I love this place & I’ve been local to Charleston for more than half of my life at this point… this is not your usual tourist destination — it’s a beloved establishment by visitors and local residents alike! Outstanding service, phenomenal food and the atmosphere is the perfect embodiment of Edgar Allan Poe’s world. Highly recommend! P.S. I had Annabel Lee burger with crabcake and beef patties, a tavern salad and soup of the day that was corn chowder. Great beer selection always.

Google
Was a nice day, so we sat outside. Fun place and good service! Great burger menu! You can sub any for chicken or veggie as well. We shared the nachos, which was delish! My mother said her burger was very tasty! Would recommend!

Google
Always love this place, food is amazing but not overly complicated and staff is efficient and friendly! Poe himself is somehere tripping on the original morphine and dreading going back to West Point! LOL but for real, so good!!!!

Stopped for a quick minute and a drink with my daughter. The bartender only charged us for one beverage because of the ice cubes. I loved the ambiance: E. A. Poe portraits everywhere, and the women's restroom was papered with his poetry and stories.

If you are on Sullivan's Island, I recommend eating at Poe's Tavern. This restaurant has a cool vibe and a nice selection of craft beers on tap. I had the Beef Tell-Tale Heart burger. It has a fried egg with bacon and cheddar cheese. It was so delicious. The fries were really good, too. I look forward to coming back.

Google
This restaurant is located on Sullivan's Island. I wanted to love it as I had been looking forward to it when planning our visit to Charleston. Our meal was not very good, we both had burgers cooked medium that were cooked correctly on the inside but were very dry at the same time. I felt like this restaurant was trying to do too much. With the extensive menu and little cohesion. The look of the restaurant was too much, and our service wasn't very good. I would skip this restaurant next time, unfortunately.

Google
We enjoyed our dinner here. I had the Edgar Punch as a mocktail and the Rue Morgue burger. It was delicious. My husband had the Golden Bug Plus made with Garlic Blue cheese. He said it was amazing. The only thing I wished was that the music was not as loud. We felt like we were yelling to talk to each other.

Google
Great little Poe memorial here with themed food and atmosphere. Food is all solid standards and some good nachos, tuna tacos and chili. Very attentive staff and good beer list.

Yelp
This is a truly great restaurant! The menu has something for everyone, we tried the Annabel Burger and also enjoyed the Black Cat Burger!! Such a fresh beef burger experience, well prepared and cooked to perfection! This restaurant goes beyond! They grind their own burger to make all of their hamburgers! Was amazing and highly recommend! A must stop when in Savannah, or any of their other locations, our visit was their restaurant just off the waterfront street! Enjoy!!! Our Server was excellent and very knowledgeable! A great experience all around!!! Will return again and again!!

Ken K.

Yelp
Best Burger I have ever had!! The ambience is fun and upbeat and the staff is great! Wife and I tried different burgers and man, what an incredible flavor for both...perfectly prepared to order and every bite tasted like you're eating succulent, juicy, ribeye!! Highly recommend!!

Yelp
I normally try to go to a place more than once before I post a review, but honestly this wouldn't be worth it for multiple reasons. The first is that there always seems to be a long wait outside. If the food was worth the wait, I would consider spending an hour and a half waiting for a table. The second reason is the food isn't worth the wait. It was very bland, and our burgers were underdone. The fries were fine, I guess. They're known for their burgers but there was nothing special about them. Don't forget you're also paying Sullivan's Island prices: my burger, the Hop Frog - with BBQ sauce, Monterey Jack cheese, and bacon - ended up being $19. That's a lot for a mediocre burger. The third - and this is most likely a one-off - is the waiter we got was kind of rude. He did appear to be one of only two servers on the floor, with others primarily being food runners, but he didn't really talk with us and ignored our table for most of the time we were at the restaurant. Maybe this place is better for drinks? We didn't get any alcohol so we can't speak on that, but the bar area looked okay. There was also a fireplace which was lit while we were there, so that was nice. The highlight of the meal was probably going outside and buying some Girl Scout cookies from kids in the parking lot. I would go somewhere else if on Sullivans. Home Team is right across the street and the food & drinks are better and worth the price.

Yelp
After taking the Ft Sumter tour, we wanted to check out Sullivan Island. Edgar Allen Poe spent time on Sullivan Island, so we decided to check out a burger place named in his honor. I had the Pit & Pendulum burger w/ bacon, cheese and a side of fries (sorry for the lousy pic). Regarding the ambiance, its open air. There is indoor & outdoor dining. PT is very casual. Emily was a super nice & attentive waitress. The only things I did not like was a 3% "service" charge, and not receiving an itemized bill so I could tip accordingly. I generally tip 20% of the pre-tax amount. The auto generated tip on the portable POS unit tips on the plus tax amount. All in all, a positive experience. At least we found parking adjacent, which is more than I can say for the remainder of Charleston.

Gabriel M.

Yelp
Beware of mosquitos if you sit outside! Always nice to have dinner at sunset on Sullivan's. Food is pretty standard American but good. Very reasonable prices!

Amy C.

Yelp
The food here is always excellent as well as the vibe! Parking can be difficult once their private lot is full, and sometimes there is a wait during peak season. We did not have to wait for a table after arriving at 6:30, which was pleasantly surprising! The service could be better, we were here for about an hour and a half and our server never refilled our waters, so that was a little disappointing, but I'll definitely be back!

Suzanne S.

Yelp
Poe's is a great choice for a burger on Sullivan's Island. It has a fun, dive bar atmosphere and is conveniently located near the beach. Like most places on Sullivan's, it is busy. We visited on a weeknight and were seated right away inside. The decor is Edgar Allen Poe themed (including restrooms). The lighting is dim (as you can see from my photos!). The draft beer list is solid, but the server was not knowledgeable about the offerings. I had the goldbug plus (cheeseburger with premium cheese options). I chose the housemade black bean patty and garlic blue cheese spread. My spouse opted for the goldbug with a beef patty and (I think) monterey jack cheese. We both chose fries as our side. My burger was very salty, but I think it was mostly the garlic blue cheese spread (although I noticed another review said the food was too salty). The black bean patty tasted great, but was a bit crumbly and parts of it fell apart. I had a local sour and my spouse ordered a pineapple wheat. Pretty sure he received the wrong beer because his tasted like an IPA. It was fine, fortunately he doesn't mind an IPA so we rolled with it.

Julie O.

Yelp
Love the atmosphere of Poes. We had sandwiches and they were very good. Great place to hang out and have drinks. Service was good. They were busy and we were a small party and there were many large parties.

Anthony W.

Yelp
I'm not quite sure where to start my commentary... The staff is ok but not very knowledgeable. The restaurant is dated which is fine, but it isn't that clean. The bathroom was half out of order and dirty. The food was ridiculously salty. The fries and onion straws came out warm (not hot) and soggy. All well and good they are made fresh in house but if you can't fry and hold them correctly, then what's the point? A mushy potato bun was served in place of the stated brioche bun. If I had known that, I wouldn't have ordered the burger. Oh and as you can see on the bill, they charged for extra pickles. This is after providing 2 small pickles on the burger. Not to mention the somewhat "crisp" underripe slice of tomato we received and the piece of lettuce that was smaller than the palm of my hand. The veggies were an afterthought from some refrigerated food delivery company.. To add insult to injury, they charge a 3% surcharge and then when they hand you the computer to pay, they provide their tipping recommendations starting at 20% ON TOP of the surcharge and tax. So wait, you jack my bill up $13.50 and ask for a $3.10 tip on that? This is after serving a sub par meal by staff who don't know their own menu? Simply unacceptable overall. Burger meat was tasty but that's where this began and ended for us. Horribly disappointing and worst meal of our two weeks down in the area- no question. Skip and find somewhere else or make the effort to drive to Mt Pleasant for a burger. Simply no reason to come here.

Kristen P.

Yelp
We found Poe's by accident and I'm so glad we did! It was absolutely amazing! We ordered nachos to start and they were fantastic. The chips were extra thin and crispy, but didn't break when you scooped up all of the nacho goodness! Next, we ordered two burgers and a chicken sandwich with bacon, cheese, and bbq sauce. All of these entrees were wonderful! I can't stress enough how excellent all the food, side dishes, and service was! I liked at Poe's you could choose between a burger, chicken, or veggie burger for each creation. Such a great idea! Our only complaint is that we can't go back in a regular basis! Thanks for an awesome meal!

Laura S.

Yelp
Cute casual bar/ restaurant on Sullivan's Island. Dimly lit making it a nice atmosphere for a casual date or lunch with friends. Dim lights always make for the best selfies too. Pictures of Poe everywhere and book pages along the bathroom wall. A Poe fan, teacher or librarian would probably love it. I had the veggie burger which was good. Classic veggie burger where you can see the beans and veggies as opposed to faux meat like beyond or impossible. The fries were amazing. Thin cut, greasy and salty. The best. My son had the grilled cheese and French fries which he loved. Kid friendly. When the hostess saw me walk in with a toddler she asked if I wanted a booth which was perfect for him. They do also have highchairs. Outside seating available The bar has outside bar seats and inside bar seats, can't wait to go back when it's not raining And... drum roll... a PARKING LOT

Emma P.

Yelp
Treat yourself and head over to Poe's Tavern on Sullivans island, nothing beats a Saturday spent on Sullivans followed by a burger or chicken sandwich. The whole dynamic of Poe's is so fun, nothing gets old there. I took my family there back in august and they loved it, my little brothers were fully intrigued by the decor and the full menu of burgers to choose from. My dad got a the beef gold bug plus, which he absolute loved. Big pimento cheese family so the add on of that was the topping on the cake for him. I got the chicken gold bug plus, and was a winner in my heart. Im not big of a burger person so the options they had were perfect for me. Now the french fries, were just devine. talk about the handcut small crunchy fries, everyone will be stealing each others off everyone plates. You could get full just off of those alone. Highly recommend going earlier or making sure you are able to wait for a delicious meal. very much worth it but defiantly a busy place so just keep in mind.

Kevin M.

Yelp
Excellent food and service! We stopped by on a Saturday afternoon and were immediately seated at one of the outdoor patio tables. The menu selection was great and so was the beer / cocktail menu. It's located right on the main road, so a little loud, but not too bad. I'd definitely go back if in the area!

Sheridan T.

Yelp
The absolute best burger in Charleston!!! I love the beef gold bug plus with blue cheese & a side of ranch. SO FABULOUS!

Jacqueline T.

Yelp
Edgar Allan Poe is one of my favorite authors and I appreciate others who also love his writing. This tavern is devoted to Poe (the entire theme of both the restaurant and menu) and you can find cleverly named items on the menu dedicated to his works. I am a big fan of the Beef Amontillado and Large Mahi Taco. It is also dog friendly! A great, fun atmosphere, fairly priced food and quick service. We actually stopped in with a large group earlier today and they were very accommodating. Poe's also has a free parking lot which is unheard of on Sullivan's.

Rob S.

Yelp
We stopped in Poe's Tavern one evening with no reservations, but were quickly seated inside. Our desire was to sit outside, but we weren't prepared for an hour wait. The atmosphere inside is bumping and was quite busy. We all ordered burgers, and they were very good. This place certainly has a beach town vibe and I recommend it for anybody coming into Sullivans Island.

Ellen S.

Yelp
Fun friendly vibe. Seems to attract locals as well as tourists. Good burgers. I saw the bloody mary and they looked like a full meal. Good place to stop in after the beach.

April P.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my drink (Paloma) and sitting at the outdoor bar! The crab cake was really good. I ended up eating the crab cake separately from the rest of the burger. The vegetable sauce on the crab cake is really good! The burger was a bit too meaty for me so I didn't end up finishing it. I also wasn't a big fan of the bun because it fell apart when trying to eat it as a whole. However, Poe's is such a cool place at sullivans and the service was really good! The bartender was attentive and great at remembering my complicated order. The bathroom even has the works of Edgar Allan Poe posted on the walls! Definitely a nice place to check out if you're looking for a place to eat on Sullivans!

Jenn W.

Yelp
We enjoyed a quick, small lunch at Poe's recently while exploring Sullivan's Island. It was packed, as usual, but we got a table on the front porch relatively quickly. I ordered the chips, salsa & guacamole, while my friend selected the shrimp salad. Everything was very good. I know from prior visits that their burgers are amazing, so keep that in mind. We were just looking for a lighter meal at this particular visit.

Evan N.

Yelp
I'll start off with saying that the fries and the ranch were awesome! They had a great beer selection from nationwide to local brews which I appreciated because I love trying local beers wherever I visit. The burger was just okay. It didn't seem to be seasoned well and the bun was stale. It's crazy how much the bun can sway your opinion on a burger. If the bun was better I probably would have thought it was a decent burger. Service was great and timely couldn't have asked for better service! The ambiance defintely gave off a dive bar type of feel.

Barbara W.

Yelp
I wasn't very impressed with the food here. My friend got the salad and I had a bite and it was very underwhelming (dressing was ok a little too citrusy). I had the veggie burger and it was good, but not the best. My other friend had the tell-a-tale and he really enjoyed it, but also wasn't super impressed. The fries were very good though, the best thing out of our lunch. I honestly wouldn't go back, the food was just ok.

Suzanne H.

Yelp
Haven't been in years but was craving a burger. Service was lacking to say the least. No turkey burger option and figured being a burger place there might be a burger salad option but only a burger without a bun. Burger itself was ok. Ordered the same as my hubby with different sides and mine was over cooked. Onion straws and fries were too notch. Only saw our server 2xs and thought he forgot about us. Bathrooms are fancy portable bathrooms in the parking lot so keep that in mind.

Laura P.

Yelp
We have been here a few times and it is always crazy busy (good for them!). Husband and I had a chance to go out without teens and dog so we went there. Finally saw the inside which was fun, active love the bar seating area. The bartender was great. The big ossue- our food took an hour and it was not crazy tourist busy. At one point, we asked to just take the check and we figured we'd take our chances at sesame burger. Gave 1 star for setup, 1 for bartender who comped us the meals, 1 for I liked the vibe and for that bid go back. I think since we almost cashed out our burger came kinda sloppy since I remember previous times it being good. This was ok - we asked for medium and it wasn't but we were not going to risk another hour.

Zach P.

Yelp
We went to Poe's on a recommendation. Parking is tight so plan to carpool if you have a group. We liked the dive bar feel to Poe's and all the art and old timey photos where cool for this themed restaurant and gave us good talking points. The place was pretty busy but we were seated right away. The bathrooms are plastered with all Poe's literature and that was cool. We noticed they had a great craft beer selection and the bar drinks sounded great too. The waitress was attentive to our drinks and happy to help with any menu questions. We shared a shrimp quesadilla with guac, sour cream and salsa while we shared a beer and looked over the menu. I opted for the Buffalo shrimp blue cheese chicken sandwich and my sweet lady decided on the grilled Mahi tacos. Both entrees were excellent! It was a great start to our weekend and the place really has a cool vibe to it.

Brooke N.

Yelp
I loved the ambience of this Tavern, partially because of the theme being Edgar Allen Poe and mostly because of the tavern charm it has. Service was great, super friendly server who answered questions about the menu and offered recommendations. The food itself was killer, especially the burgers. If you want a burger you have to come to Poe's Tavern. A beer and a burger is really all you need to fall in love with this spot. The only downside is the price on liquor, specifically shots. I got shots for my friends and the shots weren't filled and cost $9 a pop.

Ella M.

Yelp
Unique and fun environment with the theme! The food (fish tacos and nachos) were delicious and very flavorful. The margarita was tasty. The staff was friendly and attentive!

Jessica A.

Yelp
I've been wanting to come here foreverrrr. I'm a burger connoisseur, so I had to! I ordered the beef gold bug plus with pimento cheese and it had crispy onions on top and it was amazing. We also ordered the nachos for the table, tore them up quickly. We all ordered cocktails and everyone was so happy with them. It is very pretty on the inside , loved the edgar Allen poe book pages as wallpaper in the bathroom. We sat outside on the porch and got to people watch , it was perfect !

Cheryl T.

Yelp
The wait was about 20 minutes at about 2 pm on Dec 26. Kelly G is a great server. Started w chips and queso with chili. The chips are made in-house and are super fresh, thin, crisp with just the right amount of salt! Yum! Had the basic cheeseburger (forgot the name) w Munster cheese. The burger was good, great pickles and the fries which are also fresh cut and fried were great.

Sarah-Bradley D.

Yelp
Talk about a yummy burger. Go here after the beach, not before because you're going to walk to indulge in both the burger and the shoestring onion straws. Really one of the better burgers we've ever had and the ranch is my favorite. The inside is pretty dark and bathrooms are small but the outdoor porch overlooks the Main Street on Sullivans and is really fun. I'd definitely recommend sitting outside if possible. They also have a parking lot which is a huge win. This is a great stop while on Sullivans.

Jen C.

Yelp
Artistically unique! Wonderful ambience! Friendly service and great food choices. I indulged in a seared ahi tuna salad - perfectly seasoned sesame crust atop a bed of fresh mix of romaine and spinach with a side of citrus dressing. Deeelish and refreshing for a hot day!

Susan H.

Yelp
Poe's never disappoints. I ordered a burger with no bun and didn't miss it for a sec! It was delicious. The side salad was fantastic as well, large portion with super fresh and plentiful veggies. The server was great and the food came out in record time, especially considering the place was jumpin'. There are so many fun decor things to look at while dining. It's such a cozy feel too, you can even kinda tell by the golden glow that my plate was basking in. Check it out!

Michelle S.

Yelp
Not the best food but gets the job done if you're in the area after a beach day with the family, nachos were good. Burger was good but the bun was bad. The tacos were whatever. I saw a review say it wasn't clean and the bathrooms were dirty but I wouldn't say that at all. The bathrooms were very nice and clean. Overpriced for what it is.

Adeline T.

Yelp
We loved the burgers here! The food selection was so great with a variety of options that are all unique. The service was okay but the restaurant as a whole was more casual dining so we weren't expecting much. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful overall so we will definitely be returning for a great option by the beach

ann marie c.

Yelp
Burgers are wonderful Fries were awesome Wait staff was very friendly Go Steelers !

Carissa K.

Yelp
Loved the atmosphere and the Poe artwork. Service was friendly and responsive. Food was excellent- picture is my husband's chicken sandwich. Can't wait to return.

Claire F.

Yelp
Good food. Good service. Restaurant celebrates Edgar Allen Poe. Recommend the shrimp & chorizo quesadilla. $$

Milo Z.

Yelp
First visit tonight, probably won't be returning. I was initially against visiting a chain, but caved when my visiting friend wanted to go for a burger. Upon arriving, we were greeted by a hostess who apparently doesn't like her job, which almost made me turn around. No, I'll go in. Our server was great and very attentive, so I didn't subtract the bullshit 3% "service charge" added to all checks, which I thought took a large set of balls by the manager. Also, this place absolutely nickel and dimes you to death - $0.50 for this, $1.00 for that and, in the end, you get an overcooked and dry burger. You can find better in the area with barely any effort, so my recommendation is that you avoid Poe's altogether and hit Wendy's instead (that's sarcasm).

Rob H.

Yelp
We stopped here, attracted to the relaxed vibe and outdoor seating. The menu was Poe themed, which made it fun. I'd urge you to give Poe's a try. We weren't too hungry; I had their excellent chili and my wife had chicken quesadillas. They were both really good, and we relaxed over a beer. Our waitress was personable and efficient, and encouraged our dawdling over our meal as we enjoyed the waning day. We had a perfectly languid afternoon with good food and attentive but not obtrusive service. I can't wait to return with my friends. As an aside, I'm in a wheelchair, and Poe's is very accessible and accommodating.

Stephen C.

Yelp
Enjoyed an Ahi Tuna salad. It was a busy Friday lunch but our server Maddy was great, my brother and I enjoyed outdoor seating. He had one of their signature burgers and said it was outstanding.

Sara B.

Yelp
Poe's is in a good location with easy parking. The staff are nice and food comes out super fast. Everyone in our party of 12 liked their food and left stuffed. Fries are great, burgers are juicy and shrimp tacos are great. We sat outside, which was HOT, but they were able to seat us immediately vs a 1hr wait.

Jeremy H.

Yelp
We stopped here while visiting Charleston and my only regret is that I didn't get there soon. I was only able to stay for one drink. However, I was able to try a local beer from Tideland. You can smell the ocean from the outdoor seating and the ambiance is great. It definitely has that beach town vibe. The service was quick and friendly. I didn't not order food; however, everything that came out for other tables smelled great. I will definitely be returning next time I'm in South Carolina.

courtlin l.

Yelp
I love this place!! The burgers are soo good and they cook it to perfection. The service was a little slow but fine. The resturant itself is so cute and all Edgar Allen Poe themed. Im coming back to try the tacos!

Daniela Z.

Yelp
I'm not really a burger person, meaning a burger is never my first choice to order somewhere, but I will specifically come to Poe's for their burgers because they're always so juicy and on point. We had family visiting from out of town and brought them here and they agreed their burgers are delicious. We also shared their guacamole and pico/salsa appetizer which was really good and you could tell freshly made. I especially love coming here when the weather is nice to sit outside! Always such good vibes, good customer service, and great food you can count on!

Sarah W.

Yelp
I've heard a lot of things about Poes Tavern and their burgers so I was very excited to get the opportunity to go for a lunch burger. The ambience itself is amazing. The interior decor just matching. The overall name and theme is on point and sitting by the fireplace was really neat. I ordered a burger and the presentation was great but I was a bit surprised by the overall burger itself. It was a bit underwhelming. The meat itself was delicious, but I could not really taste the pimento cheese that was on it and the bun, while it was delicious, also was overtaking the entire sandwich. I will say I did not enjoy the fries. They were a bit greasy, and Almost came off soggy rather than crispy and hot. The service was pretty decent. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming, but I would say nothing that went above and beyond a typical dining experience. I would come back and try something else on the menu.

Susan C.

Yelp
Another awesome dinner at Poe's!! The burgers, chicken sandwiches and fries are the best! But so is the chicken quesadilla!! The servers are very friendly and the restaurant is fun! Outside tables are great. The brews are very good too!

Amy W.

Yelp
My friend who has a home on Isle of Palm said that this place is very popular, and usually crowded, but we hit it on a weekday after labor day and it was not to crowded for a noon-ish lunch. Our server Kelly was fast and efficient, along with being super pleasant. They are known for their burgers, and what the hell, I have been eating like a pig for the last 7 days, why stop now? I ordered the "burger of the day" with coleslaw, BBQ sauce, cheese and bacon. It was everything you want in a burger. It was obviously hand formed from high quality (yet still a bit fatty) meat, and no shortage of toppings, you can see from my photo it was a mile high. We also upgraded to onion stings from fries because, yeah, onion strings rock! I actually split it with my hubs - who also split a shrimp taco plate with my other friend. Free refills of diet coke, so bonus points! The bathroom stalls are the kind I hate where you have to back up and lean over the toilet to close or open the bathroom stall.

Rich K.

Yelp
What a great place with a 60's beach vibe that was good on all avenues; food, drink, service and prices. The burgers were the best on the island. Will definitely be going back when we vacation on the island.

Illboy S.

Yelp
I'm not one to want to write a negative review but sometimes if the shoe fits. We stopped in for a snack after not visiting Poe's in years. We ordered "The sleeper" burger with the fries. The burger was subpar. They pre-make all their plates with the buns and toppings ready to go. You can see them in the kitchen as you enter. That's probably why the bun is sooo dried out. The meat was decent and the buffalo shrimp that it came with were honestly the only highlight of the meal. Unfortunately it's said too often but the fries were cold. Cold fries? C'mon man!

Taylor G.

Yelp
Poe's Tavern is known for its creative pub food with a literary twist, drawing inspiration from Edgar Allan Poe. The Buffalo shrimp tacos featured crispy shrimp tossed in a spicy Buffalo sauce, served with diced tomatoes and blue cheese slaw. I paired my tacos with their amazing potato salad. We grabbed seats on the patio and the weather was perfect with great people watching.
