The Absolute Best San Francisco Coffee Shops

"It’s been written about and discussed, but the jury’s in: Poorboy Coffee is more than a passing fling. When owners Alexis Howard and Brandon Sardi launched, some shrugged, considering the cold brew pop-up that got real on social media might be just that. Now, the Rampant Wines banner-bearer has its beans roasted by 2025 U.S. Roasting Championship silver medalist Joel Lohner and Sardi’s become a whizz on the espresso machine, too. Believe the hype." - Paolo Bicchieri

"Taking over the bar in the former Queens and Open Book Project space on Ninth Avenue, Poorboy Coffee is a pop‑up cold brew bar that shares the business online and serves subtle, powerful coffee mocktails like Arnold Palmers made with Saint Frank Coffee beans." - Paolo Bicchieri

This Radically Transparent Cold Brew Pop-Up Gets Down to the Nitty-Gritty with Its Numbers | Eater SF

"Born from conversations about starting a wine bar and a deliberate decision to bootstrap, this coffee pop-up focuses on cold brew made with a bartending flair and has built a loyal Instagram and TikTok following as Brandon Sardi—who serves as the face of the business—breaks down line-item costs, weekly cup sales, and revenue on camera (usually filmed by partner Alexis Howard). After going viral during an installation at North Beach’s Bodega, the operation is moving into the former Queens location at 1235 9th Avenue and will open on April 5, serving cold brew, matcha, and pastries from Rosalind Bakery every day from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.; pourovers and rotating items are planned later and the team will have coffee roasted by Saint Frank Coffee. Emphasizing the unglamorized side of entrepreneurship, the founders started with minimal equipment (noting a $100 five-gallon brewer as an example), reinvest all profits, and publicly share the gritty financial details of building the business." - Paolo Bicchieri

Stopped by for the first time today! I really enjoyed the North Beach cold brew. The vibes were great and chill. Apparently they just opened a few weeks ago and may only be in this location through May. I’d definitely recommend stopping by and supporting this business.

cute small cafe I like their cold brew but their matcha had an interesting syrup in it that wasnt mentioned on their menu, did not taste like a simple syrup cold brew (The Goat) 4.5/5 matcha 2.5/5 unfortunately

Came to support the coffee shop, stayed for the delicious coffee. Not usually a fan of cold brew, but the brown sugar cold brew was divine. Can’t wait till the espresso machine is up and running!

Came here right before closing on a Saturday, Fyi, parking isn’t for beginners plan ahead. Folks running the counter looked busy but focused yet still recommended a solid trio of beves. The Strawberry Matcha JFC! The Goat, amazing and the North Beach, delish. Matcha and Cold brew drinkers will immediately know this is good stuff, nice balance of flavors. This stretch of 9th Ave offers a lot, come support!

Lovely local coffee shop. I ordered the North Beach coffee with cold foam and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I've watched the owner experiment and refine the menu over a few months down to some really creative and tasty specialty drinks. Place is a cute, tiny hole in the wall but I haven't had trouble finding somewhere to sit and hang out, and great chill music is a plus.

I'm a long-time, home brewing coffee geek, who, when out, loves to find coffee bars run by wonderful people serving up their work because of their passion for it. Today—especially in the USA—it's become harder and harder to find. That's a basis of a whole topic unto itself. Poorboy Coffee is a exceptional jewel who stands in rarefied air. They focus their passion for bringing quality goods into the cup for the customer's enjoyment, while serving it up with genuine warmth. I ordered an espresso—and randomly a strawberry milk because it was just something I wasn't expecting to see on a coffee menu. The espresso brewed from Saint Frank coffee (not sure which) I had was superlative. The shot was extremely sweet through the cup, but balanced with a good acidity that was far from sour. The mouthfeel was viscous and syrupy. The cup finished long, sweet, with caramel and light honey. It was the perfect classic espresso with a nudge into modern. Seriously. I can't remember the last time I had a shot so well pulled in this style—either from my home bar or anywhere else. The space is really enjoyable with an accessible counter at the front and tables and seating in the back leading to sunlit garden window. Poorboy Coffee's story is an interesting read on IG. They're bootstrapping this coffee business themselves (vs taking investment dollars). Gotta give them lots of kudos for that! If you've read this far, just do yourself a favor and pay them a visit for exceptional coffee drinks. Oh—their strawberry milk was nostalgic joy in a cup—real strawberries! …and give them a follow on IG!
