I have now eaten at the Polka restaurant twice, and it has been quite pleasant. The service is friendly and polite, and the cuisine is authentic and enjoyable - the soups are particularly good.
Some of the other reviewers complained that the prices were high, but I would have to disagree. They seemed quite in line with other contemporary restaurants, and, in Troy (where rents are higher), reasonable. Most customers are probably used to patronizing Polish restaurants in burned-out areas in "the hood" where restaurants, as well as they, are cheap.
Too bad The Polka is a long way from where I live, otherwise I would come often.
UPDATE:
I am updating this review because of my last visit, removing two stars due to substandard service. First of all, I point out that the food was good, but we had to wait a lot between various points. For example, to place our order, we waited about 15 minutes before we even talked to our server - and the place wasn't even that busy; waited a long time for any food (bread bowl), and a long wait for the check, which we had to flag her down. Also, we were entertaining an elderly gentleman, and he assumed that he ordered a lunch version (it was 1:30 p.m.) , but what he got was the dinner version, much bigger and more expensive (of course). He was too embarrassed to say something, and we figured that we would, again, have to wait a long time until it would've been rectified (getting her attention, explaining, etc.). If our server was unsure what version of a meal was ordered, she should ask: "is this the lunch or dinner version?" And if anything was to be assumed, it should have been thought of as lunch, again, it was 1:30. The prices have gone up since our last visit, and I no longer can defend it, as in my original review. At these prices, service should be near perfect. We won't be back.
