Unorthodox Spices Meet Chocolate and Pastries at Intrigue’s New Capitol Hill Cafe - Eater Seattle

"Seattle continues to see still more poke with a new fast-casual spot called Poke Fresh, now open in Roosevelt. Early Yelp reviews are largely positive, with one reviewer even making the bold statement that this spot is comparable to the line-drawing 45th Stop and Shop. In addition to the expected offerings of customizable poke bowls, the restaurant also serves bingsoo, a shaved ice dessert popular in Korea." - Megan Hill

After a tiring workout, you are drawn in by the tantalizing smell drifting out the open doors. You peer inside and it appears almost empty, with clean, functional arrangements and a soft beat behind some retro Mario playing on the TV's. Tucked in the corner, 2 young professionals enjoy the most exquisite dish, hiding it like some secret, because this restaurant honestly is one. Sure this place isn't some Michellin restaurant, but it doesn't try to be and instead lives up to be a model hole in the wall restaurant that just makes sense. The food is fresh and flavorful with flavor profiles that blend well together and fresh textures that leaves your tongue wanting more. Sure the other reviews may be accurate, but I say it's disingenuous to judge raw fish an hour after it's prepared with takeout. Like, who knew that it may not be that good for you then. The owner doesn't say much, but if you come a couple times, he'll know you by name, and he would always hand deliver your food with a bow. I think that really says a lot. From $5 sandwiches to large $20 poke bowls, this place really does hit.

I'm not sure why this place has so many low ratings! The Poke Bowls are a solid value and tasty. We've been getting them every so often since August and it's always been good fish and good toppings. The Sushi rice unfortunately does always seem to be quite overcooked and mushy and more of a blob than individual grains, so I'm holding off one star for that. Yet to remember to order white rice instead and see if the texture is better. I'm not motivated to swap neighborhood poke bowl restaurants, but I do wish the rice was less mushy. Spicy Salmon was pretty spicy but not overwhelming for me as someone who isn't super tolerant of spicy - probably a 1 or 2 on your typical 5-point spiciness scale. Takeout is always very quick from time of order to pick up! The folks in the restaurant don't really say much but are friendly. That's ok with me. Restaurant has board games available but I've never seen anyone eating their meal sit-down.

Google
Poke Fresh has quickly become one of my favorite places to eat. The ingredients are always incredibly fresh, and you can taste the difference in every bite. I love how customizable the bowls are — there are so many delicious toppings and sauces to choose from. The staff is consistently friendly, helpful, and efficient, which makes the whole experience even better. Whether you’re grabbing lunch or a quick dinner, it’s always a great choice. The portions are generous, the space is clean and modern, and the flavors never disappoint. Highly recommend for anyone who loves healthy, tasty food!

Google
Probably one of the last places in Seattle you can get a good cheap meal under $10. The buy one get one menu is a solid deal and all of it tastes great. The poke is a great value, bowls start at $11 which is the cheapest I've seen in the greater Seattle area. The management/ownership is awesome, happy to have a restaurant like this in the area, its my go to spot if I'm looking for a quick meal. If you've been to Japan and miss cheap food from the grocery store or the 7-11 this is the closest you'll get to it in Seattle.

Google
Poke Fresh always delivers on quality and taste. Their ingredients are fresh and full of flavor. The team is friendly and keeps the line moving fast. It’s a perfect spot for a quick, healthy meal. Never had a bad experience here — highly recommend!

Google
Poke Fresh nails it with both food and service. The bowls are colorful, filling, and absolutely delicious. You get fresh ingredients and consistent quality every visit. The atmosphere is chill and welcoming. I keep coming back, and it never disappoints. Fresh, fast, and always satisfying — Poke Fresh is a favorite. Their toppings and sauces add amazing flavor. Staff are friendly and keep things moving smoothly. It’s perfect for lunch or dinner, solo or with friends. I always leave full and happy.

Google
There’s something special about Poke Fresh that keeps me coming back. The food is consistently fresh and delicious, and it’s clear a lot of care goes into the ingredients. You can really taste the difference. I love how easy it is to create a bowl that fits my mood — whether I want something light and refreshing or hearty and filling. The staff is super friendly and efficient, and the service is fast without feeling rushed. The atmosphere is clean, calm, and welcoming. It’s one of those places where you feel good about what you’re eating every single time.

Google
Every time I eat at Poke Fresh, it’s a fantastic experience. The ingredients are so fresh, colorful, and full of flavor. You can tell they really care about the quality of their food. The staff is attentive, friendly, and always greets you with a smile. The portions are generous, and everything tastes amazing.

Yelp
I come here for poke once a month or so, it is conveniently located and not in the heart of U District, which I pretty much avoid. The servers are always really friendly when I come in, they take my order promptly and aren't skimpy on the portions. The food always tastes and feels fresh. I like the options of toppings and mix-ins, as well as the sauces and fish options. You really can make it whatever you want! I always go heavy on the salmon, and theirs is pretty dang good! It's not the most attractive place to sit in to eat, it's very basic, but the people watching sitting at the windows is unbeatable.

Yelp
Great place that stays open late! Too many Poke places seem to close earlier than other types of restaurants. Poke Fresh is open until 1:30 AM, which is awesome! My son and I went to Poke Fresh after a Yelp search and found this place to be quite good. Parking sucks but it's like that everywhere in the U District. I did however notice the Link Light Rail Roosevelt Station is just up the street so that is a great option to avoid the parking hassle. We each got the medium sized make your own bowl which comes with 2 proteins as well as a bevy of choices for other toppings, etc. I love the variety of choices and selected the Ahi and Spicy Salmon. They allow half and half of bases like several rice varieties or greens so I got half salad greens and half brown rice. The service was great with a very nice and accommodating server. Kinda weird they played Hispanic music over the speakers for the entire restaurant but maybe the employees get their choice when working. No biggie. I'll return here one day and will likely take the light rail for convenience.

Yelp
God I love this place. The owner is so nice too which makes the food taste 10 x better. I love their classic Japanese curry.
google avatar

Yelp
Good quality, fast service, open late. A little pricey but good quality and portion. Been a few more times and recommended to folks in the area. It may be hard to communicate through the glass partition so be sure to speak clearly.

Yelp
Both the food and the service were kind of mid, not super impressed with this place. The food is pretty affordable actually (around $10 for a lot of dishes like noodle and rice bowls), but there's not a ton of substance either. For food, I ordered the spicy Ahi roll ($7) and BBQ chashu pork udon ($10). The sushi was decent but the udon had a mushy texture and the soup was just a simple soy sauce base. The service was insanely slow, as in I probably waited a good 20 mins just to order with two people ahead of me in line. I think it's kind of understandable because they seemed short-staffed and they make most of their items to order, but you would think that a poke place would have a little more hustle because the food that they make to order is just.. putting ready-to-eat ingredients together in a bowl. With the long wait and how average the food was, I definitely wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. They do have some cheap drinks and are open until 2:30am though, so maybe it's a good late night spot, but I haven't tried it for myself.

Yelp
You wouldn't know it from the outside, but this poke joint is a gem! The ingredients are fresh, the prices are decent, and the owner is a pleasure. Every time we grab poke from this place, we're glad we did.

Yelp
Such a great place! Husband and I are visiting in the area and we stumbled on this place. I had the tuna fever bowl and he had the spicy Supreme. Both were good size and very filling. Be sure to add a boba tea- we both had a fruit tea, which had chucks of fruit and plenty of boba. I'm really sad they aren't closer to me, I would be here frequently

Yelp
Reading the other reviews, I'm thinking I probably got a fresh employee. Despite the negative feedback, I noted that the apparent manager was attentive and helpful to the server that helped me. They were both very kind despite me coming in so late (around 11:45; 45 min before closing) - I was very happy to be able to visit a place in our neighborhood open at this time of night - and my food was perfectly delicious. They were accommodating when I changed my order from a small to a medium, explained to me what each add-on was (as I don't know some japanese food terms), and were very kind throughout the entire experience. I hope that whoever I checked out with has more frequent hours, as they were more than kind and accommodating to my dietary needs. Kudos to them and the manager for providing the confidence and general training to create such a great dinner for me on a late night!

Jace W.

Yelp
Came here on Sunday noon and the staff was sitting outside smoking. Came inside and clearly look unhappy. Owner is always nice and passionate but this guys attitude is just whole other level. Please make adjustment otherwise you will lose a lot of customers.

Yelp
Sadly have to confirm the tiny portions of protein in the poke bowl mentioned in previous reviews. Service was just okay, didn't really get any greeting or acknowledgement from the two workers when I walked in so I was initially a little confused who would take my order. Maybe they were tired. This place closes pretty late.
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered the California roll and Teri Mayo chicken roll off of Uber eats. By far, worst sushi I've ever had. They were for sure not fresh. Even the rice was hard. Safeway has better sushi. The Teri Mayo roll didn't even stay together. Sad that I wasted my money here, I hope you do not!

Yelp
Not sure who the employee was working today at 3:40pm on 4/15 but my boyfriend and I went here and didn't even order after how terrible of a customer service experience we had. We walked in and were the only two people in there and the one employee had both his AirPods in so I had to keep saying "hello" to grab his attention. Once I did, he didn't say a word and just blankly stared at me then shook his head in the manner as if I was bugging him and wanted to know why I was there lol. This confused me and so at first I thought maybe I missed the hours of operation sign and maybe I came in at closing and that's why this man was being a jerk. I politely said "sorry, you guys are still open right" and he then kept staring and finally shook his head yes and literally rolled his eyes. At that point I knew I no longer wanted food here and we left. I hope this person one day finds something that doesn't make him this miserable for work because this place is going to lose a lot of service because of him.

Yelp
For the price they offer, the quantity and quality was worth it. Everything tasted fresh, flavorful and met my poke needs. I got the small size and it was perfect! They put so much of each ingredient you want especially the protein and I appreciated that very much. The employees there were super nice and the place was clean and welcoming.
google avatar

Lizzie C.

Yelp
Unfortunately, The fish is not fresh It has a leathery taste to it. The rest of the items were decent but if you want fresh fish, this is not the place to go. And the portion of fish is small. Service is excellent, ambience is very clean, well lit.
google avatar

Gihani D.

Yelp
Poke was good, nothing that blew my mind away but the salmon was good quality and they had the classic toppings. They were also open late, we went around 10:30pm. However, and this is a big however, it was $20 for a small and $30 for a large poke bowl!!! WHAT?! This is the most expensive poke I've had in my life. Definitely not worth the price. Only go here if you are out of other options.

Jane N.

Yelp
Ordered delivery - large poke and soup. Greens were old and wilted, looked terrible. Probably didn't help that delivery had hot beef soup on top of poke. Soup was pretty bad too - beef was extremely fat. I could not eat any of it. Ended up throwing away poke, and have the soup for crows. They liked it, I guess.
google avatar

Constance G.

Yelp
Avoid!! Very expensive, poke is not mixed on bowl. Horrible experience. It was 30$ for a bowl of rice. The little fish we did have was not very good and the garlic shrimp appears and tastes as though it is canned mini shrimp. This quality to price is unacceptable.

Yelp
Used to be my favorite poke place in the neighborhood a couple years ago. Went in again today and I was shocked by the pricing and the amount of protein you get. I had the worst experience with the waiter, he had horrible customer service, didn't speak to me or even a smile during the entire process. After getting the food I realized the white rice that was served is extremely hot... I have to say I'm extremely disappointed and would suggest people to go somewhere for poke, there are a lot of options in the area, I personally wouldn't come back here again. Oh and I forgot to mention, the protein wasn't mixed with any of the sauce I asked for. It's super blend and disgusting.

Allison G.

Yelp
Just got my order through Uber Eats and it was $3.99 for 6 half pieces of tiny shrimp. My first experience with this place and it didn't feel like a good value for the cost. Bummed because people said about of good things about it!
google avatar

Ambrose S.

Yelp
This used to be my favorite poke place around town, and we would happily make the 18-20 minute trip for the tasty food and friendly experience. No longer. We came today, and the first thing we saw was that the prices have nearly doubled since our last visit a few months ago. Yes, prices everywhere have been going up, but $30 is pretty shocking for a poke bowl that, at best, is large 'ish'. But we were looking forward to it, so we gave it a try. The ordering experience was, frankly, upsetting. Instead of the friendly and helpful workers who've staffed the place in the past, the person working the counter today seemed impatient and withdrawn (for context, we were the only people there and we weren't complaining or anything like that). On top of the huge upfront price, everything is rationed, with big upcharges for extras. Large bowl? 3 toppings. Want a fourth? Add $3.99. That's a lot of cash for some chopped cucumber, so the end product has a lot less of the joyful variety that makes poke so fun. It's the same story with sauces and the sprinkled bits at the end (2-4, depending on bowl size). To top it off, when you get to the end, there are signs up offering you significant discounts for leaving a (presumably positive) review on a few sites. While I guess that's a way to counteract the cost, it feels pretty icky. In the end, the bowl was still tasty (which got them to 2 stars), but with fewer toppings, less good than it once was. The cost was unreasonable, and the experience unpleasant and upsetting. I think this was our last visit.

Jeremy T.

Yelp
Went in as a spur-of-the-moment dinner choice, would not come back. Rude server: someone one from the back came out front after a few minutes and had to ask if I was here to order something before he would acknowledge my presence. Tiny portion sizes: server would fill the scoops of protein barely half full, not worth the written price at all. Choosing sides: server seemed frustrated and rolled his eyes when I had to look back at the list of what side and sauce options are available. The only saving grace is that avocado wasn't extra, but overall I would not spend my money here.
google avatar

Alicia L.

Yelp
$20 for a small poke bowl and $25 for a medium?? Robber barons. It's good and fresh but not $25 good. This is definitely the most I've ever paid for poke. The sauces are excellent and the fish is fresh, and the owner gives a good portion of the sides, but I'd still rather pay $15 elsewhere.

aj p.

Yelp
I used to say that it's hard to find bad Asian food or bad seafood in Seattle... used to. The good The flavors are unique for poke. That's it. The bad Let's start with the pricing. It's fine for Seattle except that with other places, you get what you pay for. Here I was appalled at the amount of protein, or lack thereof given. I felt like I paid $20 for a big bowl of rice. Then there was the service. I almost felt bad for the person behind the counter. He clearly did not want to be there and his attitude reflected it. I didn't know someone could be so unhappy taking money.
google avatar

Angela P.

Yelp
this was my first time and they had a bogo sale going for sushi rolls and now i know why...it was disgusting and SO disappointin. you'll see for yourself in the photos :(
google avatar

Evan T.

Yelp
Outstanding poke bowls. Lots of good variety and choice, spicy tuna is my favorite. The food was prepared quickly. Truly enjoyed this place and will be coming back.
google avatar

Austin J.

Yelp
Fast to order, quality food, nice and clean atmosphere. The build a bowl gives great portion size for the $ amount.
google avatar

Lisa A.

Yelp
I used to love the place but I cannot understand why they have increased the price to almost $20 for small (like 25% increase, which is higher than the current inflation rate). To make matters worse, now they limit the number of the toppings (previously unlimited). The previous price was already kinda expensive for a poke but still I loved the place as they allow us to put as many toppings as we wanted and the poke was filling. Also now they don't mix the poke as they used to do. The selection of the sauces is meh (some of my favorites have gone) and the topping selection is to be honest weird for me -- they removed some of nice (and authentic Japanese or Asian) toppings and added weird toppings like pineapples. It's sad that I've lost my favorite poke place but I don't think I will go back -- I'm not happy to pay $25 for okay level poke.
google avatar

Hampton T.

Yelp
This use to be my favorite poke place and I would grab lunch here a few times per month. I went this week and it now costs $20 for a small, $25 for a medium and $30 for a large?!? This is a huge price increase from a few months ago. This is insane for a lunch option, as it was already a pushing the expensive side for lunch before these increases. Not only did the price increase, the quality seems to have been degraded significantly. You use to be able to mix your poke / sauces / etc.. in a bowl before putting it in the bowl. Now they just have poke (some premixed in sauce it looked like) with a few sauces on the side they will put on top. Options of toppings seemed to also be reduced. Unfortunately I think I will have to take this poke option out of my lunch rotation unless it reverts back.
google avatar

Keshun B.

Yelp
Great food and filling but the workers seem like they're out of it. Hope they have better days!
google avatar

Roxanna Z.

Yelp
This place is nearby so we wanted to give it a try, but unfortunately we couldn't even eat the food. We NEVER waste food but this went into compost after a few bites. The biggest problem was that the fish was not fresh and was off-putting in taste. Tried hard to eat it so we don't waste food but at the end of the day, it's not worth the risk of potentially getting sick. Not sure if we got a bad batch, but overall really unfortunate experience. Other comments: The fish was also not fillet well and the salmon had a ton of grey on it. The masago that was mixed into the salad was still frozen. Portion size was decent.

Monique L.

Yelp
inedible!!! Medium poke bowl with 5 very small pieces of tuna? (At least that's what it was supposed to be) A spoonful of Imitation crab salad, which was not described as imitation. Also ordered chicken teriyaki, which the meat tasted rancid! The photos provided by the business is not a accurate representation of the dish that was served. Over $50 and after 2 bites had to throw it out!
google avatar

Emily H.

Yelp
Stopped by for a lunch to-go. Great topping options, fish seemed pretty fresh. Good sauces!! A little overpriced compared to some other poke places I've been to before. But definitely tasty.
google avatar

LK B.

Yelp
Aw shucks, I hate to be writing this. This used to be my favorite poke place but it seems they've made some changes. For one, they hiked the prices. I get it with inflation and all that. However, on top of charging more, they limit you on the number of toppings now. Whaaaaat?! I also noticed some quality and taste changes. I typically get more-or-less the same bowl. Tonight it tasted different and I got an upset stomach afterwards. Such a disappointment. I can't see myself coming back anytime soon. Why, Poke Fresh, why?!? Now I have to find a new poke place.

Elijah C.

Yelp
My experience was amazing! The owner himself served me and my friend at 1am with Joy and Professionalism! Not to mention the food quality was outstanding. I highly recommend checking this awesome establishment out.
google avatar

Justin H.

Yelp
Never seen an employee with this kind of service in my life. Immediately after walking in the only guy there glared at us with the most upset face I've ever seen. He then proceeded to just slam the scoops and bowl anytime we said what we wanted. My girlfriend asked which fish was the one on the menu and he just angrily pointed and try to rush us. Whoever owns this place has to fire the guy immediately. What a joke, I can only imagine if he showed this attitude to someone with less patience. The food was not worth it. Basically 10 pieces of fish for $15. I essentially paid for rice with lots of sauce and some onions.

Aaron S.

Yelp
Good udon soup! Nice flavor. Sushi was good too though rice was not as fresh as the soup. Service was quick. The ambiance was nice, I like the decor.
google avatar

Tim M.

Yelp
It's really good! They've got more protein and sauce options than I've ever seen in a poke restaurant before, and they deliver until extremely late!

Devon M.

Yelp
This place used to be really great but now they add very little fish and the staff are not very helpful.
google avatar

Kristen K.

Yelp
Decent poke bowls. Definitely "mainland poke," but I probably wouldn't mind ordering from them again since they give you good proportions. They give you a pretty good amount of fish; more than some other poke bowl places. Unfortunately, the poke didn't taste legit -- more like unseasoned sashimi, regardless of the various sauces I ordered with it. At least the fish tasted fresh. They have lots of free sides and toppings that you can order with your bowl. All of them tasted pretty fresh, and I was very pleasantly surprised to see that they had spicy cod roe (mentaiko), one of my favorite foods. I'm not a fan of their plastic packaging. (Not just to be environmentally friendly.) The poke bowl sure looks nice when you get it, but the tall-and-narrow plastic bowl makes it hard for you to dig your chopsticks to the bottom. This forces you to eat most of the toppings first and you're left with plain greens or rice underneath. (I imagine it is even harder using a fork.) I also managed to cut one finger on the plastic cover. Overall, I think that Poke Fresh is one of the better poke spots I've tried in Seattle, but my quest for the perfect poke bowl continues...
google avatar

Stephanie N.

Yelp
Super fresh and lots of variety! While looking at photos the portion seems on the smaller end. But, I was pleasantly surprised. The service was quick and staff were very friendly. We ended up going back up for the oreo bingsu which was the best decision for the night! It was sooo good!
google avatar

Opal D.

Yelp
Wonderful portions, nice staff, cleanly restaurant, easy to find *metered* street parking, restrooms, accepts cards. Only compliant is that the wasabi sauce was really mild--couldn't really taste it.
google avatar

Connie W.

Yelp
Poke Fresh is my goto for both poke and bingsoo. The Poke has a generous portion size for the price and a good selection of toppings, including avocado for no additional fee. It's not necessarily the most authentic poke, since the fish is not marinated beforehand. It is more of a Chipotle style of poke, but it is delicious nonetheless. The matcha and red bean bingsoo is great. Out of the flavors I tried here, this one is my favorite. The ice is finely shaved and there is a good amount of matcha. Be careful getting it to-go since it melts very quickly if you don't eat it immediately.

Nolan W.

Yelp
Great food, but had to deal with an extremely hostile employee who would not make eye contact with me.
google avatar

Ryan R.

Yelp
We love the food here. Service is always great. Spicy salmon and tuna are both great.

Jason M.

Yelp
The person put tips on my take-out order without my consent!!!!!! Only found out about this after I left the store
google avatar

Christy K.

Yelp
OH MAMA Thank goodness for Poke Fresh and them offering takeout bingsoo during the covid. With milkie milkie being closed, I didn't know where I could get my craving on. My first time in, and boy I will be back soon. The portions are very generous. Impressed with the small bingsoo, I shared it with my partner. Generous helpings of red bean too! We both got a medium poke bowl (2 proteins) and it exceeded expectations. The spicy tuna and the salmon were properly marinated. Salmon was perfect size melt-in-your-mouth deliciousness. Soo good. They also have masago AND edamame AND spicy cod roe as free toppings. I don't know anywhere else in Seattle that does this, and I am 100% here for it. The portions for the medium are also very generous. I'm a fairly big eater and I was full with a little less than half left. I did have half the bingsoo before, but I'm still pretty impressed with the portions. Generous fish, enough to curate the perfect bite every time. In fact, every bite of the bingsoo and the poke had the right portions of everything. Very impressed. And generous toppings. The crispy onion adds the delicious crunch, and their house sauce is fantastic. I got my bowl with half salad half rice, and the sauce went so well with both. Overall very impressed. The only thing I'm a tiny bit bummed about is that it looks like they forgot the avocado I ordered (it's not extra! Whaaaat!?), but the rest of the meal exceeded my expectations, so I'm still extremely happy. Will be back soon!

Payman F.

Yelp
It was my first time ordering food from this restaurant. The staff were nice and friendly and it is an advantage that the restaurant works until late hours. However I am not very satisfied with the food I ordered. I ordered spicy tuna poke ($9.99 Spicy Tuna Bowl). The quality was ok but it definitely wasn't worth the price. I could barely find tuna fish in my meal and it mostly contained white rice. It also didn't have green chopped onions on top if that as it said in the menu. With the price I paid, I could get much better options in other places.

Yvonne S.

Yelp
Pretty good of food portion. And they have plenty of choice of the ingredients. Will be Chaco if I stop by again
google avatar

Tom L.

Yelp
$25 for a bowl ridiculous. Prices aren't listed where you order. Bad business ethics. Sure you can rip someone off once but chances are they won't come back. Good luck not going out of business.
