Ever since experiencing the wonder that is Poke Bowl (https://www.yelp.com/biz/poke-bowl-philadelphia-3), poke is something that I have been craving on the regular. So when I saw that a poke restaurant was opening up in Ardmore I was all in for giving it a try. Especially when I sampled some delicious tuna poke during a neighborhood Japanese festival. Since that point, I've been able to give PokeOno a few tries, and overall I've been impressed with the quality of what they have to offer.
In comparing the two poke experiences that I've had thus far Bowl dishes out the more variety of ingredients, while Ono dishes them out at a higher quality of ingredients and has more signature bowls to offer. While it would be good to see things like octopus and crab available on their protein list, Ono still manages to make some solid bowls. First, you choose between white or brown rice or mixed greens for your base; then you select a protein like salmon, tofu, tuna, or shrimp. Add in sauces like wasabi shoyu or citrus ponzu; and toppings like avocado, sweet onion, wasabi peas, edamame, shredded nori, and then some, and you're able to create some pretty tasty and plentiful custom bowls.
But if you have a hard time choosing between so many options, you can always go with a safe and grab one of their signature bowls that are inspired by sushi classics. The Californication is like a shrimp California roll that adds a spicy twist with wasabi shoyu. meanwhile, the Citrus Salmon goes in a sweeter direction with ponsu, edamame, and cucumber. But the best of the bunch by my book is the Spicy Tuna that combines ahi tuna with spicy aioli, crispy onion, and avocado.
