Polurrian on the Lizard, Mullion, Cornwall, UK - Explore & Book

"Perched on top of a cliff facing the silvery seas and setting sun, this handsome Edwardian building has been around for over 100 years. And it has welcomed its fair share of notables, including Marconi who sent the world's first transatlantic radio signal from nearby Poldhu Cove. But it's since been reborn as a determinedly 21st-century boutique hotel with all the trimmings. Its 40 bedrooms and 6 villas that scatter the grounds come in a range of sizes - some sleep 2, some sleep 6. The best ones come with sea views, and that is what it's all about here. In the light-filled Vista Lounge, walls of glass reveal a 180-degree vista of the swooshing waves below. Come for a drink here at sunset - it faces west, so you're in for a spectacular show. Elsewhere there's an excellent spa where I had an outstanding neck and back massage. And there are good children's facilities too – pool table & table hockey, huge gardens, play area, two pools: a fantastic complement to the Lizard's sandy beaches (one of them 5 minutes down a stepped path) and subtropical gardens. This is a place to delight all: kids, parents, couples and friends after a slice of Cornish coastal bliss. Highs The location: a prime, west-facing spot on the lovely Lizard peninsula, near the pretty harbours of Mullion and Porthleven There's an Elemis spa and indoor pool to keep all ages amused if the weather turns Plus an outdoor pool and tennis for dry days, not to mention the sandy beach just below The villas are perfect for parents plus children, and good value too (book them early!) We loved the Vista lounge, with deep sofas, a wood stove and lazy chairs looking out over shimmering seas Lows Restaurant service can be very slow, and we found the breakfast buffet rather limited (though the cooked options were good) During school holidays, the hotel is full of families, so don't go then if you want a quiet, romantic break You need to pre-book your time in the pool, with sessions limited to 30 minutes each With 40 rooms and red-carpeted corridors, it feels more 'hotelly' than some of our smaller Cornish properties We gather there is construction on site in spring 2024 with no definite end date; we advise asking about this when booking" - Michael Cullen

Polurrian on the Lizard, Helston | Best places to stay in Cornwall

"A breathtaking cliff-top setting on the Lizard Peninsula isn’t the only thing this Edwardian hotel has going for it: the South West Coast Path weaves through the gardens, with another path leading to a private cove and beach. The 40 rooms include a 3-bed stand-alone suite incorporating a fitted kitchenette, and a private terrace with a hot tub, as well as magnificent ocean views looking out over Mount’s Bay and Mullion Island. Guests also have exclusive and complimentary use of an electric Mini Moke for at least one day during their stay. There are also six, three-bedroom self-catering villas on the road behind the hotel – each sleeps six and comes with a kitchen and terrace. It’s definitely a hotel for active types. There are facilities and activities for families, including a creche, games room, cinema and an Elemis spa. In summer, surfing, kayaking and coasteering are close by, and the hotel provides blankets, buckets, spades and crab lines for days out at the nearby, glorious beaches. " - Matthew Roach

A very beautiful looking hotel and fairly reasonable compared to other hotels in this bracket. The scenery and the location are beautiful as the hotel sits high up on a cliff with breathtaking views across the lizard peninsula. The rooms with a sea view I would highly recommend as you can fall asleep listening to the waves crashing against the rocks whilst looking out over the ocean. The restaurant and vista serve a variety of dishes for everyone and again would highly recommend dining there as you can enjoy your meal whilst looking out over the ocean.

We stayed for 3 night as a wedding anniversary celebration. We found that it exceeded our expectations on many counts. The location and views are fantastic and made more enjoyable with the changing Cornish weather. We had some lovely walks along the coast path and popped in to Mullian to enjoy the local pubs and coffee stops. Pool and pool area area was very hot but the Sea is cooler if it is too much for you. Advertised as Dog friendly and it really was, so often we see 'dog friendly' but this was one of the most accepting, nice touch with the room door labels for when your dog is left alone for a short while. Overall, good value for money in our opinion. Oh, should also mention the beautiful gardens. Really happy to stay again at some point in the future.

We had a bit of a mixed experience with lunch, which I won’t go into, because honestly it’s no longer important. Helen was absolutely brilliant. She was already on the front foot before we’d even raised any concerns, and when something else came up, she handled it quickly, professionally, and with a genuinely friendly attitude. What could’ve been a disappointing experience was completely turned around thanks to how she dealt with it. Also, the views here are incredible, worth coming just to have a drink and take it all in.

The cream tea was served in a beautiful setting with attentive and solicitous service. Unfortunately, the scones were dry and dense and I doubt if the jam had ever seen a strawberry. Very disappointing, such a lovely place could do better

Had a one night stop over at the hotel, staff were very polite and the hotel location is just beautiful. Our room was very comfortable although it was rather dated, having a huge crack in the basin was surprising and the very shallow step in and out if the bathroom was an issue so be careful, not sure if all rooms had this, apart from these minor issues, would return? definitely! Breakfast was great, and again service impeccable

We had a great stay. Food and service is really good. Excellent base to walk and explore this gorgeous part of Cornwall. We had a lovely room with a sea view. Whilst I appreciate that there is going to be an extensive upgrade to the hotel, the existing gym is very poor, not clean and generally feels unloved, probably best to close as my personal opinion is that this was the only negative thing about our recent 2 night stay. Special mention to Amber Dickinson who was great and offered exceptional customer service.

Lovely location. Beautiful scenery. Room overlooking the sea was very nice and comfortable. Service bit hit and miss. Ordered eggs on white toast received brown, ordered thyme and onion soup received tomato. Food wasn't quite as nice as expected. Chicken was a bit dry. Fish of the day not available. Another fish dish came with muscles when I thought it meant muscle sauce. Menu was the same the entire stay. Breakfast was okay as mostly self service. Service charge added even when having a mocktail made. Had service charge removed for one of the messed up dinners. The pool and jacuzzi was lovely. You get given a half hour slot bookable on the day, not in advance.

It’s in a truly wonderful headland location overlooking the sea but is in desperate need of the total refurbishment apparently planned for early 2026. We stayed 3 days during a heatwave, and aside from the swimming pool the hotel is simply not a comfortable place especially if your room is facing the sea, and full afternoon sun. Breakfast service was good albeit a bit slow but not as slow as the bar service, which during our stay was under staffed ( and then by very young, inexperienced bar staff ). But such a good location we would consider returning after the refurbishment, and seeing reports that the service has improved.

Yelp
Impressive looking hotel in great location overlooking Polurrian Cove on the Lizard. Owned (since Mar '08) by the same family that runs the 4 star Treglos Hotel at Constantine Bay near Padstow, this is a friendly and informal hotel. It would seem that the Barlow family are still investing money in the Polurrain - perhaps to gain that extra star. At the time we were there, they were carrying out work improving the leisure suite - the hotel has indoor and outdoor pools as well as a pool table, jacuzzi, beauty treatment rooms etc. The food is plentiful and of a good standard (important) and is served in an attractive restaurant overlooking Mounts Bay. The adjacent bar has comfortable soft furnished sofas and armchairs or if you wish you can watch the sun go down over the horizon. The rooms are well appointed and well furnished and staff friendly and helpful. The coastal path runs close by and Polurrian Cove is about 10 minutes walk away. The cove has an excellent sandy beach and as the nearest public parking is some distance away it doesn't get too over crowded. It is, however, a fair climb back up to the hotel from the beach at the end of the day.
