The Best Coffee Shops in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"This neighborhood coffee shop with a mission (it raises money for Bethel Family House, a faith-based addiction recovery center), serves kolaches — nola-ches — pastries, breakfast sandwiches, frappes, and coffee drinks in one of the friendliest atmospheres in town (it’s also wheelchair accessible, not a guarantee in New Orleans). As a major bonus, it’s open late, until 9 p.m. daily." - Eater Staff

Google
ABSOLUTELY THE BEST COFFEE SHOP IN NEW ORLEANS!! The food is awesome, and the coffee is great!! Everything is made fresh daily, and Pontilly offers a great selection of pastries, Nolache's, salads, and more. *Local hotspot*

Every single time I come home I stop by Pontilly. They were bombarded the Mardi Gras season. I’m happy more people know about them. But I hope many more know about the great customer service. Yes. The biscuits are THAT GOOD!!

Andrea Wall

Google
What a pleasurable gem! Invited by a friend, I found Pontilly Coffee to be more than a coffee house. After ordering food and coffee, we wandered out to the garden area adjacent to the cafe.

Google
Great coffee shop with good snack/breakfast and drinks. This place is a haven for anyone looking for a nice atmosphere. They have a lovely ministry with people who have struggled with the drug additions. The outdoor area is absolutely beautiful!! Thai biscuits are a must try!! I love their chicken and turkey salad sandwiches as well.

Colorful, courteous, and contemporary, this Christian-based American café is one of the best I've ever been. The aura is one of a genuinely welcoming environment - literally, as the staff casually shouts "Welcome to Pontilly Coffee!" every time the door opens (they do it when people are leaving too, maybe as a knee-jerk reflex while they work to maintain courtesy. My head-canon explains that even as one is leaving the café they're always welcoming the Holy Spirit inside). The food is mostly breakfast/brunch with some choice salads and dessert. The breakfast is outstanding - I've been here at least ten times and anytime I've ordered breakfast, even as this place is packed during rush hour, the quality consistency has yet to drop and is better than most. The price reflects the freshness of ingredients and the labor it takes to make them shine on the plate. In short, the breakfast isn't cheap but it packs more value in the price than you would get anywhere else. As to what to order? Kolaches are good (I've had the crawfish one and the spinach & feta one so far) but anything that involves the staff cooking in the back is gonna be fire coloring the rest of your day warm and fuzzy. But what about the caffeine options here? They have a respectable menu of the usual coffee items (latte, mocha, cappy, etc.) with a blend of their own coffee creations (the Holy Spirit combining just coffee and espresso lol) and teas ranging just different green, black, and herbal. They all get the job done and I've never had a remote notion of my money being ill spent here. With the addition of plenty of outdoor seating, no-fuss Wi-Fi access, and relaxing music always playing in the background, this place really shines as a beacon of the community and would easily earn a 6th star.

Google
Great place for coffee and breakfast food! They have incredible prices and delicious food. The workers are always friendly and there is a nice atmosphere inside and outside. I recommend the biscuit! It is so big and tasty.

Google
I go here to get coffee every time I visit family attending the Seminary across the street. The coffee and NOLA-ches are outstanding, and the service is fast and friendly. Uplifting music is always playing, and on every wall there is original artwork. This place is always busy, because it’s so good.

Google
Wonderful vibes and great coffee. Lots of art to look at and friendly company. Truly a gem.

Yelp
Nice environment and atmosphere! I am greeted as soon as I enter the building! Good food !

Yelp
This place is the bomb! The cats meow! I had the bacon, egg and cheddar biscuit with pomegranate hibiscus iced tea! The service was spot on! Super helpful and friendly. Made suggestions as it was my first time. The place itself is so dang cute especially the backyard garden seating area! Felt like I was in another world! So nice! Great place to come get coffee and dessert!

Yelp
Pontilly was on fire today. I ordered the shrimp and grits, breakfast sandwich, and chocolate chunk cookie. Everything was delicious. I can't always say that, because, in full transparency, sometimes it's hit or miss. Food: Shrimp and grits: 10/10; they add bacon, cheese and jalapeños to their version, and I don't think I've ever seen these three ingredients in other versions I've tried. Delicious! Chocolate chunk cookie: 10/10; I don't remember having this before, and I've tried mostly all of their desserts. If I had it before, it wasn't memorable, but this one was deelish. Breakfast sandwich: 9/10; I had the breakfast sausage, egg and cheese on croissant. OMG! It was off the chain, and reminded me of the sausage/egg/cheese McMuffin from McDonald's. The sausage and egg were well seasoned. I initially thought the croissant was on the smaller side, but at $4.50, it was fair. Service: Service was good. The cashier was nice, and I received my food within minutes. Ambience: I think most people come for the ambience. It's a great place to hang out. Super friendly, casual, and spacious. Great vibes here.

Yelp
I'm always looking for a cool coffee shop. Found it! And they have a really cool outdoor sitting area. Oh, and did I say my breakfast crossiant was really good? Yep I will be back.

Yelp
I highly recommend stopping here for coffee if you're in the neighborhood! Their chai was the perfect start to a long day of walking around NOLA. Even though we walked in with a group of 20+ people, staff was courteous and quick to fulfill our orders!

Yelp
Okay, I don't know why my phone decided to take terrible pictures, but here we are... This coffee shop is AMAZAAAAAZING! The coffee is a solid 9/10. The food selections are top tier. Their smoked Turkey salad is absolutely delicious. It's not heavy on mayo at all (thank God) with the perfect hint of sweetness. It's so good! I'd go back just for that. Their chocolate croissant is buttery, chocolatey, light, and easy to take down. They have a pretty good selection of food and drinks. The interior is also gorgeous. Very "hip" and aesthetically pleasing (at least to me). Free Wi-Fi. Honestly a great place to get some work done in the evening. Customer service is great! Finallly, their patio is stunning. It's so pretty. It's like a huge garden with seating. I can't wait to go back to grab a seat out there!!!

Yelp
I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!! Everyone who works here was SUPER Deep South nice, just lovely people. The bathroom and the main eating areas were kept clean with someone constantly cycling through grabbing plates. It felt like a "Cheers" kind of place. A lot of the people k saw the few days I came in were returning people as well and the coffee was SO good. It wasn't super dark and bitter. They have hot fresh food as well as prepared salads and I had a fruit cup each time. They were fresh and delicious. I love traveling but hate falling in love with a place I can only visit a few times! Enjoy!

Yelp
Pontilly outside area is covered with outdoor fans. Every seating area was spacious and roomy The atmosphere is great, and the staff is friendly and respectful. I'm looking forward to the juice bar that will soon open next door. I've tested some of their juices, and I thought they were fairly nice. I paid $6 for a medium iced mocha matcha. Didn't try any of the food but it looked amazing:) great place to study ! 10/10 recommended!!!

Dominique S.

Yelp
Everything is always amazing! They always greet me with a Good Morning and or Welcome! My iced caramel lattes are always perfect & I love grabbing my favorite hot sausage & cheese. This place is a gem. Great place to stop by and study or work if needed. Pontilly yall are the best cafe around! Keep up the great work and take care.

Yelp
Pontilly Coffee is truly a hidden gem in the neighborhood! Whether you're stopping in for a quick coffee or staying for a meal, the quality never wavers. The coffee is always brewed to perfection, the food is delicious with great variety, and the service is consistently friendly and welcoming. Every visit feels like a treat, and you can tell the staff genuinely cares about providing a great experience. If you're looking for a cozy spot with fantastic offerings, Pontilly Coffee never disappoints!

Yelp
First time coming here. This is my old stomping grounds. Gentilly Woods The area has changed quite a bit. This place is a nice neighborhood addition. The people are friendly and attentive to each visitor. Food was good and the layout of plants, greenery and signs are a nice touch. A little hot to sit outside but they really have fans everywhere and also those little fly swatting fans you have near the food. I am glad to see a neighborhood feel establishment doing well here. Was home for a class reunion and returned twice.

Vanessa Z.

Yelp
Great place! And the best biscuits eveh! So fluffy and buttery omgee. I got the hot sausage and egg on biscuit and my daughter had the breakfast kolache with egg and sausage & the littles had chocolate chip cookies. Coffee was good too. The staff was super friendly and the outside patio are is huge with plants galore! So cute! Watch out for their juice bar soon to open.

Yelp
I was very impressed with the service, atmosphere, and flavor of the coffee here. I ordered a latte, and it was perfect! I'm a regular latte drinker, and if I say it's a smooth frothy cup, you know it's a good cup!
google avatar

Yelp
I don't know about you but I have a secret obsession for finding the best bakeries and coffee shops around the city. If you're in the area this place is a MUST VISIT! There were so many pastries to choose from... my eyes couldn't believe how many nolache options they had! We decided on the hot sausage, cheese and egg, southwest chicken, Philly cheesesteak, crawfish, and shrimp, --and they were all delicious! Though, the southwest chicken edges them all out bc of its accompanying green sauce. That sauce has my heart! Super friendly staff. And they also serve brunch/lunch here so if you're looking for new coffee shop to try definitely add this place to your list.

Yelp
I like the spot a lot. So far I've only had the caramel frappe and iced caramel macchiato drinks. I also tried their breakfast sandwiches (ham and cheese on croissant and another one made with Tabasco mayo). They were decent. I would say they are small and underwhelming for the price. Felt like I needed two to get full. The ambiance is giving very much coffee shop. Come thru for a grab and go or meet friends for coffee date, study, etc. They have a beautiful outside eating area with fans, plants, statues. My baby girl really enjoyed all the decor and nature. The staff is so friendly and swift with orders. I will def be returning to try more off their menu. Hopefully one day they can add Thai ice tea. One of my favorite breakfast drinks but oh well for now

Mandy R.

Yelp
Delicious iced coffee! The cutest place. Seating outside like you're sitting in a garden!

Yelp
Desperately needed coffee on our way out of town. Cute friendly clean delish spot. Packed w locals. Highly recommended!

Yelp
New Orleans is on my top 3 food destination places. Every time I come to this city I'm always left incredibly content and just excited to keep trying more. With that said, do yourself a favor and visit this coffee shop! The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. The crawfish nolache is to die for. My gosh, I'll have to come back every time I'm in town!
google avatar

Yelp
Friendly service. Quick on a Saturday morning. I had a big biscuit with bacon which came with choice of 3 cheese, egg. Real butter y'all. The biscuit was fresh hot. Bacon was cooked on a clean grill for those of us who can taste the difference. Sooo good. I got a tea and it had honey. Tea bag in the cup a plus for me.
google avatar

Amy A.

Yelp
NOLAches! So good. Had the spicy shrimp, spicy sausage, and smoked sausage. Also had the white chocolate espresso bread pudding. The best bread pudding we've had in NOLA! Stop at this gem on your way out of town and skip the French quarter lines
google avatar

Arthur W.

Yelp
This place does not disappoint. Great coffee? They have that. Terrific pastries, food, service and vibes? They have that too! I think it is a great location to work or just hang out while you eat and refuel. I recommend the Nolaches. Trust me! I really love the local/community feel every time I enter.
google avatar

Yelp
Such a cute outdoor seating area. I really love this coffee shop.
google avatar

Janelle C.

Yelp
Stopped for breakfast before we got on the road back home. Cute place and very attentive employees. Service was very quick. I got the regular sausage, egg, and cheese nolache and an iced white mocha to eat while there, and a chocolate croissant and apple hand pie to go. The nolache was delicious and can't wait to try the other treats!
google avatar

Bobby G.

Yelp
My wife, daughter and I went here when we were visiting New Orleans and I'm glad we found this place! When you walk in, you are immediately greeted and all of the employees are very friendly and helpful. We ordered three Nola-Che's and they were all really good. We ordered the spicy sausage, ham, egg & cheese and spinach feta. The spinach feta one was fantastic!!! Lots of spinach and the bread is cooked very well. My wife ordered a hot chai tea latte and it was really good and full of flavor! I had a regular cup of coffee and it was good as well. We are glad we stumbled upon this place and look forward to coming back again to try one of their many different pastries.
google avatar

Amanda T.

Yelp
They are always busy! The servers are sweet and make sure you are taken care of always. Especially for me when I am placing my order to take back to Texas! One thing not to miss...the Nolaches. Thank me later!
google avatar

Ellery D.

Yelp
My friend and I stopped in here on a whim after googling "nearest cafe" and I'm so glad we did. We both tried the Pontilly latte which contains cinnamon and honey, and it was just perfect and cozy on a rainy day. The staff are friendly and the place has nice vibes and charming art on the walls. Only giving them 4 instead of 5 because the lemon coffee cake had a slightly moldy aftertaste, but it happens... especially in humidity, stuff goes bad fast. My friend had a banana muffin and was very happy with it Would definitely come back for another latte.
google avatar

Keke A.

Yelp
It's so cute in here. When I walked in, I immediately felt welcomed. It feels like home away from home. Would be a good spot for breakfast and coffee and/or tea dates with friends or family. Will be my go to for a nice home cooked warm breakfast now.
google avatar

Yelp
While visiting NOLA, I wanted to try a new coffee spot other than Starbucks -- it's only right! So, I came to YELP and discovered this wonderful place. The vibes are nice and the employees are really friendly and helpful! I really wanted a macchiato however their espresso machine kinda went on the fritz shortly before I walked in and it did kinda break my heart a little -- so, I settled for an iced caramel coffee. It was really good. Not too sweet and not too strong. The perfect mix. I also got a strawberry/cream cheese hand pie (I think that's what it's called) -- kinda looks like an empanada & boy was it tasty! Everything is super reasonably priced, too. I wish I had more time to just sit and enjoy the aesthetics of the inside of this coffee shop because it's so colorful and it made me feel really happy! Coffee, sweet treats, and bright colors?! How could you go wrong with that? Anywho. I know I'll be back when I come back to NOLA, if you're looking for a good quality coffee shop... you should check them out, too!
google avatar

De L.

Yelp
This place is awesome!!! The breakfast is on point and the coffe is really good. The pastries are fresh and the atmosphere is very nice. The employees care.

Shannon B.

Yelp
Excellent atmosphere and service. I also love the fact that their Christianity is on display (via words and deeds).
google avatar

Meghan R.

Yelp
How have I not reviewed this place yet?!? After spending 6 years in Seattle with coffee on every corner I was looking for a close coffee place. They have a fairly decent size menu of drinks and I love their selection of pastries. The cinnamon rolls are the best!!! 20 seconds in the microwave at home and they are ooey-gooey heaven. Plus they have a rewards program!
google avatar

Tact M.

Yelp
This place is an oasis. I love the coffee, and the atmosphere is intoxicating. I love going here when I need to get away from the rigors of my day.

Ty J.

Yelp
This place is a hidden jewel in Gentilly, we had the Breakfast plate and it was deliciousThe cafe/shop was clean, the customer service was A-1, and I loved the relaxing religious music playing in the background I will definitely come back when I'm in town and be sure to tell all of my family‼
google avatar

Yelp
This coffee shop became one of my favs in the little time I was visiting New Orleans. My friend looked up coffee spots near my hotel knowing that I like to try new shops when traveling. This cute little coffee shop was down the street from where I was staying. As soon as I walked in they greeted me. I had some questions since it was my first time and they were so nice and helpful. This place is known for serving kolaches. I saw they had a philly steak kolach so I had to try it. I also ordered an iced vanilla coffee. Loved the coffee! The kolache was really good too. They even have some really cool wall decor. There was seating both inside and outside. There were some locals just having some morning coffee and chatting with friends. Others were getting some work done. If I lived in New Orleans I would definitely become a regular. They also have a rewards program. You get points with every purchase.

Lacie C.

Yelp
Love this place! My latte was soooooo good! The pastry I got was amazing. The artwork is phenomenal. Such a cool funny little place that I hope to return to on my next New Orleans trip!
google avatar

Elizabeth G.

Yelp
Coffee was great, kolaches awesome. Really cool environment to hang out in. But it's SO LOUD. The music was blaring the whole time. Don't try to work here and you'll be just fine.
google avatar

Joey L.

Yelp
Very friendly & swift service. Menu has lots of options plus some really good food options for a coffee shop. There's lots of space in here and wireless Internet access if you want to stay a while to get some work done. Get your car washed next door and wait in here with a hot (or cold) beverage and a nice pastry.
google avatar

Rick P.

Yelp
Friendly, tasty, quick, clean, efficient, easy parking, . Yes, I'll Be Back! The croissants are close cousins to those I find in the small streets in Lyon, France. Yummy.
google avatar

Deirdre T.

Yelp
Although it's only been two check ins this is my 3rd or 4th visit and I'm SO glad Pontilly is in my neighborhood. 1. Quality coffee and tea at decent prices 2. Very tasty food menu. Get the big biscuit if you need a filling "i don't care about calories" breakfast. I also love their almond pastry. It has just the right amount of almond extract so that it's not so sweet you pucker up. I implore my fellow Gentilly neighbors to continue to support this local coffee shop. The free WiFi is reliable and fast. The customer service is top notch and they have a decent rewards program. $1= 1 Star and once you've earned 60 stars you can get a free drink. (I.e. $60 spent) but with me coming here at least once a month or so and buying items for my family I'm sure to hit that threshold sometime around Mardi Gras 2019. The facility is clean and well looked after. Now the final reason why I give this establishment 5 stars--- there are plug outlets EVERYWHERE. An outlet accompanies every single table along the walls. There are also outlets above the windows, so if you're having a larger gathering, patrons can still access outlets with out having to string cords all over the floor. Oh yeh Pontilly --y'all got this one right. Cheers until my next caffeine fix.
google avatar

Tyneka D.

Yelp
Tried out this coffee spot, and let me tell you the moment you walk in, you know your visit is appreciated. About 6 people yelled "welcome to Pontilly Coffee" I felt a bit overwhelmed but definitely welcomed. Now on to the service and taste. Service was good, I wasn't rushed with my order but instead the cashier assisted with suggestions. Sausage egg and cheese kolache was a sausage patty with scrambled egg and cheese wrapped in an Hawaiian sweet dough. The bread was actually the best part, request it to be warmed. Caramel latte did not have a robust flavor with the roasting of the beans and not overly sweet. It was just right that I didn't have to add anything.
google avatar

Nick C.

Yelp
Love this place, really helps the community and serves great food and coffee... and actual legit awesome service
google avatar

Shanita F.

Yelp
Plenty of seats and great musical vibes for a good work session. The music is pretty loud and so are the patrons (at least I was pretty loud) so don't expect library silence. I ordered the apple caramel bread pudding and it is SO GOOD! Make sure that you ask for it to be warmed up! I also ordered a medium chai tea sweetened with honey. There was no line, so my drink and came out very quickly. They take Apple Pay, and they have a loyalty program! The parking lot is very small, and there's no street parking, so carpool with your friend! Free, unlocked wifi!
google avatar

Nashale W.

Yelp
Really good coffee & nolache's, I never had anything like it before. Super nice people & perfect location.

Peyton G.

Yelp
The staff is always welcoming and inviting. Very cute atmosphere with paintings and unique artwork. The food and beverages never disappoint! Soon to become a part of anyone's routine. Would highly recommend, always!
google avatar

Robby S.

Yelp
This amazing little coffee shop is located directly across the street from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and it packs quite a punch. Delicious breakfast and the hot sausage kolache with cheese is awesome. Lots of different coffees so no matter what your flavor, they probably have it.
google avatar

Henry B.

Yelp
CHANGE YOUR PASTRIES!!! This place use to be amazing coffee breakfast sandwiches Nolaches. Sandwiches are still good. But now 2 different occasions the hand pies that were AMAZING or now horrible!! 2months before this Coronavirus stuff started and now during it. Both times the sweet potato hand pie has tasted like it's been in the front glass for 2 months!! I understand pastry are not made fresh everyday but jesus you have to swap them out at least a day or two later they are waiting weeks I wouldn't feed that spoiled mess to a stray dog.
google avatar

Teneha B.

Yelp
Hello!!!! Winning!!!! Only a month old!!!! If you build it, THEY WILL COME. SORRY St*rbucks, y'all missed out. I'm happy to see more businesses come to the area and this one is no exception. The spot of the former ICE HOUSE on Gentilly across from the Baptist Seminary; between 'God is good car wash' & Church's Chicken is this god-send of a coffee shop. Not only that, but this is a FAITH BASED coffeeshop... LOVING IT!!!! Proceeds from sales go to the program to help other program participants; way cool!!!! Annnnnnnnnnnnd to top it off, there's a loyalty program that is super duper awesome. Pros: Close to my house The loyalty program Great hours Great pricing Giving back to the community Coffee, tea, lattes, snacks & lite bites Cons: More parking I'm so ecstatic!!!!
google avatar

Charles H.

Yelp
GREAT VIBE I just wrote a similar 3-star review for the Kolache Kitchen on Freret. But its issues are the total opposite. That store has probably the most authentic and flavorful kolaches and klobasneks in the city but there is no energy in the restaurant. IT'S A NO ON THE NOLACHES THOUGH On the other hand Pontilly has probably the most interesting diverse clientele in the city, a vibe so energized by the friendliness and earnestness of the staff it is infectious to the long but fast moving line of customers. But the bread HERE is all wrong. It's awful. See my pic. Like a burnt Parker house roll- doughy, acrid, dry.
google avatar

Yelp
lmao spoke too soon bit into a whole ass wood chip while eating my spinach feta croissant & my vanilla iced coffee tasted sour!
