The Best Iconic Restaurant Dishes and Foods in Detroit | Eater Detroit

"This quaint but lively Polish restaurant in Hamtramck is filled with character and makes a mean dill pickle soup to boot. The sharp dill flavor is complemented by notes of lemon. Order a cup before digging into plates of city chicken and pierogi." - Serena Maria Daniels

Where to Dine and Drink in Hamtramck

"Hamtramck mainstay Polonia serves all the Polish favorites in a kitschy atmosphere filled with decorative plates and folk art. Start with a tart cup of dill pickle soup before moving on to comforting plates of pierogi, fried potato pancakes, and a Midwestern staple — city chicken. The restaurant features a full bar." - Serena Maria Daniels

Best Restaurants and Shops for Pierogi in Detroit and Southeast Michigan | Eater Detroit

"With its old world vibes, brightly lit dining room featuring a menu board that calls out the daily specials, and Polish folk music in the background, Polonia is as traditional as it gets, with a menu to match. No fancy fusion twists or quirky mash-ups to be found here; when it comes to pierogi the options are potato, cheese, and kraut, or meat (beef, spices, and fried onion)." - Dorothy Hernandez

This was my first time in the Detroit area, and had on my list to visit Hamtramck for Polish food. I couldn’t have been to a better place. Service was so friendly. I absolutely loved the atmosphere of the restaurant. So casual with the friendliest staff. Food was everything I hoped it would be. Flavorful, filling. I had the Polish Trio to start as well as a cup of Dill Pickle Soup. Sauerkraut pierogis for the main. Everything was excellent. I just want to thank everyone here for making me feel so welcome and serving such amazing food.

Not super busying during weekday lunch! Has been part of the community for many many MANY years. They have street parking and paid parking lot which services the whole street. They offer a large variety of polish dishes as well as some simple American items. On this trip I picked up a mean for my grandfather and got home the polish trio dinner with soup . $13 for a full meal is a good deal. It took about 20 mins and we were ready to go. The servers and sweet and take the order and make sure you know what you’re getting. They have a bar seating area as well a booths and tables This place is handicapped accessible. 10 outta 10 every time !

This was my first visit to the restaurant... all I can say is that it's wonderful how certain flavors can evoke such powerful memories. The way a dish tastes can truly transport us back to cherished times. Those familiar flavors become deeply connected to our personal histories. It sounds like you had a meal that brought back some wonderful feelings. Their food truly has the unique ability to connect us to the past. To put it simply, their food was just like my Mamusia used to make. As for the service... We had a lovely dining experience! The staff were all so welcoming and accommodating. Our waitress was fantastic; she was attentive and went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed. It truly elevated our meal to have such friendly service. We will definitely be back! As for the atmosphere... I really enjoy places with a more modern design. This place has a bright and open floor plan is so refreshing. It's nice to have some space and not feel crowded. The atmosphere was very inviting! It makes it a great place to eat and feel comfortable while you eat. As for their prices...I was so pleasantly surprised by how affordable everything was! It felt like stepping back in time to when dining out didn't break the bank. The portions were generous, too, which made it even more of a value. It's great to see a place keeping prices reasonable for their customers. We'll definitely be back!

Google
I wouldn't really recommend coming here. we came on Friday evening and had to wait a few minutes for a table. the service wasn't the best. I asked for a mix of pierogi and they were missing the meat flavor. They give you a basket with silverware, napkins, bread in ziplock bags and butter. That's just tacky, I have to set up my own table? The menu is only in English. Prices are reasonable. The food was okay. The mushroom soup, gołąbki, mashed potatoes, beef goulash coleslaw and beet salad were really good. The rest was okay, but the presentation was terrible. The plates/dishes look sad. It was super loud, even though there was no music. There's a huge parking lot behind the restaurant. They charge 4% for using card!!!!! Of course we were not informed. That's just scamming people. That pissed me off. If you want Polish food, go to the village Cafe next street over.

Google
Everything was so good! I was absolutely stuffed by the time I left! Friendly and attentive staff; I got there early on a Sunday and I am glad I did because within the hour every table was full and there was a line to get in! The pickle soup was one of the best I have ever had.

Annual event, we also visit throughout the year. Consistent experience, food always excellent, staff polite and personable, dining room clean.

Google
The food is very good. The service was friendly. Polish music plays and some Polish beers are available. I like the smoked sausage has a fire roasted touch. The dill pickle soup is excellent. Pierogi was very good and the potato pancakes were nicely crispy. A friend had the golumki and said it was close to mom's. The schnitzel was very good and the city chicken is always good.

Google
What an amazing place each time we come better than the last. Very clean and the food is delicious 😋 like eating at a friend's house. The soup is very tasty and filling, the stuffed cabbage is on point and the mashed potatoes are real mashed potatoes. We love the pierogis also made in-house. We were treated to a tour of the upstairs. Very cool. City chicken is the BEST!!! We are looking forward to our return. No pictures of the food this time, too delicious to wait to snap a photo of the food, next time for sure.

Yelp
Obviously a community staple. Still serving the amazing Polish food you would expect. Amazing service. They gave it a long overdue makeover inside and it's beautiful which I forgot to take pictures of.

Yelp
Had the platter with smoked sausage, pierogi, stuffed cabbage, and mashed potatos. I love Polish food so it's hard to choose. Generous servings. Nice staff. Clean. Food comes out quickly. Reasonably priced.

Yelp
First timer! Had bacon spread, and some sort of "Greek pizza." Then the city chicken which is of course not chicken. Omg, so delicious . It was a carbish heavy night. Breaded meat on a stick with mashed potatoes and cabbage. Had some sausage and delicious pickle soup. So good and so filling! Bring an extra tummy... or just bring it home. It actually reheats well. Will definitely go back- easy to park- just don't forget to pay.

Yelp
Service was great. The inside was super clean and had really nice decorations on all the walls. There was also a full bar with sports playing (couldn't say drink that day.. lol.. but looked like a chill place to grab a few drinks with friends). The food was delicious. We dropped in for a small lunch. We ordered a shareable appetizer (pictured), corn beef and roast beef sandwich. Like many great spots in Hamtramck, this restaurant is located on a residential side street. There was plenty of street when we showed up for lunch.

Yelp
Service was ok, ambiance was fair and the food was pretty good. The food came out fairly quick so that was a good thing! I recommend the polish combo plate and cabbage soup! Parking is in the street or pay for lot parking right next door.

Yelp
This is the single best Polish food I've had. Anywhere. Period. The interior makes me think that my passport has been stamped by a customs agent within the past 12 hours- and I couldn't be happier about it. I'm not terribly familiar with Eastern European interior design/aesthetic (or any interior design/aesthetic for that matter), but it's warm in its simplicity. As this is a food review...moving on. Service was wonderful. Considerate, attentive, prompt. Explanations, guidance, and recommendations were all spot on. The folks who work the shop are invested in it, and this extends to the customer's all-around experience while dining. Food: look at the pictures. Portions are both bountiful (culinarily) and frugal (fiscally). I wanted to say that there's a buttery subtlety behind the kraut and the meats- if fat is flavor, then sign me up for that buttery ride through the northeastern European costal plain. And then there's potatoes. Typically I see the spud as an also ran. Save it for the Irish stereotypes where the tuber gets boiled and plopped on a table. Oh, no, no, no. Not here: the watchword with respect to the potato is versatility. As a main: crispy meets soft of the pancake. As a side: put through a "softening up" as would the Służba Bezpieczeństwa (yes, I googled 'Polish Stasi' to find that out) a dissident in the 1960s and doused with gravy (ahhh, the gravy), a counterpoint to the kraut and sausage perfectly presented. Dumplings also terrific, though as a component rather than a feature. The sausages: I'm not giving a hierarchy of preference; they're all world class. Seriously. Good luck figuring out which one you prefer. I can't. Maybe I'm tainted by the fact this is a Bourdain place. Or maybe Bourdain really knew good food because he could tell from the feel of the space, the character and mannerisms of the staff, the intangibles that only a chef can pick up on. If the latter is the case, the I'll concede the former as well. Some eateries break the boundary of culinary constraint of being a restaurant. Those places, few and far between in my experience, offer the experience of and institution. And by institution, I'm not talking about a place or a building. It's the sum of experience reduced to memory and feeling. That's what Polonia is to me; hopefully others as well.

Yelp
Went there today with my son after our baseball game at Hamtramck Stadium. I haven't been here in about seven or eight years and it has since been renovated. It's a very clean, cozy place. The service was very good and prompt. Started with potato soup which was delicious. Both dinners were superb and plentiful as one would expect from a top notch Polish restaurant. My wife and her family are from Poland so I've had my share of homemade Polish dishes and I can tell you the food here is every bit as good and authentic as Babcia makes. Smacznego!

Yelp
I was in the mood for Polish food. In the Detroit area, there's no better place than Hamtramck when it comes to Polish food. The decor has notes of the old country wherever you look: paintings, porcelain that looks like it's been passed down from generation to generation, and polka artifacts. Polka music plays, providing a festive mood. There are specials with reasonable prices for drinks; a Zywiec (an excellent Polish lager) is $6 on tap, and a Warsaw Mule is $8. Service was brisk...the drinks were served no long after the order was placed, and the food also arrived quickly. I ordered the salmon potato pancakes, and so was warned that the salmon is smoked. I love smoked salmon. What you get is basically bagel and lox with potato pancakes and sour cream instead of a bagel and cream cheese. The potato pancakes are served with raw vegetables as the only side, so I added a bowl of pickle soup. The pickle soup here is like a cream of chicken soup with some dill added. The effect is subtle...I like to be punched in the mouth by a dill pickle soup, but this is still good. The jalapeño pierogis were terrific...just enough heat, and a bit like a quesadilla when topped with sour cream. The only misstep we're the cheese pierogis. You're expecting cheddar, but instead you get something that tastes like cottage cheese. Strange. Some dishes come with a housemade sauerkraut that's more savory than the kind you're probably used to having. Get it as a side if it's not part of your dish. Portions were massive. Other than the cheese pierogis (which no one wanted to eat), there was so much food that everyone had plenty for another meal. I feel like downloading polka music now so I can recapture the mood. Definitely worth a return trip.

Yelp
Parking can be done either in the adjacent pay lot or free on the narrow residential street. Enter the space through the red door on the left and you'll find the friendliest and most efficient staff serving wonderful Old World Polish cuisine and beverages! I loved the decor too, including the Polish pottery and the mural on the back wall! I tried a tasty cup of the sweet and sour Czarnina on this visit. It was delicious! My side salad with creamy Italian dressing on the side was fresh and crisp. My companions raved about the sausages, both fresh and smoked. Indeed, the Polish know sausage making!

Tee S.

Yelp
The restaurant was nice and clean. We had a little of everything and it was all delicious. The service was efficient but I wouldn't describe it as friendly. I would definitely go back.

Yelp
I am so absolutely impressed with the renovations at Polonia. The place looks amazing. The atmosphere made me feel right at home. And the food was great. Our service was wonderful and I can't say enough about John and his team. I would definitely recommend you give this place a try. My mouth is watering thinking about going back.

Yelp
Food and service were amazing. Staff was sooo friendly and knowledgeable about all things Polish. Special shout out of appreciation to the bartender who taught us a thing or 3 about appreciating a good polish vodka. (Str8 or on ice preferred, but he was very accommodating in recommending a cocktail as well). After a full day of tourism, I can safely say that Polania is the true envy of Detroit, Mi.

Yelp
Update - and I should have written this much sooner than I am. Open and remodeled, they've got a great bar now with all the standards and favorites, Polish and otherwise. We went on St. Patrick's Day weekend and they had a few specials such as the Polish Leprechaun drink and corned beef pierogi. I didn't choose either but since they had zurek soup on special - my absolute favorite! I chose that, as well as the cheeseburger pierogi to split as an appetizer and smoked salmon potato pancakes as the Lenten special. The smoked salmon pancakes were loaded with salmon and so delicious. I have leftovers for breakfast today. And a great price for the amount of salmon you get. My husband was happy with the city chicken, always good.

Yelp
The food was real good. Although not the most amazing flavor but that's expected with Polish food. The staff was friendly and fast. The atmosphere is very beautiful and family friendly.

Yelp
Far and away the best Polish restaurant and is still in Hamtramck! Best selection of menu items and everything is done very well. Service is fast and often native Polish speaking. Kitchen staff look hard working. Decor was redone a couple of years ago, for an authentic feel. Should be on your list to make the effort to go there!!

Yelp
My friend and I stopped in here for dinner - it's a favorite of hers! I had never been in before, but enjoyed the bright atmosphere and Polish pottery, as well as the polka music - not too loud for conversation. I had the City Chicken and the sides were carrots - just the right amount of doneness - mashed potatoes with gravy, and kraut. My entree came with a cup of dill pickle soup, which I practically inhaled. I added a potato dumpling (pierogi) because I love pierogi and wanted to try theirs. The city chicken was two pieces, extremely tender and well seasoned. The potato dumpling was also amazing. I'm not a kraut fan, so I passed that over to my friend. The server was pleasant and gave quick and good service. Good place in Hamtramck!

Yelp
i love this spot i've had amazing meat loaf before this time incredible chicken fingers, mashed potatoes and chicken noodle soup.... the beers also!!!! hope the waitress finds her way, clearly HIGH, struggling with serving, utensils and speaking...

Yelp
I don't like leaving reviews this low, but there was no excuse for the experience I had. There were four of us in the party. We arrived in the early evening last Saturday. There were people eating there, but there also quite a few tables open. We were directed to a booth and provided menus. A busser came by and delivered water and bread. We were not visited again by a single server -- or anyone else. In the thirty minutes we sat there, a table next to us -- that was seated after us -- was visited by a server, had their drink order taken and delivered, and put in their food order. We tried several times to catch someone's eye, but we were just ignored. Thirty minutes was the most we were willing wait; especially when other tables were being served. I had been looking forward to visiting this restaurant for weeks. Now, I will not be back because it is a complete failure of management for any customer to have such an experience.

Yelp
Eaten here many times over the past few years, to the point that Polonia has become an essential stop any time I come to Detroit. I've tried almost every dish available, you truly cannot go wrong with any choice. It's all tasty. Service is usually very quick, and you will leave satisfied. Plus they have Anthony bourdain's approval.
google avatar

J N.

Yelp
Its always a pleasure to eat here. You can never go wrong with the food here from the Dill soup to the main dishes.

Rob D.

Yelp
Food is always good. The parking lot next to the building was metered. I don't think as a paying customer I should have to pay for parking. It's hamtramck after all.

Yelp
Alert the media -- I tried my first-ever pierogi and it was delicious. We came to this classic Polish spot with a Polish friend who eats here with her family often. The interior is adorable, with traditional Polish glass plates, art and keepsakes lining the walls and booths. The lighting is dim and service was quick and informal. We got potato and cheese pierogis, potato cakes, sausage, and dill soups to start. I was surprised by how incredible the dill soup was - take a leap and try it! It was slightly creamy and not too empowering on the dill. The potato cakes were also one of my favorite things I tried. For my entree, I got the beef goulash over potato noodles. It was incredible! The beef broke apart easily and came out on a steamy plate. The potato noodles were big and thick, like little pillows all over my plate. The food was SO filling and heavy that I couldn't even finish half of my meal. I'll definitely order less next time, but I highly recommend visiting this authentic spot!
google avatar

Khanh C.

Yelp
Frozen bag veggies...that's all that needs to be said. The food here is completely underwhelming and overhyped. Plus there is a 4% surcharge for using a card. We will see this place on one of those restaurant-makeover shows soon. Everything from the decor, staff and food is uninspired and offensive.

Yelp
How have I not reviewed Polonia yet? I've been coming here for years now, and it really is my go-to Polish restaurant. I've been to the others, I keep coming back here. It's much nicer after the updates, I don't miss those rock-hard benches. They have a lot of choices, from "dumplings" (I don't know why they don't call them pierogies on the menu) to really awesome City Chicken. One of my favorite things here is the dill pickle soup - I tried it from all the big places, and this is my favorite by far. The kapusta is also righteous - it's in my top 3 and this is the place where I learned that it's different (and much better IMHO) than sauerkraut. The two different kinds of sausage - fresh and smoked - are also really good. They give you lots of food at a reasonable price, accompanied by good service. Come here for great Polish food, you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
I am addicted to this dish shown in my photo...unfortunately I can't remember EXACTLY what it's called. But the combo of that tender beef, potato pancake and tomato based sauce which I'm pretty sure is seasoned with paprika and dressed with sour cream...this is "my eyes roll back in my head" good! They also have the best pickle soup around in my opinion. I love the cucumber salad and will add more to my review next time I go because I've been going here for years but this was my first trip since pre pandemic. I have many delicious meals to revisit!
google avatar

Nick C.

Yelp
Had the combination plate and the stuffed cabbage was delicious! Everything was very good but the stuffed cabbage really stood out. The overall experience was great. The staff was friendly and attentive. Definitely will be back if I'm in the mood for Polish.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm really glad my daughter had Polonia on her list of places to eat while we were visiting her in Detroit. Any place that has sour cream in a squeeze bottle at the table is all right with me. There were three of us dining together, and we all tried something different so we could sample a little of everything (to be more accurate, they provide a lot of everything). I am very happy that I decided on the Trio - 2 pierogies, 2 potato pancakes, and one fresh sausage. My wife enjoyed the stuffed cabbage, and the goulash with potato noodles made my daugter very happy. Aside from the top notch food, there was one other thing that impressed me about Polonia - on the night we were there, there was a table of 7 or 8 women who were there when we arrived, and were still having a good time when we left. This is the kind of place that lends itself to enjoying both the meal and the company.

Yelp
Great service. Authentic look and feel. Food was very tasty. Potato pancakes, cucumber salad, dill pickle soup among the favorites.

Yelp
Great food, superb service, welcoming ambience! Highly recommend! We were in the area for a business trip and heard from a friend this was the place to go! By the time we arrived Monday evening however, Polonia was closed. Instead of turning us away, the owner invited all 6 of us inside. Not only did we receive an impromptu building tour teaching us of the storied Polonia history, we were served authentic polish sausage, gourmet bread, and decadent mustard all prepared by the owner himself! It was unlike anything we've experienced. The passion he showed for his restaurant and food is unrivaled in this business. You will not regret eating here. I have my calendar marked for the next time we're in Michigan to have dinner at Polonia! Thank you to the owner for a wonderful experience! We will see you soon.

Yelp
I did the trio platter and it was amazing. The Pierogies are amazing, the meat I got was top notch too!! I also got potato pancakes which were amazing: I definitely recommend this for a brunch! I was even surprised when the brought out balloons! I can't wait to order from here again ! I highly recommend this restaurant You need to try it out asap 10000%% Yeah

Yelp
Excellent food. Just like grandma used to make!! The location itself was a bit bland and not great ambiance (kinda like grandma's house) but good grief this food was fantastic! I ordered several appetizers and sides so I could try different things. Since it was our first time there, I had no idea what I would like best. I pretty much liked it all! Personally, I don't care for the one cheese Pierogi (not cheddar but a white cheese) but that was one of hubby's favs. City chicken was actually better than what grandma made as it was not overcooked (sorry grandma). The cold slaw was excellent! I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Excellent polish food at a reasonable price. The service is also usually very good. Casual setting

Yelp
I love a lot of things, and surprisingly Polish food is one of them. I had heard about this place because I am a huge fan of Anthony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern, (along with one or two other TV food people) and have wanted to stop here after Anthony Bourdain himself had visited here several years ago. Walking in, you forget you are in Detroit. It's not overstated, dimly lit and the staff here seems to be a tightly knit group and family run. I had reviewed the menu before going down and had it narrowed down to 3 dishes I couldn't decide on. After discussing it with the waitress, I went with the cabbage soup to start, and the cabbage roll dinner which came with steamed veggies and mashed potatoes. The cabbage soup was really good and well done. Tasted home made and really good with different things going on there in my mouth. I loved it! What impressed me the most was the cabbage rolls themselves. They were absolutely out of this world! I devoured one of the two rolls instantly and really enjoyed the steamed veggies. The mashed potatoes were a bit dry and dense, and I was able to get through about half the pile. Overall, I really loved coming here. It reminds me of dining out as a kid for some reason before everything became fast casual and ordering food online in a hurry. I know this place gets mixed reviews, but it's legit to me and I will gladly return. Also, I loved the staff here as they were really super friendly and took thier time ordering my food with me and answering questions.

Yelp
Ok I am updating my review because I have been here so many times and I think it's about time for me to give you the Duchess's option on what is incredible and being polish myself, it's just like grandma made it! And I highly recommend here... over the other establishment you would normally go to in Hamtramck

Yelp
My brother and I visited Detroit this past weekend and stayed in Hamtramck. I knew I wanted one of our meals to be an old-school Polish restaurant in the neighborhood. After much Yelp research, I picked Polonia. And I'm glad I did. The restaurant is charming. Old school and traditional and just cute. The service was excellent (our waitress was very helpful in helping me pick a beer and even brought us free shots of cherry cordial when I explained that I was too full to eat the dessert I had had my eye on)! Big parking lot just next door. Several Polish beers on the menu. And the food. Everything was good. So good that I ate way too much (hence no room for those sour cherry crepes I had planned on). Dinner plates come with your choice of soup, salad, cole slaw, beet salad, or cucumber salad. Then there are various soups you can choose from: dill pickle, chicken noodle, cabbage, beet, and duck. I got the dill pickle soup, which I LOVED (I didn't even take a picture before I'd devoured every last drop), and my brother got the duck soup, which was soooo delicious, too. For his entree, he got the roast pork loin with potato noodles. The potato noodles (dumplings really) were good, and the pork loin was good as well. But I got the Polish combination plate - stuffed cabbage, sausage (choice of fresh or smoked), 2 pierogi, and mash potatoes with gravy. I chose the fresh sausage on the advice of our great waitress, and everything on that plate was delicious! I can be a little picky about stuffed cabbage ("doesn't taste like Mom's"), but it was delicious. The sausage was amazing. And pierogi? I'm an easy sell on those little pockets of deliciousness, but these were great. The meal was delicious, affordable, and fun. I left stuffed but very happy. I'd eat here again if I lived in Detroit. No question. I might even eat there once a week!
google avatar

Bob F.

Yelp
I've eaten here a couple times. The most recent visit it was as if they just dumped Campbell's tomato soup straight from the can on the stuffed cabbage. The cabbage soup tasted the same. I'm pretty certain it was soup from a can. We def will not be going back.

Donald M.

Yelp
Outstanding food and service. I will be back. Kowalski kielbasa was very tasty. Pierogis (5 flavors) were tasty and of ample size. They charge 4% extra to use a credit card.

Yelp
Surely Detroiters have strong opinions on which of the two main Hamtramck Polish restaurants they like better, but we enjoyed both quite a bit. Polonia Restaurant has a more kitschy decor, though I wouldn't go so far as to call it touristy. Maybe just more welcoming? Either way what matters is the food, and that's fantastic here. They even have some vegetarian options, which isn't too common with this cuisine.

Yelp
Polonia is a cute and kitschy Polish cafe. I've avoided getting Polish food for ever because I assumed it would basically be just like the home-cooked Russian food that I'm used to- and I don't want to pay for what I can get at home lol. However it is different enough to be worth the trip and it was delicious while still retaining that hearty, home-cooked taste. We ordered the breaded pork chops and a combination platter and both plates were extremely filling. Make sure to get the dill pickle soup, it's the best Polish dish! If you're getting the mashed potatoes ask for extra gravy btw. Prices were reasonable so we will be returning. Loved the assortment of traditional Polish music in the background. Nothing like eating pierogi to the sounds of accordion. So cute.

Yelp
I must say... Polonia makes the best sausage I've ever had. I know that's a bold statement but it's truly difficult for me to think of a sausage on the same level as their Polish. My first Polonia experience was at the Naughti by Nature Yelp event. This place was full of endless food and drink, so I was sampling EVERYTHING Inmade my way over to the table loaded with sausages and tried one... then I had another sample... and another. They are fantastic. So, since I loved it so much, I recently headed to Hamtramck for more. I had a Polish beer, some pierogi and a sausage! Everything was delicious and I think my bill was under $10!!! The interior reminded me of old style restaurants I went to as a child and you can feel the culture. I plan to bring my mother here for her birthday and I will be returning many times after that as well.

Yelp
Dined here after the Packzi run (2/22) and beat the rush. Sat at a cozy table for 2. Got the 4 shots for $5. Tasty. They brought bread and butter to the table. Ended up getting the polish trio. Pierogis were awesome. One was sweet cheese and one potato. Potato pancakes were good and the sausage was ok. Hard to get a place to sit in this place when it's busy.
