Poon’s at Somerset House - Review - Strand - London - The Infatuation

"Taking a space in Somerset House’s New Wing will be Poon’s, aChineserestaurant which carries a lot of weight in its name. Once upon a time, Amy Poon’s father, Bill, ran Chinese restaurants across London including an acclaimed Covent Garden location. After several successful pop-ups herself, she’s re-establishing the family brand with a restaurant serving Chinese home cooking." - Jake Missing

The boiled chicken was incredibly tender and flavourful, especially with the two different sauces. The vegetable pickles were so refreshing and tasty, too! I really loved the silken tofu, such a delicate flavour and texture. And the deep-fried sesame prawns were absolutely delicious. One of my favourite parts of the meal was the unique tea pot that I’d never seen anything like it! Check out the video. It was so nice of the lovely owners, a husband-and-wife team, to greet us, and one of them even demonstrated how the tea pot works. I can’t wait to go back and try other dishes especially the wonton soup which looked really good.

We started with the sausage roll, pickles, and nuts. The sausage roll was genuinely excellent — easily the highlight of the meal — but unfortunately the pickles had a very unpleasant, almost off-putting taste. For mains, the clay pot was fairly average and didn’t leave much of an impression. The duck salad lacked flavour, which was disappointing, while the ginger noodles were tasty and enjoyable. I did try to order pot luck rice but they apparently didn’t have it on (despite saying available after 9pm). The cocktails were another let-down: very small portions and extremely strong, to the point where they weren’t particularly pleasant to drink. On the positive side, the service was superb throughout — attentive, friendly, and professional — and the atmosphere was nice and relaxed. One major downside was the counter seating. It’s very uncomfortable; my back was aching after about half an hour, and you’re seated extremely close to other diners, which feels awkward rather than convivial. Overall, some real highs with the service and a few dishes, but several elements fell short of expectations.

I was really excited to visit the brand new Poons and the starter was delicious. The first half hour ticked the impressed box. However, the mains we chose were a complete disappointment. Both dishes tasted so bland with aesthetics to match. The dining room was gorgeous, the staff were delightful, the food underwhelming

Opening night at the new restaurant in Somerset House. Poons is Cantonese comfort food in London. Lovely warm welcome from the team there, with the added bonus of Amy Poon doing the rounds to ensure everything was perfect. Her partner was also there, ensuring all the guests felt at ease. Taking guidance from the team there I ordered a variety of dishes, with a robust wine to wash it down. All were delicious, with the bill at the end pretty good value for an establishment like this. As this dinner brought me back to childhood and happiness in so many ways, you’ve made me a regular on this one visit alone. Thank you for having me.

A elegant vibe in Poon’s at Somerset House. I had a lovely lunch with my family there. The foods are amazing. Especially the duck salad, the fermented tofu sauce with veggies, the steamed pork and my favourite prawn wontons (forgot to take photo). Actually every dish are tasty! Also the drinks menu I can see Poon’s team makes a lot of effort in this. There is rarely places in london that we can choose our favourite tea with our meals.

Stunning place, the attention to detail covers every inch with tasteful storytelling. The food was authentic and a very unique take on Chinese dishes. The staff were so lovely and Amy was such a wonderful host. A truly special place in London like nowhere else.

Perfect food in a beautiful setting with attentive service. The duck salad was delicious, the wontons were perfect and the steamed pork was so tender! Really cannot fault it! Will be back again for sure!

Had such a great meal here! The food was delicious, everything was fresh, full of flavour and cooked perfectly. Absolutely beautiful room as well and the atmosphere was relaxed but still had a nice buzz. Definitely check out the wine list (great Somme so ask for recommendations). Honestly, it’s one of the best meals I’ve had in a while, I can’t wait to come back!
