The Best Fried Chicken in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"This national chicken chain flies a little under the radar, but Pollo Campero has a devoted local following at its only Twin Cities outpost on Robert Street. Broasted and battered, this chicken’s soft heat blooms with each successive bite. Take home a whole family meal with sides like corn salad and mashed potatoes." - Joy Summers

The line to this place was long when we went and it had been open a few weeks. Lots of Latino patrons, so this franchise must be known in the community. For me, I heard about it on social media so we headed over to try it. It's fast food but yes I did enjoy the flavor of the chicken more than American franchise chicken places. The chicken here is marinated in flavorful spices and lent some umami flavor. I'm still onthe lookout for a truly spicy chicken sandwich. Theirs isn't as spicy as they claim but we are in Minnesota... The sides weren't that good, although I did enjoy the Mexican rice. They had agua frescas and horchata which were quite good.

Friendly, fast service. Fried chicken was tasty and fresh though would have liked it to be crispier. Mac and cheese was fine, nothing special. And no drink included in combo.

Good food and decent value. Fast casual with good service. The Campero bowl was a nice filling lunch with decent flavor and texture, but I wish it had a lime wedge with it or something to punch up the flavor such as a southwest dressing. The 3 piece chicken plate with dark meat was fabulous, the flavor was something special. The plantains were fantastic, not too sweet. I liked the Jamaican beverage with lower calories than the Mango, but both were excellent. There is also Horchata. The cashier was kind, courteous however a little shy, but I hope he comes out of his shell a little more. I saw all walks of life come in through the door which is heartwarming. Nice place, way better than other fast food joints. With a drive through, I expect it to be hopping soon. Coleslaw is good, nice hit of horseradish in there with good creamy flavor and nice crunchy texture. Best that I have had in a long time. Really great fried chicken, especially the dark meat. Avocado seemed pre-made, but didn’t taste bad.

This place was good, the service was good, the food was good and everything as a whole was good. I did not have issues here and would come again. The empanadas are the best item on the menu, I highly recommend them.

The fried chicken was super good! I got the meal 4 pieces ( 2 fried and 2 limón grilled ) + 2 sides (yuca and plantain)

A great & awesome crew suggested to come here for lunch. I bought a 12 piece with rice, plantains and fries (came with hot tortillas). Also got a spicy chicken sandwich with a side of plantains. The service was very friendly, food came out hot and fast and it was to go and they put all to go items in a large convenient bag for me to carry. Food was excellent. Hands down you cannot do better in the area. I haven’t had such nice spice on a chicken in a long time. Sides were large and very good. I cannot wait to bring my son back for lunch! Gracias!

Went to Brooklyn Center Location for first time and ordered take out. Staff very friendly and accommodating, but my order was very wrong. My receipt indicated I had two side orders of beans, but I actually received two macaroni sides. Since I am allergic to diary I had to throw away the sides. I paid extra for the grilled chicken breast but it was very undercooked and I thought some portions were “red”. Evidently there is no quality check comparing order on receipt to what you actually get. Total waste of money and disappointment.

Yelp
I did not walk into Pollo Campero. I was pulled--summoned, really--by a ripple in the flavor timeline and a strange breeze that smelled of cumin and redemption. My fellowship of familiars arrived cloaked in hunger, weary from a long exile of flavorless clucking imposters, seeking the One Poultry to Bind Them. We found it. Here, amid golden crunch and divine grease, lay a civilization once thought lost: the empire of true fried chicken. The food erupted with legend. Each piece of chicken crackled like ancient scrolls being read by a spice shaman in a volcano. The yucca fries winked at me mid-bite, and I swear I heard the coleslaw recite a poem. The service was swift and strangely omniscient, like the staff had trained under a time-traveling grandmother who once seasoned galaxies. They anticipated our needs, our destiny, our thirst for plum soda redemption. And the ambiance? Mythic. The décor resonates with memories not your own. A child across the room laughed, and suddenly I remembered a joy from another universe. Something in the air shimmered--a fried ripple, a gentle chicken pulse--and I realized this wasn't a restaurant. It was a portal. Five golden drumsticks out of a deep-fried phoenix feather.

Yelp
This is still fast food but good enough to leave me feeling like I actually ate food. My first order was a bowl since that seemed the best way to try as many things as possible. The chicken in it was well seasoned, the lettuce was actual mixed greens, and I would get it again. My 2nd order was empanadas and I got some fries so I could tell my kid what they were like. The empanadas were delicious , the fries a bit on the limp side. However, the fries included a couple of the yuca fries on top as a free sample; these were crispier, and less salty tasting than the potato fries. This place is brand new at our location and I could see training was still going on. There was a little confusion when I picked up my food as I ordered online for myself and didn't use a delivery service, but the online interface works well. Staff are friendly and keeping up well with lunch rushes. The décor is bright, simple, and cheerful. However, the rest of my family is introverted enough that I don't know when I would eat in. I am glad to have this franchise here for a decent fast lunch on WFH days when I don't have leftovers.

Yelp
Too bad, really. I was hoping for something good and unusual to compete with the hamburger strands and other boring lunch spots along "franchise valley" aka Brooklyn Boulevard in Brooklyn Center. No such luck. First visit I ordered the two-piece chicken meal. Definitely not competitive with Popeye's a couple of blocks to the East. Deep fried with skin on, no breading or crispy anything. The chicken had a kind of odd red color like it had been sprayed with some kind of flavor treatment. The chicken was also overcooked, as was the side of very plain rice. Definite never-order-again. Second visit I ordered the three chicken empanada meal. The empanada shells (crusts? pastries?) were soft and slightly crispy, not soggy with oil like many I have had, Including empanadas I have had in Argentina. Really pretty good. The filling, though was a sort of medium-thick chili with a little yellow corn and little evidence of chicken. It didn't look at all like the web menu picture. Flavor was OK, but quite sweet. I didn't hate it and the shell was quite pleasant, but this one won't go onto the order-again list either The bean side dish was actually best of all. It was a sort of bean slurry with some whole beans added. The flavor was similar to Hormel chili, which I like, but it was quite runny. A surprise, really and its appearance was completely unlike its representation in the web menu, which shows a bowl full of beans. Drive-through service was good both visits.
