My brother and I visited Detroit this past weekend and stayed in Hamtramck. I knew I wanted one of our meals to be an old-school Polish restaurant in the neighborhood. After much Yelp research, I picked Polonia. And I'm glad I did.
The restaurant is charming. Old school and traditional and just cute. The service was excellent (our waitress was very helpful in helping me pick a beer and even brought us free shots of cherry cordial when I explained that I was too full to eat the dessert I had had my eye on)! Big parking lot just next door. Several Polish beers on the menu.
And the food. Everything was good. So good that I ate way too much (hence no room for those sour cherry crepes I had planned on). Dinner plates come with your choice of soup, salad, cole slaw, beet salad, or cucumber salad. Then there are various soups you can choose from: dill pickle, chicken noodle, cabbage, beet, and duck. I got the dill pickle soup, which I LOVED (I didn't even take a picture before I'd devoured every last drop), and my brother got the duck soup, which was soooo delicious, too. For his entree, he got the roast pork loin with potato noodles. The potato noodles (dumplings really) were good, and the pork loin was good as well. But I got the Polish combination plate - stuffed cabbage, sausage (choice of fresh or smoked), 2 pierogi, and mash potatoes with gravy. I chose the fresh sausage on the advice of our great waitress, and everything on that plate was delicious! I can be a little picky about stuffed cabbage ("doesn't taste like Mom's"), but it was delicious. The sausage was amazing. And pierogi? I'm an easy sell on those little pockets of deliciousness, but these were great.
The meal was delicious, affordable, and fun. I left stuffed but very happy. I'd eat here again if I lived in Detroit. No question. I might even eat there once a week!
