Pompa - Review - Gràcia - Barcelona - The Infatuation

"Pompa is the diminutive new sibling of Berbena, a trendy spot known for its playful food and superb taste in wine. It’s also more casual, with a kitchen that consists of a two-burner stove and an oven that could fit in a carry-on. Which all makes the elaborate menu go even harder. There’s a collagen-rich hake pil-pil made with cheeks instead of tails, a deep, briny tarama laced with trout eggs that pop satisfyingly in your mouth, and a sweet-and-savory, not over-creamy crème fraiche ice cream, topped with sea salt and a generous drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil. The pared-back interior—think distressed walls and a vinyl record player blaring Otis Redding—channels a Bushwick-meets-Oberkampf wine bar. Never pass on the cheese and charcuterie, which are so magnificent they would convince even the French to raise an approving eyebrow. Book well in advance to avoid disappointment." - Isabelle Kliger

It took me a while to digest this experience. My expectations were high, but unfortunately, it didn’t quite live up to them. The food was good, but a week later I can barely recall what I ate, except for the ice cream with olive oil and salt, which stood out as the only truly memorable dish. The wine list is extensive, but I felt the pairings didn’t really complement the courses. The service was the biggest disappointment. It started with wonderful communication by email to make the reservation. However, in the restaurant, it seemed that not all tables were treated equally. We felt rushed to finish so the staff could seat the next group. They assumed we were done with our mains and quickly asked about dessert, then brought the bill without us requesting it.. and we weren’t late. The highlight of the evening was the vinyl collection: great music and atmosphere, although it did get a bit too loud at times. Lastly, we left the restaurant smelling like food, which shouldn’t happen in a place of this level. Overall: good food but doesn’t justify the price.

Those who come to Pompa thinking it’s Berbena’s little sibling miss the point. The food is excellent (as you’d expect) but it’s the wine and the familiarity of service that let Pompa stand on its own two feet. The wines are the same, but different: (lots) more of them, beautifully curated, with dishes that feel both refined and disarmingly familiar. There’s a strange ease. Yes, the setting is more polished, but you still feel like you’re among old friends… always. Carles and his team have created something as welcoming as it is ambitious, and you taste it most clearly in every glass poured. If you’re disappointed to be here because it isn’t Berbena, I’ll say it again; you’ve missed the point.

Wow. As someone who is a food enthusiast, Pompa has been one of my favorite discoveries during my stay in Barcelona. Sister restaurant to Berbena (also phenomenal), I got lucky to score a seat at the bar on my last night. Atmosphere is warm, welcoming and friendly. Chef calls you by name. Makes sure you’re included in the nightly conversation and truly welcomes you into his kitchen. Watching the cohesiveness of the staff and the kitchen and the preparation of dishes was the best part. I will not be surprised if they eventually get a Michelin star. Good food doesn’t have to be complicated or fancy. And this is exactly what Pompa delivers. And don’t miss out on the creme fraiche ice cream please. Trust me. You’ll be thinking about it for a while. Highly recommend!!!

Great food, very friendly stuff.l and what a wine selection… wow. You must have a reservation, since the place is small and very popular:) Best part is little dog Nora, who is welcoming guests and making the experience 10 times better :)

If I could add more stars to every category above I would! This was the first restaurant my partner and were lucky enough to get a reservation to join them for dinner. Everything was spectacular! Highlights for wine was an orange muscat, a local red and for food shrimp tostada melted in my mouth along with duck hearts and beans with potatoes.

A clear articulation of a group of people who LOVE what they do. Delicious food. Deliberate pairings. If you had one meal in Barcelona, this is where you must go. Thank you.
