The Pope Receives a Chicago-Style Pizza | Eater Chicago

"One of Chicago’s oldest restaurants is expanding to Elmwood Park, with a new outpost opening in September that will bring the Taylor Street institution’s longtime favorites — sandwiches, strudels, pastas, and pizzas — to the suburbs. Family-owned since 1909 and once a multi-location operation before scaling back to its flagship, it’s taking over a space that previously housed a convenience store and, before that, a Jewel, and will also serve food at the Taste of Elmwood Park from August 7 to 10." - Jeffy Mai

Google
Its the same wonderful food and service of Pompei on Taylor, but in a more relaxed, comfortable, and safer suburban environment. The food is all absolutely delicious, yep, everything is very good. Fresh and home cooked Italian food at a very reasonable price. Service is terrific, they are friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere is cute and comfortable, can't wait till next summer to sit outside and enjoy the food and area at the same time. You gotta stop, this place is amazing! It will not disappoint.........

Pompei is truly one of the best new additions to the community. From the moment I walked in, I was impressed by the quality of the building itself. Everything feels brand new, thoughtfully designed, and built with comfort in mind. It is a place where you immediately feel welcome and relaxed On this visit, I ordered the meatball sandwich, and it exceeded every expectation. The meatballs were large, perfectly seasoned, and smothered in just the right amount of marinara sauce. The bread they use deserves special mention because it held up beautifully and added the perfect texture to the sandwich. Hearty, flavorful, and filling, this was the definition of comfort food done right We also ordered the cheese pizza, and I can say without hesitation that it is the best in the entire community. The cheese was clearly high quality, rich, and flavorful, while the crust was simply amazing. Light, crisp, and perfectly baked, it is rare to find a pizza that gets both the toppings and the crust just right, but Pompei achieved it For dessert, we tried the Taylor Street cheesecake, which was absolutely phenomenal. Creamy, rich, and perfectly balanced, it was the kind of dessert that makes you stop mid-bite just to appreciate it. A perfect ending to an already stellar meal Beyond the food, what really stood out to me was the service and atmosphere. The staff was extremely friendly, attentive, and professional. They are clearly well staffed, which makes the experience smooth and enjoyable. Combine that with the warm, high quality environment, and it is clear Pompei is raising the standard for dining in this area One of the most surprising parts of the visit was how reasonably priced everything was. The food quality is top tier, yet the prices are very affordable, which makes this not just a great place for special occasions but also a regular go to spot. Once word spreads in the community, I can see Pompei quickly becoming the staple destination for everyone Overall, Pompei delivers on every level. The food is delicious, the portions are generous, the service is outstanding, and the setting is beautiful, all at an affordable price point. If I could rate it higher than five stars, I absolutely would. On my next visit, I look forward to trying some of the other amazing dishes I saw being served This is without a doubt the new go to restaurant in town and one I will return to often

Google
Taylor Street legend in Elmwood Park! So much to choose from. Authentic pizza, pasta, salads, and soups. Sandwiches and strudels. Beer, wine, and espresso. Tiramsu and biscotti. Order at the counter and get served at the table. Friendly and helpful service. Restaurant is bright, open, and super clean. Also have takeout and delivery options.

Had the meal served buffet style for a meeting there. The tomato bread was delicious, just like from an old Italian bakery down on Grand Avenue. Eggplant lasagna was outstanding. Not a big fan of the gnocchi in vodka sauce, but maybe it was just me. Nice meeting room space. Staff went out of their way to accommodate. Highly recommend

Met the owner! Nice to see an old friend. Didn't realize I've been to his other locations since the 80's food is still some of the best family Italian food I've ever had! A taste from my old Chicago neighborhood!! Great blast from the past!! I'll be a regular customer, AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN!!!

Google
Never been to this place and I didn't realize you order at the counter and they bring you the food and there is a self serve drink station and napkins, silverware and to go containers ..Thanks to the young man cleaning tables he brought us 2 pitchers of water And plastic cups to start as we waited for the rest of my family 8 people in our group tonight..I gave him a nice tip and he helped us throughout our dinner which was very nice .We all enjoyed the food especially my picky grandson he loved the fries ..

Google
I don’t usually take the time to write reviews, but I really wanted to for this one, because too often people only write when they’ve had a bad experience. This new neighborhood location Pompeii truly deserves recognition. From the moment you walk in, you can feel the warmth and authenticity. The food is INCREDIBLE, true Italian flavors, made with care and quality you can taste. The service is just as impressive, friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. It’s clear that the owners and staff take pride in what they do, and it shows in every plate and every interaction. Our community has been waiting for something like this, and I’m so happy they chose to open here. Wishing the whole team continued success, we love having you in the neighborhood!

Yelp
I was sooooo glad to hear that Pompeii opened up kind of close to my house. While I liked the food, a trip to Taylor Street wasn't in the offing most of the time. I wanted a Pizza Strudel, I haven't had one in years. It didn't disappoint one bit. The place was packed, but the staff handled the crowds well. The restaurant itself was kept clean even though the seating area was packed with hungry diners. I'll be back often

Yelp
Pompeii officially opened its doors today, September 22nd 2025 at 10:00 am, after months of anticipation and delays. This new spot is a great addition to the neighborhood. They have counter service with table delivery and have a drive-thru. I tried the fried calamari, and it was phenomenal... seriously one of the best I've ever had. It's clear a lot of hard work went into this place, and it shows in the quality of the food. I'm already looking forward to my next visit. Thank you Rose, you are a treasure !

Yelp
I've been here twice so far and both times I did get the same thing but only bc it was so good I needed another order :) . They have a great menu and the ambiance is clean and low key. It's like a deli look to it so you can wear jeans and a shirt , no need to dress up . I didn't go in but they have public bathrooms and a gambling area . All the people I've talked to that work there are really nice too. Bringing my friends back there on Sat bc they all drooled at my stuffed artichoke picture :)

Yelp
Pasta, meatballs, pizzas and salads...All good.. But never ever get the chicken vesuvio..The Chicken was barely cooked, the potatoes were raw and moldy.. Actually moldy..The pictures only show one side..Both sides all black ..Question..How many people working there handled these moldy potatoes?? The guy who cut them, the person that cooked them,,and the person that brought them to the table ..Moldy and uncooked...Bad,,very bad...

Yelp

Yelp
Just like what I remembered from the Taylor Street location. Plenty of pizza slice options, including the slam-dunk winner Pizza Pompei. The strudels are decent. Lots of different food options and plenty of soda and alcoholic beverages. Service is prompt, helpful, patient, and kind. Not much waiting when I go. This location has plenty of space and is very clean.

Yelp
Food and services very good. Beef Angelo strudel was top notch. Everything we had was delicious And reasonably priced

Yelp
Great to have a family friendly establishment open up in the circle. The new location replaces a convenient store that we never had a use for in our household. After months of construction, you can see how the space was transformed for the better. Similar to the Taylor St location, you order at the counter with some of the pizza displayed, and other items on the menu. Once your food is ready, the staff will bring it out to your table with a number on it. Each time we've visited Pompei we've ordered the pizza for the kids, and they've really enjoyed it. I've had both the pizza and pasta. I prefer my pasta sauce to have a little more spice, but it was still a good pasta dish. They have a couple of beers on tap. The space is very long and isn't very cozy with the bright lights...but I prefer the outdoor area. Not too crazy about the tvs in every establishment. The staff is quick to clear your table, and the space is clean. Hard not to return when the food is well made and so close to home.

Yelp
The absolute worst gnocchi with vodka sauce I've had in my life ordered takeout and ate it within 20 min of ordering was complete mush and disgusting took two bites and threw it in the trash and they have the audacity to charge people 17 dollars for tiniest little portion will not be dining here any longer

Yelp
Ordered 2 chicken parmigiana pasta dishes today. In between 2 hockey games. Need some protein and carbs. Good stuff!!!!

Yelp
Food was good. It was a quick in and out. Reasonable prices. The wait for my carry out order was timely.

Yelp
I remember the location downtown off Madison and Wells so I was happy to see one open nearby. It's a lovely spot and has an enormous menu, but you will be nickel and dimed to death. Pasta plain (marinara or oil) will start at $14. Add $2-3 for any other sauce and add another upcharge for veg or meat. What is really bizarre is the charge for chicken or broccoli is the same?? You also have to line up along the display counter where everything is no matter if you know what you want and the people in front of you are just staring at every individual item like they've never seen food before while two cashiers wait to take orders. Two pastas (which are tiny for what you are paying) and one soda was $40.

Yelp
As a lover of Pompei Oakbrook I was excited it was opening in my neighborhood. The food and staff were excellent. However...the bright lights do not make it conducive to spend time there and relax and order another glass of wine. It feels like an in and out place and for the price I'd rather go to a restaurant that felt cozier. Maybe it's my age..

Lori B.

Yelp
food and service were good. Nothing to go out of your way for. Don't waste your money on desert. Cheesecake was bland and weird texture. Pound cake was VERY dry. Tira mi su was dry and all whipped cream.

Richard H.

Yelp
My wife and I had lunch at Pompei Elmwood Park yesterday 11/22/25. We had spinach lasagna and meat lasagna, they were both Great!! The red sauce was really tasty!! The staff was really friendly and helpful!!. Pompei's food is great!! And it's a great place to watch a football game and socialize with friends!!

Barbara C.

Yelp
Stopped by to catch lunch. I know that Pompeii is not a full service so my expectations were not that high. I ordered an egg and potato sandwich. Dry. Bland. Tasted like fish. No seasoning at all--except for the fish taste which I don't think was on purpose. Never again. My only other experience with them has been an order of pasta with meat sauce at lunch. Meh. Could have made it at home with jar sauce. I waited and waited for them to open in Elmwood Park and it's been a disappointment. The staff, however, was courteous, friendly, and efficient.

Renee H.

Yelp
Hospital food is an upgrade. No flavor, lasagna sauce taste like chunky ketchup. Listen to me when I tell you not to get a salad, lettuce is soggy and brown. Grilled chicken taste like cardboard. Shouldnt have been lazy today and cooked myself!!!!

Sabrina S.

Yelp
The pasta with tomato cream sauce and 8 finger cavatelli pasta was great! I added grilled chicken and peas to the dish, so yummy! The meatballs were great too. We also ordered a slice of pepperoni pizza which was just ok. And a slice of cherry cheesecake. Its tasted more like lemon than cream cheese. We will definitely be back for more pasta! Place was very clean and staff was friendly.

Don J.

Yelp
Not only is the food delicious, but the customer service is sensational. Stephanie and Katherine in particular were wonderful, as well as the rest of the crew. Ambiance is unreal, service is unreal. Will be back - many times.

Teegan C.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place since it's so close to where I live, but I'm pretty disappointed. I've been here twice since they opened. The first time was during their soft opening. My husband and I went and we were very impressed with the appearance of the restaurant. It was clean, well decorated, and smelled really good. We shared two strudels - sausage/mushroom/onion and chicken parm. The first one was delicious! The second was sorta meh. Edible, but nothing to write home about. I went today with my parents and son. With tip, we spent over $80 and some of us left hungry. My dad ordered the meatball sub and a large soup. The sub was generous for the price, but it didn't taste good. It had a strange aftertaste. He has all of us try it and none of us liked it. The soup was NOT worth $12.95! My dad said it was worth $4 at best. My mom, son, and I shared the meat lasagna and chicken herb ravioli. They tasted good, but they arrived lukewarm. I could complain about the service, but they're a new restaurant with new staff. I'm sure those kinks will get worked out over time. A major issue I personally had was their high chair. The buckle was broken and the slots where a child's legs go were super small. My average sized 22 month old couldn't fit. I had to grab his stroller from the car. It's not easy to feed pasta to a toddler while they're in a stroller. For this reason alone, I don't see myself coming back. We saw a lot of higher up staff/management walking around talking to other tables. We were hoping one of them would have stopped at our table, but they didn't. Bottom line, they still need time to work out their issues. It could be a solid restaurant for EP. I think they need to rethink some of their prices, make sure the food is actually hot when they serve it, and get new high chairs.

Cyrus G.

Yelp
I wouldn't go here if you want actual service. Just went in and waited about five minutes while no one came up to take our order despite there being a lot of people behind the counter. The food looked good; would be nice if someone had given us the chance to try it.

Wilma R.

Yelp
Great food and service! It was very busy when we arrived but the staff cleared a section and accommodated our group of seven people. We enjoyed our meal with some carafes of beer on the patio.

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
POMPEI has a large menu-something for everyone. The food is delicious! I highly recommend Marie's Special Salad. It goes well with any of their pastas, pizzas or sandwiches. It has a relaxed and casual atmosphere. All at reasonable prices!

Janet F.

Yelp
Food delicious. Staff great and accommodating. So happy to see them close to me. Better than trucking to Taylor street. Had the chicken ravioli. Excellent and individual pizza with olives. Great sauce on top. Only mishap my top came off salad dressing so lost that but still restaurant crowded and clean and mural outside beautiful.

Michele D.

Yelp
The Food was Great! Tried Strudels DELICIOUS! Fried Calamari Very Tasty and Tender n Cooked just Right! Salad grilled chicken with dressing was just the way I like it! Slices of different pizzas, especially the 1 with peppers onions sausage. The service for their few days of opening was great for all the customers that came in to enjoy their food n service. The Restaurant is beautiful and the staff welcomes you to their establishment. 5 stars to All! Everyone is friendly n accommodating! See you Soon, we will be Back ! Thank You

Rudolph T.

Yelp
The food was excellent. The service was great. The ambulance of the place was excellent.
