Pollara in Berkeley, One of the East Bay’s Best Pizzerias, Is Closing on June 25 - Eater SF

"Pollara Pizzeria is the couple’s latest restaurant venture, opening at Berkeley’s Fourth Street shopping district in 2019. The pizza shop was inspired by a trip to Rome and chef Gabriele Bonci’s style of pizza al taglio, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The pizzeria made fans with its slice options and wine selection, including a favorable review from former Chronicle food critic turned columnist Soleil Ho in 2021, as well as a shout-out for being a favorite establishment from natural winemakers Chris Brockway and Bridget Leary of Berkeley’s Broc Cellars." - Dianne de Guzman

Discover East Bay Dining and Natural Wine Spots with Broc Cellars’ Chris Brockway and Bridget Leary - Eater SF

"First stop is Pollara Pizzeria in Berkeley, which serves Roman-style pizza and opened in the fall of 2019 on busy Fourth Street. It’s just a stone’s throw away from Broc Cellars and features a food menu — and notably, a very good wine list — that drew Brockway and Leary in. There’s the pizza, of course: rectangles of pizza al taglio that sit behind a glass case, which the couple often bring back to the winery for a meal. (Tip: For at-home dining, back at their El Cerrito home, their move is to order the pizza cold for easy heating.) Pollara’s pizza lineup changes according to seasonal produce, but Leary points to a kale lemon ricotta slice as her current favorite: “It’s kind of like a nice salad on it that makes you feel better and has really bright, lighter flavors,” she says — while Brockway favors the Diavola, loaded with fresh mozzarella, diavola salami, and a spicy tomato sauce. Beyond the pizza, Pollara’s sandwiches have become a favorite for the couple and their family, particularly the porchetta sandwich, which Leary says is excellent but perhaps lesser-known. “We love the pizza so much and then we saw that they did sandwiches,” Leary shares. “Now it’s everyone’s go-to.” The stellar wine list was also a later revelation — and eventually a serious draw — for the couple. “It’s kind of an unusual wine list, especially for Fourth Street,” Brockway says. “When this popped open, we didn’t really know about it until a little bit later, and then all of a sudden you notice the wine list — the Radikon, Donati, and sparkling [options] — and we just started grabbing bottles and taking them home.”" - Dianne de Guzman

I absolutely love their Roman style pizza (uses a focaccia bread base). Ingredients are high quality Italian toppings, not like the greasy cheese and overly salty cured meats typical of American pizza. The Roman pizzas are at room temp and you can request to reheat in their ovens and eat indoor or outdoor or you can take home and reheating instructions are provided in writing as well as on a video on their website. Here are examples of their high quality Italian toppings: Italian sausage, pork meatballs, straciatella, diavola salame, Ndjua, prosciutto di parma, Sicilian anchovies, fresh mozzarella, ricotta, pecorino, grana padano, EVO, trumpet mushrooms, sundried tomatoes, leeks, arugula, etc... The staff is always courteous and friendly and the facility is very clean. They are near a parking lot and they're across the street from Sur La Table. I buy their left-over end of day pizza through TOO GOOD TO GO for $5.99. For that price, I usually get two quarters (6"x4") of topped pizza or half a slab (8"x12") of Rossa, leek or mushroom plain pie with one quarter of a topped pizza. This is a bargain compared to their regular prices but the content is a surprise so you can't choose in advance. They will also provide cayenne pepper flakes and parmesan cheese upon request. See pics of the 6+ orders I got through TOO GOOD TO GO.

Update: PERMANENTLY CLOSED as of 25 June 2023! 😢 ----------- Pizza is sold by the slice, usually around $6. Every time I eat here, I can't wait to return! ----------- Outstanding Roman-style pizza sold by the ounce. Pollara compares very favorably with the best pizza in Berkeley. A "regular" cut is a good sized slice. Prices aren't obvious because it's weighed after the cut, but they are VERY REASONABLY PRICED, especially for the quality of ingredients. A Kid's slice (cheese) is~$3. A slice with expensive or labor-intensive toppings is about $6.50. There's a good selection of beer (no draft) and wine, both rather pricey. The counter staff are extremely nice, helpful, informative, and patient (based on the people in front of me 😁).

The pizza was amazing. And the fritta! Oh man! I loved the atmosphere. We had a great time and had plenty leftover to take home. And it was a great place to unwind after a crazy day at work!

I had to stop by every time I visit fourth street — really the best pizza I’ve had at Berkeley! I was a little skeptical about the focaccia-like crust at first, but it was so crispy and airy in the same time which creates a light and slightly chewy texture. All flavors come with a generous amount of toppings with fresh ingredients, and they still taste super good after reheating with conventional ovens at home!

First time trying this place, based on Google reviews - expecting a really decent pizza. Half of it was obviously sitting around for a while and was completely dried out-I basically paid $19 for dried cheese bread (had almost no sauce). I actually gave the pizza to a homeless person on my way to another pizza restaurant.

Super legit roman style pizza. They do a 72 hr ferment! 🤯 the crust is amazing. I could eat it by itself which is the best indicator for the perfect pie. And make their own mozz and ricotta. This place is a sleeper hit. Run and get some pizza from this place right now.

Had the white pizza: Gorgonzola, spinach, onions, honey, chili. Topped it off with Prosciutto. Omg it was divine. The bread part is fluffy with great chew consistency and crunch when you first bite into it. That honey really adds a unique and delicious quality to the white pizza. I highly recommend this pizzeria!!
