On the Grid : Ponysaurus Brewing

"A bit of a healthy walk from the heart of downtown or a short cab ride away, this spot is just what Durham needed. Their official tagline is “the beer beer would drink if beer could drink” - need we say more? A brewery outfitted with plenty of picnic tables, an upper deck, and some indoor seating, Ponysaurus is great for grabbing a quick beer or camping out with a larger group for the afternoon. Ponysaurus doesn’t have a traditional food menu, but a food truck is always parked on-site or you can order from their grill menu. Stop by on Sundays for biscuits and beer." - WillowTree Durham

The 13 Best Restaurants In Durham

"North Carolina is littered with breweries, making it easy to find a good pint just about anywhere. But it’s worth checking out Ponysaurus first thanks to its expansive lawn covered in picnic tables and umbrellas. They’re not a place that only focuses on hoppy options, as you can get a lot of choices like its superior biére de garde, Mexican-style lager, a cherry sour, and the brewery’s signature Don’t Be Mean to People saison, benefitting local LGBTQ organizations. Parking is easy, dogs are welcome, and you can order some pizza and garlic knots, making it an ideal place for a low-key Saturday afternoon. " - eric ginsburg

First time coming to this place and it was on point! The pizza was so good and reminded me of a classic stone oven New York pizza. Their beer selection had a nice variety of different taste for your palate preference. Defiantly would recommend going if you have never been before!

Adam Lewis

Google
Pizza and beer? What more could you want. Tried a wide variety of beers. The cherry sour , IPA, Pilsner, Kolsch all were great. Also how can you not love a motto of “don’t be mean to people”?

Dick Burgman

Google
This brewery had 16 beers to choose from. I had a flight of 5 beers and all were excellent. They have a great garden area outside and some inside seating. They also had pizza. The restrooms were clean.

Google
Great place to hangout with friends. Good selection of beers with some great food. I had a pilsner, a margarita pizza and garlic knots. Everything was great! The outdoor seating is really nice. You can also reserver the upper floor for events. If you go on Wed nights, there is Music Bingo as well.

Google
Great beer, awesome location, good vibe, and friendly people. Absolutely loved eating my cesar salad as little lettuce boats, and the pizza was delicious! As far as the beer goes, we tried the brown, the IPA, session IPA, and the scotch ale. All were so good we decided to get the saison to go without even having a pint first.

Google
This is an amazing place. I ordered the cheesy bread and it was very delightful. They had a trivia night which was very fun with fire pits and the football game on tv. I love this place. My girlfriend ordered 4 special beers.

Kaitlyn Barton

Google
Solid beer, super fun atmosphere. True to form, we tried both IPA options, a west coast and white style, and really enjoyed both. In my commitment to leave my IPA comfort zone, we tried a flight with zero IPA representation (rye pale ale, mango wit, Belgian blonde, Pilsner). Standouts were the Mango Wit and Belgian Blonde. Also, the flight setup was super cute/fun/interesting/different (choose your adjective). All of the seating is outside, with a tiered patio/deck, making it a great spot to enjoy on a beautiful day. Covered seating on the patio/deck is heated, so don’t let the cold months keep you inside! There’s lots of space, so it’s a great spot for groups. Staff is super friendly and knowledgeable, which we love from a brewery - no pretension here! We didn’t order the pizza, but took a peek at other tables and it looked and smelled amazing. If logos are your thing, Ponysaurus has a great logo. Kudos on branding. PLUS: parking. We love to see it.

Google
The beer and pizza are really good, garlic knots are *ok* but the service is not great by any means. That goes for the bar & the kitchen. Luckily the food is mostly self service but the experience picking it up at the counter and asking for a side of ranch was met with an eye roll and a back turn. Otherwise it’s a great place to come hangout!

Yelp
Definitely recommend Ponysaurus ! We love this place. One of our favorite places in Durham to hangout in any weather. Their exterior lighting is beautiful. Outside seating with fire pits, covered patio if it's raining . Pizza, salad, and wings are amazing. Full bar with delicious cocktails and my favorite cider beer. If you haven't been it's a must.

Yelp
Came here recently on a tour of the different breweries in the area and had a good time. I'm not sure if Ponysaurus has its own parking lot, but we ended up parking in a nearby lot that costs $5 for one hour, which was probably a huge ripoff but whatever. Anyway, I ended up getting a flight, and the beer was pretty solid! Not my favorite in the area, but not bad at all. I really liked the vibes in the outdoor area as well. Ponysaurus seemed very kid friendly, with lots of families hanging out. Granted, we came in the mid afternoon, so I'm not sure if things change later in the evening. I didn't get a chance to try the pizza this time but I'm definitely intrigued for next time! Overall, I enjoyed my visit here and would definitely come back.

Yelp
Clean, airy space with an open layout that turns cozy in the evenings thanks to warm backyard lighting. Ordering pizza is quick and hassle-free. The beer? Crisp, flavorful, and clearly top quality.

Tory M.

Yelp
Not only is the beer good, but the pizza is awesome! Ponysaurus is pet friendly and has a nice outdoor seating area. The pizza was incredible and arguably the best around. The garlic knots were good but they were dry. If they were loaded with fresh garlic and oil (wet) they would easily be the best in the area. We will definitely return.

Yelp
Whenever I go home and visit my friends in NC especially during the holidays, we meet at Ponysaurus for beers and their amazing pizzas! They have a huge outdoor space with two floors of seating. The beers are very high quality, local brews and they serve hot Neapolitan pizza. They are have these little snack bowls they sell if you're not super hungry. If you're looking for a cute first date or hanging out with friends this is the spot. They have a lot of street parking and a parking area for designated drivers! An easy spot to uber to from downtown Durham as well.

Yelp
My husband and I are partaking in the Bull City Beer Challenge. Since we also love fall, we took a Friday afternoon off and decided to visit 3 or 4 on the list. This was our third stop. We've been to six on the list and this has been our favorite so far. There is street parking all around and free parking "lot" in front. It does fill up pretty quickly but we were able to find a spot really close to the entrance which was nice. All of the seating was outside...which on a day like we had, was absolutely perfect. The bartender was friendly and easily answered all of our questions. We also spoke to a manager after witnessing an interaction he had with a panhandler that entered the brewery. If it had not had happened right in front of us, we would not have known it happened. It was a quiet confrontation and the manager was calm and kept it from escalating. We were very impressed. I got a flight which consisted of four, 4 oz pours. I got the Chocolate Stout, Export Stout, Scottish Ale, and Golden Ale. I liked all of my choices, but the Chocolate Stout was my favorite. In fact, I liked it so much that this has been the only beer so far that I have purchased to take home! AND my husband really liked the pint glasses here so we bought one of those as well. We will definitely be returning to this establishment. We thoroughly enjoyed it!

Yelp
Such a fun place with great outdoor seating and wonderful beer!!! The service was excellent and everyone loved their drinks. Would absolutely go back!
google avatar

Kelsey C.

Yelp
Awesome place to catch up with friends. The outdoor part is dog friendly. For food they have good looking pizza and snacks so cute. Would recommend the biere de garde for beer. They have a wide selection of drinks besides beer if you're into that.
google avatar

Savannah K.

Yelp
Ponysaurus has great vibes and is the perfect spot to grab some brews and catch up with friends. The tables are all primarily outside with TVs if you want to watch a game. The beer was all decent but I wasn't overly impressed with the line ups. The bartender wasn't the most friendly and was very short with me. I got the caesar salad bites & they did not disappoint.

Yelp
How things have changed and stayed the same since I wrote my first review 8 years ago. The space is still great with firepits and picnic tables (and the beer has remained consistently good). They do have heaters on the first floor of the patio which work great in colder weather! However, now that there are more businesses in the area parking is a problem and lots of people don't realize that the traffic in the parking lot is one way. Pony now offers pizza (which is really good) so you cannot bring in other outside food. I do wish you could get takeout from Mezcalito or that they would have a food truck every once and a while to have other options. I've seen management come and go and entire turnovers of staff (who are always friendly but some clearly have more experience than others). They also now offer beer cocktails (that I don't think are very good but I do like the cider in the winter). They have Geeks Who Drink trivia on Mondays with a fairly regular crowd and their run club is popular as well. And they are still very dog friendly!
google avatar

Natasha M.

Yelp
Come for the vibes and the great pizza and brews. We are regulars in the warm weather to come hang outside. It feels like a community space for everyone. The bar snacks are great nostalgic throwbacks. And we love the pizza (especially with Calabrian chilis). Sometimes the pizza takes a while and they don't notify when it's ready, but overall still a great, laid-back experience.

Yelp
Ponysaurus is one of Durham's popular craft breweries. They are mostly outdoor seating. They do have covered seating for when the weather doesn't cooperate. I got a flight of 4 beers and my dad chose a pint of another. Ponysaurus was recommended by both Yelp's feature collection and my neighbor. They have a good selection of beers and you can smell the hops at the bar. That told me this is the real deal. Bar service was a tad slow but I expected that since the weather was good and people want to hang out. I'll definitely be back again.
google avatar

Yelp
Went here with a group on a Friday and it was very good. They have options for beer and wine as well as food. They do not just have pizza, so you can also order a salad. If you go with a big group, you can order individually so no need to split the tab. When your food is ready, you can go to the side window and eat at any of the tables. We ordered the margarita pizza and it was excellent. We also had the blue cheese with apple and it was also very good. Would definitely go back.

Yelp
One of my favorite breweries! My women's soccer team visited on a Monday evening in October and I was surprised how busy it was. They have so many picnic tables and spots for large or small groups. The upstairs area is covered which we ended up needing since it started drizzling a little. They had trivia and some throwback Boyz 2 Men music the Monday we visited. So many fun and delicious beers to choose from! A must visit in Durham!!
google avatar

Rachel S.

Yelp
Ponysaurus is a great brewery!! Amazing beers, kombucha, and pizza place attached. My friends and I like to go to Trivia night and order pizzas and they have AMAZING garlic knots. Highly recommend, especially as the weather is getting warmer. Majority of seating is outdoors first floor and second floor seating. Bartenders and pizza servers are friendly and helpful. You can order food on the app and you'll get a text to your phone when it's ready.

Yelp
Stopped here before a Duke football game and it was great! Had some great pizza and the beer was good.

Martin Q.

Yelp
Good Beer, good pizza, good people. What's else? We spent a great evening with the family. We ordered 3 pizzas the 1st one : sopressata, cheese, spicy honey. 2nd one with peaches, ricotta, basil and balsamic reduction. , 3rd: pineapple, bacon and jalapeno. And, of course beers. You order everything at the counter, there's no table service.
google avatar

Yelp
Great weather today. This is a great place to hang out with family and friends. Lots of outdoor space. The beer is delicious. Lots of choices and something for everyone. We tried 3 different pizzas and they were all delicious. The crust was the best I've had in a long time. Unique toppings were also a hit with our group. Give them a try- you will be glad you did.

Yelp
One of my favorite breweries in Durham. While I had read multiple reviews about bad service, I had the complete opposite experience. The staff was welcoming, patient, and helpful despite the place being busy. They even threw in an extra glass to my flight for free so that I could try another seasonal brew. I tried the pilsner, cider, gose, and lager and honestly loved all of them! We also tried the pizza and cinnamon knots which were incredible! The outdoor seating was superb for a beautiful spring day and even though there was music playing I was still able to converse with friends without having to yell.

S S.

Yelp
Seriously good beer and pizza. Had a Rye Pale, softer (and tastier without the overwhelming hop of an IPA), but still a bit peppery from the rye. Delicious. Went to the Export Stout for #2 and, as the bartender said, "like Guinness, but better." Yep. Place was chill, and bartender let us try a few till we zeroed in on what worked for us. Grabbed a couple of "scoops" of "bartender mix" (basci club mix), a bit pricey at $2/per) to nibble on while we drank. Sat outside on a beautiful evening and ordered a few pizzas. The basic cheese pizza was the winner over the somewhat sparse marguerite. Ordered "cheesy bread" which was basically a simply mozz pizza with tomato dipping sauce. Win for the kids. The only thing that dissapointed was the meh wine... clearly most people aren't there for that. Def will be back

Yelp
Back for round two amazing! We love this place even better now! The bartenders are the bomb! They ate and left no crumbs! Totally worth the drive from Chapel Hill!. whether you eat inside upstairs or outdoors, even in the pouring rain, this place is amazing!
google avatar

Raumak R.

Yelp
Love this place! On a trip visiting family and our hosts brought us to ponysaurus for a quick bite. Super casual environment with some of the most amazing pizza I've ever had. I'm from La so I tend to be a food snob, I was super impressed with all the food here. And the service was spectacular. My favorite item on the menu was their garlic knots. The service was also amazing. The staff were super nice and friendly. Also, you have to try their snacks at the bar. Worth coming back for!!

B B.

Yelp
We had not visited Ponysaurus in a long time. When we used to go there the outdoor atmosphere was suited for children. It seems now that they are trying to rid the space of children as my 11 year old daughter was asked to sit down by a waitress and the same waitress mumbled under her breath towards our party to "control your kids". I guess the point of my review is a sad one, as 5-10 years ago all were welcome at Ponysaurus, but today if you have children you should look for a different venue.

Yelp
Dog friendly outdoor space. Picnic tables for group get togethers. Great pizza. Good beer too.
google avatar

Andrea L.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots in Durham to grab a beer with friends. It is very pet friendly and they have mostly outdoor spaces but most of it is covered during the wintertime with heaters.

Yelp
Went to Ponysaurus for a quick drink and bite before heading to a meeting on Thursday. I'd heard great things about Ponysaurus and was so excited to check it out. I love the outdoor space with tons of seating and spots for pups! I went inside and asked to check out two of their beers. I was provided samples and decided to get their gose, which was very tart, but had tons of flavor and a little hint of sweetness that I liked. To eat I got their garlic knots, which was huge! They came tossed in tons of red peppers and tomatoes and a yummy marinara sauce on the side. There was no way I could eat all of it so I took a lot of it home. It was just too good to leave there. So, minus two stars for the lackluster service. The person that assisted me at the bar was not very welcoming and was very short and rude to me when I asked about the wifi. He did not seem like he wanted to be there. As a server myself, I understand you have bad days, but sometimes you have to leave stuff at home and focus on the customer and providing good service. This missed the mark big time for me and despite the good food and beer did not make me want to return.
google avatar

Deedrah B.

Yelp
Cool spot for grabbing a quick drink. Plenty of outdoor seating and good selection of beers and wine. There is also a pizza place nearby/partnered for delivery if you want food. I like the decor and vibe of the place, very relaxed/laid back. And the staff was positive/friendly.
google avatar

Sonam S.

Yelp
This is such a great spot for when the weather is warming up! They have PLENTY of seating which is really important for me especially when the weather gets nice. Parking is also super easy! Their selection is great and their staff was able to help me and even let me try a couple of beers before I picked the one I wanted. Their idea of $1 snacks is so neat and very well received. The perfect finger food/munchies while enjoying a nice beer. I have been to many breweries but this was is by far one of my favorites!
google avatar

Phylicia R.

Yelp
This is a cute brewery that you can order pizza at as well. There's indoor & outdoor seating. Outside they had heat lamps for when it's cold. The people working there were very friendly. You can get a sample of something that catches your eye. I ordered a Cabernet for myself. The guy working had me try a warm wine, which literally smelled like Christmas. It was more of a warm sangria as he explained. Very good! I will have to go again and try that. Overall it's a nice place to hang out get some drinks & enjoy your company or go alone and make new friends!

Kayla B.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to sit outside and enjoy a beer. Lots of outdoor seating. Usually pretty busy but the staff moves people through the line quickly.
google avatar

Dani C.

Yelp
What a lovely place to go on a Friday night! The pizza was really good and I was a fan of the hibiscus cider. Self ordering system but service at the bar was great!
google avatar

Denise H.

Yelp
Anyone who has read my reviews-you know already! I didn't try any of the food or snacks but the service was great and so were the beers! Parking-well that might get a little tricky on a night that's busier than when I was there. My people enjoyed the pizza but I can't say one way or another. But the brews I tried were great and when I'm back in the area I would definitely visit again!
google avatar

Sarah P.

Yelp
This is a wonderful brewery in downtown Durham. The actually brewery is a mix of indoor/outdoor seating, although the outdoor seating is well heated on the decks and there are plenty of fire pits around in the yard. While we didn't have anything to eat here, the pizza smelled wonderful. The beer (Pilsner) we had was great and I plan to come back next time I'm in the Triangle
google avatar

Jessica W.

Yelp
Excellent brewery. Beer is great, food is flavorful, service is top notch, and location/vibes are immaculate. Was very impressed with everything- including the cute Ponysaurus mascot and the random/jokester marketing used across the brand.

Stephen H.

Yelp
Good beer. Good pizza. Nice ambiance eating from the upper level overlooking the shaded compound and its entrance from the street.
google avatar

Sweta S.

Yelp
We came for beer and pizza! Omomom. While a little pricey, the food, beer, service, and ambiance were great. It was a bustling Friday night with firepits and heat lamps set up, people waking up with dogs, and groups of people ordering beers. We had a pizza with pepperoni, anchovies, and olives. We took off the anchovies ;). But, we really like the pizza, reminiscent of Italian pizza. We also had the garlic bread knots. An important tip is that the oil and garlic mixture pooled at the bottom of the bowel. I will come again! This is a great place to come on a casual date night or with a group of friends.
google avatar

Lucy D.

Yelp
The pizza at Ponysaurus is hands down 5 stars, but based on the limited beer selection I am rating it 4 stars. If you enjoy white pizza, theirs is really good! The beer menu is small, and while they do change the beers from time to time, I've come several times and tried a lot of their beers and haven't found one I like. There is a great outdoor area with picnic tables, and you can bring dogs. I would definitely come back, but only if I'm planning on getting the pizza - not for just beers. Also - disclaimer that I am born and raised in NYC and can be snobby about pizza. But this is one of the best pizzas I've had in the area.
google avatar

Alyssa R.

Yelp
Come for the beer/drinks, stay for their delicious pizza and sides. My favorite appetizers are the Caesar salad and Burrata, and any of the pizzas are delicious. I opt for the classic Margarita because it highlights the quality ingredients used! You will also experience some of the nicest staff there is and the service is impeccable! It's never too noisy and there is plenty of seating, even for you fur babies (dogs)!
google avatar

Tina W.

Yelp
This place seemed to pack with Duke students all the time on weekends. Everytime I am here, its packed, there's a long line and it is super loud. Based on the hype there, you just always set the expectation high. However, not really. Tried their seasonal sour beer which is too dry. Had their food, meeh Service: nah. ugh
google avatar

Laura N.

Yelp
Loved this brewery, it's energy, outdoor seating, option to order delish pizza (kale pizza was awesome), and the BEER were amazing!
google avatar

James H.

Yelp
I'm serious when I say that Ponysaurus was one of the highlights of our time in Raleigh/Durham, NC. We pulled up in search of some beer before making our way to another brewery close by for dinner (& more beer) -- we had to seriously refrain from ordering the pizza at Ponysaurus because it looked like something we shouldn't pass up on! We did get a few of the snacks that everyone else seemed to be ordering with their beers (swedish fish & homemade chex mix) & we did order the ceaser salad with the third round of drinks we ordered! Everything was delicious and this place had a really nice vibe to it! I'd say the only thing that was missing was some live music or trivia (something interactive/engaging).
google avatar

Sky T.

Yelp
Christmas lights are up and in the festive spirit! This is a really cool brewery to check out and all the lights really will put you in a good mood. The beer is on point too as expected so no complaints there. They have two levels and pretty much is all outdoors so good for social distancing as well.
google avatar

Scott J.

Yelp
This is my favorite brewery in Durham. Their beer is always good. Now they finally serve food on-site. The pizza is great! Such a fun place to hang out with some friends. When the fire pits and heaters on the patio, you can hang out year round.
google avatar

Shantael M.

Yelp
Great service. Pizza definitely a unique experience and unique flavor combinations. Delivery? You'll have to warm up the pizza in the oven. Doesn't stay hot very long.
google avatar

Juan Q.

Yelp
Pony is my favourite place in Durham. Typically have ~10 beers on tap from sours to pilsners to IPAs and they always have a cheeky seasonal brew on rotation. The outdoor space is great for enjoying your friends company without getting Coronavirus, and they outfitted the outdoor section with heaters for the winter months. They also sell beer in six packs and cases to go because you will want to enjoy this at home. I personally keep some of their Gosé in my fridge at all times. Come for a drink, birthday party, bar mitzvah, date, or any other special or non-special event. There's never a bad occasion to Pony.

Nicki G.

Yelp
This pizza with spicy peppers and honey was sooooo good!!! Love love loved it and it had great flavor

Sean S.

Yelp
Super fun atmosphere. Good for having a get together. Good pizza. Not great for food variety. Pizza only. Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Yajaira J.

Yelp
I like to come here often for their great beer selection and pizza. Although this place is entirely outdoors and very dog friendly, just make sure you have someone without a dog to take your order since dogs are not allowed there.
google avatar

Tim J.

Yelp
I love the brewery! The atmosphere is great. The people are friendly. The beer is amazing. And the food is incredible. Some of the best pizza I've had. We have gone back many time and always bring visitors. Highly recommend.
