. All I wanted was my food. It came out within a few minutes. The food was bearable. My food was lukewarm, but I was starving, so I didn't complain. Since we had another stop to make after we left, I used the restroom before we left. It was a pigsty. Toilet paper every where, the entire bathroom was gross and dirty and you kinda wondered when you sat down if the toilet would stay upright. When I came back to the table, BF was pissed because the beer hadn't been comped from the bill, despite it being warm and us informing the manager that something was wrong. Seriously, if there was a way to give 0 stars, I would. As I started writing this (the day of), I read Jackson H's review and was worried about the prospect of food poisoning from my lukewarm food, but it was too late since my food had already been eaten. There are so many food options in this area. This will be the only time I'll say this about restaurants in Charleston, but if you are choosing between Poblanos and a chain restaurant, GO TO THE CHAIN.

Randy M.

Yelp
Great food and great staff, the sampler option on the menu is extremely cheap and very filling. The atmosphere gives the sense of a hole in the wall type of restaurant with grade A service.

Mike M.

Yelp
I went here for lunch on a weekend with the wife and I always order the same thing no matter which Mexican restaurant, the chicken and steak fajitas. I try and eat at as many Mexican restaurants to try them all to find the best. One thing about Poblanos, it's very average. Nothing bad to say nothing great to say. I was extremely cold inside and gave my only sweatshirt I kept in the car to my wife because she was freezing too and I love the cold, so this was particularly cold temperatures inside. I thought Poblanos was a chain since I went to one in Orlando that had the same colors and same vibe, but the staff rest assured me they were not the same chain. I was a little disappointed in this because I loved the one in Orlando. Anyway, to make my point again. Very average Mexican restaurant.

Julie T.

Yelp
I found Poblanos to be a below average type of cookie cutter Mexican-esque restaurant. We were greeted at the front door promptly enough and sat at a nice table, but then had to wait quite some time for our waiter to show up. That set the pace for our entire experience, as our waiter was quite slow taking our order bringing our food out, and bringing us our check at the end. Quite honestly, the food was your typical ubiquitous cookie-cutter crappy "Mexican", that has started loosing popularity as of late, and with good reason. The entire experience was just kind of "meh". I probably won't be back.

Marian H.

Yelp
Gave this place another try during a less busier time and service was much faster...Food still fresh and tasty..cozy atmosphere. Had a coupon for a free appetizer..opted for the con queso white cheese dip and mixed it with some pico de gallo...zesty! still want to check out the Wed karaoke night but noone wants to join me even though I promised them I wouldn't actually sing
