Service was great Atmosphere was great Food was pretty decent. My last bite though of my burger the meat was so charred. It couldn’t even swallow it. Thankfully the entire rest of the burger was great.

Google
If you’re looking to get more traditional chopped steak go somewhere else, apparently this is their version of chopped steak. Meat wasn’t even seasoned.

There’s a couple things that I go to this specific poor boy for and it is either a hotdog or a Gyro. I went to a place called Gyro shack couple weeks ago and it was terrible. This is a real.

Jesus Santiago

Google
I stop at this place every time after my VA visits. The best Chicago Dogs and Gyros I've had in a long time. Nice portion of fries too at a reasonable price.

Elliot Ecstasy

Google
Chili dog and butter garlic fries and a drink, it felt a little bit pricey for what it was, $11.69, but it tasted really good.

The service was quick and courteous, the guys hooked us up with the food! Generous portions, clean atmosphere. I was in town from out of state, and I was craving hometown food. I am more than satisfied. Thanks guys!😊

Love the food here. Took my wife and kids here to enjoy some burgers and fries, just talk about great taste. Nothing less than satisfied with the last bite. I always came here after work on my way home. Great workers and everyone is polite and service is fast. Enjoy the onion rings and garlic fries.

Google
I’m from out of town, looked for a place to grab something quick, and it seemed like an easy choice over Burger King next door. Food portion on the Chicken Philly was huge, it had some actual heft to it. Could have used a bit of seasoning on the veggies, but the chicken was good. Fries were fantastic, I couldn’t stop eating them, and it was very much like Five Guys, I had more fries in the bag, than in the container. I thought the food quality exceeded the price I paid. If given the opportunity, I’d go back to try other items on their menu.

Yelp
I visited Poor Boy because I was hungry, and in the mood to try something featured on their menu after leaving a nearby park. The interest in visiting has always been there because I work nearby and ever since I tried their fries which were ordered by my coworker, I wanted to visit. Poor Boy sits along Roosevelt Rd in a high traffic area in Maywood. The parking lot itself is private with an acceptable number of parking spaces available. While pulling my vehicle into a parking space, I could not ignore the smell of the food looming in the air which built anticipation to enter. Once I entered, I stood in a line which gave me time to browse the menu as the customer ahead of me ordered. After the customer ordered, the employee took my order, giving off an enthusiastic vibe in the process. Here I was thinking that I would visit and order just fries, but nope! That changed once I saw the fish sandwich on the menu as an option. I was asked by the employee if I wanted the combo instead and I accepted! Now best believe I was not going to visit Poor Boy and not order those delicious fries that my coworker knows that I love. My order was completed in no more than 8 minutes, and I was well on my way. I opted out of dine-in, choosing to take my order to go because I did not want to be in the area long. We all know how terrible the traffic is in the area, and I had no interest in being out in it. Moreover, the restaurant appeared decently clean, and the atmosphere gave off a fast-food restaurant vibe. And inside, there were an acceptable number of tables with seats inside of the dining area. Upon getting inside of my vehicle I could not resist eating those fresh tasting fries before even driving out of the parking space, tehehe. It was a good thing that I had them in my lap eating them because they helped calm my nerves while being amongst impatient drivers along Roosevelt Rd. I swear! The elastic on my panties is wearing out from having to pull them up, just to deal with impatient drivers on the road. I must admit that food cures anything, but I do wish that the employees did not chunk extra un-bagged loose fries inside of the bag, burying my fish sandwich underneath in the process. I mean come on, sheesh! The first bite of the fish sandwich left me with a mouth full of fish, lettuce, tomato, and tartar sauce! However, the first words out of my mouth after swallowing that first bite was, "Mmm, that is good!". I have to say that the fish sandwich swayed the rating I had intended on giving Poor Boy because of those loose fries. I am glad that I finally considered visiting because it would have prolonged the chance of tasting their fish sandwich. I could very well re-visit and order from Poor Boy again because it sits in an area that I frequent. Whenever that visit depends on the craving of my tastebuds at the time. Service: 4 | Ambiance: 3 1/2 | Food: 4 Recommendations: greek salad, garden salad, fish sandwich, shrimp dinner, fries. ~ Oh darling, let's be adventurers ~ Thomas G

Yelp
We wanted some late night dinner and we searched yelp for something on the way that was open late and was good because most of the fast food places around the area had less than three stars. I'm really glad that we tried poor boy. We walked in past 11 PM and they had the lobby closed so you had to order through a speaker through like a glass window so there's no indoor or outdoor seating past a certain time. I'm guessing for safety. The menu is pretty big, but we scrolled through yelp beforehand just to see what we liked and kind of had an idea walking in so we ordered our food and I would say it took no more than 10 minutes to get it. We took it back to the hotel and the super that we ordered was massive. It's enough for two people to share. In my opinion. The bread was really fresh and the ingredients tasted fresh as well. I'm not sure if it was the condiments or maybe they put oil on the sandwich but I don't think it would last a second day because the bread was starting to get soggy, but it tasted really good. The size of the garlic fries was also great. We were able to share that and it tasted so garlic and delicious. It also had a seasoning I think it was Cajun but not sure because it wasn't spicy but that tasted good too. I wish I could've eaten both more fresh, but unfortunately, we had to take it back to the hotel But the fries and the sandwich still tasted great an hour later.

Yelp
Poor Boy is a nice place to get lunch in Maywood, and definitely a great place for lunch if you're on your way to Brookfield Zoo down the street. The Italian beef sandwiches are great, and the gyro platter is massive and delicious as well. They give you a ton of food, and the service is friendly. There isn't a bad thing on the menu, it's all great and much cheaper than eating at the zoo. It's very small inside for dine in but definitely a nice quick, fresh fast food place to check out. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Needed lunch, saw this and checked the Yelp reviews. Nice to get something local. I had an Italian beef with sausage. Small place, small lot, be careful going in and out. Nothing fancy, but clean and comfy seating. Great service. And the food? Excellent. Big bun, overflowing with beef, and somewhere underneath a big, good sausage. Be prepared to answer "wet or dry?" (Dipped in jus or not.) I went wet, which is a little messier but also tastier. Sandwich held together well, in the wrapper. And OMG. So good. I also asked for spicy, so there was giardinera on top. Not super hot, but added some zip. Prices were reasonable. Food was up quick. Left more than just full, left satisfied and with great tastes still in my mouth.

Yelp

Yelp
I've been going to this restaurant for many many years. This is an always will be one of my favorite go to fast food restaurants. Always have great service,. I've only had their chicken and fish products, never disappointed. The ambience is your standard fast food restaurant. keep up the good work Poor Boy.

Yelp
i visited this location on a whim because I wanted something a little different around the holidays. The service here is fast, and the staff very professional, although the location may not look like much. The bathrooms are for customers only, and are nice and clean. The food was excellent, and served quickly! Looking forward to visit this location again when I'm in Chicago

Yelp
I wish I had a photo of that hot beef sandwich. Better than any "Po'Boy" I ever had in New Orleans. Perfect combination of sliced beef, peppers, onions, and some sausage. Getting dipped in au jus, I thought it might be a mess to eat after it was wrapped up for take out, but it soaked perfectly into the bread and meat and was the perfect texture without falling apart on the ride home. Shoestring fries are fried to a soft and mushy texture (which I personally like- but you may not if you want crunchy.)

Bill O.

Yelp
Smelled so goo d while sitting at the stop light, I decided to stop in. Had the gyro. Probably the worst gyro I've had in a long time. The meat was hard and crusty. The pita bread was good. The sauce was flavorless, but at least they gave me extra for free. The soda was watery and flat. Very disappointed

Christopher G.

Yelp
Food was prompt and fresh. Reasonably priced, and friendly service. I have always thought this was better than Portillos and try to support the Capitalist local owner, however this place needs repairs and the food is not as good as it was a couple years ago. Focus!

Shvbbv R.

Yelp
This place is always on point. My go to is the gymshoe sandwich and some fries. The subs here always hit but don't sleep on their grill Game. Grilled chicken sandwich is great and the fries (similar to McDonald's in style) are usually good.
google avatar

Stacy K.

Yelp
The food here is ok, the service is pretty fast. I ordered a King Tuna submarine and a Gyro. I received my food so fast I couldn't believe it. This place is like your average neighborhood food place that sales pizza puffs, chicken tenders and submarines. When I visited they had the inside door locked but you could still order through the window. Luckily you weren't out in the cold ordering, you could stand inside the door for your order. I hadn't been to a place like this (locked doors) in a long while but the place seemed popular so I was excited to try their food. The food was just ok but as I said they are fast. If I'm ever hungry and in their area again, I would probably try something else on their menu.

Yelp
If you are going to the zoo or to maybe The Galloping Ghost from points north, you will probably drive by Poor Boy and think "there ain't no way I'm grabbing chow from that dump." This would be a mistake. I came by for dinner last week and had the beef with a side of fries and a soda. For $9.52, I got my money's worth--tasty, tender beef, salty, perfectly-cooked fries and enough pure Mountain Dew to have the heartattack this meal should have triggered. It's not pretty inside, but it does the job for most sensible people on the go...and there's a parking lot big enough to serve the needs of the people most of the day. And, they take AMEX! (From the outside, I was getting that "cash only" feeling.) Will definitely be coming back here with my kids the next time we go to the zoo.

Brian H.

Yelp
Great grilled chicken sandwich. Great flavor, not overpowering like some places have. Fresh toppings and possibly the largest grilled chicken sandwich I've had!
google avatar

Melissa C.

Yelp
They must sprinkle crack on their grilled chicken sandwiches. I crave them always. I'll drive past and won't even be hungry but I'm looking at the huge POOR BOY sign like dang, "could sure go for one of them right now". The fries are almost as good as McDonald's fries and reminiscent of them. Don't like their pizza puffs because they're flat and boring The subs are good. I get mine warm The salads are a good choice also. Bone Apple Tea:)

Yelp
Excellent Turkey Submarine and Italian Beef. A must go and try you would be pleased for sure!!!!

Yelp
Food pretty Ok. Greasy spoon. Not friendly staff, at all. Hot dogs are decent. Beefs ok.

Yelp
I love the food here. My friends and I decided to give this place a try and we are surprised. This is the best fast-food restaurant here in this whole area of Maywood. Their burgers are amazing, meaty, tasty, and delicious. Their veggies are fresh and good. Their fries are crispy and flavorful. Their gyro is meaty and overloaded. They also have plenty of combos and promos. Everything here was amazing! They made their food cooked to perfection and all of it was made to order. They will literally serve it to you while it is hot. The whole place is huge, their counter is wide, and you can clearly see their menu at the front. They have plenty of tables and chairs. They also have outdoor seating with an umbrella. Their parking lot is not that big but can still easily park and go. The location of this place is very accessible and you can easily find them if you are nearby. They have big signage on the outside of their store. You can visit this place anytime you want. You can also go to their drive-thru and order your food quickly. Poor Boy is a very convenient and cozy place. Absolutely fantastic spot to visit! Whenever I am near their location, I can't stop myself from visiting this place, I am definitely in love with their gyros and burgers. Hopefully, next time I can bring my friends and family here and treat them. This Poor Boy fast-food restaurant is perfect for special occasions or events. The ambiance and vibe of the place are top-notch. I can't wait to have a free time and visit this place again. I want to explore their menu and try new offers they have. Thank you Poor Boy for giving us such an awesome service and experience. Well done!

Yelp
Would not complain if this was the only restaurant open on earth. Chicken on pita, grilled chicken Greek salad are my go to orders. Don't be that guy who passes this place up. Having a craving right now as I type this

Yelp
Stopped by here after a quick stop filling in gas. It seems like an established place and also well-known to the locals here. I had the Reuben here which was pretty standard. They seem to know what they're doing. It is a good place for take out and on the go meal.

Yelp
I love Poor Boys I mean like I really do. I would go often but on my last visit I was flabbergasted. I ordered my usual sub sandwich and decided to try a gyros as well. I picked the wrong day/time to order a gyros. The meat was PINKISH .... gyros that hasn't been on the spin thing is usually more grey which can indicate that the meat hasn't been cooking long. SO I would ask to put the meat on the grill to cook it a lil more at least until it gets a lil brown. We get our many sandwiches we ordered and went on about our business. We get to our destination, I took the gyros out the bag, picked it up to put to my mouth and was taken aback. A smell I'd NEVER smelled before. I was almost sickened upon looking closer that meat just LOOKED different up close. I've been eating gyros for WELL over 20 years and I have NEVER experienced such a thing. I asked others to smell so that I could be certain, it wasn't just me. We all(a total of 3) were frown faced saying "ewe" what is that?. At that point all I could do was toss the WHOLE sandwich with NOT one bite taken. Talk about disappointed .... We where too far gone to turn back. I was so very outdone cause I love POOR BOYS Sub sandwiches but I can't help but wonder. However, I would never order another. Oh and BTW the so-called manager was there calling shots over things but he LET THAT AWFUL MEAT BE SERVED to his customers. I wonder who else ordered gyros that day 2/12/22 and what happened. Who knows what "spoiled" gyros meat smells like? I do and boy it can never be denied. I learned something new that day.

Yelp
The gyro sandwich was excellent! The fries were cooked just right. My wife and I will be returning

Yelp
Not much to look at, but they come through where it counts...Food and customer service!! Great dogs, fries, gyros and their Steak sandwich is one of the best I've tried!! Give this place a try...

Adrian A.

Yelp
They hook you up with fries!!!! I'll give it 10 stars. Great job boys!!!! No ketchup on hot dogs! Have a great meal!
google avatar

Carissa G.

Yelp
Best. Salad. Ever!!!!!!! I am in love with grilled Greek chicken salad. No matter what time of day I order it, it is always fresh and delicious. I usually get extra chicken. So much I can add more lettuce and a second salad next day.

Zaïre D.

Yelp
First heard of this place in High School. Spent my entire weekly allowance in this place every week! Been coming back ever since. I know the owners very well as they have watched me grow up over the years. Great quick food, and never cooked below value! Great brothers and great staff. Ever need a quick bite, try the Grilled Chicken on Pita, it's a staple!

Yelp
On Roosevelt Road in Maywood sits a decent sized fast food eatery called Poor Boy. I'd driven past it quite a few times and finally took the time to stop in. Near where I live in Wheaton is a place called "Poor Boy II", I strongly suspect that these two eateries are completely unrelated. Heading in I noticed that there was a decent amount of seating and one large counter to order at. In visiting I decided to go for a hot dog and fries. The hot dog here came on a classic Chicago style poppy seed bun. The sausage was skinless There was a thick not particularly long pickle here, this pickle slice created several problems. First off it was thick enough to where if you bite into it, the pickle flavor easily overpowers everything else, and it's not long enough to get pickle in every bite. A thinner longer pickle slice would be preferable to what was used here. There was also one thick tomato slice, this created a similar problem as it was short and very thick, one big burst of tomato flavor and then nothing for the rest of the hot dog. The mustard, relish were adequately applied but the onion was a little lacking. There was no noticeable celery salt on the dog but there were quite a few sport peppers. The fries were thin McDonalds like fries, they were crispy and whatever they were cooked in gave a nice flavor to them. A fair number of hot dog stands I've visited use these same style of fries and they're usually pretty good, this was no exception. Overall I'd say these were excellent fries to compliment a hot dog. My experience at Poor Boy was that this place while inexpensive isn't for poor boys only. The food was average and it's close by it wouldn't be a bad place to stop. But if you're willing to drive a little further better options do exist. I am going to give Poor Boy three stars as it's an average Chicago style eatery.
google avatar

Michelle T.

Yelp
When you're feelin frugal this is the spot to hit up. You get so much bang for your buck and can't go wrong with any of the combo deals! Everything here is so good! Even though they compete with BK and Portillos down the street, Poor Boy holds it down. Gyros are just ok compared to Tom's Carry Out nearby so I usually don't go for that. I generally stick to subs, burgers, or dogs!
google avatar

Cindy J.

Yelp
Best gyros... would hope hey bring back the pork souvlaki!!! Was surprised at how good everything was!!!
google avatar

Timmy B.

Yelp
this place is the worst philly steak I ever had, Also the gyro is the dryest cold not even warm and the gyro sauce is terrible if u like fries And ketchup for around $8.00 or $9.00 then u hit the jack-pot, I mean my dogs couldn't say it but they defiantly had better, I don't like to bash anybody's business but they shouldent even have these thing on their menu I saw other reviews right here on yelp those people who think the philly steak or gyros R good well they must have Ben drunk or have really bad tast they should try Tom's gyros on Harlem and 39th and fire house grill for philly steaks witch R ok but they still put Poor boys to shame
google avatar

Beken P.

Yelp
Love eating here. The food is usually pretty good and fresh. Never had an issue or complaint about this place. You could say It's a local favorite.
google avatar

Chante G.

Yelp
This is your typical "cheat day" food joint. I really like the variety of sandwiches that they offer. I found that the Philly sandwich had plenty of meat and onions and could easily be shared. I would definitely say order ahead if you are planning to go for lunch though, as this place can get fairly busy and you might wait a while otherwise, but the staff seemed focused on making the entrees and were fairly efficient. The salads were a bit of a "meh" for me, but I assume that a place like this is more know for their sandwiches anyway. Definitely a good spot for a greasy treat when you are passing by.
google avatar

Anna G.

Yelp
I always order their pastrami sandwich. It's very good and fast service. I have no complaints. A go to for American style food.
google avatar

Nelson M.

Yelp
Restaurant update: This continues to be the best grease joint in the area next to Portillos. It has a leg up on the competition due to the combo meals. Please read my prior review for all the details. The specials are valid for lunch and dinner which includes your meal and a drink. So these are my comments on the different types of foods I have tried: 1. Italian sausage- average size, reheated on the grill. Great tasting on french bread 2. Philly steak- compact, small but cooked fresh on the grill with ribeye and cheese 3. Gyro sandwich- hot off the spit, very greasy but good with the gyro sauce 4. Double cheeseburger- Simply number 1, so much meat and grease it will keep you filled 5. Patty melt- a trim down version of the double cheeseburger, but still good. Very greasy though 6. The hot dog combo 3 hot dog and 2 fries- is way too much for one person. This one does not come with a drink though. All beef frank so you can't go wron 7. Chop steak- taste like a burger but greasier. Somehow this is cheaper than the double cheeseburger but I think I like that better
google avatar

Patrick B.

Yelp
A surprising good little hole in the wall. Very busy and it's rare to get good Greek shishkabobs. It was delicious better than I can make! They make it fresh so give them 15 minutes. Fries were good and hot. Parking is tight and there are only a handful of tables, but worth the inconvenience. It was busy at 2pm on a Thursday, that's s good sign. I will be back to try some more items.

Yelp
An excellent choice if you are looking for a budget, but decent meal...I was new to this place and was trying to get a quick meal. My friend suggested the place and I wasn't disappointed. Sandwiches and gyros were very tasty... forgot get some snaps.. but will for sure next time. Not a sit down option.. but excellent choice for a take out
google avatar

Willie C.

Yelp
I'm usually a big fan of this place. But I went there last night and had a hair in my chop steak. There good people here so I will talk to them next time I go back. I understand things happen.
google avatar

Tony D.

Yelp
This place is the best gyros on the west side of the city. It is a local mom and pop shop that has been around since the 80s. The food is cooked fresh to order and the quality is with the price. They also have an amazing Greek chicken salad. It comes with a pita and is quite filling.

Raymond P.

Yelp
I'm not a fast food fan per se, but this place has the ABSOLUTELY BEST Greek chicken salad you can carry out. Generous portions of grilled chicken with olives, feta cheese and peppers. I get the house dressing. You will be more than satisfied by the serving size and proud of yourself for eating healthy. Just a little over $9.00. It's worth it for the very fresh ingredients.
google avatar

Mw D.

Yelp
I am a vegan person and this place is the worse for vegetarian people .... not even any single option for a vegetarian people ... only greasy & fried food. By the way price are not for Poor guys! I ask for vegetarian burrito and they charge me same as beef one. Terrible experience and disgusting food!
google avatar

Jadira J.

Yelp
My boyfriend loves the buffalo chicken strips and I like their burgers. I like them better than Portillo's because they aren't as greasy as Portillo's. They give you a good amount of fries.
google avatar

Eric G.

Yelp
Place is small on the inside. I ordered a grilled chicken on pita at the advice of the cashier. A huge portion of fries, I think an entire chicken breast, and a lot of just everything (I think I paid extra for toppings). The chicken was unexpectedly *really* good. Overall, the price was ok. It was a decent wait but chicken does take time to cook properly, so the folks that ordered gyros were in and out before I got my meal. It was much better than I expected it would be and I'm going to go back.
google avatar

Robby W.

Yelp
For the type of food this place serves up (greasy fast food), this place is pretty legit. I had a client visitation in the area and the guys decided upon Poor Boy. I nearly always let the client pick where they would like to go. Aside from just being courteous, it also allows me to check out localized favs and also forces me to check out places Yelp reviews might have steered me clear of. Sometimes it works out, other times it's a disaster. In this case, it worked out well. The menu at this place is pretty massive for a fast food joint. They leave no stone unturned; burgers, dogs, Italian beef, subs, chicken, salads, burritos, and much more is all on tap here. I went with the Philly Cheese Steak combo that was on special for just over 6 bucks and included fries and a drink. For that low of price point, my expectations were pretty low, but it was surprisingly delicious. Many places that serve phillys have the meat so saturated in au jus that the bread is a soggy mess before you even take your first bite. That was not the case here. The meat was just the slightest bit too salty, but the fresh melted cheese and onions made up for this. I scarfed it down in short order. The fires here were of the skinny and extra crispy variety, so if your a fan of potato wedges or steak fries they may not be to your liking. As for me, these are my fries of choice! The dining room here is huge, with ample seating abound, and even right at 12:30 when the place was really busy, the exceedingly friendly staff had our food kicked out to us in no time. It was also very clean, which is a critical variable that I always factor into my reviews of busy fast food joints. Both of my companions went with dogs and fries and ate them down hungrily, though I am still not sure I understand the whole fascination with hot dogs in this town. A huge scene did take place while we were eating lunch which was memorable, and testimony to the patience of the staff. I was about 3/4 of the way finished with my sandwich when I heard some yelling coming from the order counter. Convos from the rest of the diners got quiet really quick and everyone directed their attention up front. There was a probably 350 pound black woman at the counter, In neon orange stretch pants, screaming about something. What was she yelling about? I can't really be certain as it was (I think) English but largely unintelligible aside from profanity. I could see the look on the poor clerk's eyes who was directly in front of her and make out a non-verbal "Oh-No" from his facial expression. This verbal melee went on for a solid min and a half, which had to be excruciating to the staff. Some people really do not have any common decency when in public. Fortunately, what I assume was a manager emerged and very cooly and calmly informed her that she could either leave or the police would be called. Kudos for this one, as I am not so sure I would of been able to keep such a level head in a similar situation. Overall, this is a great option for fast food if you are in the area. They offer fast service, great tasting food, and the prices are dirt cheap. My clients informed me that they stop in about once a week and the food and service is always consistently good. I am sure I will be back here at some point on another visit.

Yelp
We decided to stop here after a Brookfield Zoo trip, figuring the food would be better and cheaper than the junk they serve at the zoo, and we were right! Yum! Now it is mostly fried stuff, but it was really good. Our kids loved their food--they got the usual chicken/hot dog and fries combo. We both ordered gyro plates, and the gyro was super good--the meat was nice and moist, there was plenty of it, and plenty of fixins to go along with it. I would definitely stop here again. I'd rather spend $25-30 to feed my family here than $50 at the zoo.

Yelp
Went to this place wanting something different and got it ..The special was 3 hotdogs and fries plus a drink for $6.25 -I was expecting alot less than what I got ! I would put their hotdogs up against some of the pricier places so this place is definitely well worth it . It is the last place to eat at before going to Brookfield Zoo save some money eat here before you go . I also got a toasted sandwich that was really good ! A must try
