Portland, Oregon Barbecue Restaurant Podnah’s Is Opening Lone Star Burger Bar Right Next Door | Eater Portland

"A Texas-style barbecue spot whose owner, Rodney Muirhead, and the team have been working on the perfect burger blend using the restaurant’s brisket trim since early summer; they are turning their popular burger pop-up into a full-fledged restaurant set to open in the former La Taq space next to the barbecue on December 4. The restaurant will be open seven days a week from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m." - Rebecca Roland

This is one of Baton Rouge's best barbecue family spots. Man, i love this food. The atmosphere is so peaceful. It's amazing.I love this place.Go try it. The food is top-notch!! I get the pulled pork and ribs and potato salad. Don't forget the amazing baked bean with chard smoked brisket. Yum!! Go try it, you won't regret it!

9.7.24 came here for the first time approx. at 2:50 P.M. I ordered the 2 meats platter: chicken and sausage. Usually they ask if you want white or dark meat, and I forgot to mention it...so I was plated a breast and wing. I think it would have been dry regardless, though. I got the sides of collard greens and potato salad. I nibbled on some of it and threw it away. My bf 's lean brisket sandwich seemed pretty good.

People are sleeping on Podnuhs BBQ.I left work want bbq, stop here and I tell you the 2 gentleman one with dreads, one with golds in his mouth, but dont let the looks fool you the were very professional and patient, because I was clueless to what I wanted. The food was amazing and I'm picky when it comes to potato salad and baked beans I got the 3 meat platter. Tender and delicious. Go see these guys. Hospitality 100%.

Google
The food here is better than amazing, it's beyond everything you'd expect. Flavor, presentation, I can't say enough!! My favorite thing about this place is definitely the customer service!!! They treated everyone well. I will definitely be a regular customer. Next on the list to try is the whole smoked catfish.

Google
This was our second time coming to this place and our last time because number one we paid 26.00 for two plates of food and only was able to eat the meat really .. the potato salad was too salty the bbq sauce was watered down.. the portion of the meat was not enough to feed a child to be honest.. it just wasn’t worth the money we paid.. we could have went down to Sonny’s and the food would have tasted better and to top it off the atmosphere was a cold attitude from each person I came into contact with.. and the final thing is the man in the green shirt who spoke to me seemed nice except not to his employees and that’s what makes their attitudes not so nice so I don’t blame them for any of this I blame the man in the green shirt.. he needs to learn how to treat the employees and I don’t know if he is the owner or just the manager but u need to do better sir and then your business will be better oh and the beans were watery too.. it just wasn’t worth it or even good!!

Google
The BEST Baked Beans on the planet!!! The Potato salad rocks too! Everything we ordered was excellent! Pulled pork, sausage, chicken.

Google
All around good solid BBQ, the meat was tender and warm. The baked beans were awesome and the Mac and Cheese was top notch. So why only four stars? Because I prefer BBQ that has more of a kick. This was good solid “Q”, I just prefer it spicier.

Google
Definitely hit this spot if you want some savory, smokey BBQ with a sweet and tangy sauce. I got the pulled pork platter with potato salad and baked Mac and cheese.

Yelp
This old school BBQ place is worth visiting. While the building itself is rather tired and worn, the atmosphere is homey and the dining area is spacious. They have a lot of choices, especially when it comes to sides! I had the lunch pork plate and it was delicious! I also loved the sides I selected (green beans and coleslaw). Everything was seasoned to perfection. Prices are fair and the staff are super friendly and they made up my lunch plate right away. I regret that I didn't take a photo but trust me, this place isn't to be missed!

Yelp
The building is old and has never been remodeled, but that is what makes good Q,Old school Slow cooked barb-Q ,Good prices and great food

Yelp
Love the sausage, the potato salad and baked beans. They have lunch specials, which are good deals. Also like the drive up window.

Yelp
The main course was 2 orders of 6 piece Ribs. which were great tasting, tender and falling off the bone. There were a variety of sides to choose from. The sides that were chosen were plentiful, again flavored, well seasoned just great tasting. Prompt service I was in and out of Podnuh's Bar-B-Q within 15min. It was a call in order. The atmosphere was warm friendly and pleasant as well as the employees working there. Overall Podnuh's, provided a satisfying experience for my friend and I both.

Yelp
Delicioso!! I'll definitely return here for great BBQ and trimmings. I ordered the beef brisket and ribs family spread that serves 3-5. It comes with one or two choices of another meat, so I chose chicken. All of the meats were great per other family members but I can personally attest to the ribs and chicken which were well smoked and seasoned perfectly. There was no pull to the ribs like those at Dreamland (no shade, facts). For the sides, I got potato salad, mac n cheese, baked beans and peach cobbler for dessert and they all were scrumptious. You can clearly tell the best sellers and most popular sides by looking at the pictures. I came on a Saturday around 4:30pm and the baked beans were just about gone. So I got the rest and glad I did. They're sides are sold in 4 oz., 8 oz., pints and quarts. The staff on that shift were super nice and friendly with great dispositions and the regular customers who came in were just as friendly. The only reason I couldn't give them 5 stars is because they were extra skimpy on the brisket. It almost looked like crumbs in the box and I wasn't too thrilled about that when I got home. That aside, everything else was worth the visit and a definite revisit! (imma check that brisket next time before I leave tho).

Yelp
The smell once you walk in the door is amazing! We where early so there wasn't many customers yet. We ordered the BBQ Sampler. I have to say I was so impressed. I normally do not eat ribs but these ribs YALL they were soooo good and the flavor was amazing! They weren't sloppy with sauce and they were seasoned perfectly. The chicken was moist and well seasoned aswell as the brisket and beef. I so thrilled that they seasoned the sides because most restaurants drop the ball on the sides and serve bland can veggies. The restaurant is nice and roomy and the staff was friendly. When we left the parking lot was full and I have no regrets. First impression: Drove up and looked at the parking lot and building thinking to myself that this might not be the place to have lunch. The restroom was not ideal at all which furthered my mind of the wrong decision! So glad we stayed and had lunch!

Yelp
Tied for lunch with some ribs and sausage. Baked beans and coleslaw. Overall the food was good and so was the friendly staff. Baked beans are a mustard style which were really good. Coleslaw was fresh and good as well. My sausage was a bit dry and so were the ribs but it had great flavor.

Yelp
Podnuh's Bar-B-Q is a simple, old-fashioned BBQ place that serves good food at a good price. This location has been around for much longer than I have lived in Baton Rouge, and is convenient and easy to like. Podnuh's employs a cafeteria-style serving line, where you order your meat(s) or sandwiches, serve yourself some sides, then pay and select your seating. There is ample room for you and your crew, and the interior decor tells you that your are at a BBQ place. The BBQ is as good as it smells, and there are always good side dishes to choose from. Sandwiches come in regular and large sizes, and there are a variety of lunch specials one can save some money by checking out. There is also a drive through so one can get a meal to go if one wants. I suggest going in and taking time to enjoy some smoked goodness though, but the option is available.

Yelp
Today was my first time going here. Actually got into a discussion on which is better, here or Couyon's. I say HERE! The meat is seasoned well, juicy, smoky DELICIOUS. I'm done. Here or nothing. They have all you can eat brisket Thursday's, Sunday Buffett....I got the meat platter. Tried all of it. I usually hate pulled pork (I know, I'm weird), but loved theirs. They had me at hello.

Yelp
Excellent lunch. Good mild sausage. Not too spicy for the kids. Great BBQ! Would definitely go back again

Yelp
Podnuhs is good if your craving bbq but can't get to your favorite place at that moment. The pulled pork is a little different and not as soft as I prefer but still good. The chicken is always dry. I don't like a dry chicken. The ribs are a hit and miss. I guess it really depends on who's smoking the meat that day. I do not like the sauce as it is vinegar based. It takes an acquired taste and I've been eating it for years (my parents usually got meals from here during the week) and still don't like it very much. The toast is perfect. I could literally eat their toast and be fine. The inside needs an update and it would be nice if you didn't seem like a bother when you dine inside.

Yelp
This was my first time trying Podnuh's BAR-B-Q. The service was amazing from the time I placed my order over the phone until I arrived to the establishment. I order the BAR-B-Q Sampler and the Kids meal with chicken and bake beans, side and drink! It's filling and full of flavor in the food!! The staff was also amazing!! Will be back soon!! Thanks!!

Yelp
This place is so dirty I had to quit going. Years ago the food was great that's hard to believe if you've been lately. They also never have anything you to try to order. They told me they no longer have baked potatoes because of covid. Hmmm how does that make any since ? It doesn't ! They have fresh sliced onions and cut up chicken and other meats

Yelp
everything on my plate was cold after waiting like 8 minutes in the drive through and im pregnant and aggravated cause i just knew since its sunday it was going to be good fir and last time ill go im so mad

Yelp
I have to be honest the first time I went there I was apprehensive to go in because of the decor/appearance but the food was pretty good. Usually will get the brisket and half BBQ ed chicken, which are usually pretty good. I also like the coleslaw and green beans.

Drew J.

Yelp
I grew up eating at this Florida Blvd location and it's been as good as ever lately. Great Texas style barbecue and a good nostalgic atmosphere. I go elsewhere in BR for barbecue occasionally but I always find myself coming back to Podnuh's as my favorite in town. It's not the "pretentious" pecan-smoked overpriced artisan barbecue that seems to be a fad right now, but it's just delicious and consistent every time I go, and you get way more in quality and quantity than you pay for. As an added bonus, the guys who work at this location are all really cool and friendly. It's one of those places that I always leave happy and in a good mood, which is getting harder and harder to find in Baton Rouge these days.

Yelp
I think I enjoyed saying the name of this place more then the food. That doesn't mean the food was bad, it's just fun to say "Pod-nuhs" (southern for "partner's"...I think). I tried the two-meat meal, which comes with two meats, two sides, and the "trimmings". This consisted of brisket, pulled pork, baked beans, coleslaw, some pickles, some whole jalapeños, and some Texas Toast (e.g. white bread toasted with butter). Once you get your meats, the rest of the meal is buffet-style where you choose and serve the sides yourself. The BBQ was pretty good but didn't blow me away. There was no intense smoke flavor cooked into the meat and the barbecue sauce was average. The baked beans were actually outstanding tasting, but they left a pool of oil on my tray which was kind of suspect. Overall, it was a decent BBQ meal at a good price point, but nothing really stood out as excellent or memorable. Given the other options in the area, its probably worth trying out if you're visiting.

Yelp
This is not a place I will visit often, but it is OK in a pinch and if you are in the area. The pulled pork could have been better, but the chicken was good. However, I am not a fan of the vinegar-y BBQ sauce. The prices are pretty good, though, and the amount of food per meal is pretty substantial. The staff was nice but very slow to get to me at the drive through window. I was about to just park and walk in when someone finally came and took my payment after I sat at the window for quite a while after placing my order. Also, even after taking quite a while, they got my order wrong and gave me potato salad (which I don't like) rather than baked beans. Of course, I didn't discover this until after I pulled away, so word to the wise: check your order before you leave.

Yelp
I have been eating at Podnuh's since I was a child. My experience began in West Monroe, LA over 30 years ago. Once I moved to Lafayette, LA I only got to enjoy Podnuh's when I returned home to visit family. I moved to Baton Rouge in 2007 and had been a loyal Podnuh's customer ever since. After yesterday's experience I will NEVER spend another dime with Podnuh's. I was the first customer of the day, ordering 2 lbs of sliced brisket and 2 quarts of beans for an event. I made it to the event, passed the food off to someone else to serve to the girls while I attended to other matters. The plates were served to the girls and when I returned, much to my absolute horror, I had not received sliced brisket. I had receive this crumbled mess of hard, charred, dried out "something". It wasn't the juicy and flavorful sliced beef brisket I was accustomed to. I was horrified. I called the store, the manager on duty was rude and didn't know I what I expected him to do about the problem. I gave him two options: 1) bring me what I ordered or 2) refund my credit card the cost of the slop I had been provided. He said he had no idea how he was supposed to "bring" me a replacement so I agreed to come by after the event to have the money refunded. Once I arrive at Podnuh's that afternoon, I asked to see the manager. The person that identified himself as the manager it seems was not the manager. This very rude woman emerged from the back and demanded the brisket back in order to refund my purchase. I nearly fell down laughing! First of all, the gentleman (and I'm being kind using that term) that I interacted with on the phone did not tell me I needed to take the plates away for 7 girls ages 6-8 and SCRAPE the crumpled beef off of their plates having already been served with the beans, a dinner role and piece of cake. This woman then used a person cell phone (how rude and business inappropriate is that?) to contact the person from this morning. Anyway, I demanded the name and number of the owner for contact and my request was denied. I left having spent over $25 on brisket (the girls ate the beans and they enjoyed them) that was not edible, went into the trash. I offered to retrieve the trash bag from the facility we had used for our event and bring it to the "Manager" so she could sort through and scrape the bbq sauce covered slop off the discarded plates so she could have her 2 lbs of uneaten brisket back. I understand "policy" but yet there is also good business. Did she really expect me to take the plates away from little girls and scrape food off of them and back into a box to bring it back? Really? That is the most absurd thing I have ever heard. Anyway, I won't be spending any money with Podnuh's ever again. I'm sad to see a 30+ year relationship end.

Yelp
Well what can I say about this place, place was perfectly settled in an excellent location. The smell of the meats smoking for hours hits you like a brick, but it's the kind of smell you're tempted to lick. The prices are overwhelming at first glance and the selection was very straight forward if you know what you are exactly feeling. As for my plate I purchased the 2 meat plate (Sausage and Ham, sides were vanilla pudding and Mac and cheese). Sauce is perfection for BBQ, right kind of tang with the balance of vinegar pushing, not overwhelming at all. Sweet Tea I will also recommend as a beverage. It's perfect. Overall this place is what San Antonio would need to capitalize on. I don't think expanding the franchise would take away from the originality, but won't know until they take that chance. Try it! Don't be afraid.

Yelp
Ive been going to the one on Sherwood Forest for a while now because its closer to where I live. But I forgot how much I liked this location and the atmosphere. I grew up going to this one and cant really remember ever having a bad meal. Occasionally the brisket is a little dry and occasionally its nothing short of amazing. I just hope they keep this one open for a very long time, one of my favorites in town.

Yelp
Pretty decent BBQ! The interior is a little outdated but normally the best food comes from places like this. The brisket was very tender and not too dry! I'd recommend this place if you were looking for good BBQ! Price point was really good too. Overall good experience.

This place is awesome ! I got the brisket n half chicken and it was great !! Everyone was nice too!!

Yelp
This is truly the best BBQ in Baton Rouge. I'm from Mississippi and grew up eating real BBQ and this is truly the closest thing that I have found in Louisiana to what I used to eat all the time in the Mississippi delta. The ribs are tender and juicy. The baked beans are fantastic. The sweet tea is just the right amount of sweet. The place looks pretty run down, but the people are so sweet. I just thought I'd add that I've tried many of the BBQ places from TJ ribs to smokin aces. There is always something off with every other BBQ place around that I've been to. Podnuh's is consistently delicious.

Yelp
I really wish the pulled pork had more flavor. It wasn't really bad, but it didn't feel like I am in the deep south either. Whoever was on the grill that night needed to really get funky with it! It's BAR-B-Q....it should taste like it!
google avatar

Kim G.

Yelp
The ribs are off the chain!!... The barbecue sauce is a little bitter add a little brown sugar and the sauce will be fine. Will eat there again!!

Patrick G.

Yelp
Cafeteria style servings at bargain prices. I had a beef brisket sandwich with two sides. The beef itselft was average, nothing to really wow dig at. It just was.... The two sides I had were eh. I had a potato salad that was basically like eating mustard flavored potatoes so if you like that then you'll love it. I had a banana flavored pudding with nilla wafers in it that had the banana flavor of the candy banana in runts. So ya.. Decent enough to go back if people are going but not a place I would seek out.
