NYC-Based Pokéworks Will Open in Metairie With Poke Burritos and More | Eater New Orleans

"As a homegrown entrant in New Orleans' poke scene, Poke Loa opened its first shop on Magazine Street in February 2017 and later added an Old Metairie outpost in October, marking New Orleans' more recent embrace of the poke wave." - Stephanie Carter

The New Poke Loa Has a Tiki Bar | Eater New Orleans

"When the Metairie location opened in October, I noticed they added a mochi bar (ice cream wrapped in pounded sticky rice), which the Poke Loa team began offering there alongside the same build-your-own poke format of mixed greens, rice, chopped raw fish, marinades, and toppings." - Stephanie Carter

Google
First time trying it and it was sooo good. Don’t be nervous about the quality of the raw fish because it was very fresh and tasty. I got spicy tuna, crab salad, and salmon as my proteins and it was delicious.

Google
I used to love ordering poke bowls from here, but over the last few months I feel like though they are constantly out of things that I order. It doesn’t tell you beforehand that they’re out of it so you can still order it. You will just get a call or a message telling you that they’re out of it and what would you like instead… one time I even got all the way to the place to pick up my order and then was told that they didn’t have one of the items that I ordered. It just feels very inconsistent to me, but at the same time they’re always out of things. I feel as though if you are out of something, it shouldn’t be available on the website to order. However, I’m not going to stop going because I love a good poke bowl! It’s just a tad frustrating.

Google
Great service and fun Pokémon bowl! Perfect spot for a quick meal and good chat. 100% recommend!

Viviana S.

Google
This was my first time here , my friends always go there and i was like i have to try it . Amazing !! i got a regular bowl tuna and chicken super good i got soo full with the regular bowl 😂👍🏼 so if your thinking between regular or 3 scoops go for regular , price is a little high but not bad for what your getting soo coming back for it 😍

Michael B.

Google
Poke loa hooked me the first time I went. Tastes fresh every time. Great selection of toppings, and the staff will stuff these bowls to capacity. 3 scoop bowl is guaranteed to be two meals for me.

Google
Ive been looking for one of these places s8nce I left Miami. They have a make your own poke / raw fish bowl option, but with other options. They have multiple sauces / oils you can add as well. Fish eggs can also be added. Then I have to google eel sauce. Not sure what that is. Have to say, Im pleasantl surprised by timhis place

Liron S.

Google
i got here before closing and they had the door closed earlier then advertised that’s fine if you wanna close early don’t advertise 9 but be closed before that i just drove 20 min for nothing

Google

Yelp
I got a Santo bowl and it was delicious! The kimchi was okay. The service was nice and everyone was really sweet. The establishment was very clean and easily accessable

Yelp
It's like the Subway of poké! The best thing about it is being able to build your own bowl with all of your favorites! Crab-shrimp-tuna? Rice or greens? How about both? Mango, ponzu, soy or sriracha aioli? I'll take it all and hastily inhale it, all the while knowing I'm eating better here than had I made a sandwich with processed meats and stacked on carb heavy bread.

Yelp
Love Poke Loa! So good. So sexy. I stop by at the Metairie Rd location every time I come in town. Always a nice experience here. Shout out to Henry for going above and beyond

Yelp
Great food, great service! The folks at Poke Loa are friendly and helpful. After having lived in NOLA and moved away, when you come back to visit you look for those comforting reminders. Poke Loa is one of those for me! There menu has changed a little over time, but the basic Poke Bowl items you like are there. Check them out!!
google avatar

Huyen N.

Yelp
Basic poke bowls. It was filled with more base and toppings of your choice than amount of proteins. Sauces were ok, not as tasty. It can get expensive depending on the addons. Service was friendly though.
google avatar

Baswana M.

Yelp
Ordered a king bowl for lunch and the avocado was dark and rotten. There was brown liquid in the bottom of the bowl that was mostly from the rotting spring mix. They charge us so much for ingredients that are supposed to be fresh and simple. When I called to speak with someone about the rotten bowl, no one answered. I left a message and haven't heard back. It is always pretty empty in this particular restaurant. I hope it's not because of the quality of the food. If so, I got the memo too late. Inspect your bowls people!

Yelp
This location sits at the back of the BIG Strip mall off Metairie Road near the train tracks. My bank is also in this mall. Since this place opened running my errands is a little more pleasant. Thanks Poke Loa!! Poke is like if sushi and salad and Subway had a baby; a fresh, light, delicious baby. You start with a bowl of rice, or mixed baby greens, (or, recently added Zoodles), put some raw fish on top with your selection of add-ons, veggies, sauces and crunchies. You end up with a bowl of yumminess that doesn't bloat your belly and instead, leaves you feeling like you've done your body some good. Fresh. Light. Raw. Veggie. Goodness. The clean, bare decor of this location complements is clean fresh food perfectly. We love the selection of local kombucha drinks. This place is great for eat-in or take-out, although the parking lot can be a little crowded at times.

Yelp
Yummy food, great service!!!! I was in town and I've heard great things about Poke Loa so I decided to stop in and Marilyn served me. She explained everything on the menu with a great smile and positive attitude. She had lots of patience with me and my dietary needs. I would definitely be returning when I come back into town. Thanks Marilyn and Poke Loa!

Dylan_08 L.

Yelp
I went there around 8 today and the store was empty. The guys working there were really cool and gave me amazing service. The bowl was also really good and I recommend adding crab salad to y'alls bowls. Really good service and good management. Will go there again
google avatar

Arielle F.

Yelp
Very friendly service and willing to help build your bowl. Very clean and food is fresh.
google avatar

Kassidy D.

Yelp
I ordered the regular size build your own bowl. You get to pick a protein (I chose shrimp) but I saw there was an option for no protein. As the base I chose brown rice. You also get to choose different sauces and add ins. Avocado was only $1 extra. All in all I think it's a good deal for around $15. Very filling. If you've never had it picture sushi but in a bowl. They are also offering curbside pick up.

Yelp
I had to find somewhere that I could grab a quick lunch, but I wanted something tasty. This worked quite well. This Poke Loa is located on Metairie Road and shares it's parking lot with other establishments. I had no trouble finding a spot. Once inside I was immediately addressed warmly and asked if I needed help ordering. This is a counter service, build it yourself, have it your way - place. They also offer a few standard options. I went with a rice bowl and added yummy things like, tuna, snow crab, edamame, seaweed salad, and fried onion rings. OMG! Heaven! There is inside and outside seating, and since it was a gorgeous day, I sat outside. It was a great experience and fit the bill. Speaking of the bill, I find the prices high, but I love the food and know I'll be back, but not as often as I'd like.

Kaitlyn V.

Yelp
We decided to give this location a try for the first time instead of our usual spot. My son had picked what he all wanted in his bowl and one of the employee had a comment about it. He thought we didn't hear him but told another employee my son was weird for selecting what he wanted. So we decided to eat our food on the table outside. We walked outside by 805pm and one of the employee quickly locked the door behind us. We actually overheard the 3 employees screaming out loud happily to close. As for the food, the poke bowls were just basic. The protein portion was little. The toppings weren't fresh and had little variety to select. The sauces lacked flavor. Our food weren't great so we couldn't finish them. The employees weren't friendly and gave us the worst experience. I would not refer this spot to family and friends.
google avatar

Yelp
Definitely the fast food of the poke craze. This place is serving food that fully earns its "meh" rating. Convenient curbside pick up but the food is not what you expect. The crab salad is a weird shred of imitation crab with little flavor. The soup had rice noodles with a splash of zoodles, which is the opposite of what I ordered. It is good soup, bc you can choose your proteins, but nothing special as far a flavors go. Seaweed salad looks fake like it's been dyed green. Kimchi was decent. Free parking, but I won't go back.
google avatar

Rhonda M.

Yelp
Just ok....no pineapples at this location? Really?! I ordered via door dash, and the Ingredients were fresh yet lukewarm? It's only a 10 min drive. $39 down the drain!

Lauren C.

Yelp
we choose poke loa quite often as a lunch choice. always fresh, quality installment ingredients and always delicious!! we will be back of course!

Yelp
Running errands and I was starving + craving a poke bowl. Luckily Yelp helped me figure out that I wasn't that far from the Metry location of Poke Loa. Even though this is a big shopping center, everyone was there so parking was a bit tight. This location is small and doesn't have much interior seating and only about 4 outside tables, luckily one freed up for me to eat. The staff was great. And the restaurant was clean just no as charming as the uptown location... but it's a strip mall. So they were out of all the flavors of aqua fresca. Color me sad. I got a 3 scoop protein bowl with lettuce (to offset all the Christmas cookies). And here's where I got sad. The lettuce wasn't great, wilty and some pieces tasted off. And then some of the fish had an ammonia smell. Very offputting. Because I was starving and paid $$ for my bowl, I took the risk and ate it anyway. And it was fine. I finished about 1/2 of it (so I wasn't a starving beast) and then got it home and added some balsamic vinegar to hide the smell. And ate the rest. I was fine so it definitely wasn't bad, just smelly. Maybe it was time of year or just a bad day. Would stop in again, but would try to not be ravenous and more aware of the ingredients.

Yelp
Super disappointed! So with a small bowl, you get 2 scoops of protein and a large you get 3 scoops of protein. Have you ever notice how SMALL those scoops of protein are?? It's literally like 5 pieces of fish per scoop. Anyways I ordered a large because I knew a small portion wasn't going to be enough. And honestly , even ordering a large portion , there still wasn't enough fish! They just pack the bowl with rice. When the girl started to scoop my protein, I watched as 3 pieces of tuna fall out of my scoop, and she didn't even replace it in my bowl! I basically paid for a large portion of fish and got a small portion. They are so stingy! The only way I felt like I could get the most out of it was by getting every single topping they had, which I did. Ever since they opened more than 1 location, they became so basic. I rather a different poke place.
google avatar

Paige S.

Yelp
Don't order online because this location has absolutely no idea how to read and follow directions. Not to mention they barely add any toppings. Basically paid $14 for a bowl of rice noodles and a swirl of aioli. Came here twice and both times were a disappointing experience.
google avatar

Michelle Q.

Yelp
They have soup now! It was so tasty. You can opt to put shrimp in the coconut broth. I suggest to also add noodles. It's a huge bowl, and costs around $11. It is so worth it though!

Sara M.

Yelp
Pretty sub-par poke overall. Seaweed salad was gross and unlike any I have seen before. The sauces were too heavy and lacked flavor.
google avatar

Debra P.

Yelp
I stopped here at Poke Loa out of curiosity and hunger pangs in my tummy. I should add that I'm trying eat healthier these days. I definitely satisfied my curiosity with the visit and my tummy too. It's basically Sushi in a bowl and I'm a big fan of sushi. This was pleasantly different especially with the added greens. I enjoyed my meal and will return to try another dish.
google avatar

Alyssa M.

Yelp
Incredibly disappointed with this order. The 'Thai Coconut Curry Soup' literally had NO rice Noodles and I ordered two orders as to make a larger soup- and literally there were 10 strands of rice noodles to share between two. The image on their web is super different from the image below and I am only writing to save others from potential disappointment, CHEAP!
google avatar

Faith A.

Yelp
Love Poke Loa! If you are not into raw sushi then this probably isn't your place. They do have cooked shrimp and octopus so ya have options, but the raw tuna and salmon is where it's at my friends. Now it's not exactly sushi but a DIY sushi bowl if you will. You choose your base of rice or greens, pick your protein, toppings and sauces. The possibilities are endless! The fish tasted great and very fresh. The crab salad was not drenched in mayo, another perk. It's a great place to grab a quick lunch if you are in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Tricia G.

Yelp
I am addicted to this new poke trend and glad to see more of these popping up! Delicious and fresh ingredients. I ordered a tofu poke bowl through Yelp (yay for convenience!) and my food was ready on time. The crunchy wontons add nice texture. I always get the seaweed salad and ginger for extra flavor. I would have liked siracha but it didn't come in my to go bag. Be sure to ask for it.
google avatar

Jessica D.

Yelp
Poke Loa has solved many dillemas for me. I'm hungry. They have food. I need a place to eat that's close to school. They're a few minutes drive away. I love sushi but hate trying to shove huge pieces of roll in my mouth. They put all the lovely sushi ingredients I enjoy in a bowl. No more trying to bite into a roll and hoping the contents don't fall all over my face. Thanks to Poke Lao and the amazing culinary stew that is Hawaiian cuisine, I can have my lunch and eat it too! =) Joking aside, this is the perfect spot to get a quick lunch. There is a large bowl with three scoops of protein of your choice and a small bowl with two scoops. You can put on as many toppings as you like, and only the avocado and crab are extra. The base is white or brown rice, lettuce, or a mix of the two. The first few times I came in I just got the rice, which is an excellent option if you are very hungry. I won't lie. I put a ridiculous amount of toppings on mine, and the person serving me very politely tries not to look shocked (I'm kind of a small person. ), but I can see them holding back! Everyone who works here is very helpful and professional, and the space itself is bright and clean. Parking can get a little competitive around lunch time, but I always manage to find a spot.

Ashley P.

Yelp
This is my second time walking into this establishment and not greeted by the worker. But as soon as someone of a different race walked in, of course she was greeted! I will not support a business who doesn't treat EVERY customer the same!!!!
google avatar

Katherine B.

Yelp
Super impressed. I came in to get a to-go order. I was somewhat familiar with the idea of what to order and how to do. The gentleman behind the counter was so nice to explain what were my options and even gave me sample of the fish eggs to try. The food was also good and I am glad they had the option of zucchini noodles instead of rice. Food is filling and healthy. Definitely will be back.
google avatar

Victoria J.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of the Poke Loa on Magazine and I think I love this one more. Same great food and service. Much better parking. The inside is a little smaller, but they make the most of their space. The Poke is still served fresh and yummy with tons off add ons. It's location is convenient and PARKING. PARKING. PARKING. There is lots of free and easy parking compared to the original location. It still has some outdoor seating, which is nice. Ignore the construction going on right now, you can still get in and get your favorites.
google avatar

Brian O.

Yelp
Very nice place (clean and tidy), very pleasant servers, very nice dishes, good prices, but I am unable to get over the feel that it's a raw fish Subway shop. Ugh! Decent to visit if you are in a rush.
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
We ordered a group delivery order from here for lunch while working and it was delicious! I am not usually or a huge sushi/ raw fish fan, but my co-workers suggested it. Ordering online for delivery was easy and the restaurant was very accurate in filling the large order. I built my own Poke bowl with two scoops of shrimp and added both avocado and crab with rice noodles. It was delicious! The ingredients were fresh and the flavors were bright. It was the perfect lunch as it is starting to get warmer out. As someone who is typically intimidated by this type of food figuring out my order was simple. The bowl was a huge filling portion and did not disappoint. I can't wait to eat here again.
google avatar

Jai ..

Yelp
Awesome poke bowls and everything is fresh. Sometimes the employees seem a bit tired/not so excited while you're ordering but they're generally friendly otherwise. I would usually get all spicy tuna but have tried the shrimp, regular tuna (when they ran out of spicy tuna ) and salmon. When I commented to the owner once about being disappointed due to driving 20 minutes and not having spicy tuna available - he went out of his way to accommodate me. Definitely the best poke place!
google avatar

Daniel Z.

Yelp
Just as good as the one Uptown! Best poke so far in the city is at Poke Loa. Got free Miso cause it was Monday.
google avatar

Rachel D.

Yelp
I love the concept Poke Loa has mastered, however I do not love the customer service at the Metairie location. It seems like every time you visit this location there is a consistency issue. The rice is overcooked, the greens are wilted, the toppings are a mess, etc. Also, the atmosphere is sort of dreary. The team behind the counter is not friendly & seems to always either be eating in front of guests or playing on their cell phones in front of guests. Despite the poor things of this location, the spicy tuna is amazing. The crab salad is also very tasty and I love the assorted sauces you can choose from to customize your bowl. Also, the large parking lot is a plus compared to Magazine Street's parking situation.
google avatar

Alyson P.

Yelp
If you've never had a Poke bowl before, it is essentially just an open faced sushi roll. The fish is very fresh and the portions are fair with the prices! This Poke Loa is just like the one located on Magazine, but this location doesn't have the brightness of their other location. I love the spicy tuna and crab salad they have though! I do have a minor complaint...I've been to this location twice, and both times I've been there they gave me a very brown avocado. It's not too big of a deal, but if they would just squeeze lime on it, that might help. I would probably still come back, and not get an avocado!

Yelp
I literally crave this place multiple times a week. It's becoming a true addiction. If you haven't heard of poke, just think of it as a Chipotle model, but for sushi. You create a Poke bowl by picking the type of fish you want, toppings, and sauces. So. Good. If you don't like raw fish, poke is not for you! I've been to both the uptown and Old Metairie locations. Both are very clean and have the same choices. One thing I would like to say about the Old Metairie location. I've gotten there a little after 8:00 several times. Every time, they've already started cleaning up. It's hard to see the variety of toppings they have when everything is already in the storage buckets and it changes the overall experience. If you like sushi, check out this place. It's the only poke place I've found in New Orleans!
google avatar

Damon W.

Yelp
Let me preface this by saying that I am a big fan of the Poke Loa on Magazine St; however, my first experience at the Metairie location was quite the disappointment. The two main issues I had with my dining experience was with poor service and their consistency. Service: The service at this location did not seem up to par compared to the service at the Magazine street location. The staff seemed confused about several of their food items and did not seem to be trained about the food portion sizes (more on that later). As an example, I asked about whether or not the crab meat was real or imitation and was informed that it was real crab meat. However, I noticed that the crab meat had the red stripe down the middle indicating that the crab meat was clearly imitation. Though not a big deal, it gives you the feeling that the staff is not well trained. Consistency: The main issue I had with this establishment was the consistency of their food portions. My girlfriend and I ordered almost the exact same thing, maybe only differing by 1 item, but the portions that each of us received were vastly different. Though my poke bowl was packed to the brim, my girlfriend received about 40% less food in her bowl compared to mine; yet we had both ordered large bowls. I was still charged for 2 large bowls at the checkout. I will admit that this is partially my fault since I did not pay close attention to the portion sizes before I paid; however, I do believe that one should be able to assume that two identical orders will contain roughly the same amount of food. Overall: My first experience at this location was very poor; however, I do understand that new restaurants do usually experience some issues when they first open up. I plan to revisit them in a few months to see if they have resolved some of their issues and will post updates when I return.

Yelp
This 2nd location. has been open for a while. I have eaten here several time. Its new go to place for Fridays.
google avatar

Monica L.

Yelp
Poke wasn't bad, regular sized bowls are a good size for the price. The zoodles are a nice twist. Was a bit disappointed that they didn't offer any Wasabi, and also felt like their marinade selection was limited. Miso soup was waaay too salty. Good Agua frescas though. Will probably be back,.

Sha S.

Yelp
My salmon bowls are decent but the staff was sorta short and rude when I was ordering like I was bothering her that I came in. I'll still come back hopefully get a better staff member.
google avatar

Cari Lane T.

Yelp
This was my first time trying the poke bowl. It was amazing. The fish was very fresh and the toppings were great. The sauces were really good too. I am obsessed with poke bowls now. Yummy. Would definitely recommend this place.

Z A.

Yelp
A bit expensive for the poke, but the portions (aside from the actual seafood), taste, variety, and service are all great. The restaurant is clean. I didn't notice any food poisoning like the others mentioned. I went in during the afternoon and there were only 2 other customers there. The portions of the fish were kind of small like others said though.

Catalina R.

Yelp
I usually come here for the gluten free options but I'm no longer going to give money to a place that allows their employees to have such terrible attitudes. I asked for extra aioli and this is what I was given - a bowl of mayonnaise. I'm really not the pickiest eater but couldn't even take more than one bite after trying to mix it in. Rude and lazy. I had ordered it for delivery and all the fish was warm when I received it too. I've ordered from here enough times before to know it was sitting out much longer than usual. (whoever made this was working around 1pm Nov 5 on Metairie Rd)
google avatar

Antonia H.

Yelp
This is my 1st experience with poke and I was brought here by a few friends on a weekend. There was a short wait line but the staff handled their business and product very well. It was clear that 1 of the line attendants was training another but he made sure that our orders were correct and I felt he had positive control over his trainee. I was absolutely away with how amazing and delicious my bowl was. I order a small salmon bowl with white rice, ponzu sauce, avocado, crab salad, wonton strips and onion. The food was absolutely delicious and very filling. I would absolutely recommend this location again.
google avatar

Anh N.

Yelp
The quinoa was unusually dry and after mixing, everything was so cold! Probably better with sushi rice!
google avatar

Liesl Z.

Yelp
When this place first opened in Old Metairie, I was hesitant to try it, but I'm glad I did. It's pretty much sushi in a bowl. Everything is fresh, and the place is clean.
google avatar

Patrick R.

Yelp
I've long been a fan of Poke Loa, and I'm so happy that they're finally expanding to Metairie! The first time I went there it felt exactly like the Magazine location, which is exactly what I was hoping for. Everything was great, from the consistently good food, to the service, to the ambiance. I usually get either the King Loa bowl or the Spicy Tuna/Salmon bowl. The staff was super helpful, and most of all, quick. I was in and out in 5 minutes even with a pretty long line. Overall very good experience. Next I need to try the CBD location!
google avatar

Anawin K.

Yelp
Came to check out their second location after I heard that it recently opened. My girlfriend and I each got the King Loa bowl. It comes with 4 scoops of protein of your choosing. I think it normally comes with 2 scoops of salmon and 2 of tuna, but we got 2 scoops of salmon, 1 scoop of octopus, and 1 scoop of tuna. It also comes with a variety of other toppings that includes avocado, crabmeat, and seaweed salad. The King Loa bowl costs $15, but I think it was the most worth it bowl here in my opinion. The location is quite small compared to the Magazine St location. Seating is quite limited inside. I wish they had more tables instead of long bar tables. They were 4 tables to sit outside. Weather was great so we decided to sit outside. Other than the limited seating, I definitely recommend this place. Definitely a must try and will be back. It is great to have a poke place in the Metairie area!
