Pokéworks Heads for SoMa with Poke Burritos and Bowls | Eater SF

"Coming to SoMa's 50 Fremont Center this December, Pokéworks — a New York–based chain with 25 North American locations (including one other Bay Area spot in Mountain View) — is opening its first San Francisco outpost in collaboration with Top Chef alumnus Sheldon Simeon. It's a build-your-own poke operation offering bowls over kale noodles, sushi rice, brown rice, or quinoa; poke as a burrito wrapped in nori; or as a salad with romaine." - Janelle Bitker

I’m very disappointed with the takeout service. The lady who helped me refused to modify my order when I asked to add a base to my large bowl, saying it couldn’t be changed. Fine—but the large bowl I received was half empty, which made it even more frustrating. I also wish there were an option not to leave a tip, especially when the service didn’t accommodate a simple request. It shouldn’t be so difficult to make a quick change before payment. Overall, disappointing experience.

Delicious poke, the OG poke with ahi tuna was really delicious. It's a poke specialty restaurant that's good for lunch at a reasonable price. It's nice that you can make your own poke by combining it the way you want, and it's also good that they have recommended poke for those who have trouble combining it. The staff are professional and friendly.

Google
Thank you Fernando! You are the best! Pokeworks is hands down one of my favorite poke spots — it always hits the spot, especially on a busy work week when I need something fresh, delicious, and satisfying. I have to give a special shoutout to Fernando, who always makes the experience even better! He’s the absolute BEST — so kind, welcoming, and genuinely sweet. His attention to detail and warm energy make every visit such a treat. Thank you, Fernando, and Michael for always going above and beyond. Highly recommend Pokeworks — amazing food + even better service!

Google
Dishonest business, paid $21 for a Large bowl and it’s half empty, the staff are clearly directed by the owner to serve smaller portions, my first and last time here

It is delicious and the staff is super kind, specially Fernando! If you’re in a hurry and want to eat healthy this is your option.

Update: 4/10/2024 I went to Pokeworks again because if there’s one place to satisfy my Poke cravings, it’s Pokeworks! This time, as promised, they gave me a free meal to make up for the slip up last time. Spoke to the manager and he was so awesome. Really made my day! Based on how Pokeworks has handled this situation, I’m changing my ratings to 5 stars because they deserve it. This is what you call good customer service and this is what you call a really good poke bowl. I’m definitely coming back more often now! ____________________ I’m a frequent customer at Pokeworks and today they dropped the ball. Really disappointing. 1. Fish was fresh but the portion size has reduced SIGNIFICANTLY. Fine. 2. But then when we moved on to the other ingredients, there was so little of them! As you can see, I got the seaweed salad but they barely gave enough to fit my whole spoon. Even other ingredients like the hijiki seaweed, onions, green onions were extremely disappointing in terms of portion size. 3. I specifically asked for no chili flakes but your service staff didn’t hear me and rushed to add chili flakes anyway. If you wanna charge higher than average prices, you gotta live up to that standard. I’m so disappointed today because this was definitely not worth the money.

I stopped by for lunch at Pokeworks SF and tried the vegan poke bowl with Impact Tuna and kale noodles for the first time. Substituting rice for kale noodles was a game-changer—it paired perfectly with the delicious plant-based tuna. The sustainable protein option tasted fantastic, and the ability to customize with a variety of flavorful sauces made the meal even better. Highly recommend this spot for anyone looking for an incredible plant-based dining experience!

Cienna R.

Google
Great quick and healthy lunch! I had a build your own bowl with kale noodles and the vegan "Impact" tuna and the lilikoi green tea, both were well balanced, flavorful, and reminded me of Hawaii. I loved the vegan tuna as a more authentic vegan poke option than tofu, and the service and outdoor seating made it a really enjoyable experience!

Yelp
Stopped by here last minute after a road trip up to SF from SoCal. We didn't know the areas well but the downtown area seemed to be nice, and the poke was really good. Got a poke bowl with ahi tuna and salmon. Had to pay for parking garage for $9. Not a cheap lunch but very good and would go again!

Yelp
I love poke bowls & ate them often when I lived in Hawaii. After moving back to San Francisco during Covid & recent return to office requirements, I was looking around for a lunch spot & found Pokeworks on Yelp. I was excited to visit after checking out some pictures and reviews, and they are about a block away from my office. The entrance is on the side of the building although the street address is the Salesforce building. The space is nice & bright with high ceilings. The order line moves from right to left & progressed quickly. I got my usual favorite poke bowl (salad greens base with salmon & ahi). I added avocado, edamame & faux crab. I chose the sweet shoyu for the sauce for the proteins. Service is pretty friendly & helpful. The bowl is a good size & will fill you your stomach. The fish was pretty fresh & portions were good. I'm happy with my poke bowl (it was very yummy & healthy) & will return soon.

Yelp
This place is great. Clean, fast, friendly, and most importantly - Delicious! The menu changes with specials and seasonal stuff. But the basic poke formula drives everything. Since discovering them, I eat here once to twice a week. Ok, occasionally three times... The girl who runs the register is always fast and kind, even when several folks are shooting questions at her. She keeps the line moving. Over all I recommend this place for fast & fresh poke steps from the Sales force park, which is a great place to take the poke and eat it in a beautiful park in the center of the city.

Yelp
Just a typical poke spot, but in a great location to pick up a casual lunch! As a picky eater, I appreciate these locations that allow every single detail to be customized, down to the level of marinade. If they added kiosks too to skip the human interaction, it'd be even more perfect lol. My regular sized bowl ended up being ~$20 including an avocado add on. Pricing is steep for sure, but that's just the typical SF scene, unfortunately.

Yelp
I've been coming here a lot ever since I discovered this place. Their poke is pretty fresh. They have a variety of toppings to choose from. The portion for the regular bowl is just enough for one meal. Service is fast with some seatings inside and plenty of seatings outside.
google avatar

Yelp
I was running errands in the neighborhood. Dropped by Pokeworks to pick up lunch on the way back to work. Restaurant is bright and clean. Food is ordered assembly style. The staff behind the counter knows what they are doing. I ordered a half rice/salad bowl with lobster and chicken. Rice to mixing ratio is just right. Bowl is not overpowered with rice and salad. Everything was fresh. This is a good light lunch.

Yelp
The manager is this white man I think his name is. Michael, he was very rude to his employees mostly the Hispanic ones. It's horrible with me being Hispanic seeing that kind of disrespect. The food was OK but will not be coming back to support these kind of employers/managers. Please do better.

Yelp
Hmmmmm... 3.5 stars My coworker picked up a poke bowl for me, so I have no idea what it's like inside. I ordered a salad poke bowl with spicy ahi and salmon. The bad: - the cuts of fish were small - they forgot the wasabi - they included edamame even tho I did not want edamame in my mix in - stomach started making noise while I was eating... questionable (good thing I have a cast iron stomach) - masago costs extra but they're prudent with their scoops The good: - because I got a salad, the meal felt very healthy - they have a sushiritto option - the chili crisp is delicious, and they were able to put it on the side upon request - it's near work - do get the onion and garlic crisp - the surimi salad and tofu is free (extra protein!) - never felt like I was running out of sashimi hehe Tip: order on their website for pick up as the current menu is usually up to date Solid healthy lunch option.

Yelp
Pokeworks offers a great poke experience, especially with the $5 off your first order when you sign up. I love the customizable sauce levels--light, medium, or heavy--and the variety of toppings that mix well with the sauces. The umami shoyu and serrano aioli are standout options. They cater to everyone, including those who prefer cooked proteins like lobster, chicken, or tofu. The outdoor seating is nice, but indoor space is limited to just two tables. The servers are friendly and generous with portions. Just a heads up, the lunchtime rush can get busy, so consider using the website to order ahead.
google avatar

Jermaine J.

Yelp
I love me some poke so I visited a few various poke restaurants in the city. This one by far has the smallest portions, given you're speeding $20+ for a meal. First and last time coming here. Plenty more options worth the price when compared to this joint.
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
tried the diy poke bowl this time, it had lots of delicious ingredients to choose from. I liked the spicy tuna, chilli crisp shrimp, masago (fish roe), seaweed salad, surimi salad, and edamame. they forgot my soft tofu but it's ok the bowl was quite packed

Yelp

Yelp
I really like the freshness of their ingredients and how quickly I can get in and out of there for a lunch. The Poke Salad bowls are make your own or you select one off the menu and they make it right in front of you so you can provide input on what you want or don't want. A large bowl with three scoops of fish and a sparkling water plus a tip is $30. It seems pricey for lunch but for what you get compared to other options in the local walking area, I'll pay it. On my last visit, I sat inside with a friend and enjoyed the heaters by the window. Normally, I eat outside at a table. I hope they are able to continue operating in this climate.
google avatar

Claudia S.

Yelp
Mediocre. The selection seems wide but the fish is terrible cut and the seasoning way too light. Can only imagine it is as popular as it is because of its location. Having to listen to the tech bros chatting in line almost makes the experience worse. This is like... the Proper Food version of poke, but at least you get to feel like you're a part of the experience. Didn't even bother taking a photo.
google avatar

Soroosh P.

Yelp
Solid spot, be sure to download the app if you are coming frequently you will save. The seafood is fresh and I can appreciate the optionality in flavors and topping variety they offer. Be careful not to add too much spice as the Serrano aioli and jalapeño combo can be a little overpowering. Service as quick and as friendly a bustling lunch spot can be. The location and proximity to outdoor seating make it desirable for a quick business. Note that there is no indoor seating so I wouldn't recommend this spot on a rainy day. My only gripe with this place is the price, at $20 for a decently sized poke bowl, it feels a little steep for downtown San Francisco.

Yelp
Another office day, another new place to try. I've been trying to eat less red meat, so Pokeworks fit the bill. I went the build-your-own bowl option, where I got brown rice, spicy salmon and spicy tuna. You can pick your sauce to mix up the fish in, and the ponzu and spicy sauce was good but not really spicy whatsoever. I moved over the topping, and here's what I loved, serrano peppers and thai chilis! Not a lot of places have offer serranos, and the fact it's unlimited is awesome. The fish was good enough, not outta this world but satisfied the craving. I got the medium bowl which was $17 after tax, which is average for poke places, especially in SF. The portion size was perfect for a meal that was enough to make me not want to take a nap after. They do offer online ordering, but honestly, I like being in person to truly customize and get it at its freshest. Definitely adding this one to the lunch rotation!

Yelp
Yummy Poke Bowl reserved on the MealPal app so one saves time and skips the line! Freshly prepared and rice was lightly warm with a light taste of rice vinegar. Taste of the sauce was great and quality of poke, pickled onions, dried garlic crisps, tobiko, seaweed garnish, crunchy cucumbers and soy beans were all spot on! It's convenient to walk there. Difficult quick parking to just pick it up if one is driving may be a challenge here since it's on a busy street. Fills the lunch hunger, satisfies and doesn't give you food coma!

Riddhi B.

Yelp
Their bowls are good, with fresh ingredients and yummy flavours. They have a lot of options to make your own bowl as well as some pre designed bowls that they make freshly for you. Unfortunately, their portion sizes are smaller than other poke places in the area for the same price.

Juan D.

Yelp
first time here and was very impressed. I ordered one one the tuna bowls and flavor was awesome. Fernando was very helpful and courteous. Will definitely ret

Yelp
This place is tough to find the first time, because it's tucked in an ally amongst all of the skyscrapers. If you are in a hurry and need to get back to work or sightseeing, this is your spot. Located near Salesforce tower and a ton of business hotspots, the staff is fast and efficient to you get on your way. I went with the ahi bowl, which comes with two scoops, but has an option for a third. The staff was knowledgeable of food allergies and helped me steer clear of gluten. For the area in which it's located, this a decent value. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Hillari A.

Yelp
I kept passing this place, saying I need to try it. Boy, was I right! Great selection of bowls and fixings with specialty bowls so you can chef selections. I had the Aloha Ahi bowl - excellent!
google avatar

Yelp
My husband and I love Pokeworks, we've been coming here for years! We never knew about this location, but while on this side of town we stopped in and immediately felt welcomed by the staff! Our server Kalani was super helpful and kind while making our bowl! We appreciate the hospitality, cleanliness, and the freshness of the food!
google avatar

Stephanie D.

Yelp
The Vegan Impact tuna poke on spinach noodles was insanely delicious. I've never thought about putting "raw" tuna on noodles yet it worked SO well. I also had strawberry lemonade that was really refreshing and paired perfectly.
google avatar

Carissa W.

Yelp
The poke here is always fresh looking and taste wise it's truly amazing. I love to taste the raw ingredients all mixed together with their unique sauces. I love how much toppings you are able to get on your bowl. The overall team seems to always be on their toes. I am a mom of one so my little one always keeps me on my toes but to see how fast everyone works and the genuine connection you make with the people that work there. Makes it feel very wholesome when I eat my food because I know it is made with lots of love. Today I was helped by a woman named Cassandra. I want to thank them because now I want to bring my family here so they can try Pokeworks too. I know they will love the food and also appreciate the effort the team there makes. I definitely would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a quick tasty lunch/dinner.
google avatar

Yelp
Today during my lunch break I stopped by Pokeworks. I was hesitant because they usually have a long line but I heard amazing things about this place so I was like let's give it a try . I was helped by a girl with red hair named Cassandra. She was very kind and delightful. My food was prepared in a quick and sufficient manner. Most importantly her customer service was outstanding along with the team that stood by her side. I asked her what she would recommend and she told me her favorite creation for her poke bowl. I went through with it and it's the best decision I've made. I can see why the lines are long because it's the best poke I've ever had. The store was very clean and organized. I hope this place continues to serve tasty delightful meals because I definitely will be back.

Yelp
Pokeworks for me is a "default" poke place to go to in the FiDi when you really have no other option. And really, you really don't have any other options in the area for good poke. This place is good enough. I've been to other places that just blow me out of the water with not only the options of ingredients/mix-ins that you can add to your poke bowl but the amount of poke you get for the price. Poke N' Roll in Glendale, CA and Poke Bowl in Stonestown are two examples of places that have more ingredients and more amount of food for less money. I get that Pokeworks probably had an outrageous rent to pay so I get it. I'd say, come here if you're craving poke in the FiDi and literally have no time to drive somewhere else (I'm assuming, most office workers). But definitely don't drive out of your way to come here for poke, you'll find better somewhere else.

Elena M.

Yelp
I really don't like to leave negative reviews but I was disappointed. I wanted to try somewhere new so I ordered through DoorDash. I've had poke at so many places but this place just disappoints. Paid $20 plus tax plus delivery fee and just look at the amount of toppings. It really isn't about the cost it's more of how little I got. It seems as they counted how many pieces to put on my tray. I've had poke many times for way less and for way more portions and flavor. Is this place owned by Chipotle? LOL Not ordering from this place again!
google avatar

Karen C.

Yelp
I'm really disappointed with the Pokeworks franchise stores since I was one of the first customers at their original location in NYC and there used to be 2 hour lines for the poke. Now, it's a mixed bag whether the fish is even fresh. Half of the time I come here, some pieces of my salmon taste outright fishy and are inedible. There are fewer toppings than there once were, although this poke place still outdoes the scant amount of poke competition in the area. I like their affordable and unique drink offerings and suggest trying one out with your meal. Until the quality control improves which I don't think it will given how quickly this franchise has expanded, I don't see myself returning.
google avatar

Stacy H.

Yelp
Amazing service and portion. Love that the staff is able to help me choose what sauce/toppings taste best with my choice of proteins. Drinks are amazing as well, definitely a must try! Will be going back for sure!

Yelp
I came in a month ago for the first time, ordered ahead, and picked up. That was pretty seamless. Food was good - although it was a $20 lunch for a large salmon bowl. Last week, I got an email from Pokeworks for International Poke Day at 11:03 am - they were offering $10 regular bowls. I brought some colleagues with me - it was their first visit for many of them. I checked out and the cashier was confused and a bit mean about using the code. Then they insisted that every single person needed to install the app in order to get the discount. The email just said to tell the cashier to enter "POKEDAY22" to use it and never mentioned requiring an app download. Then when the app was installed, everyone was fumbling around and confused because there was no offer to show on the app for this, and the staff were also confused at how to do offer codes and not that happy about the whole situation. It was not busy - we were the only ones there the whole time. I would recommend downloading their app so you can earn points - it's effectively 10% back with spend $99, earn $9. Their cash register system isn't able to scan your app QR code, so you have to scan the receipt with the app afterwards to earn points if you buy at the counter. I likely will occasionally come for pick up orders, but ordering in person was kind of an unpleasant experience and I felt bad for introducing my teammates to this kinda unwelcoming place which is a shame because I like poke... :/ I don't expect over the top exceptional service, but if I usually drop $20 for lunch here, I would like to not feel like I did something wrong by visiting and bringing new people to try out the place.
google avatar

Audrey S.

Yelp
Pretty good poke! Its a nice place and they handled lunchtime rush very well. Theres no albacore but theres salmon and tuna. A regular bowl runs about 16$ -- a little pricy but pretty average for the city. I would definitely come back when I need poke in a quick pinch.
google avatar

Adam B.

Yelp
Chipotle-style highly customized lunch joint that focuses on poke in a bowl, burrito or salad form. They list some other interesting menu items like spam musubi and pressed sushi, but there were some major shortages during my first visit so none were available. Though the pressed sushi existed during my second visit, still out of spam musubi. So I stuck with a bowl and a burrito across my two visits. Hawaiian Ahi Bowl: Just ordered the standard as described on the menu, since I didn't feel like making any decisions. It was a nice mix of fresh flavors, somewhat like I remember from Hawaii. Though they toss the tuna cubes in the sauce to order, so the fish doesn't absorb the flavoring like poke shops in Hawaii where it's been soaking for a few hours. Loved that the rice was very warm, since that was a great contrast against all the cool ingredients. Only downside was that a few pieces of tuna tasted/smelled kinda fishy. Don't necessarily think that it was a freshness issue, since I felt fine afterwards, but maybe more of being cut from the cheaper part of the tuna. Shrimp & Spicy Salmon Burrito: The raw salmon and cooked shrimp both tasted and smelled fresh. I customized this burrito to my own tastes with onion, corn, cilantro, serrano peppers, green onion, sesame seed, spicy furikake, onion crisps, garlic crisps, wonton crisps, shredded nori, classic sauce and spicy serrano aioli. I was going for flavorful, spicy and crunchy. Happy to report it hit all the notes just right. Though it did feel a lot less filling than the bowl I had there my first time, probably because there is a lot less rice. About 2 hours after lunch and I'm definitely in need of an afternoon snack.
google avatar

Roop K.

Yelp
Definitely a pricey lunch spot but it's in a convenient area and good quality of ingredients. Ordering online was pretty seamless and probably better than waiting in the line around lunch time. It's very customizable which was another great part of ordering here. The fish tasted very fresh and overall the quality of the ingredients in the bowl was definitely noticeable. I only got the 2 scoop protein which was filling for me. Probably not my regular lunch spot as it is pricey, but a good one to add variety into my otherwise boring lunches.
google avatar

Erica K.

Yelp
I've been deprived of poke for a year so I decided to take a chance on Pokeworks, however the whole experience was less than mid. First off, the UI of the app is terrible and could definitely use some refinements. After downloading the app and going through the order process, I didn't get a $5 Off Mobile Signup Offer and was looking through the Available Offers part in the Make Payment section, but no dice. It probably took three app exits and double checking my email, to finally get the $5 off offer. When I picked up my order, I asked an employee if I could get a cup for water, however he looked at me with a blank face, so I approached the register and asked another employee. Upon opening the container, the portions were begrudging and edamame that was checked off, was nonexistent. If it weren't for the $5 Off Mobile Signup Offer, I probably wouldn't order from Pokeworks-the customer service & quality of food and portions were off-putting.

Vidya K.

Yelp
I did a quick takeout during lunch. It's very filling and delicious. Great value for money. The California roll pressed sushi was what I ordered. It's squarish, had a layer of rice the nori leaf was in the middle and topped with delicious crab. Yummy. A very good lunch choice.
google avatar

Lydia N.

Yelp
Very fresh Poke, yes it may be a dollar more expensive than other pokes. But you get what you pay for. I keep coming back and I always finish the bowl with a happy tummy afterwards.
google avatar

Seliya G.

Yelp
My favorite poke place in the FIDI/Embarcadero area! The fish is always fresh, there's a variety of toppings and the prices are very fair! I love it when there's edamame since that's not always available at poke places! The workers are always super nice and the space is bright and nicely decorated. This is one of my favorite places to grab a quick bite!
google avatar

Dina G.

Yelp
My poke bowl over salad (ordered for pickup) was delicious. I had Tuna x1 and Salmon x2. I liked the house dressing / sauce that came with it. I felt like there was plenty of fish, and I enjoyed having a huge selection of toppings on it. It wasn't any better or any worse than other poke bowls I've had. Very expensive at $24 including the tip.
google avatar

Fran V.

Yelp
I often come here for lunch when I am in office. They have a easy and convenient only order system, and when I go to pick up they often have a long line out the door, so I definitely recommend ordering online. I always get a regular bowl and it is consistently very good. Price is comparable to other lunch options in the area, and I can often get two meals out of a regular size. There is a seating area outside that services that provides a nice opportunity to sit and get some sun or fresh air in the middle of the work day.
google avatar

May L.

Yelp
Great and very friendly service! Love the create your own bowl option. Good toppings are the mandarins, seaweed salad, and crab. Shrimp was average, but the spicy tuna was my favorite. So fresh and flavorful would recommend :)
google avatar

Cherolyn C.

Yelp
Kierra made my experience great. She greeted me with a giant smile the moment I walked thru the door. She was friendly and just radiated joy. The food was delicious as usual and the restaurant is always clean and tidy.

Kate M.

Yelp
This is by far my favorite poke place to go to 10/10 recommend also get the smoothies they pair so well!

Toro A.

Yelp
Gave this place a try. Had the spicy salmon. Flavors are good. Unfortunately the rice was no good. Dry, hard and crunchy. Tastes like it sat in the pot for a while, drying out. The hardness tastes like they didn't add enough water when they cooked it. The crunchy is either they scraped the side of the pot or from the edges in the pot drying out. Service was speedy. Price is high but expected based on the area. Probably would go again but will make my own bowl instead of asking for the signature works with spicy salmon.
google avatar

Fion N.

Yelp
It was the best poke in SF I never had the food was outstanding would order more in the future

Christian T.

Yelp
The plant based Impact tuna in my bowl was so good. If all my vegan meals tasted this good everyone would be vegan! Love the outdoor seating they have in SF at this location.

S R.

Yelp
Food is great. Service by Kalani was fantastic! Definitely will return again and again. Hope to get Kalani as my poke guide again!

Rafael A.

Yelp
Love this place! Super friendly staff! Kalani at the Montrose location is awesome! My brain was fried after work and I asked him for suggestions and he made the perfect bowl! He had a great attitude and totally elevated my Poke experience!!!!

Yelp
Love this place. Always quick & delicious. Fish is fresh, as are ingredients. Cali is friendly and accommodating

Yelp
It might've just been me ..but I got food poisoning ): it tasted good tho. I ordered the sushi burrito with surimi and ahi tuna
